Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Sleeping Beauty" (1959 Disney animated film)

In contemporary American popular culture, this lavish animated feature defines the story of Sleeping Beauty. Countless children have grown up with this version of the tale, not just through the film itself, but through dolls, picture books, Halloween costumes, t-shirts, accessories, and visits to the pop culture icon that is Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Yet as an adaptation of of the fairy tale, it plays particularly fast and loose with the original plot. But the liberties it takes work to its advantage. Disney infuses the tale with emotion, conflict, and action that more strictly faithful adaptations lack, but which suit the art form of cinema.

The film's first and foremost departure from the classic tale is to flesh out and humanize the fairies, rather than portraying them as just ethereal agents of fate. The three good fairies, Flora (voice of Verna Felton), Fauna (Barbara Jo Allen), and Merryweather (Barbara Luddy), are small elderly ladies, each with her own distinct, endearing personality. In sharp, powerful contrast to their goodness and warmth stands Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) – not the mere angry fairy of tradition, but a majestic dark sorceress, the self-proclaimed "mistress of all evil," and one of Disney's most iconic villains. Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are the true protagonists of this film, as the story is rewritten to revolve around their efforts to save Princess Aurora (voiced by the golden-toned operatic soprano Mary Costa) from Maleficent's evil magic.

After Merryweather softens Maleficent's curse on Aurora from death to sleep, the three good fairies take further steps to try to prevent the curse from coming to pass at all. In another drastic departure from the traditional tale, King Stefan and his queen entrust their baby daughter to the fairies, who disguise themselves as peasant women and raise her as their foster child in the forest, changing her name to "Briar Rose." (Thus her name from the Grimms' version of the tale and her name from Tchaikovsky's ballet both get their due.) They plan to take her back to the castle at sunset on her sixteenth birthday, when the curse will end, to reunite with her parents and to marry her betrothed, Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley).

Sixteen years later, in the forest, Briar Rose and Prince Phillip meet by chance and fall in love, neither knowing the other's identity. Afterwards, Briar Rose is distraught to learn her own royal identity and betrothal, because it means leaving her "peasant boy" behind. When the fairies take her back to the castle, they allow the sad princess a few moments alone. Unfortunately, Maleficent seizes the chance to hypnotize Aurora and leads her up to a tower where a spinning wheel waits.

As the fairies put the whole royal court to sleep along with Aurora, they learn that the young man she met in the forest was, in fact, Prince Phillip. But Maleficent captures and imprisons the prince to prevent him from waking Aurora with true love's kiss. This leads to what may be the most dramatic change from the traditional story: Aurora and the court's enchanted sleep doesn't last for a hundred years, but just one night, the length of time it takes for the fairies to help Prince Phillip escape from Maleficent's dungeon and reach King Stefan's castle. After Phillip chops through the forest of thorns Maleficent creates to bar his way, Maleficent transforms herself into a fire-breathing dragon, and an epic battle takes place. In the end, of course, the dragon is slain, and Phillip's kiss wakes Aurora, who finally meets her parents and takes her place as princess by her prince's side, while the good fairies happily look on.

Walt Disney set out to make Sleeping Beauty his greatest animated feature thus far, and its visual spectacle and elegance have rarely been equalled before or since. With artist Eyvind Earl as the animation's chief stylist, the entire picture has the look of a rich medieval tapestry, combined with with sleek traces of 1950s modern art too, and the film's widescreen Super Technirama 70 format gives it an epic dimension far different from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Cinderella. The visual beauty is enhanced by the classical-flavored musical score by George Bruns, based on motifs from Tchaikovsky's ballet – of the few songs sung by the characters, the standout is the main love theme, "Once Upon a Dream," based on Tchaikovsky's famous Garland Waltz. Some critics might find the whole atmosphere too sophisticated and serious compared to other, livelier films in Disney's animated canon. But the excellent voice cast brings their roles to life, and the film's focus on Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather adds warmth, lightness, and gentle humor to balance out the medieval elegance.

While I can't say if Walt Disney succeeded or not in making Sleeping Beauty greater than all his earlier animated features, it's most definitely one of the crown jewels of the Disney animated canon. And while it's not the most faithful retelling of the classic fairy tale, its sheer artistic quality as a film is hard for any other version to equal.

Rendog is indeed a silver fox BUT with dilf-like tendencies so you were somewhat close yet missed the mark.

He's on the older side, which is tied to the dilf label, yet the greyed hair and general placement of said grey hair is where I feel more inclined to push him into silver fox territory.

Silver foxes are typically older men with grey to white hair and considered witty/intelligent alongside the iconic grey. Rendog has shown to be such with how he interacts with his friends and colleagues. He's very much up there in terms of building skills but downplays it in a humble way. We saw this when he talked about False's builds in comparison to his own.

I'm not that familiar with dilfs of the wine variety, but I can see similarities to wine moms/aunts who are both laid back and attractive. Rendog can be, and very much be both, yet I feel as if silver fox suits him more.

Been watching The Fall of the House of Usher, and I have uh... mixed feelings. I think it's because this is the first horror media I've ever actually watched. But um, they did manage to hit on basically all of my (not many) fears over the course of like, 2 episodes.

Spoilers for episodes 1-4 under the cut. TW for discussion of murder, animal death, and general horror themes?? Also, please no spoilers for episodes 5 and beyond!!

Getting mauled by a chimp (yes, I'm afraid of chimps. No, I'm not afraid of literally any other animal. It's been a thing for YEARS now.)

Not a Major Plot Thing, but also just... injections and needles.

On the other hand, I'm living for the Poe references. Like, Madeline using The Cask of Amontillado in her little "pep talk" to Roderick. The fact that there's an in-universe reason it's called Rue Morgue. (Plus the fact that the murderer was an ape remains unchanged...) The raven... I'm excited to see what becomes of Goldbug and (hopefully) The Tell-Tale Heart. (I know Goldbug is a thing, obviously, since that's mentioned from the first episode, but idk for sure about Tell-Tale Heart. I just assume that it must be because it's one of his most iconic stories.)

Also... Verna (if that's really her name) is killing me. I'm fascinated by her. It took me until the end of the 3rd episode to realize that she was also the Red Mask, and I wouldn't have figured it out if not for the fact that the characters starting piecing it together. (I'm awful with faces, I'm sorry. I think Juno(?) looks too similar to Verna's og appearance in the bar.) (As a side note, I'm also awful with names, and I usually have only just barely learned a character's name when they die, lmao.) At first I thought she had some kind of personal grudge against Roderick and Madeline, but then she told Camille that it was "nothing personal" which would be a lie, even if her beef was with Roderick. So idk. Maybe she's just some kind of "punisher of the wicked". (In which case it wouldn't be personal, it would just be paying a price / doing a job.) Since you know, she met Roderick and Madeline the night they clearly did something Not Great. (Potentially killed/framed Gris?) But also maybe Roderick and Madeline just stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time. When they first met her, Verna said the bar was a midnight place, if only for the night. And Roderick and Madeline remarked that the bar seemed oddly uncrowded. (Not to mention that it was nonexistent when Madeline went back in present times.) So maybe they just stumbled into a trap laid for anyone, or maybe it was a trap specifically laid for them. I guess I'll find out!

I don't really like horror media, and I don't see myself watching more after this. (The only reason I decided to watch this show was because I enjoyed reading Poe's works in school, and I was intrigued to see how it would all fit together into a show set in modern times.)

But I am very intrigued to see where this all ends up. And to see how Roderick got from passed out on the sidewalk with blood pouring out of his nose to in his ruined childhood home with Something down in the basement... (I don't think it's actually Madeline, at least not normal, not dead or otherwise fucked up Madeline...)

Cinderella (1950)

Sumptuously animated, with iconic images and memorable songs, Cinderella exemplifies the golden age of Disney Animation. Adults will be filled with warm nostalgia while watching - even if they didn’t grow up with the film. Kids will be delighted. Smart choices throughout make it an old-fashioned picture with lasting appeal

Orphaned and now living with her cruel stepmother (voiced by Eleanor Audley) and two wicked stepsisters (voiced by Helene Stanley and Rhoda Williams), Cinderella (voiced by Ilene Woods) is now a servant in her own home. Though forced to perform endless chores and suffer unjust punishments, Cinderella never loses hope that someday her dreams will come true. When the King (voiced by Luis van Rooten) organizes a royal ball to find a suitable wife for his son, Lady Tremaine becomes determined to prevent Cinderella from attending.

Cinderella is very much a classic fairy tale. The story is timeless and easy to latch onto. It’s also very much a product of its time. The protagonist is not an active participant in their own story. Today, a strong female character might use her wits to get herself out of a jam or just punch the bad guy in the face. It’s no spoiler to tell you that Cinderella’s salvation is kind of just served to her on a platter through the magic of her fairy godmother (voiced by Verna Felton)… but that's oversimplifying it. The story’s message is that even if others treat you like dirt, you shouldn’t hold a grudge and remain kind. The moral is taken to an extreme but it’s a good lesson to teach - far more applicable to real life than you'd think.

This is a rather straightforward retelling of the fairytale by Charles Perrault but key additions and choices make it stand out. First, the animated medium. Every frame of Cinderella is so crisp it looks like it was made yesterday. The colours are wonderful. The characters are delightfully expressive. The movements are smooth, everyone is always on-model and it’s a delight to simply watch the story play out. The chateau is filled with all sorts of details that make it feel like it used to be majestic but is slowly rotting away, like the huge mouse population that moves through its corridors through endless - and varied - secret passages. You can tell the artists had a blast coming up with new ways for Jaq, Gus (voice by Jimmy MacDonald) and the other mice to make their way from one room to another.

Another memorable aspect of Cinderella is the musical numbers. Ask anyone. They’ll tell you Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo is the best piece but over the years So This is Love has grown on me as much as A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes. Special attention should also be given to Oh Sing Sweet Nightengale, in which Cinderella sings harmony with herself in a clever manner that also utilizes the animated medium to its full potential.

Cinderella is a lovely person. She’s meek but kind and patient, with neverending empathy for those around her. Seeing her constantly beaten down breaks your heart. While she could be described as a bit bland as far as heroines go, the same can’t be said about the film's chief villain, Lady Tremaine. Modeled after and voiced by the same woman who would later bring Maleficent to life, she steals every scene she’s in. You hate her but wouldn't dare look away for a moment.

There is one scene, in particular, that stood out to me during this viewing. It’s not a big memorable moment but it exemplifies the care that was put into the film. In it, Cinderella walks up a flight of stairs with a tea set on a tray. She's being followed by Lady Tremaine’s cat, Lucifer, who knows a mouse is hiding beneath one of the cups. The cat is about to get his prey when Cinderella’s shoe suddenly slips off. She turns around to put it back on, spinning the tray and making Lucifer grab the wrong cup in the process. His bewilderment makes us laugh and the scene also foreshadows the famous slipper that will be left behind later in the film.

Cinderella is what you picture when you hear the words “Classic Disney”. it’s gorgeous, contains plenty of laughs, and offers just enough heartbreaks to keep you in suspense until the happy ending you've been promised. The songs are memorable, as are the characters - even if sometimes they’re little more than archetypes. Not every movie should be like Cinderella but if you want to tell an old fairytale, do it like this. (On Blu-ray, March 12, 2021

The tensest surgery to date. We were on the edge of our seats. The patient wasn't the only one breathing easier by the end of the episode. And I was impressed that Bell is standing up to Quovadis, although I do hope they don't make him too nice and let him be an asshole every now and then.

Spike returns to Sunnydale and kidnaps Willow in hopes of creating a magic spell that will make Drusilla love him again.

I do not remember tits out Maleficent in the Magic Box from when I used to watch this!!! [x] Probably because I had a Spike phase at the time and was too busy quoting his lines. He has some iconic ones this ep tbf, particularly the scene that ends with "I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." Although now rewatching I'm realizing Buffy is extra witty too (and also tits out lol). Just excellent dialogue all round.

That last falling mirror scene with the green lighting was so damn beautifully shot. Wow. And while Tamerlane was unravelling I actually felt most sorry for Juno. She just wanted to be part of a family and instead she just got rekt by a mic stand.
