#verge young leif
Text
thinking abt jackie and wilson by hozier as a verge (young leif series) song. thinking abt them meeting leif and thinking abt
INTRO VERSE: so tired trying to see from behind the red in my eyes / no better version of me I could pretend to be tonight
^verge living every day jumping and surviving to get to tomorrow, slowly ground down to feel tired of life, with the red in their eyes from the dryness of the desert they meet leif in.
soul deep in the swill w the most familiar of swine/for reasons wretched and divine
^verge being born into a life of crime for the most cruel of crimes and that rejection and hate from other ppl permeating their soul
^^“for reasons wretched” vapus being destroyed by the hubris of their plans “and divine” the incredible power that could have been achieved
she blows outta nowhere roman candle of the wild / laughing her way through my feeble disguise
^leif literally showing up on a broken ship like a firecracker in their life to spark something new / he sees through verge as a terrifying person and breaks their guard down so easily
no other version I would rather be tonight / and lord! she found me just in time
^feeling more and more relaxed with leif, beginning to feel happy in the moment they found leif when they did
cause with my mid youth crisis all said and done / I need to be youthfully felt, cause god I’ve never felt young.
^verge makes the choice to kiss leif in realizing they need to feel something they’d never been able to before
CHORUS
she’s gonna save me call me baby run her hands through my hair.
^leif being one of the only ppl verge could ever let close to run his hands in their hair (and not pull it).
she’ll know me crazy soothe me daily / better yet she wouldn’t care.
^leif being the one person who knows them so intimately, calms them in all their crises, and most importantly doesn’t care what kinds of sins other ppl put on their shoulders. he just loves them.
we’ll steal a lexus be detectives ride round picking up clues
^being on the nancy sinatra and living their fantasy life of being criminals with a purpose in their small family together
we’ll name our children jackie and wilson / raise em on rhythm and blues
^the ultimate fantasy of being able to settle down for verge. even if they don’t want kids it’s the yearning for a life they wish they could have. something about being Able to settle down that’s so appealing yet so far. / ^^another piece of that fantasy, that they’re gonna raise their kids on a steady rhythm, something calm and soulful and significantly Normal in their own way.
VERSE
lord! it’d be great to find a place we could escape sometime / me and my isis growing black irises in the sunshine
^verge starting to consciously wonder about some kind of normalcy to their life. / "me and my isis" is usually referred to as the goddess of healing and love, so the healing and love of verge through leif and “black irises” could be funeral flowers and maybe them knowing the fantasy’s doomed from the start.
every version of me dead and buried in the yard outside / we’d sit back and watch the world go by / happy to lie back, watch it burn and rust / we tried the world good god it wasn’t for us
^for a moment this was their life. to say fuck the world that hurt them badly and let it burn as long as they had an escape with leif.
CHORUS
she’s gonna save me call me baby run her hands through my hair / she’ll know me crazy soothe me daily / better yet she wouldn’t care / we’ll steal her lexus be detectives / ride round picking up clues / we’ll name our children jackie and wilson / raise em on rhythm and blue
^repeated again like they're reliving their life with leif and then.
VERSE
cut clean from the dream last night let my mind reset / looking up from a cigarette and she’s already left
^waking up the next day after their escape from minsky and lafftrax without leif (who left them voluntarily).
I start digging up the yard for what’s left of me in our little vignette / for whatever poor soul is coming next
^falling back into their old life knowing they can’t stay the same person they were with leif in order to survive.
END CHORUS
she’s gonna save me call me baby run her hands through my hair / she’ll know me crazy soothe me daily / better yet she wouldn’t care / we’ll steal her lexus be detectives / ride round picking up clues / we’ll name our children jackie and wilson / raise em on rhythm and blues
^the lingering memories of a life they could have had but could never have actually had it.

Honestly Verge was done so dirty by not showing up in the main plot, and this show doesn't do anyone dirty. I'm mentally preparing for the absolute gut punch in s4 of Leif finding out they died while he was off with løftrax.

rotating trans leif trans bert bert and canonically trans nonbinary verge in my head.
rotating leif being a trans woman and constantly fending off the pressure of being born a man and feeling constantly out of place in her own world, so she takes a ticket out to the stars.
rotating trans man leif struggling under being born a woman in male dominated spaces and fearing being stuck remembered as a woman for his work as well, and taking that same trip on up to finally leave everything behind and figure himself out.
rotating bert bert having to prove himself as a trans man and most likely have the added pressure of his mother either being supportive or strained that bert bert again doesn’t fulfill her expectations (and subconsciously putting another terrifying label on her back. gender varies but I imagine if it’s like earth enough there’s still bigotry and transphobia in certain cultures.) and adds fuel to the fight between them.
rotating also bert bert feeling more left out if his mom’s tangle is still the same one and feeling like he isn’t a good enough child.
rotating trans woman bert bert and the fact leif commented on her muscles as large and maybe feeling some dysphoria there.
rotating also the reunion of two trans ppl finding each other with no clue about the other’s past, only their identities, and the relief from dysphoria leif and berts could have felt knowing gender presentation doesn’t matter to each other. the universal feeling of knowing relief when you’re with your kind.
rotating vapians maybe still having a gender binary, although loose and in between, and verge finding themself through all that they’ve been through. rotating how they carry their identity with them and sometimes still hear an echo they’re betraying their culture by being themself over adhering to their ex-culture.
rotating them not hearing those echoes when they’re around leif when they see him/her being so unabashedly Leif, exuding that wonderful personality that’s so vibrant and s/he doesn’t even know it.
rotating verge carrying that feeling from that part of their time together even when their heart is broken and they know they need to forget leif to survive.
rotating verge realizing how to be unabashedly Verge, the monarch of cunning and crime, and maybe taking the experience to realize all they want is peace.
and rotating the hopeful idea they some day get it. <3

Midnight Burger & Young Leif characters as WTNV intros…
Caspar: Regret nothing, until it is too late. Then regret everything. (10)
Leif: I fought the law and the law won. I ignored the law and the law won. I abided by the law and the law won. (80)
Gloria: A lonely heart. A wandering eye. An empty stomach. A shoulder to cry on. This is what makes us us. (32)
Ava: The optimist says the glass is half full. The pessimist says the glass is half empty. It is only the truth seeker who wonders: why is the glass there? Why is there water all over the floor? Why is it covering every other surface of the house? Who, or what, is doing this to us? (18)
Effie: Our God is an awesome god, much better than that ridiculous god that Desert Bluffs has. (31)
Zebulon: Close your eyes. Let my words wash over you. You are safe now. (5)
Shel: Act natural. Act like all of nature. Act like the entire cycle of life and death and change and rebirth. (46)
Ex: The secret to a long life lies in how acutely you perceive time. (54)
Ted: Numbers don’t lie. But humans using numbers lie all the time. (87)
Läfftrax: Now is your chance. Well, that was it. It’s over. Did you do it? Have you achieved what you wanted? No? Ah well. (52)
Clementine: Those who remember history are also doomed to repeat it. (98)
Terric: We make money the old fashioned way. We chemically convert lead into gold. (103)
Tamara: But don’t you see? You never needed anything else. The weird was within you the whole time. (69)
Frank: Cook a feast no family could fully eat. Recite prayers no family could fully believe. And acknowledge a frightful history no family could fully comprehend. (78)
June: The arctic is lit by the midnight sun. The surface of the moon is lit by the face of the Earth. Our little town is lit too, by lights just above we cannot explain. (3)
Chuck: In just a few days the whole story will be known. This is what happens after. (76)
Verge: It takes heart. It takes guts. It also takes cash. It just needs your payment immediately. (30)
Bertiluna: What’s past is prologue. What’s future is epilogue. This right here is maybe chapter 4 or 5. (73)
Dez: Which came first? The chicken, the egg, or airplanes? (92)
Alice: To err is human. But to err is also computer. We’ll have to find another test to reveal which of us are secretly bots. (81)

Okay, trying to get my rough ideas for the Team Snakereverse AU onto the screen (and also test out my editing capabilities)- the original concept for the AU was just to reverse the initial positions of Vi, Kabbu, and Leif from canon, but then it snowballed immensely from there. Here’s our lovable protagonists, with descriptions of what they’re up to under the cut:
Sick of her job as an underpaid, overworked contractor scavenging from the Fallen Hive, Vi was exiled from the Bee Kingdom on the termite overseers’ orders after she tried to organize a strike. She’d barely arrived in Defiant Root when Astotheles’ Metal Island Mercenaries struck the settlement, during which Vi distinguished herself by helping fight off the mercenaries armed with nothing but a pair of hastily-repaired bayonets trashed by termite soldiers (which she refers to as her “Beeyonets”). Disillusioned by the mercenaries’ modus operandi and disgusted with the local termite garrison’s reluctance to properly defend Defiant Root during the raid, Vi took off in search of somewhere she could meet with like-minded bugs and help put an end to the Termite Kingdom’s imperialism and negligence, both in the Bee Kingdom and across the rest of Bugaria. At first, she thought she’d found a place like that in the Ant Kingdom’s Underground Haven, but quickly learned that the bugs there were more interested in debating minuscule details of theory rather than taking any kind of action and got herself kicked out for complaining about this too much. Upon finding the Explorers’ Association, she realized a job there would give her a perfect cover for traveling across Bugaria searching for other prospective revolutionaries... and, hey, if she’s being honest, the idea of getting to track down ancient treasures and making sure they end up in the hands of bugs who actually deserve them (such as herself) sounds pretty good too!
Already badly injured, Kabbu was left semi-conscious after being thrown into an ancient crystal early on in the battle with the Beast, resulting in Bit and his master dragging him into a hiding place and telling him to wait for an opening to flee, which he did only to watch both of them die as they tried to bait the Beast into following them away from where they’d left him. Realizing too late that being slammed into the crystal had given him control of earth magic, a furious Kabbu buried the Beast alive, tearing up vast tracts of the surrounding swamplands before coming to his senses. Fleeing in shame and fear, Kabbu blamed himself for his friends’ deaths, believing that if he hadn’t been there they would’ve been able to escape from the Beast and survived, and resolved that he would never explore or use his new powers ever again. Kabbu took a desk job at the Explorers’ Association upon arriving in the Ant Kingdom in an attempt to punish himself and continued holding himself to his vow to not explore. Unfortunately, seeing a bright, driven young bee on the verge of being rejected as an explorer weakened Kabbu’s resolve, and before he knew it he was volunteering to team up with Vi temporarily so she could get an Association permit. Kabbu privately promised himself that he’d quit and return to his old job the moment Vi found someone else who’d be willing to join her exploration team, but now that he’s getting attached to both of his new friends (especially considering how much more he’s been starting to feel like his old self after adventuring with Vi and Leif), he may end up asking for his temporary placement on Vi’s team to be made permanent.
Discovered by Vi and Kabbu in the upper levels of the sunken Rubber Stronghold, this blue-and-yellow moth is a unique case in that they’re actually two beings sharing one body. The first is Leif, a moth who died in the Stronghold after a flood cut him off from his team during a scouting mission, and the second is the cordyceps that crawled into his body and inadvertently got his brain working again, which Vi dubbed Corder upon learning that connecting to Leif’s brain had allowed the cordyceps to develop a mind of its own. Leif is not exactly happy with the circumstances of his resurrection (which Corder has been very apologetic about), but both recognize that they can’t currently survive without the other, so they’ve worked out a deal where they copilot Leif’s body until they figure out a more permanent solution. Due to Leif’s lack of combat abilities, Corder’s been trying to fill in there by letting out one of its sharper-edged tendrils and making it look like a whip, though for the sake of keeping up their cover it has to control one of Leif’s hands to hold the “whip” when other bugs are around. Yes, they do get a lot of questions about whether a whip is really a practical weapon- one thing Corder and Leif can agree on is to make a running gag out of responding with different, increasingly ridiculous answers every time.

Listened to the last episode of Young Leif this morning and it devastated me that I waited until night to listen to it again. (At the time I wrote this, It was written when it was released, I was too lazy to finish it)
I wanted to hug Verge so bad. 😭 I loved how they poetically conveyed their deep love for Leif and the emotional burden it imposes is utterly heart-wrenching. They are quite literally and figurately star-crossed lovers. IDK Verge, The monster seems like it already took over and destroyed you. I hope they meet again one day. ;n ;
I love the friendly interaction between Verge and Bertbert, especially in coming up with a new alias.
Verge's resilience is truly admirable for going through all that self-consciousness imposed by other alien lifeforms and persists in existing to spite them and not let their race not be forgotten. It reminds me of people with Indigenous ancestry in the Caribbean islands who refuse to accept the paper genocide confirming their extinction. should I still be considered Taino?
Oh Cool! more Teds characters. I love this voice actor's voice, it's pleasing. They are an interesting bunch and you sometimes want to punch them. IDK Why, but sometimes they remind me of the Irkens from Invader Zim. Aliens who go around conquering planets and using their resources. I like them.
Pfft, The teds are so rigged that algorithms decide what they should think for them for a particular day. What a dick for taking Leif out just to take a dig at him. That particular Ted seems to be fully utilizing their daily allowance of pettiness, using it to its maximum effect.
Alice not seeing themselves as sentient and just okay shutting down, possibly forever, is sad. They may not have a mutually beneficial relationship like humans and Dogs, but it's still a relationship. Even if it is an artificial one to keep yourself from feeling lonely. Speaking with yourself isn't as weird as ppl think. Everyone does it all the time. My computer can't talk to be like Alice but I still name it and attribute human qualities to it when it misbehaves. When it slows down, I jokingly say it's "aging" into an old man. This computer's name where I wrote this post is Oliver and the second scene's name is Mercedes (the spanish name, not car). My phone's name is... 'My name is jeff' Really, it's not just Jeff, it's "My name is jeff", that's the whole name. Jump 22 reference, now you have that clip meme in your head. I wish I was better at writing my thoughts.

18+ | james/keith canon compliant | multichaptered | on ao3
They’re driving back to the Garrison base during sunset when Leifsdottir, excellent wingwoman that she is, leans toward Griffin and mutters, “The red paladin has been fooling you all week.”
Half tuned-out, Griffin raises his head from his seat and looks over at her. His helmet is cradled in his lap, and he’s enjoying the cool breeze blowing through his hair after a grueling 12-hour mission. However, as soon as the words red paladin came out from her mouth, Griffin’s brain lit up with activity. “What?”
“The Garrison equipment. He can use it just fine.”
,..There’s a hint of amusement in Lefisdottir’s eyes, despite how sweaty and exhausted they all are. It’s been three months since the Galra have been defeated on earth, and the threat of invading spaceships has dwindled to nothing. The Garrison brass has finally relented and are now allowing the MFEs and Paladins to go on ground clean-up missions. It’s a nice change of pace despite how long these kinds of missions could take.
Ordinarily, Griffin’s team knew not to bring up Keith Kogane outside of their usual booth in the back of the Garrison Bar. However, this time Griffin is grateful for the insight, and he allows his thoughts to drift.
The paladins are slightly unfamiliar with the Garrison’s weaponry, or at least Griffin had assumed as such. Being off-planet for so long would do that to you. Keith was getting especially frustrated with the trigger of his laser; James had taken out an incoming drone before crowding close to Keith behind some rubble. “Leifsdottir, McClain, cover us!” Griffin yelled, before yanking the gun from Keith’s hands. “What are you doing?”
Keith made that adorably frustrated face, and Griffin is endeared, even as they’re being shot at. “The trigger keeps sticking.”
“It doesn’t stick—you’re just firing wrong. Watch, and do what I do.”
To his surprise, Keith had kept quiet the entire time Griffin showed him the proper way to hold the gun for an easier shot. When he passed it back, Keith followed his instructions to the letter, and ends up taking out three sentinels with only two blasts.
“’Atta boy.” Griffin said absently, flashing a grin as he pulled his own gun from its holster. He thought he heard Keith make a soft, breathless sort of noise; but before he can check on him, Rizavi is pulling up in the ATV, and the four of them pile in hastily.
…That was… what, 8 hours ago? Griffin had nearly forgotten. The memory comes back, along with similar ones from earlier this week… of Keith getting frustrated about one thing or another and Griffin moving in close and helpfully correcting him.
Honestly? Griffin had thought he was the one taking advantage, using these opportunities to scent at Keith’s hair or brush up against his waist, wondering if Keith was gonna make a move like he did the first time… Huh.
At any rate, this is extremely useful information. Griffin knows that Leifsdottir wouldn’t have said anything if she weren’t at least 98% sure. “Thanks, Leif.”
“Welcome.” She goes back to staring curiously at the ongoing terrain.
Griffin sighs, tipping his head back against the headrest. If Keith just wanted a hook up, why not just corner him after a mission and kiss him? It had worked well enough when they were cadets. Is Keith shy? Griffin scoffs at the thought. What is it then? Does he get off on pretending to be incompetent? Griffin’s eyebrows furrow as he immediately starts to analyze the information he’s been given. No… he’s more than capable when he’s with Commander Iverson and the others. Is it just around me? Does he like to act helpless around m—oh.
 OH.
Griffin thinks he has it figured out, at least partially. A dirty sort of warmth spreads from his chest downwards. He had played around with this sort of thing, before; mostly with locals back home who were extremely impressed by his status in the Garrison. He shifts around in his seat, thinking about nights like that, of leisurely ordering his partner to strip, to crawl or bend or position themselves to his liking, to service him until his control is at his limit…
…Is Keith into that sort of thing, too? Does he like being ordered around? Does he like it when Griffin orders him around? Fuck. Griffin thinks, already half hard in his uniform. His imagination is on the verge of going wild with thoughts of the dark-haired boy in the ATV just up ahead.
That is, until they hit a rocky patch of road, startling Griffin from his thoughts. Rizavi shoots and apology over her shoulder. She’ll never know that he’s grateful for the interruption; Griffin didn’t know how he’d explain a boner after a mission as arduous as that one.
Griffin has calmed down considerably by the time they return to the Garrison. He exits the vehicle and nods at his teammates before hustling back to his quarters. He takes a long, steaming shower, then moves through a couple dozen stretches before exiting his room with just enough time to catch the end of dinner.
Half an hour later, he is just leaving the dining facility when he bumps into the subject of his attraction. Having clearly opted for a nap upon their return from the mission, Keith looks sleepy and ruffled in a way that does not help redirect Griffin’s thoughts from earlier.
“Oh- sorry.” Keith says on the backend of a yawn, and Griffin stares, because even a half-awake apology is enough to get his heart racing.
You know what?  He thinks. Fuck it.
Curfew is in less than 10 minutes, but for once Griffin doesn’t care. Without thinking, he snatches Keith’s wrist and swiftly drags him around the corner, away from the other soldiers hanging around the dining hall entryway.
“Griffin?” Keith is well on his way to full consciousness, if his attitude is anything to go by. “Dude, what’re you doing, I wanted some fruit before they—"
“Kogane.” Griffin gently crowds Keith against the wall, releasing his grip around Keith’s wrist. Something in Griffin’s voice makes Keith actually listen, for once. The paladin crosses his arms, fixing his former rival with a look of soft irritation.
“Yes?”
A smirk pulls at Griffin’s lips. “I learned something about you, today.”
“Like what?” Keith’s eyes narrow in catlike suspicion. Griffin is struck, again, by how goddamn cute he is.
“Think I’ll keep it to myself, for now.” Leif wouldn’t have said anything if she wasn’t 98% sure. Griffin reminds himself, summoning up the stones to test his theory.
Keith rolls his eyes and makes to move off of the wall. “You dragged me over here just to be annoying? God, you’re such a—”
“Stop talking.” Griffin murmurs, bracing his forearm against the wall next to Keith’s head and leaning in close.
He almost bursts in his pants when Keith obeys without a single additional word. No snide comments, no bold defiance, nothing. Instead his pretty violet eyes widen, and his mouth slowly closes as the faintest blush appears on his cheeks.
 Shit.
Griffin realizes two things at once: 1) That Leifsdottir was right, and 2) that he hadn’t thought this far ahead. Hadn’t expected how good it would feel to see his former rival/hookup go so casually compliant on Griffin’s order. This is nothing like the sloppy, awkward makeouts they shared as young cadets; they’re both grown now. And even though he hadn’t expected Keith to be quite so… easy, Griffin was never one to back down.
Still, he allows himself a bit of indulgence, as long as Keith’s giving. Griffin noses along the tempting line of Keith’s neck, then upwards to nuzzle at the curve of his ear. He hasn’t been this close in years, and Keith smells really good.
“You want my advice?” Griffin’s breath ghosts across the curve of Keith’s jawline. “On how to shoot your shot?”
He feels rather than sees Keith’s nod.
“If you want something from me…” Slowly, Griffin pulls back to look at the paladin. Keith should know how deadly serious he is. “…you need to ask me for it. Understand?”
Eyes shiny with anticipation, Keith licks his lips and says, “Yes, sir.”
Griffin’s blood sings at the unexpected title. It takes everything he has not to kiss the man in front of him, not to ravage Keith’s mouth until he’s squirming against Griffin, needing him in a way that Griffin used to fantasize about. He’s a soldier, and one of the best; but it’s been a long time since his self-control has been tested like this.
In the end, he manages to pull away, though just barely. Keith, while still starry-eyed, has the nerve to look a bit smug. It only makes Griffin hotter, for some reason. If that’s Keith’s game, he’ll gladly play it.
“It’s good to have you back, Kogane.” Griffin murmurs. He gives Keith one last, lingering look before sticking his hands in his pockets and turning back towards the dorms.
He’s just about to turn the corner when he pauses, glancing back at Keith with a smug expression of his own. “Oh, and… the kitchen’s already closed.”
 “Motherfu—”
Griffin hums all the way back to his dorm.

obsessed with thinking abt young leif and bertbert and the song problems by mother mother.
straight off the intro it’s “you and me we’re not the same/I am a sinner you are a saint” <- mostly from the perspective of leif, it just encapsulates the entire series imo. he meets bertbert. they’re the same. they’re not the same. he’s a sinner. he saved his planet (in the back of his mind he betrayed it - committing the ultimate sin in the eyes of humanity/himself; it doesn’t matter. he defines himself by it constantly.) she’s a saint. she comes from a planet that is literally a utopia. she’s trying to find purpose in the world and align the world to her good moral values and meets someone who’s as smart as her and understands her on a level she can’t find anywhere else (her primary friend for years; she’d never admit it). she hates him and loves him and they both know they have a part of themselves in each other.
“I’ve found love in the strangest place…I say I’m gonna stage a great escape” <- finds bertbert and verge; leif always escapes/leaves/says he’s going to leave but does he really(?)
“let loose a love all pent up and painfully out of place” <- leif esp in ep 8 with his father. always painfully out of place and nowhere to put his love for the world or his family that shunned who he was.
“doo doo doo, I’m a loser, a disgrace/You’re a beauty, a luminary, in my face” <- playful aspect of the song. I think leif plays that part of their dynamic off as a joke but knows it’s painfully true with bert bert. he is who he is but he might still internalize it. or at least from an audience perspective, there’s an idolization of what berts does and how much he admires her and her work esp from how she’s described as a character. she’s constantly working towards a beacon of truth and justice. she’s a beauty. she’s a luminary. she’s literally always in his face. he’s a loser, a disgrace.
“I’ve got a lot, not a lot, I gotta lot less than a lot/I’ve got problems” they both have problems. they both try to play off that they don’t. they both have a lot of problems.
ending it w the first verse but also saying the whole vibe of the song is very Them. chaotic alt rock and fun melodies harmonizing. also features loud yelling with sweet almost nostalgic melodies.
