Backgammon - Golden Birds

Backgammon belongs to one of the oldest board game families in the world, the dice table games, and has its origins in human history over 5000 years ago.

Despite the almost overflowing abundance of new, complex, exciting and elaborate game developments, such timeless classics continue to enjoy unbroken popularity. Like chess, Go or Reversi, backgammon is played and enjoyed by many hundreds of thousands of people around the world in their leisure time or in competition.

Although the game is mainly played with dice, it is not a game of chance. The simple but ingenious basic rules create a tactical and mentally challenging brain game from the group of two-person zero-sum games with perfect information.

The aim of the game is to roll your own pieces out of your home field. You have to make clever moves to prevent your opponent from capturing individual pieces and thus gaining a lead in terms of turns and time. This is because captured pieces must first be rolled back into play before you can make a regular move.

Over the course of time, hundreds of variants have developed, each with their own local characteristics. Additional rules, modified starting positions and different victory conditions also invite young people in all countries of the world to enjoy the fascination of backgammon.

All variants, no matter what they are called and which country they come from, have the game board with the characteristic triangular squares in common, even if other shapes exist.

I created an elaborately decorated version for the VBR, which was inspired by an exhibit in the Dresden Residenzschloss (permanent exhibition of the armory: "World view and knowledge around 1600").

I call my creation "Backgammon - Golden Birds" and it is intended to be reminiscent of the arts and crafts of the 16th to 18th centuries, even if I am not aiming for a historical reference to a specific era.

She has clearly declined since leaving wob - with that being said i still think she has a higher level in her, but it is not like she left wob and Barca gave her a much better training environment. Oh! I shared this info with the Sunder City discord but forgot to put it here.

In some interview somewhere, Luke Arnold mentioned that he used to read the Philip Marlowe noir detective novels, and that they informed his love of the genre and his inspiration for the Sunder City novels.

Then someone else, somewhere, mentioned that in 2014 Toby Stephens was cast as Philip Marlowe in a BBC radio adaptation of eight of the novels.

I set out to find those recordings and they were available through archive.org!

They are *beautifully* produced, full cast radio dramas. I listened to the first one the other day and was entranced. Here are the links, both the main page and the zip download, for anyone else who is interested:

Do you know where a good place is to find Bear in the Big Blue house merch? My 1 yo is obsessed with the show and I'd like to try and get the album or some of the seasons if possible. He also loves to fall asleep to Go to bed, Sleepyhead and I can't find a good version of it

Hi! Mercari has become my go-to for merch actually! eBay is also pretty reliable (it’s best for DVDs/VHS tapes), but I’ve had better luck on Mercari recently + their interface is friendlier imo

The CDs tend to get REALLY expensive, but here’s one at a reasonable(ish) price

Here’s a bear plush, a big bear plush (missing his nose color, but that’s normal for these guys), a BitBBH plate/bowl, a puzzle, a toy piano, and a couple books

Also, here is a link to the Internet Archive upload of Go to Bed, Sleepy Head! to download it, click “VBR MP3” under “DOWNLOAD OPTIONS” — this should take you to a black browser page with a plain MP3 player. Right click on the player, then click “Save Audio As…”

That should allow you to save the audio on your desktop ^_^ (on Mac at least, I’m assuming the steps are similar on Windows)

spending the week teasing her about which of her teammates shirts you’d wear this week, one day claiming to be MLT’s biggest fan, the next day VBR’s, but in the end, you’d always be proudly sporting number 23.

getting very loud and overexcited during the games, and any time lessi scored (or even touched the ball) proudly (and loudly) yelling to everyone in your vicinity that ‘that’s my motherfucking girlfriend!’

(imagine after one game you make your way to the barrier, do your best impression of a fan as lessi comes round to sign things, fanning yourself and shouting ‘no.23 im your biggest fan - sign my tits!’ and getting weird looks from everyone else around you, until less looks up at you and just laughs and smacks your arm)

lessi insisting that she can hear you amongst the crowd, and you laughing it off, but then making sure to shout extra loud whenever she’s near you on the pitch, just in case.

lessi feeling such a sense of pride that even though you were a fan of the team first, that you loved football anyway, that no matter how many other players you joked were your favourite, she was always your number one. her loving how passionately you cared for the sport and the team, but secretly revelling in the fact that, once the match was said and done, she was the one you came home with.
