once when i was just barely a teenager i was putting my grandfathers very expensive acoustic back on its wall hanger
his studio room was pretty small and had very low ceilings with a fan, and i was so so focused on not bumping the guitar on furniture so i lifted the guitar up to clear a table and heard a massive bang from above and instinctively yanked it back down to assess the damage while trying to come up with ways to explain to my grandpa that i broke his $2000+ guitar.
fortunately, there was a spring capo on the headstock, which is what hit the fan, with no damage to the headstock; regardless, i have never felt more fear while handling an instrument, and since then i have been extremely conscious of paying attention to all variables while moving guitars.

At no time did I find that I was not in control of the bike. The Monster 821 played its role very well in allowing me to experience the road in a very exhilarating and fun way. It is a powerful motorcycle; however, it is very smooth and predictable as one would expect from a twin cylinder engine. The relatively flat torque curve and the 109 horsepower combined with the weight of this motorcycle gives it a finely tuned feeling that Ducati is known for. I would recommend the Monster 821 to everyone. Speaking via video link, Shima Seiki president, Mr. Mitsuhiro Shima, who was unable to attend ITMA Asia due to travel restrictions, said he found it meaningful that a textile machine show should be held in the midst of such turmoil and confusion for the fashion industry. "Now is the change for textile machinery manufacturers to offer time solutions for the troubles the industry faces," he said, adding that the company's solutions were centered around WHOLEGARMENT technology which continues to revolutionize the industry after more than 25 years, as well as DX solutions ranging from Virtual Sampling to factory automation and sustainability. "With limited travel and teleworking, the need to rethink business methods is also evident," he said. "We offer a variety of solutions for supporting those as well. Solutions such as our new subscription service for design software as well as our new web service for exploring yarns from around the world."

At the show, Shima Seiki is demonstrating just how much the technology has evolved and improved. 
By renewing various functions of the machine SWG-XR boasts significant increases in productivity. At the same time, Shima Seiki has added various new functions that allow the production of designs that could not be knitted previously.
Samples demonstrating this have been shown live but also virtually and include one piece dresses in both long sleeve and short sleeve can be knit in significantly less time - up to 25 per cent for the long sleeve and 32 per cent for the short sleeve.
This is performed with double knitting, which is made possible through the use of four systems on the new SWG XR machine.
Intarsia knitting, which had been considered unsuitable for WHOLEGARMENT due to long knitting times is also now made practical with this machine with the use of auto yarn carriers leading to a knitting time reduction of 65 per cent.
"We will continue to research possibilities for using even more colours in the future," Shima Seiki said.
The advancements in the technology are also illustrated by three further samples, which, says the company, were impossible to produce using available WHOLEGARMENT technology.
The one-piece dress below can be knit with an asymmetrical silhouette without any loss of productivity through the use of variable stitch density.

At the show Shima Seiki is also focusing on its latest developments aimed at improving knitting mill automation through Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation (DX).
Mills can begin by creating a production plan using Shima Seiki's knit production management system with which you can visually confirm job information and production plans for each machine.
Next, knitting data is sent automatically to the knitting machine according to the production plan. This saves time on operators otherwise programming each machine.
During production, yarn cone holders that feature censors for remaining yarn allow smooth replenishment of yarn whilst reducing down time.
Shima Seiki also proposes various solution in factory automation in cooperation with partner companies. The hanger system, for example, allows efficient factory management by using it for mobilizing yarn as well as for complete garments. "We also support factory automation with semi automatic steam setting and folding, bagging and sealing. All of these production processes can be monitored in real time from your PC or smart device.
"By making factory operations visually transparent, smooth communication can be realized for increased productivity."

Functions and Applications of Spring Hanger

In order to satisfy the design criteria of power and process piping in industrial plants, spring hangers and supports are used. They are actually simple assemblies but engineers still have to understand why they are required in piping. Hence, we are going to discuss the functions and applications of a spring hanger to help you better understand its purpose.
 Functions of a spring hanger
 Spring hangers are most often considered as a special type of pipe support with spring in its assembly. What makes it different from other types of support is its spring rate or its lower stiffness. With this property, the spring hanger is capable of accommodating the displacement of the pipes while still providing the needed reaction force to support the piping. To achieve the right design of a spring hanger, especially its load and travel capacity, computational piping stress analysis is necessary. According to the pipe displacement principle, a spring hanger is capable of providing more stable and flexible support forces to piping when the springs are extended or compressed.
 In terms of types, spring hangers are categorized based on load types - constant and variable. Constant spring hangers are designed with lever assembly which reduces the load variation of up to 6% maximum. Conversely, variable hangers are smaller and are more economical than constant spring hangers with the same capacity. With their flexibility, a spring hanger is used in many applications. These include the following:
 In-line shell and tube heat exchangers or re-boilers
Lines that are connected to fired heaters and other high temperature air-cooled heat exchangers
Lines that are connected to storage tanks often under high differential settlement
Lines in power expanders and gas compressors
Lines in coke drums, reactors, and LNG separators
 Ultimately, whenever the design that requires high support from spring hangers is ignored, it can lead to serious problems such as piping failure because of inappropriate load distribution. Other issues like leakage, pipe stress, and excessive vibration are also evident. This is why spring hangers play a vital role as piping support.

Basic Pipe Stress Concepts and Piping Loading Categories;
Piping systems experience different loadings, categorized into three basic loading types, namely Sustained, Thermal and Occasional loads. Sustained Load: It mainly consists of internal pressure and dead-weight. Dead-weight is from weight of pipes, fittings, components such as valves, operating fluid, test fluid, insulation, cladding, lining etc. Internal design/operating pressure develops uniform circumferential stresses in the pipe wall, based on which pipe wall thickness is determined during the process/P&ID stage of plant design such that "failure by rupture" is avoided. In addition, internal pressure develops axial stresses in the pipe wall. These axial pressure stresses vary only with pressure, pipe diameter and wall thickness, all three of which are pre-set at the P&ID stage and hence these axial pressure stresses cannot be reduced by changing the piping layout or the support scheme. On the other hand, dead-weight causes the pipe to bend (generally downward) between supports and nozzles, producing axial stresses in the pipe wall (also called "bending stresses"); these bending stresses linearly vary across the pipe cross-section, being tensile at either the top or bottom surface and compressive at the other surface. If the piping system is not supported in the vertical direction (i.e., in the gravity direction) excepting at equipment nozzles, bending of the pipe due to dead-weight may develop excessive stresses in the pipe and impose large loads on equipment nozzles, thereby increasing the susceptibility to "failure by collapse". Various international piping codes impose limits, also called "allowable stresses for sustained loads", on these axial stresses generated by dead-weight and pressure in order to avoid "failure by collapse". For the calculated axial stresses to be below such allowable stresses for sustained loads, it may be necessary to support the piping system vertically. Typical vertical supports to carry dead-weight are:
Resting steel supports,
Rod hangers,
Variable spring hangers, and
Constant support hangers.
Both rod hangers and resting steel supports fully restrain downward pipe movement but permit pipe to lift up at such supports. If pipe lifts up at any of the rod hangers / resting supports during operating condition, then that support does not carry any pipe weight and hence will not serve its purpose. Two examples are presented to illustrate how piping can be supported by spring hangers and resting steel supports to comply with the code requirements for sustained loads. Thermal Load (also referred as Expansion Load): It refers to the "cyclic" thermal expansion/contraction of piping as the system goes from one thermal state to another thermal state (for example, from "shut-down" to "normal operations" and then back to "shut-down"). If the piping system is not restrained in the thermal growth/contraction directions (for example, in the axial direction of a straight pipe), then for such cyclic thermal load, the pipe expands/contracts freely; in this case, no internal forces, moments and resulting stresses and strains are generated in the piping. On the other hand, if the pipe is "restrained" in the directions it wants to thermally deform (such as at equipment nozzles and pipe supports), such constraint on free thermal deformation generates cyclic thermal stresses and strains throughout the system as the system goes from one thermal state to another. When such calculated thermal stress ranges exceed the "allowable thermal stress range" specified by various international piping codes, then the system is susceptible to "failure by fatigue". So, in order to avoid "fatigue failure" due to cyclic thermal loads, the piping system should be made flexible (and not stiff). This is normally accomplished as follows:
Introduce bends/elbows in the layout, as bends/ elbows "ovalize" when bent by end-moments, which increases piping flexibility.
Introduce as much "offsets" as possible between equipment nozzles (which are normally modeled as anchors in pipe stress analysis). For example, if two equipment nozzles (which are to be connected by a pipeline) are in line, then the straight pipe connecting these nozzles is "very stiff". On the other hand, if the two equipment are located with an "offset", then their nozzles will have to be connected by an "L-shaped" pipeline which includes a bend/elbow; such "L-shaped" pipeline is much more flexible than the straight pipeline mentioned above.
Introduce expansion loops (with each loop consisting of four bends/elbows) to absorb thermal growth/contraction.
Lastly, introduce expansion joints such as bellows, slip joints etc., if warranted. In addition to generating thermal stress ranges in the piping system, cyclic thermal loads impose loads on static and rotating equipment nozzles. By following one or more of the steps from (a) to (d) above and steps (e) and (f) listed below, such nozzle loads can be reduced.
Introduce "axial restraints" (which restrain pipe in its axial direction) at appropriate locations such that thermal growth/contraction is directed away from equipment nozzles, especially critical ones.
Introduce "intermediate anchors" (which restrain pipe movement in the three translational and three rotational directions) at appropriate locations such that thermal deformation is absorbed by regions (such as expansion loops) away from equipment nozzles.
A few example layouts are presented to illustrate how loops/offsets, axial restraints and intermediate anchors are used to reduce thermal stresses in piping (and resulting nozzle loads). Occasional Load: This type of load is imposed on piping by occasional events such as earthquake, wind etc. To protect piping from wind (which normally blows in horizontal plane), it is normal practice to attach "lateral supports" to piping systems. During an earthquake, the earth may also move vertically. To protect piping against both horizontal and vertical movement during earthquake, some of the resting supports may be made as "integral 2-way vertical and lateral restraints". Fortunately, to carry sustained loads, normally vertical supports (as those listed under the Section titled "Sustained Load" above) are required. To withstand static seismic 'g' loads, "integral 2-way vertical and lateral restraints" are required. Generally, some of the vertical weight supports can be modified as "integral 2-way vertical and lateral restraints". On the other hand, for thermal loads, zero supports give zero stresses. So, thermal stresses and equipment nozzle loads will normally decrease as the number of supports goes down. Axial restraints and intermediate anchors are recommended only to direct thermal growth away from equipment nozzles.
