The Emperor does not have a beard, because seeing what a scanty beard the Marquis has grown over the decades, he realized that it would not suit him.
He literally speaks of the Marquis's beard as: "Is he chewing it in his sleep, otherwise why hasn't it grown a millimeter in so many years?"
Yes, shitty humor is hereditary in the Regulus family. That Callisto, that the emperor - they joke so that no one but them understands what they are about.

VADD stuff, in which I attempt to fix a few faults in the writings of the novel
Hello VADD fans of tumblr, welcome to this little series of mine where I attempt to fix a few wrongs within our favorite novel and manhwa of all, Villains Are Destined To Die.
This is Part 1 of idk-how-long-this-serie-will-last-but-most-likely-until-I-grew-bored
In this post, I will attempt to fix why Callisto, our favourite unhinged crown prince, is attracted to Penelope in the first place.
Because let's be honest, the real reason why that was stated (interestingness and "not like other noble girls" or sumshiet) in the novel is pretty...a big no
Note: This isn't to say the story was bad or anything. In fact I love it! But there's definitely a few things I'd like either removed or fixed and I'm sure plenty of you can agree
This is lazily done in one sitting so keep that in mind. And also the things I wrote in this post will lead up to season two of the manhwa
NOW ON WITH THE SHOOOWW!
Imma throw this outta the way to make this clear. Callisto was not captivated by Siyeon!Penny's looks, only when she "confessed her love" to him.
Hearing them made Callisto dumbfounded, enough to pull him out of his stupor and lift his mood a bit because for whatever reason hearing someone profess their "love" to him with his blade on their neck is hilarious (weird humor but okay)
He eventually pulled his blade out, pretending to buy her lies and asked why she fell for him. Of course no excuses worked at the time.
Callisto could just let Penelope be after that, saying he knew she was lying to save her life but won't kill her. However, she is the daughter of the Eckhart Duchy, with the Duke as head of the neutral faction. Having the Eclhart on his side essentially meant all the other houses in the neutral faction would side with him as well, giving him the support needed to secure his ascension to the throne as Emperor. Thus, Callisto gave Penelope some time to think about why she "fell in love" with him in the first place. A pretext that serves as an excuse for him to see Penelope again and reel in the Neutral faction to support him.
Fast forward to the hunting competition, Callisto met Penelope again. Callisto asked if Penelope had figured it out yet and you guys know what happened next.
Callisto was in quite a predicament then. How will he be supposed to gain more support to secure his ascension?
And then giant giant cutesy danger birbs. Then Penny being a BAMF. Then the culprits were revealed, Penelope asked for the children to be left under Winter's care and you know the drill by now.
Then we moved onto the actual hunting of the competition. Callisto showed up and teased Penelope about the pendant, with a goal in mind to try to be in her good grace somehow, despite the clear line she drew between them both. And also he does NOT know how to casually befriend someone.
But actually?
He found her company somewhat...okay?
He didn't know what to think of the "Mad Dog" of the rumors at the time, since he approached her with ulterior motives. But the company is much more tolerable compared to any other noblewomen, so he can appreciate that.
Then the cave scene.
When Callisto led them to safety in a random cave, he looked after Penelope until she woke up. During that time, he noticed just how...small...she was...
Figuratively and literally.
She was far too thin and frail, yet she managed to survive and shoot down the giant cutesy birds from the night before, the bear AND the assassins all on her own just fine.
It was admirable, really. But seeing the princess of Eckhart unconscious and vulnerable like this, it made him feel odd somehow.
Familiar in a way.
And looking back at the events today, he realized.
Ah.
She reminded Callisto of himself when he was a child.
Small and vulnerable.
It felt foreign somehow, he didn't know what to think of these new thoughts of his. He decided to fetch some firewood inside the cave.
The Lady woke up. They had a bit of bantering before she went to sleep.
Callisto stayed awake a little longer and mulled over his thoughts of the princess.
Her company was enjoyable. The moments between them, however brief, were by far the most peaceful moments of his life since his mother's passing.
Still he tried to remind himself that he approached Penelope to fulfill his goal, not because of something as measly as friendship.
Penelope woke up again, shivering and quaking uncontrollably. Seeing her in such a state...reminded him more and more of his younger self.
Without thinking twice, the Crown Prince reached out to her and tried to offer her comfort, or whatever he could offer at the time.
And perhaps, as a way to help him heal somewhat, mused about his past to the Eckhart Princess.
Her reactions were a bit...well unexpected, but there seemed to be this look of understanding in her eyes somehow? Though he might be seeing things due to the poison slowly spreading in him.
Soon it was time for them to sleep, and somehow he thought he might be able to have one restful night for once.
Y'know what?
Perhaps once Callisto secured his ascension, it wouldn't be too bad to maintain this bond with the princess and be a little more honest.
Yes that alone should be fine

{Mild rant moment}
I need to get this out of my system, after a talk I had with some mutuals of mine (happy to say we all agree on this), and it contains novel spoilers, I warned you. No this post does not contain humor or jokes like my usual posts, it is just me giving a take on what exactly is going on in the Vadd fandom because some people seem to be reading a completely different novel/manhwa than most, like @seirclys mentioned, and I couldn’t agree more.
I often see people defending Ecklies, (or whatever the hell you wanna call him), saying ‘but he’s innocent/ poor baby🥺👉🏻👈🏻’ sis- this man is anything but innocent/innocuous/oblivious , this man is SMART.
I’m not saying this as a compliment, he is smart because you see how well he hides his real intentions and twisted nature, from when he literally betrayed his fellow people; brought Yvonne (aka Leila) back to the duchy after everything Penelope did for him, effectively backstabbing her, because he wanted to make her solely depend on him, (obsessive nature).
He tried to kidnap Penelope when she turned down his offer to ‘run away together’ and decided to ‘follow Leila’ (kinda?) so he could have Penelope by his side
Still like @seirclys mentioned in a similar post to this, do you really think that Leila would’ve let Penelope live when she is the only one that can actively stop her schemes and defeat her? Not a chance, keep dreaming.
Also- another thing I see, that makes me want to violently bang my head against the nearest solid surface for the sheer stupidity of it, is ‘he has wasted potential/the author did him dirty/ the author made a mistake-bad choice when they made Callisto the male lead’
1. What wasted potential are we exactly talking about?? Where? Please enlighten me.
•Every story plot is thought through before being published or written. Every character has their role, and in his case, Ecklies was designed to be the ‘twisted/ dark/ obsessive character’ (kinda like an antagonist) from the very start. Otherwise we would’ve seen a very different outcome, don’t you think?
2. Stop saying that the author did a mistake or a bad choice! That’s disrespectful.
•The author has put in much work in the novel, and then someone random comes and takes a shit on that. Literally one of the most disrespectful things I’ve seen people comment. The author made that choice, respect it. You don’t like it? Don’t comment and move on, or write your own original story- Wattpad and Ao3 are free, who knows maybe a lot of people will like your story.
3. Callisto was created to be the male lead. Every character fills their purpose and role.
•I know I jest around a lot when it comes to Callisto, but jokes aside, he really did do some fucked-up shit and his ways weren’t really ‘it’ the first time he interacted with Penelope, but we see him have a growth (humanly speaking), and we learn why he did what he did, can’t say that I approve of some of his ways, but he actually had a motive. He also has something called character development, what some like to ignore completely.
Another good example of character development we see in the story is Reynold, who might not be the best, but he has a nice redemption and growth throughout the arc of the story. That is how you make a character redeemable. (Can’t say I forgive his actions, but at least he tried to make amends for the shit he has done).
What makes me really laugh is seeing ‘Ecklies is innocuous baby and Callisto is the bad guy’. Again- are we even reading the same story anymore?? Ma’am- Ecklies makes Callisto’s crazy moment look innocent. What are you talking about?? At least Callisto didn’t try to kidnap Penelope, nor did he backstab her. Need I remind you that Callisto was literally on the verge of death but he still put Penelope first and was willing to let her go because that’s what she wanted?? Now THIS is real love.
-And reminder that Ecklies followed/stalked Penelope around for three years (in the side stories) because he wanted to kill her:
Tumblr media
How can you really say that he’s the good guy after this??
And for the ones who keep on insisting that it was Penelope’s/ Syieon’s fault because ‘she used him’ you selectively decide to remember that. Ecklies also used and tried to manipulate her.
They used each other. With Syieon choosing to raise his favorability because he was the apparently ‘easiest target’ out of the five morons that are the male leads, to Ecklies that hated everything that Penelope/Siyeon was and wanted to make her rely on him only so his twisted tendencies could thrive. You see how toxic all this trash-fire is? Would you honestly like that?
I say that Penelope did a good choice when she rejected him, I would too. Ecklies scares me shitless and in her place, I would be terrified of him. He literally can kill her at anytime even without meaning to. He just needs to lash out ONCE, even unintentionally, and it’s game over for Penelope.
I know that people like it because it’s fiction, but there is something that attracts/appeals you for you to like it, and this brings me to the question- would you really like to have a relationship like that? Please stop romanticizing toxic/abusive relationships, be it fiction or not.
I also noticed that there are a ton of other different manhwas that have the male lead do similar things to Callisto, however people seem to fly over that completely. Why is that you may ask? I’ll tell you- it’s because Ecklies is good looking, and appeals aesthetically to the reader. His good looks can’t compensate for what he did.
DISCLAIMER: I don’t care what you ship, just stay out of my little bubble and keep your hate and spite to yourself. The real problem manifests when:
-people romanticize toxic/abusive/obsessive relationships and push it onto others, sometimes actively being rude to other people for the ships they like.
-go out of your way to make a good character look bad only to make your favorite pass as ‘baby/cute/innocent’ (who is considerably worse). And politely, stop looking for excuses to make a character look terrible just because you dislike them.
-take a shit on the author’s hard work; again, go write your own story if you don’t like it.
-spread misinformation and false spoilers that mislead others.
Yes, this is absolutely a *side-eye* to someone. Idc.
With this I conclude my rant for the moment- might update later.

(Chapter 30, Chapter 92)
SUOL-nim's art style progression is truly amazing(I tried to find similar panels to compare) and the SCAR CONSISTENCY??? praise the goddess artist of VADD
Also sidenote, legitimately one of the scariest-looking panels, did not fail to make me uncomfortable(especially with the pale eyes??? immaculate vibes). I'm glad SUOL-nim isn't shying away from the horror vibes of the novel.
If you look at the season 1 MLs compared with season 3, there are large changes. Noticeably, Derrick becoming more buff and masc-looking. But Eckles manages to keep looking like he's in the same age bracket as Penelope(aka the barely-adult almost cutesy young??) but also presents a different aura of danger.
I love the anger panels/similar panels to what we're getting in Chapter 92 because it reinforces the danger of Siyeon(and by extension, Penelope)'s situation, such as with the Derrick jail scene, and the Reynold attic scene(not counting the Callisto meeting scene because it became humorous with the confession).
'nother note: boy finally got gloves when training, the number of splinters from his wooden swords DOES NOT seem fun

Reading This Week 2024 #2
And so the spring semester begins!
Started and Finished:
"On Fairy Stories" by J.R.R. Tolkien
Interesting essay that Tolkien wrote about what he thought fantasy was and what he thought he was doing with his writing!
"Connectivity and Collectivity in Contemporary Global Fiction in English" by Madigan Haley
"Scalability" by Aarthe Vadde
"How to Write about Africa" by Binyavanga Wainaina
"The Global Program Era: Contemporary International Fiction in the American Creative Economy" by Kalyan Nadiminti
the above four are for my class on "the global novel" which I have not actually had a class session on, but have to have readings done for the first day! how to write about Africa is absolutely scathing
"Indigeneity" by Shannon Speed and "Colonialism" by Geeta Patel from Keywords for Gender and Sexuality Studies
read for a class on "native indigenous bodies," good primers for the use of those terms
"From Elfland to Poughkeepsie" by Ursula K. Le Guin
brilliant and humorous essay arguing for the importance of Style to the fantasy genre, which really convinced me of what makes fantasy feel like fantasy to me
"Introduction: Affirmative Actions of Power" from The Reorder of Things: The University and its Pedagogies of Minority Difference by Roderick A. Ferguson
"But Some of Us Are Broke: Race, Gender, and the Neoliberalization of the Academy" by Tami Navarro
Chapters 1-2 of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paolo Freire
above three read for my women's studies graduate seminar. Pedagogy of the Oppressed was such a breath of fresh air in its very readable style (it's not simple but it is very straightforward)
"From a Native Daughter" by Haunani-Kay Trask
also for the indigenous bodies class. an essay on Hawai'i's history
Started and Ongoing:
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
nearly finished with this and considered pushing to finish this tonight! absolutely delightful, I am desperate to read the rest of this fantasy series. oh btw technically this and the previous essays on the fantasy genre were read for a class on Fantasy that I'm TAing and you will be seeing a lot from that
Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli
reading for the global novel class. interested in seeing where the motif for the camera goes, but I don't have very strong feelings on this book yet
Ongoing:
He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan
only a couple chapters in, but I got a bit more in. already very interested in how sexuality and sexual desire are being manipulated/used as a tool for gain

Headcanon #70
Interesting fact... Siyeon's older brother has glasses.
Is it possible to say that Derrick does not see the reasons for Penelope's bad behavior, because...Does see badly?
