Under Night In Birth: Sys Celes (The Last Game I Will Set High Expectations For)
I need to get this off my chest because how French Bread rumored UNI2 as a "sequel" still bothers me to this day.
The reason why I bring this up and why I feel it's important to discuss is because a lot of people fall into this trap of setting high expectations for a game that causes your brain to run wild with imagination.
When UNI2 was rumored to be a sequel, I thought that this game was getting a complete makeover from the ground up. An anime opening, new sprites, English voice acting, a story mode that lets more characters interact with each other. I put too much faith in this game ever developing their characters further. So much so that I REALLY wanted Hyde and Gordeau to get SOMETHING. They don't even talk a single time throughout any of their games (Though Gord does talk to Linne and Seth...huh.)
Since I write in my free time. Sometimes I go into "What if" mode when I feel characters can be developed further or can have an interesting relationship if the creators ever decide to explore it. Since parents rarely exist in UNI2 (other than maybe one or two exceptions), I liked the idea of Hyde looking up to Gordeau like a father figure since they are very similar in personality. To be fair, I always had a love for the "spiritually adopted" plot when it came to any type of story (This is what I call it unless there is an official name for this plot out there.) Anime seems to use this plot more than most. Hell, I'm pretty sure One Piece is infamous for this, but other than the redemption arc or enemies to lovers plot, the spiritually adopted plot is one of my favorite stories if done well.
I think the only reason why I felt that relationship could work between Hyde and Gord was because of BBTAG. BBTAG's story mode is the only time they are allowed to talk to each other...EVER, and it's not even in their own game and that drives me BONKERS! Things like Gordeau calling Hyde kid before fighting Blake and Makoto only for Hyde to ask Gordeau if they can stay together... I hate reading into stuff like this because it ends up with me yelling at my TV screen "Expand on it, expand on it! God damn it you have a good idea here! AAAARRGH!"
I won't go too much more into my problems with UNI2, but one of my biggest grievances when it comes to writing in general is watching or playing as a character that either should have been the main character or had the potential to be expanded on so much more. Think Diamant from Engage or Jotaro from Stardust Crusaders (I haven't watched past that so if I'm wrong, please let me know.) Diamant, for example, gets so much strong writing and character development that I felt he should have been the main protagonist instead of Alear while Jotaro has the opposite effect where, as the main character, he gets very little development, but clearly has themes centered around his family and powers that could have been expanded upon, but aren't. Stuff like this drives me up a wall where I can see the potential to get a better story from a character than what we got...but it doesn't happen. That's why fanfics exist!...I just wish it was the real thing sometimes.
Anyway, sorry for my rambling here. I definitely don't expect a lot of people to read this all the way through, but it's here if you want to see it. Lesson about not setting high expectations for a game finally learned. I hope you guys have a lovely summer.

Seeing footage of the UNI2 beta and I'm thinking that French Bread really takes their palettes seriously. Every character has 40 palettes, plus 5 more that you can customize. It's great IMO, but it has me wondering if custom palettes could be implemented in a game with 3D graphics as well. Obviously it's trivial in a sprite-based game, just use indexed images to form the sprites and a palette to color the character, and then recoloring them is as simple as swapping out the palette.
There's a few more logistical issues with 3D graphics though: how do you handle mipmap generation? Do you compress the textures to take up less VRAM, or do you skip that to make generation faster? Would I pre-generate the textures and have clients send those, mipmaps and everything, over the network, or do I only send over the basic color and material data and have the client figure out what to do with those? Speaking of, how do I handle materials? Only allow changes to the albedo? Or do I unlock the metallic and roughness channels as well, allowing finer control but also increasing the amount of data sent between clients? What if I decide to take some sort of lightwarp based approach?
There's a lot more variables involved and tradeoffs to be had, but I think it could be done. And if someone did do it, and even did it well, I think that would be really cool to see.

I'm seriously about to dedicate my account to critiquing just the UNI2 art.
I told myself for a while now that Hyde Kido was one of the only UNI2 characters that had a new design that came out pretty clean... that WAS until I saw the full design for the first time.
Look at what they did to our boy! Those are not male, 16 year old legs. Those are legs of a WOMAN! Probably not even ones from a teenage girl. We're talking ripe, yearly twenty to late twenty female legs.
Listen, ok. I draw, or, I am practicing drawing to get better and I understand that I more then likely will never have the talent to create something as close to this...but I can at least point out when a part of a characters design is off...or bad...or both (I'm writing this as I am using Hyde for a refrence again for my drawing. Oh boy, may have to reconsider posting that later.)
If you ignore his womanly figure, the upper half of his design is fine! I'm so glad that's where the art cuts off if you choose him in UNI2 because other characters in the game are not so lucky.
For some reason, UNI2's artist has a serious problem with defining male and female body parts. Sometimes, a male character in UNI2 will look too womanly (cough, Tsurugi arcade art, cough), sometimes, a female character will have there womanly features fucked up with clothes that are waaaay to tight on them (Yuzu, Wagner, Hilda, just to name a few.)
(Sooo.. I don't know how many people have seen this post already, but I was informed that the same person who created UNI2's art ALSO created the original UNICLR art...oops. All I'll say in my defense is thinking that UNI2's art was created by a different artist felt like, to me, an honest mistake. The art just doesn't feel like it was created by the same person. Because of that, I'm going to try to be more careful stating stuff like this from now on.)
Ugh...oh well. What's done is done, I guess...
Edit: Also also, it doesn't help that Hydes pants look like TIGHTS. Look....characters need to breathe down there, you know what I'm saying? Even from his sprite work, Hydes pants aren't glued to his body. They were designed to have a little bit of wiggle room in them. Geez...
