American Politics TV Shows

What are you in the mood for? If you feel:

Silly, fun, want to see the inner workings of a city/state government; watch Parks and Recreation. One of my favorite shows ever and not only is it diverse and fun to watch, it also hits home some important issues. When I grow up I want to be Leslie. This is Chris Pratt’s big debut and towards the end of the run you see him start to transform into Peter Quill. My favorite episode is the one with the scout troops because that’s 100% me. In the form of a mockumentry and features some fun and surprising cameos, each half hour episode is packed with fun and memorable characters. On Netflix.

Scary, dark, wanting to see the world burn; watch House of Cards. This show isn’t afraid to show Washington’s dark underbelly and it follows Democrat Frank Underwood as he rises from Senate Party Whip to the President himself. Its dark color scheme and lack of fear showing sex and violence, it’s not afraid to twist and turn into some of the scariest shows I’ve seen. Frank breaks the 4th wall often to either explain to his audience what he’s doing or even make a snide remark or two. Kevin Spacey scares the heck out of me. Clare is my favorite character as Frank’s wife and a woman who also wants power. Just recently she has “discovered” us and has her own way of making sure we’re paying attention. I don’t really have a favorite episode, but I have a favorite moment. It’s from this past season where Frank is talking to us and then starts talking down to us. I was burrowing into my couch because I was freaked out. This past season everyone was dreading due to the fact that this was after the recent election and we had no idea how they could make this season scarier than real life. They managed to do it. On Netflix.

Calm, dramatic, like reading a book; watch The West Wing. I was a latecomer to this show, and I fell in love with it. It has a slow pace, but you get drawn into the characters and their lives. It’s a very cut and dry showing of the inner workings of the Federal Government and is like House of Cards serious older brother. The cast is fabulous, it hits real issues from the 90s and early 00s, and it’s a great piece of work. CJ is my favorite character as the Press Secretary with her dry humor and fun performance of The Jackal. My favorite episode is the one where they have an open house for projects and the hilarious proposals the staff has to sit through plus their reactions is priceless. This show had to tackle 9/11, which they did tastefully and set the standard for later political shows when dealing with a post 9/11 world. I’m not sure if it’s on Netflix still.

Drama, dirty politics, modern issues; watch Scandal. This show focuses on fixer Olivia Pope and her team as they fix all the personal and political problems of the most powerful people in the world. It often feels like soap opera with the never ending sexual tension, but Shonda Rhimes never pulls back punches when it comes to real-world issues such as women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, our current political madness (I was screaming at the TV once I saw it start to happen for them not to do it) plus a whole arsenal of Alice in Wonderland twists and turns that your head hurts thinking how they’re going to get out of this now. My favorite episode is the Christmas one where Mellie holds a filibusterer to get funding for Planed Parenthood. She kills it standing on her own while reading the ridiculous things the budget funds. I can’t stand Fitz (the President with a male ego problem), but I love Mellie (former First Lady, Senator, and the Rep nom for President) and Susan (current VP and former Senator). I’m pretty sure no one is supposed to like Sally (former VP), who is a complete Umbridge and makes me squirm every time she comes on. But if you don’t mind drama and insane plot lines and want a lighter version of the problems House of Cards has to deal with, it’s an interesting show to watch. On Netflix.

Humorous commentary dealing with our current political state; watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Both of these are live shows, meaning that they stay very up to date with what’s going on in the world. They also make comments on what they see going on in the world. Meant to keep the government on its toes and exercising the First Amendment to the edge, these shows unabashedly points out mistakes made and keeps people accountable. You know things are bad when you have to get your news from these two shows since they actually fact check. If you’re a conservative, don’t bother watching. Trevor has taken over for Stewart on The Daily Show, but he’s doing a pretty good job. Colbert is more nerdy and is a huge Lord of the Rings fan. I personally like Stewart better just because he’s brutally honest while making it dead hilarious, but the other two are just as good.

Granted, I haven’t seen everything like Veep or The Americans, but this should get you started.
