Indian Labor Unions Stand with Palestine
article headline: "No 'export of workers' to Israel, say trade unions in India"
Text of their statement (linked in above article):
Press Release issued on 9th November 2023
The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Federations/Associations oppose any move to EXPORT INDIAN WORKERS TO ISRAEL TO REPLACE PALESTINIAN WORKERS
Israel is shamelessly escalating its genocidal attack against Palestinians, rejecting appeals by the UNO or even their masters, the USA for a ceasefire!
The Modi government’s unethical and duplicitous stand on this issue too stands exposed : first the quick expression of solidarity with Israel, then studied backtracking by the Foreign Ministry, sending humanitarian aid to Palestine and finally abstaining from supporting the UN Resolution for a ceasefire!
But now even more shocking facts are coming out : in May, 2023 during the visit of the Israeli foreign minister Eli Cohen to New Delhi, both countries signed an agreement to send 42,000 Indian workers to Israel, out of which 34,000 were to be brought into the construction industry, to replace the Palestinian workers. Now, the Indian government is planning to export around 90,000 construction workers to Israel as demanded by them. The Indian Government is playing a despicable role of supporting the Israeli plans to throw out Palestinian workers. Retaliation of Hamas attack is only an excuse!
As it is, the settler-colonial occupation of Palestine has decimated its economy, causing high levels of poverty and unemployment, and has resulted in Palestinians being dependent on Israel for employment. Though numbers have fluctuated over time, an average of 1.3 lakh Palestinians were employed in Israel, with the construction sector accounting for the largest share of Palestinian workers, with Palestinian worker making almost 65-70% of the total workforce.
Nothing could be more immoral and disastrous for India than the said “export” of workers to Israel. That India is even considering “exporting” works shows the manner in which it has dehumanized and commodified Indian workers. Such step will amount to complicity on India's part with Israel's ongoing genocidal war against Palestinians and will naturally have adverse implications for Indian workers in the entire region.
India's trade union movement must rise in solidarity with Palestinian workers and reject this disastrous idea. Let's resolve that we will not work to replace Palestinian workers in Israel! India and Indian workers should boycott Israelian products! Indian workers, as their counterparts in some western countries, should refuse to handle the Israelian cargo!
We demand that the agreement with Israel to export Indian workers be scrapped immediately; we demand an immediate halt to Israeli aggression against Palestine; end its occupation; we demand that the Palestinian right to a sovereign homeland be upheld – this is the only possible route to peace.
Signatories:
CITU, INTUC, AIUTUC, AITUC, HMS, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC, And Independent sectoral Federations/Associations

Easy A (2010)
Tumblr media
High schoolers can be real shit-heads.  No duh.  They can be shitty to one another, to their parents and teachers, to themselves.  Movies can capture and channel that in powerful ways, whether to give vindication or catharsis—remembering those rough times with a shudder and a snicker, or helping those going through a time period that seems as if it will never end something with which to connect.  But we also have to remember that these are created stories, and the filmmakers to an extent bear a responsibility for what their work has to say.  Look at John Hughes’ oeuvre, revered by many as cornerstones of coming-of-age films, but still with their wrinkles, whether from an angle of racism or troubling depictions of sexuality and sexual behavior.  I returned to Easy A after many years, remember how much I’d enjoyed my introduction to Emma Stone and expecting to slip back into its familiar, warm embrace.  And yet now, I find that there’s a lot more to wrestle with here.  Easy A has a very strained relationship with a lot of the things that it wants to address, in brief:
—ENTITLED MASCULINITY: Entitled douchebags galore plague Olive with requests for her “services” which turn to demands and threats whenever she turns them down.  Sure, they aren’t portrayed as saints, but they’re more or less let off the hook for their reprehensible behavior.  Boys will be boys, right?
—FEMINISM: Olive embraces the ‘slut’ label as a sort of weird rebellion to double and double and double down on her lies, yet this isn’t about sex-positivity or something (regardless how many caveats the parents put down on it), but the inherent negative spectre of sex still lingers over her behavior or believed behavior.  Sex is still bad and no matter how badly the Christian Kids are portrayed, it still doesn’t do anything less for Olive.
—QUEERNESS: Oof.  The weird Huck Finn callback at the end… not so sure what the hell that was all about.  Speaking of the gay kid, The Tucc’s handling of homosexuality as a phase was peak fake progressiveness that those parents embodied.
Easy A makes use of a contemporaneous soundtrack much in the same way that others of its ilk do.  We get the mix of Indie and pop-rock tunes that make the late ‘00s unique.  Though I have to say I was disappointed that “Transatlanticism” was relegated to a barely-audible car stereo tune for a snippet of time.  Deserved more prominence.

Hi I would like to request part 1 of the stanley tucci x kat novella we talked about last night 🤣 okay okay i kid... unless? 👀
Fandom: Joz’s Imagination Pairing: Stanley Tucci x Kat Word Count: 818 Rating: G Taglist: Literally only @heroics-and-heartbreak wants this to exist a/n: You thought you were just making a joke. You should’ve known I’d do it after my boyfriend requested “train fic” and I made it happen somehow. E n j o y !
Tumblr media
She’d had a very, very long day.
Working as a therapist at a nonprofit was incredibly fulfilling and in many ways it was her dream job, but it was hard work. If she ever met the person who coined the phrase “if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life” she would punch them right in the face because at the end of the day, even if you love it, work is work. That was why she was so happy when she got a text from her boyfriend.
The Tucc: What are your plans for the evening? Therapissed: After how today went I was thinking about going home and just burrowing my face in Dashiell’s stomach The Tucc: Oh dear. Well, I’d hate to pull you away from your time with Dash, but I wonder if I could tempt you to come by my place tonight? I finally got that cheese I told you about Therapissed: Cheese you say? Therapissed: *eyes emoji* The Tucc: I’ll send an Uber to pick you up. See you soon xx
Within 20 minutes she was standing at his doorstep where she could already smell the red sauce he’d no doubt been simmering all day. She pulled out the key he’d given her at Christmas and let herself into his home.
“Knock knock,” she said as she entered, slipping her black flats off by the door and shrugging off the grey peacoat. Stanley appeared, a dishtowel thrown over his shoulder and a smile on his face.
“Just in time,” he announced, giving her a hug and pressing a soft peck on her cheek. His hand took hold of one of hers and escorted her into the little dining area which already had a sumptuous cheese plate prepared.
“Can I get you a glass of your usual vintage?” he asked as he walked back into the kitchen.
“Oh yes,” she replied with a smile, “And then you’ll have to walk me through a tour of this plate.”
He returned and handed her a wine glass filled with a sparkling water he kept around specifically for her. He’d added a sprig of mint and some cranberries that bristled with bubbles at the bottom.
“Now this is the one I was telling you about, the p’tit basque,” he said, pointing to a perfectly laid out series of small, white wedges, “Then of course we have some goat cheese, some brie that’s been toasted so it’s nice and melty – it pairs perfectly with the garlic rubbed French bread slices I have here – and I added an exceptional manchego I found at the market as well.”
Her mouth watered as he described them and by the time he’d finished she was already reaching for some of the newly acquired cheese. He watched her face as she took a bite and sighed at the delicious taste, doing the little happy dance she always did when she ate something tasty. When she opened her eyes she saw him watching her, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
“Acceptable?” he asked.
“You really do know the way to a girl’s heart,” she replied with a fond smile that he returned. He retreated into the kitchen to finish cooking and as she nibbled on the various cheese, she talked with him about her day. Well, as much as HIPPA would permit. Most of the problems had been to do with coworkers, though, and as he waited for the pasta to cook he crossed his arms and leaned against the doorway, watching her with an empathetic expression on his face as she spoke.
“Well it sounds like you’ve had one hell of a day,” he said when she had finished.
“I did,” she agreed, “But it’s much better now.”
He beamed, always happy when he could lighten her load even a bit, and went back to finish the dinner. She set the table as he put the finishing touches together, very familiar with his kitchen by this point in their relationship. She had a toothbrush in his bathroom and half a drawer. They were both slow and careful in the progression of their relationship but the unhurried pace was a testament to the comfort they felt with each other. There was no fear that they had to quickly lock each other down as some did when they were dating later in life, and there was no evasion of intimacy or fear of commitment. It was just a soft, slow entwining of their lives that would segue into something uniquely their own, whether that meant a ring or not wasn’t a concern at this point in time. At this moment she was just happy to have a warm meal she didn’t have to cook and a man who knew the best way to take care of her was to let her vent and then ply her with cheese and Italian food.

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Reach Out For Me
When i was young, i saw this ridiculously odd show which came on during the middle of the day, on a Sunday. I only caught the tail end but i remember there was this giant, melting, monster of a lady, getting her sh*t kick in by a bunch of mice. It was traumatizing as f*ck! A few years later, i started watching this movie called The Witches and, toward the climax, that scene from before, started playing. Obviously putting two and two together, i realized this movie was the same one that gave me whole ass nightmares for a week. I was impressed that this campy ass movie about child eating witches with a mean case of eczema, could solicit such an emotional response from me and it’s become one of my favorite movies. It also helps that the book is WAY more dark that the film even tries to be. Imagine my surprise when HBOmax decided to remake this whole as thing and the little mouse kid is f*cking Chris Rock. After a few weeks of debate, i have a very real concern this thing is going to taint my memories of the first, i’ve decided to check it out. Will this new Witches remake go the way of Bayformers and ruin something beloved from y childhood? Let’s see.
The Good
I have to say, i like to the look of this version more than the original. I love these versions of the costumes and the elaborate decor of the hotel, itself. Even the Witches, themselves, seem far more feral. They’re definitely more horrifying and i say that with complete understanding that the Huston’s version of the Grand High Witch was a slab of fetid, mollifying, flesh.
Anne Hathaway as The Grand High Witch was pretty dope. She had this smarmy, arrogant energy that carried the movie perfectly. I thought i’d be comparing her performance to that of Anjelica Huston but Hathaway definitely makes it her own, no comparison needed.
Octavia Spencer turns in another solid scene stealing, performance. This lady is f*cking phenomenal in everything she’s in, even elevating abject schlock like Mom to respectively serviceable heights. Of course, Spencer brings this same energy to her role as Grandma, one of the few aspects I would say is better than the original.
The Tucc! I love that Stanley Tucci is in this. He plays the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer. Mr. Bean played the part originally but, I mean, it's Stanley Tucci, man. This dude is like that extra spice to take your dish from just okay to bam!
Look, a Chris Rock voice over makes everything better. He’s like Morgan Freeman that way.
This is definitely a Robert Zemeckis film. It’s good seeing him back in the director chair, actually making physical film instead of uncanny valley, CG, atrocities, but he’s so far outside of his prime, it’s kind of sad. Again, he does a decent job with this material but i can’t help but think how much more interesting and energetic this film could have been during his prime. This thing didn’t need to be another Roger Rabbit or Forrest Gump but i’d have liked to see something with a little more flair that what we got.
I love this soundtrack, man. As a black kid who spent the weekends with his grandma as a youth, this sh*t hit home. I remember all of these songs and they bring back warm memories.
Race-bending the main characters in this version seems unnecessary but it's definitely appreciated. I kind of wish they would have gone a little further with it though. This thing is a period piece set in the Sixties but the fact that our protagonist is black never really plays into the narrative that much. Feel like it definitely should have.
The Bad
There is a stupid controversy going around claiming that the fact the Witches have three fingers on their hands is discriminatory toward people with the actual affliction that causes this in real time. Apparently, these people with Ectrodactyly are tired of three fingered villains in media? This sh*t is stupid and people need to chill the f*ck out, man. Look, i get it. People feel some kind of way about this type of sh*t but really? This? This sh*t is “controversial”? Word?
I like a lot of the effects in this new version but, at the same time, it’s hard to put them over the practical awesomeness in the first version of this movie. It feels properly entrenched in the modern age of cinema. I can’t really say it’s bad but all of this CG really takes away from the mystique of it all.
I don't really like to criticize child actors because they're kids but when you're entire narrative revolves around their performance, it's kind of hard not to. Jahzir Kadeem Bruno as the lead, Hero Boy, isn't terrible at his job but he's definitely not that good either. It's a wildly uneven performance but, you know, he's a kid. This isn't so much a criticism than an observation.
The Verdict
The Witches is a pretty good remake of a classic film. I obviously prefer the original over this one but, for what it is, this version is pretty great. It's chock full of great performances from Octavia Spence, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci. This film looks great, is decently directed, and has a killer soundtrack that compliments every scene in this film. It's not perfect in any way, a lot of the youngsters are really bad in their roles and that definitely takes you out of some scenes. Also, some of the effects are a little shoddy. I blame the Wuha for that. Still, this version of The Witches is pretty entertaining to watch. I had a good time, even if it can be a little underwhelming at times.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (2006)
“My favorite tryhard Haths learning at the feet of the great Meryl. Vince from Entourage playing a chef and I don’t believe that that actor exists as anyone other than Vince.  Is he just Vince now? Did he legally change his name? People keep calling Haths fat and I know that’s the point, but I mean C’mon. Her and EmBlunt are like the same size. I know...I know...it’s fashion. Sure. Yo I know many people who work in NYC and most of them go home at a normal hour. Movies make it seem like every person that moves to NYC work 16-hour days. We don’t.” -Tommy Gazelle
“Never seen this movie start to finish. All I know is Hath looked sessy enough in the beginning scenes where she wears muted sweaters from Kohl’s. Good enough for Vinnie Chase, you know. If they wanted her to really look shite they’d need to like throw her into a big sweatshirt from the Looney Tunes Store. But let’s raise our glass to the Tucc... fearless acting with laser-sharp facial expressions signaling bitchy but mothering instincts. I had plenty of jobs where I worked 12 hour days (never 16). Obviously Tommy never worked in Animation...and obviously I was never in fashion; not with these shoes I aint.” -Sonny Gazelle

The map is up to 519 sites in North America plus 29 sites in Europe. and 1 in Australia. It is becoming increasingly three-dimensional. Because of this, there is one crossover on the map, as well as a number (16) of connections that are keyed in with numbers (so that (1) connects to (1) and so on). Reading the map: -, |, and + indicate connections. Lines never pass through a +, which always indicate where the connecting line ends or changes direction. Logical buses are represented by =. It is becoming increasingly three-dimensional. Because of this, there is one crossover on the map, as well as seven sites that appear twice. Those sites are: burl, esquire, ihps3, inmet, npoiv, princeton, and uw-beaver. Reading the map: -, |, and + indicate connections. Lines never pass through a +, which always indicate where the connecting line ends or changes direction. Logical buses are represented by =. This means that a site such as hplabs is indicated by the entire string of characters as follows: +===hplabs+=+========+.

"Logical buses" are denoted by "=" or "+". A logical bus is merely a way of providing more space to indicate connections to a site. For example, hplabs is represented by the character string "+===hplabs===+". Places on the map where a dash and vertical bar intersect do not represent actual intersections, but rather crossovers (think of them as a highway over/underpass). Unlike the last logical map, there has been no attempt made to differentiate between various types of networks, largely because that information is difficult to obtain.

I am happy to share another collaboration with James Portelli, the guest blogger who wrote route reports for Camino Inglés/Finisterre among many other insightful posts. For this one, James interviewed four friends from Malta who walked the Camino Francés in September and October 2016.
From left to right: John, Alex, Raymond and Pierre
James and John, one of the peregrinos mentioned in this piece, had participated with other Maltese pilgrims on earlier Caminos raising over € 100,000 to support local charities.
Below is the interview, ‘Ultreya Pellegrini Maltin,’ which translates to ‘Onward Maltese Pilgrims.’ Enjoy!
Ultreya Pellegrini Maltin
Introduction
Tucc and I dropped in at the ‘Four Seasons,’ a small wine bar in Birkirkara, Malta, to help send off four friends on their Camino Francés. Pierre German and Raymond Aquilina, both retired, were attempting the full Camino Francés from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago. Alex Tanti and John Chircop, still in employment, accumulated a year’s worth of vacation-leave entitlement to accompany Raymond and Pierre for the first part of the Camino. Alex walked to Burgos and John to Leon. John is returning between April 18-27, 2017, walking from Leon to Sarria with another Maltese Camino aficionado, Joseph Farrugia, attempting the full Camino Francés in Spring of 2017. John had already walked the Sarria-Santiago stint on an earlier Camino in May 2014.
They had been training together for a considerable number of months. Their spirits and sense of camaraderie were high. Their gaze spoke of anticipation. These were four men, from four different walks of life, coming together to embrace the Camino Francés. They all conceded that their earlier training in addition to building stamina was also aimed at fostering a team spirit among them.
Parallel and Shared Experiences
Raymond, a seasoned trekker, had already undertaken the Camino Portugués before from Lisbon to Santiago. “On reaching retirement age I was looking for an exciting experience which marked the beginning of this important stage in life away from the daily work routine.”
“What I liked most about the Camino was experiencing life without any rules or a strict timetable.” This was Ray’s motive. “During the Camino, I discovered new experiences through the various people I met.”
Ray (center) with other Pilgrims
Pierre started to learn Spanish a few years ago, and it was through his Spanish teacher that he learnt about the beauty of walking the Camino.
Pierre: “I instantly became intrigued. I waited three years for my retirement so that I could go and walk the whole Camino Francés.” Pierre conceded that his perspective changed during the Camino, “After a few days of walking, I felt an increased spiritual awareness.” With this came a yearning to foray ahead of the Maltese group of friends. “Everything that happens on the Camino happens for a reason. One morning I met a pilgrim from Lebanon. His name was Francis. It was 6 am, and he seemed to have come out of nowhere. We walked together for a while, sharing each other’s life experiences and at one point I told him “Francis, I feel ashamed.” “Why Pierre?” he asked. I said, “In all my weeks of preparation, compiling lists of things to bring with me and checking and double checking, I forget one important thing.” “What is it, Pierre? He asked. I said, “My rosary beads.” Francis looked at me for a moment, he knelt down, unzipped his backpack and took out a rosary bead. He said “You do not need to feel ashamed any longer my friend. For some reason, I packed two in my bag. Here, this one is for you.” We met each other a couple of other times along the way, and both of us felt as if we had met an angel on the Camino. Meeting others along the way and sharing my experiences was something I looked forward to every day. However, I also believe that one still needs to be alone for some time during the day.”
Alex, John and Pierre with another Pilgrim in Viana
Meeting new people and hearing and sharing experiences is a recurring theme with every pilgrim on the Camino. Raymond relayed a kindred sentiment to Pierre’s, “It is very important . . . every day I encountered different people with whom I shared my experience while also hearing their personal experiences.”
For Alex, a Sales Manager in Malta for one of the leading European automobile brands, this was his first taste of a Camino on Spanish soil. Vacation leave precluded him from walking the whole way with Raymond and Pierre. He joined them from St. Jean Pied de Port to Burgos, as did John. Alex recalled that pilgrims did not just have stories. “Each person—each pilgrim—is a story.”
Alex, Ray and John with other pilgrims stopping for a Pilgrim’s meal at the end of the day
Although the youngest, John is the most experienced trekker of the four; often leading trekking and camping trips in Malta and elsewhere in Europe. This was his third Camino stint having earlier undertaken the Tui-Santiago route on the Camino Portugues and the Sarria-Santiago segment on the Camino Francés. “I knew that sooner or later, somehow, I ‘needed’ to walk the full Camino Francés, starting from St. Jean Pied de Port. I wanted the time spent walking to serve as a means of reflection; a secure, stable but different daily routine which would allow me to enjoy the great Camino experience.” John is still in full-time employment with a leading IT consulting firm so, like Alex, he was constrained to divide the full Camino Francés over two years. “I did not have much time to plan a big trip in 2016. When Ray suggested that I join him on the Camino Francés, I immediately accepted.”
Ray and John with other Pilgrims
What time did they head out each morning? Pierre was an earlier riser and believed in covering more ground in early morning more often than not as a solitary pilgrim. As the day wore in, the pace would relent, and he interacted with more pilgrims on the way. “When I started walking the Camino on my own I set off at 5.30 in the morning.” The earlier start also meant that he covered more ground in a shorter time. “My longest stretch was from Ferrerios to Melide, a distance of around 48 km in one day. My shortest was from Larrasona to Pamplona—14.8 km. I walked from St. Jean Pied de Port to Muxia, a distance of 900 km in 30 days. So, on average I walked 30 km a day.”
Raymond, Alex, and John preferred a slightly later start. They were generally up by 6 am and hit the road soon afterwards. Ray maintained this routine even when he parted ways with Alex and John close to Burgos. “My longest walk was approximately 40 km from Albergue Molin de Marzan in Peruscallo to Palaise de Rei and, walking from San Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela I averaged close to 30 km a day.” John’s longest walk was 36 km from Navarette, and his shortest was 18 km from Burgos to Hontanas, averaging around 28 km per day.
Albergues

A common source of concern for many pilgrims particularly on the longer Caminos is whether to book accommodation ahead of time. “I had provisionally booked many of the albergues as I was concerned about availability due to the large number of pilgrims. I think if there wasn’t this large flow of pilgrims I would have preferred not to book. I had a number of positive surprises when I did not book,” recounted Ray. Like Raymond, Alex had pre-booked his albergues between St. Jean and Burgos. “I would not do it differently when I continue the next leg. Most of the time booking was just by a prior phone call and provided peace of mind.”
John shared the same mixed sentiment as Ray regarding pre-booking albergues. “The popularity of the Camino Francés compared to other routes can prove to be a constant annoyance when it comes to accommodation. I was initially worried about having to participate in a ‘race for beds’ in some of the destinations. Once these thoughts subsided, I could allow my original motivations to work much better. I found myself more outwardly- than inwardly-connecting with the present moment, taking in the scenery, emotions, and people that I was spending time with. Sometimes relying on providence and understanding that the race for beds is not really as big an issue as one thinks makes for a better experience.”
Pierre’s perspective was slightly different. “During the same time that I was walking the Camino there was an incredible number of pilgrims on the way which made it difficult to find a bed. I held back from booking a bed in advance for the first 19 days. But then I had to give in.” In hindsight, he smiles, “It’s not fun being turned away from a number of albergues because they have no vacancies after having walked 30 km or 35 km in a day. Continuing then to the next village was not a joke.”
John added, “Sometimes you really need to play it by ear and go with the flow. The context is more important than pre-planning. For example, when we reached Viana there was a festival about to commence involving the running of the bulls (no cruelty involved). I was almost in tears that we had to leave such a great festival behind because we had pre-booked at the next destination. We shouldn’t under-estimate our gut feeling at times.”
Ray, John, and Pierre praised a number of albergues for offering a unique experience to the pilgrim and for generally making them feel welcomed. These included Albergue Emaus in Burgos, San Luis de Francia at Villamayor de Rio, Albergue San Anton within the monastery ruins (although without electricity or running water on the night they stayed there), the Monastery Albergue in Samos, La Faba, Porta de Santiago in Pedrouzo, Santa Maria in Carrion de Los Condes and Albergue Gaia in Ponferrada. John summed up Emaus as, “a clean and ordered place giving one respite from the Camino madness,” in Burgos. Alex also echoed their praise for some of the albergues, singling out Albergue Emaus in Burgos describing it as, “Outstanding!”
Regrettably, three albergues fell below expectations. “Worst was Santa Marija de Carbajal in Leon because of bed bugs. Albergue Jesus in Manzarife and Albergue Calzadilla de los Mermanillos were relatively shabby and lacked cleanliness.” John was even less courteous towards Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, stating categorically, “avoid like the plague.”
Route Highlights
Despite the adverse albergue experience, both Pierre and Raymond agreed that Leon was a beautiful town. “I was happy to spend an extra day in Leon and wished I had done the same in Burgos. Both cities have a lot of history and places worth visiting,” said Pierre. Ray agreed, “Leon is a wonderful city which deserves another day.”
Ray continued, “The Camino Francés can be split into diverse stages. The Napoleon Route marks the first day, followed by the Basque region with exciting Pamplona. Subsequently, the Burgos to Leon route through the Meseta leads to Galicia. Galicia points to Santiago.”
“Santiago is a wonderful city especially around the Cathedral where many pilgrims meet upon arrival after days of walking. One has to, however, ignore the commercial subliminal.”
Focusing on Santiago, John reminded us that several peregrinos described reaching Santiago as something of an anti-climax, adding “I may agree with this point of view although I hasten to add that this is more of an inward perspective, rather than opinion of this wonderful Medieval city. Santiago is indeed a beautiful city however one needs to be psychologically prepared to deal with the feeling that the journey is ‘over,’” concluding with a question, “But is this even possible?”
Pierre ups the stakes, “I feel that the Santiago to Fisterra route should be part and parcel of the Camino. For me, while arriving in Santiago yielded a sense of fulfillment, walking to the edge—to Fisterra—was when I felt that my mission was really accomplished. I then also continued to Muxia on foot, returning to Santiago by bus.”
Spiritual or Temporal
Pierre sums up his overall Camino experience, “For the spiritual pilgrims the Camino offers the chance to find and discover the inner self. To achieve this, it is necessary to walk parts of the Camino all alone. For me, it strengthened my bond with God, strengthened my faith like never before. Before I started, I outlined some points which I wanted the Camino to help me see in a different way. Once on the road, I realised I did not need to think ahead. Silent introspection on the Way helped sort out priorities and identify what I had been missing in life. At the same time, I was thankful for other aspects of my life. Months after the Camino experience I can’t really say that I am back. The Camino keeps calling me to return. A big part of my life is still there, waiting for me.”
Asked to sum up the Camino experience in a few words, John hesitated, “I’m not sure that I want to reply with an answer that does not do it justice. It is a microcosm of life, where time spent on the Camino slows down and days become longer. Undertaking the Camino with preconceived ideas and an ill-prepared body will lead to needless pain and suffering. One needs to go there with an open mind and little expectation and encounter pleasant surprises in ways I would struggle to explain. It can be a splendid or miserable adventure, depending on what you want to make it.”
Ray coined it in a much shorter but equally loaded phrase, “It was a most cherished lifetime experience.”
Alex, determined to return, “Rediscover life . . . Walk the Camino.”
