Black Rain Frog
Tumblr media
AKA plain rain frog, brown short-headed frog, tsitsikamma frog, Breviceps fuscus
A little avocado...
Rain frogs can look a little silly, like little balls with arms, but they're also very interesting! They spend most of the day burrowed up in soil or leaves, and don't hatch as tadpoles - their babies are already frog-shaped, and called froglets!
Black rain frogs in particular have little inward-facing arms that make them better at burrowing! They're only found within a small region of South Africa, and can be up to 2 inches long.
They live in shrubland, preferably near sand they can burrow up in, and don't like living near open water. They only live their 6-inch-long tunnels at night, in order to hunt and mate. They can also inflate to try to scare off predators, getting up to 7 times as big!!

The Stars Collide - Chapter 28
Posting another chapter, as a treat. Next chapter will have Charles' death scene. If you have theories as to what happened, please let me know. The waterfall was inspired by the waterfall I walked to in South Africa in Tsitsikamma. I don't think I'd recommend diving off of it, but my uncle did (not when I was there). He's kind of a reckless idiot, and when his friend bragged about diving off of the waterfall when he'd really just jumped off halfway, my uncle was like sure, I can do that too.
CW for PTSD symptoms, unethical experiments
Alastair took in a deep breath. Everything was going to be alright. Thomas was right there, he was safe here. He just needed to remember, that’s all. The lab looked abandoned and in a worse state than it was in his memory.
‘Do you remember the way?’ Thomas asked.
‘It’s this way to the room where the experiments were,’ Alastair said, and in the moment he was hit by another memory.
It was at a later time than the other memory he’d recovered, that he knew for sure. He didn’t know how many times he’d been here already, but it was plenty. He was following Charles into the corridor. He didn’t want to, he was so tired of this place and he wanted to go home, but he knew what Charles would do if he protested again.
‘You’ll behave this time, won’t you darling?’ Charles had said on the way here.
He would. He didn’t want to, but he would. He was so tired of it all. Better to just get it over with, and then Charles would be happy. They’d been stuck in their research for a while now, and Charles was upset about it. Apparently, they’d enhanced his power to maximum capabilities already. Anymore, and his power would turn so instable it might start hurting him. What they wanted to do now was extract some of his power and place it in objects, in a new machine that would allow them to read and alter other people’s memories without him. It was an awful thing to do, Alastair knew that, and he hated himself for being part of this, but no matter how much he tried he couldn’t talk Charles out of it.
‘Are you sure you don’t have any other ideas?’ Charles said. ‘There has to be a way to make it work.’
‘Yes, but we’re not there yet,’ a woman said.
She was blonde and wearing a lab coat, and she had her back turned towards Alastair. Something about her was familiar, but he wouldn’t get anywhere unless he could see her face.
‘Dr. Blackthorn, so far you’ve been trying to move Alastair’s power into a machine. But what if the power is so tied to a neurological structure that it needs to be housed in another human brain?’
‘We’ve considered that,’ the woman said. ‘And it is one of our goals for the long term. However, the experiments with moving powers that have been done under the emperor rarely turned out well. There are risks involved and I do not think the technology is far advanced enough to justify the risk.’
Alastair was pulled out of the memory and found himself on the floor in the current day lab, shaking, with Thomas kneeling down in front of him.
‘Alastair, look at me.’
‘I’m here,’ Alastair said.
There was more in that memory, he needed to know more, but he couldn’t go back there. He was so scared what he’d find. What Charles had done.
‘Come, let’s go back,’ Thomas said. ‘We’ll try again tomorrow.’
‘There’s more here,’ Alastair insisted. ‘I can remember it all.’
‘The lab isn’t going anywhere,’ Thomas said, pressing a kiss to his forehead. ‘We’ll try again tomorrow, okay?’
Thomas walked them back to the submarine, where Gabriel was waiting.
‘Back already?’ he asked.
‘We’re taking it slow,’ Thomas said. ‘One flashback is more than enough for a day.’
Alastair had to admit Thomas was right. It was devastating to go back, to relive everything, and there was only so much of it he could take. He was so tired of it all.
‘What did you find out?’ Thomas asked once they were both seated in the submarine.
‘I’m under the impression that dr. Blackthorn is the lead scientist on the project. She’s a blonde woman, but I only saw her from the back today. I’m sure if I remember more I can recall her face.’
‘Blackthorn,’ Gabriel said. ‘Are you sure she said Blackthorn?’
‘Yes, I’m quite sure.’
‘That’s my sister’s last name,’ Gabriel said.
Alastair frowned, checked back in the past for a moment. ‘The woman whose portrait is in the old study in Lightwood Manor?’
‘The very same,’ Gabriel said. ‘I didn’t know it was still there, I figured Gideon would have put her away.’
‘It’s a room no one uses,’ Thomas said. ‘My dad could never bring himself to throw it all away.’
‘It’s a sensitive point for both of us,’ Gabriel said. ‘As is Tatiana. She left a long time ago.’
‘The woman I saw couldn’t be Tatiana though,’ Alastair said. ‘Dr. Blackthorn was blonde. Though I guess she could have died her hair. I got the impression she was young, but I didn’t see her face yet.’
‘Maybe tomorrow,’ Gabriel said. ‘I am going to try to look into Tatiana. I haven’t spoken to her in a long time and was under the impression she had left this solar system. If she’s back…’
Alastair couldn’t imagine having a sister who’d turned her back on her family like that. It made him feel guilty. Hadn’t he done the same, running off with Charles when his family needed him? But he was reconciling with them, and Cordelia and his mother were all on his side. It was difficult, but they were going to make things work. He would never do what Tatiana had done.
‘That’s fine,’ Alastair said. ‘But surely the name Blackthorn is more common?’
‘It is a Fair name,’ Gabriel said. ‘However, Rupert Blackthorn did not have a lot of family who bore the same name. Rupert was Tatiana’s husband, before he died.’
‘Could they have had a child?’ Thomas asked.
‘They weren’t married for very long. If they had a child, then I didn’t know about it,’ Gabriel said. ‘Rupert died after only a couple of weeks of marriage.’
Once they’d made it back to the harbor, Alastair called Cordelia, who was waiting for them by the hotel they were staying at.
‘Come change into your swimsuit because I’m going to show you to the waterfall,’ Cordelia said.
‘I don’t know…,’ Alastair said softly.
He was tired, he wasn’t sure he felt up to an excursion.
‘Come on,’ Cordelia said. ‘You’re not going to spend the rest of the day inside. It’s going to be fun, and you need the exercise.’
Saying no was not an option, so Alastair changed into his swimsuit and put on a shirt and a pair of pants over it. He’d still have to walk all the way to wherever the waterfall was.
It wasn’t far, Cordelia had said. In the end, the walk took an hour and involved quite a bit of rock climbing. Nothing dangerous or high, but if he’d brought a dog along for this walk they would have had to turn back. Maybe he should get a pet when all of this was over, although Alastair guessed a cat might be a better match for him than a dog.
‘The best places always take some effort to reach,’ Cordelia said. ‘And honestly, this was nothing. Do you remember that natural spa in the mountains we visited? Now that was a walk.’
Alastair remembered. The natural spa itself had been wonderful, a pool of warm water exactly at bath temperature. There was another natural spa in a far more easy to reach area, with a parking lot right next to it, but that one was permanently filled with tourists and Alastair didn’t like being around that many people. Instead, he and Cordelia had opted to visit the more difficult to reach spa to have more privacy. They’d started their walk early in the morning, and had reached the spa around noon, and it had involved lots of climbing, including some dangerous parts that Alastair would certainly not repeat with his current body. He used to be so much stronger.
The waterfall was pretty, and ended in a bigger basin than he’d anticipated. There were no other people there and he could swim as much as he wanted. He took off his clothes and dipped his toe into the basin. It was cold, but the weather here was much warmer than in Lightwood. It would be fine.
Thomas jumped in, causing a splash of water that hit Alastair in the face.
‘Seriously?’ Alastair hissed.
‘I’m sorry, darling,’ Thomas said.
Alastair took a step back. He needed to get away, he wasn’t safe here. He didn’t know where to go, he was shaking on his legs. Why had he agreed to let Cordelia take him here? The worst thing was, he didn’t know why he was feeling like this, why it had come so suddenly.
‘Alastair?’ Thomas asked. ‘Are you alright?’
He was safe, he told himself. It was like trying to convince the stubbornest of mules of something, telling himself over and over that he was safe, that there was nothing bad going to happen. His brain would never accept it. Perhaps today had been too much.
‘I’m fine,’ he hissed.
‘Did you have another flashback?’ Thomas asked.
He remembered what his therapist had told him, how they’d discussed emotional flashbacks. Of course, that was what this was. He sat down with his feet in the water. It was a nice sensation to have his feet dangling in the water while the rest of his body was still dry. The fear didn’t quite go away, but he felt like he could breathe again.
‘Do not ever call me darling again,’ Alastair said.
‘It sounds stupid, doesn’t it?’ Thomas said. ‘It makes me feel like an old guy. I was just trying something out, but this is not it.’
‘It’s what Charles called me,’ Alastair said.
That’s what had happened, wasn’t it? Hearing Thomas call him darling, that made him feel the way he’d felt when he’d been with Charles. When Charles had apologized to him with no intention of ever changing his behavior. An apology that at the same time tried to place the blame on him. An apology that was little more than an attempt to manipulate him. And Alastair hated that it had worked so well.
‘Oh. I’m so sorry,’ Thomas said.
‘You didn’t know,’ Alastair said. ‘You know what, why don’t you try some Turanian terms of endearment? Charles never did that, and you already speak the language.’
‘That sounds like an excellent idea, delbaram,’ Thomas said. ‘I admit that’s the only one I remember, I have never had a Turanian partner before.’
‘I love it,’ Alastair said. ‘I’ll teach you some more sometime.’
Thomas climbed out of the water, sitting down next to him, suddenly towering over him again. It had been a weird sight to look down on Thomas while he was in the water.
He looked up at the waterfall, and saw that Cordelia was climbing it. Because of course. She stayed to the drier side of the rocks, but even then they had to get somewhat wet, right? Cordelia kept going, all the while Alastair forced himself to look, forced himself to breathe. Before long she reached the top of the waterfall, waving down at them. Lucie was taking pictures, and started filming as Cordelia dove down the waterfall, an elegant trail all into the middle of the basin. She came up not long after, swimming up to Alastair.
‘That was fun,’ she said.
‘You are insane.’
‘Do you want to try?’
‘Absolutely not. Those rocks look slippery. And diving off a waterfall seems dangerous.’
‘I read about this waterfall, the basin is more than deep enough,’ Cordelia said. ‘Are you at least going for a swim?’
‘In a moment,’ Alastair said. ‘But I’d rather not stay too long. I’m still feeling like shit.’
‘Oh, I’m sorry,’ Cordelia said. ‘Is there anything we can do to make it better?’
‘I don’t know. Usually, I’m just really tired after the fact,’ Alastair said. ‘But sleeping doesn’t really make me feel better, so maybe I should give swimming a try.’
Swimming didn’t magically make him feel good or better, but it was nice. The sensation of the water, the temperature which he got used to pretty fast. Thomas, swimming along with him, and at some point lifting him onto his shoulders. They went back when they had about an hour of light left, climbing back down until they were back in the town.
They had dinner outside the hotel and Alastair retired to his bedroom early while Thomas, Lucie and Cordelia went for another walk to the beach. He’d already taken a nap by the time Thomas returned.
‘Hey delbaram,’ Alastair said when Thomas entered.
‘You’re still awake?’
‘I already slept,’ Alastair said. ‘Feeling a little better. Come here, I want to feel you here.’
Thomas joined him in bed and started kissing him. Alastair gasped as he leaned into the embrace, desire building up inside of him. He loved how Thomas could make him feel so good, how Thomas never hesitated to show him his love.
Alastair left for the harbor early the next morning. The sooner he got this over with, the more time he’d get to spend on the islands with Cordelia, Lucie and Thomas. Yes, he would be exhausted after having a flashback, but if he went with her first he’d spent the entire day with anticipation anxiety, which was worse.
Gabriel took them to the lab on submarine. ‘I found nothing on Tatiana so far,’ he said. ‘But I’ll keep looking.’
Alastair led Thomas to the room where the experiments had taken place immediately. The machine was gone, but some of the chairs were still there alongside some broken equipment.
He sat down in one of the chairs. This was it, he had to remember. And he did. It was the same day as the previous memory, a little further along. He was seated in the same chair.
‘I want to try,’ Charles said.
‘If you’re sure,’ the woman said, and when she turned her head around, Alastair realized why she had seemed so familiar. He did know her. Dr. Blackthorn was Grace, Christopher’s lab partner.

Day 4: Bungee jumping, zip lining, and all that dumb stuff! No judgement, just not for me. I went zip lining in Costa Rica and loved it. Once was enough for me.
For those of you who know me fairly well, I love adventure but not the kind that especially puts risking my legs and feet health. I love walking the most, so I want to be able to walk upright until the day I die.
Can you tell how cool and brave I felt walking the length of this bridge?! This is about the most risk I’m willing to take these days.😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty cool pics of the bridge, vistas and walkway across.
Tumblr media
This guy, Lebo, went bungee jumping for the second time! I recorded a bunch of videos for him as a memory. He told me he looked down the second before jumping, got scared and ended up jumping feet first vs. head first as instructed. He was fine nonetheless. Look how happy he looks in this pic taken after he took the plunge!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After all these activities, we went to Tsitsikamma National Park for lunch and a hike. We never made it to these suspension bridges, but hiked in for as long as we could to catch a glimpse and take a pic. Was a beautiful hike, just not enough time.
We had a long three hour drive remaining to get to Addo Elephant National Park for Day 5.

Unlocking the Wonders of South Africa
Tumblr media
Embarking on a journey to South Africa promises a kaleidoscope of experiences, from vibrant urban life to serene countryside retreats. Proper preparation is key to making the most of your visit to this diverse and enchanting country. Before packing your bags, it's crucial to ensure you have all the necessary travel documents. Obtaining a visa for South Africa requires submitting the requisite forms, passport-sized photographs, proof of accommodation, and a detailed itinerary. Make sure to check the latest requirements on the official South African government website to avoid any last-minute hassles.
South Africa boasts a plethora of must-visit destinations, ranging from iconic cities to hidden gems in the countryside. In the urban landscape, Cape Town's Table Mountain, the historic Robben Island, and the vibrant V&A Waterfront are essential stops. Johannesburg, with its cultural precinct of Maboneng, offers a unique blend of art, history, and modernity. Venturing into the smaller towns and countryside reveals the heart of South Africa. Places like Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, known for its wineries, or the picturesque Drakensberg Mountains, offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city life.
For adventure enthusiasts, exploring South Africa on two wheels is a thrilling option. Before embarking on a long bike ride or mountain biking adventure, ensure your equipment is in top condition. Consider the varied terrains and weather conditions, and pack accordingly. Whether to travel by personal vehicle or public transport depends on your preferences and the areas you plan to visit. Public transportation is well-developed in major cities, but having a personal vehicle allows more flexibility, especially when exploring the countryside.
Accommodation is a significant consideration for budget-conscious travelers. Couchsurfing, a platform connecting travelers with locals willing to host them for free, is a fantastic option for cultural immersion and cost-effective lodging. Alternatively, numerous budget-friendly hotels cater to the needs of backpackers and thrifty tourists.
Renting a vehicle or a bike as a tourist in South Africa is relatively straightforward. Many international car rental agencies operate in major cities, and bike rental shops are also available for those seeking a more adventurous mode of transportation. Familiarize yourself with South Africa's traffic rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
For outdoor enthusiasts, South Africa offers incredible hiking and camping opportunities. The Drakensberg Mountains, Tsitsikamma National Park, and Table Mountain provide stunning landscapes for hiking, while solo camping can be experienced in the expansive wilderness areas. Always prioritize safety and adhere to park regulations.
