164: Timelash // A Morphology of Wonders
A Morphology of Wonders
Timelash
2021, Aguirre (Bandcamp)
This was sold to me (or rather, given to me by a pal) as ambient psych, and that’s in the right ballpark, though it could just as easily be called squelchy New Age or discreet prog. The compositions are busy enough that they’re not going to completely fade into the background, but the melodic ideas unfold gradually enough you need to concentrate a bit to grasp the whole elephant as it were. A Morphology of Wonders is packaged as an alien taxonomic expedition (in biology ‘morphology’ is the study of the structures and constituent parts of living things), and it’s easy to imagine parts of this soundtracking an exhibition of speculative flora and fauna at a museum. It has a humid, rainforesty vibe—the ingenious percussion often has echoes of Balinese gamelan, and the synth tones can be suggestive of the flutes used by indigenous Andean musicians. But there’s also an, I think, intentional degree of cheese—the number of vintage Del Rey and Tor paperbacks in these guys’ apartments is no doubt in the mid-three-digit range, and they have surely rolled a joint or two on the sleeve of a Kitarō LP. It’s hard to take seriously meditation music that sounds geared to Californians with large gold medallions nestled in their chest hair, but I think Timelash ultimately want the listener to be delighted by the textures they conjure from their instruments, the fantastical documentaries this music can help project onto the backs of one’s drowsing eyelids.

16. James Holden | Imagine This Is a High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities
🏴 Angleterre | Border Community | 65 minutes | 12 morceaux
