5/10 This is a soap opera in movie format. Nice lighting, cute performances, nicely coloured and juuuuuust enough intrigue and narrative twist to keep you interested and hanging on until the end. I don’t know if it’s my age, or maybe I’m having a difficult week, but again, these movies just feel so long. Wrap. It. Up. It’s really only in the final moments that we reach the climax and I’m just so tired by this point it’s hard to maintain investment. Ok, so we have an extended and broken family of performers working in a club, and the police officer by day, bodyguard by night who ends up becoming a part of this family - in more ways than one. Or something. Things I loved - the embracing love of trans drag performer and singer Imã by the family, and especially the patriarch of the club the Grandpa. I also loved the romance between Imã and Pedro. Things I didn’t like: of course there is a hate crime within the first ten minutes UGH. Ok. But this bashing does move the plot forward, so I’ll let it go, but come ON puh-lease. Imã is played by queer Mexican artist Jaloo, and that’s fab.I am here for that. We really could have skipped some of the soap opera high drama, and maybe some of the side stories that seem very insular and gets in the way of what should be focussed primarily on Imã. Maybe again, I’m biased, but I came here for the trans character’s rise to glory, and it’s sort of overshadowed by the straight character (cop) AGAIN. It’s an okay watch, but doesn’t offer any great insights or revelations outside of a telenovela style narrative. Also there are some hilariously bizarre sound effects in here, particularly a slap sound in the second hate crime. Paraiso perdido IMDBdo.

The film has about as much authenticity as you can get, starring two fantastically cast transgender women of colour. And yet, directed by a cis, white, heterosexual male, Tangerine is proof that groundbreaking queer cinema with strong and authentic representation can be accomplished with LGBT allies at the helm.

So...

I watched 3 Generations last night. I don't normally cry. But after seeing this movie, I cried. Like a baby. A big bubble blowing baby like I am. I needed this movie. Other people probably needed this movie too. I hadn't heard of this movie until recently so that's why I didn't watch it until last night. I may not believe in magic, but I do believe the things you need come to you exactly when you need them. And I needed this. I needed to see a movie that accurately represented a trans guy. I know it represents a slim view of certain trans guys. But I happen to sort of look like that slim view. And it was something I needed to see. I needed to see that it could work out, even if it didn't the way you thought it would. No matter how many people told me it would be okay eventually I just didn't believe them. No matter how many people I saw it work out for I didn't believe them. I needed to see someone like me, and I needed to see events unfold and everything turn out okay. I don't know what I'm going to do. But now, I know everything is okay. I'm okay. Things will turn out okay for me. This movie probably changed my life. And I am so so so so glad it did.

A story spanning the year 1999 to 2000. Huckleberry pursues his unrequited love Jolene, adrift in an abusive relationship, in spite of his love’s loathsome boyfriend, Clint. Rebuffed, Huckleberry confronts Clint once and for all, but not before unleashing hell upon him while still cloaked in the lingering shadow of his undiscovered intentions.

Huckleberry discovers consequence follows action, and violence begets violence as he navigates a particularly intense year, and confronts the life-changing aftermath of his decisions.”
