I’m so excited for the pac-12 tournament like i hope it is as good as advertised and i’m sure it will be, i just want lots of close games!! Also my “bold” prediction is whoever wins the pac tournament goes all the way to the natty game (assuming it’s stanford or ucla it’s probs not that bold haha)

I have a feeling the Pac-12 tournament is going to be insane and I'm so excited. It was my favorite tournament like who had WSU winning last season? I really hope we get something as insane as that again.

I currently have Stanford winning the natty just on vibes so like this would check out but my bold prediction is that Oregon State is gonna win the whole thing which actually isn't that bold at all because they're #4 but I feel like it's still a bold prediction lol.

i was looking through the results from outfit tournament interest form (which will be closed in about a little over 12 hours as of posting this so if you're interested in this and haven't filled it in yet please do!), and only 28% (7/25) want the students' uniforms category so i'm considering removing it. however i still i want there to be an even total number of categories (including the uniforms it's 10) so i'm considering replacing the uniforms category with another, like the "mankai encore" outfits

Welcome to the Ultimate Blorbo Bracket, season 3!

This will be the final Blorbo Bracket tournament and this time around, all of the previous characters that competed in the other two tournmanets will be competing again for Ultimate Blorbo status!

However, that won't be all though! Submissions for new characters are open once more for newcomers to come along and compete! The rules and criteria will be as follows:

The Champions from the previous two tournaments will not be allowed to compete again, which were Ingo and Emmet from the Pokemon series (sorry Submas fans!)

Feel free to submit your favorite character from any series! Whether it be tv show, video game, movie, book, web series, etc! 

You are also allowed to submit as many characters as you like! If you have a lot of favorite characters from different series, or if you have more than one favorite from a single series. The  power is yours!

Do you ever think about how many animators got their start on newgrounds and in flash? I think about it a lot. I ended up watching a compilation of all the HSR cartoons while I was working since it's like 9 hours long and includes all the extra toons that were included on the dvds, and it made me think about just how old they are. I was watching these when I first moved in with my dad. I still remember trying to get my friends to watch sbemails with me over lunch. The Brothers Chapps had such a profound impact on my humor and art that I'm still unintentionally dropping chappisms in normal conversation years later, four years after flash's death and much longer after the site stopped regularly updating.

They both wrote for Gravity Falls and the Aquabats Super Show. I didn't know this going into either of them. I saw a man dressed in a top hat and wrestling mask in Cobraman and didn't think twice 'til I recognized his voice and figured out it was Matt Fucking Chapman. Seeing HSR characters in Aquabats at all is fucking nuts to me. You mean that little red cunt i watched in kindergarten is here? right now? in my tv show? ridiculous. time is meaningless.

The reason I mention it is because it happened again recently. I started getting into Monkey Wrench, which is headed by Zeurel, the same guy who animated those excellent Vinesauce Joel videos.

The thing is, I recognize Shrike, one of the main characters, and I just realised why. This guy has been animating since newgrounds. I saw his old stuff. I was watching Colosseum Tournmanet and keeping up with it regularly with a friend. This guy has had the same ocs for nearly sixteen years. I thought I was having a stroke when I saw the promotional material for Monkey Wrench on my dashboard.

Do you know the guy who made OneShot? Did you know that he made a fucking cavestory mod called WTFStory? Do you know how I knew about GIRakaCHEEZER? NOT THROUGH ONESHOT.

The world is a very small place and I think that's wonderful. I think that's what I was trying to get at. I'm not trying to be existential either. It's hard for me to properly express how excited i am to recognize someone i looked up to as a kid, and to see them still making things. especially as an artist who grew up on sites like newgrounds and learned how to draw because of cartoons like Homestar Runner. Newgrounds, AlbinoBlackSheep and a lot of really early internet forums paved the way for a lot of creators, and it's terrifying and extremely comforting to know that people who might have had a really strong impact on you when you were young are still around, still healthy, and still making things.

ohh our art and actions and words have consquences. something you created for fun can have a profound impact on a strangers life. time is eternal and ever marching and thats a good thing actually

Happy birthday Vera Menchik (1906-44)!

Vera Menchik was a Russian-born Czechoslovak chess player who primarily resided in England. The first and longest-reigning Women's World Chess Champion, she won the championship eight times from 1927 to 1944, mainly in round-robin tournaments which she totally dominated (to the point that Alekhine once commented it was unfair she had to keep defending her title when her dominance was so obvious). Sadly, she was killed by a V1 rocket at her home in London in 1944, aged only 38.

Although her life was cut tragically short, she achieved a helluva a lot and should be remembered as an important part of chess history. A few points are needed to fully appreciate Menchik's chess career.

First, she was the first woman to compete in master's level tournaments against some of the world's best male players which she did throughout the 1920s and 1930s - people like Alekhine, Capablanca, Reshevksy, Maroczy, Rubinstein, Euwe.

She did this despite considerable sexism. Both the press and players joked that those who lost to her were members of the "Vera Menchik Club" - a term first mockingly suggested by Albert Becker to make fun of her at the Carlsbad tournament in 1929 when she lost her first game. Before that tournmanet, one journalist - Hans Kmoch - said he would "go on stage as a ballerina" if she scored more than three points.

Fittingly, Menchik beat Becker in the tournament, making him the first member of the "club" he'd just suggested, and Kmoch was forced to public express regret for his comment when she did indeed score three points.

The idea of the "Vera Menchik Club" took off in the press after that, though it became more a term of respect - when FIDE began awarding the title of Grandmaster in 1950 four of the new GMs were members of the club and eight were "candidate members" having only drawn against her. When a member of the "club" includes a World Champion like Max Euwe, it's an impressive club!

Secondly, Menchik did all this while NOT being a full-time professional player or even aiming to be fully dedicated to chess, unlike the world's top players of the time. That's not to say she didn't have a big impact on the game though, especially in Britain where she gave lessons, was chess editor for different journals, edited Social Chess with William Winter, was a columnist and editor for Chess magazine, and served as director of the British National Chess Centre.

It's also not to say she wasn't a flipping good chess player. According to chess.com she was on a level with the strongest male British chess players of the time who were "undeniably strong players" though "a level below the Laskers, Capablancas, and Alekhines of the world". Nevertheless, the top players treated her with respect. After that 1929 tournament where she was mocked, Alekhine - then the reigning World Champion - commented:

"She indisputably has attained her three points against the strong masters, but it is little known to the public that she has also attained superior positions against Euwe, Treybal, Colle and Dr. Vidmar. She was beaten by Dr. Vidmar only after a nine hour match. It is the chess world's duty to grant her every possibility for development."

Similarly, when asked "are there any women who played good chess" in 1932, Capablanca replied, "One. Her name is Vera Menchik. She is Czechoslovakian and Slavic and was trained in England, where she now lives. She played against me and she is very strong."

She even apparently inspired a 1929 Vogue cover!

Her legacy is long-lasting. As chess.com notes, "to this day the winning nation in the Women’s Olympiad is awarded the Vera Menchik Cup, a fitting way to remember the first world champion".
