In TOS s3 ep4 an alien manipulates the crew with their deepest fears. For Sulu its swords (?), for Uhura its dying (or being an old woman which. ugh.) and for Kirk its 2 things: that he's lost control of the enterprise and that he is alone.

Previously Spock (who is with Kirk) was also manipulated, though not with fear -- he was convinced that the enterprise was under control, and everything was proceeding to plan. I read this as the alien preying on Spock's implicit trust in the Captain (maybe its not that deep lol).

Anyway. Kirk chokes Spock (who has by this point snapped out of the alien control) and this brings him back to reality (Amok Time throwback anyone?). They're super close and Kirk lingers staring at Spock for a moment. So. There are two ways to read this scene. 1) like in Amok Time, Jim hurting Spock is so wrong it brings him back to himself. And/or 2) Kirk can't feel out of control or alone when faced with Spock's loyalty.

It's a good scene.

One thing I'm truly enjoying about watching TOS is that no one has the perfect, airbrushed features we see on TV actors nowadays. Takei and Nimoy both have prominent acne scars, Kelley and Nimoy have crooked teeth. Everyone has crowsfeet and other wrinkles. I know the show was never meant to be displayed in such high definition, we aren't meant to see those features, just like we aren't meant to see the make-up or the uniform zippers. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful little time capsule of human imperfection and I smile every time I notice a new one.

Bro when Kirk thought all was lost, that Sybok has brainwashed his friends, he had lost all hope!! 😭 But then Spock surprises him, tells Sybok of course he can't go with him, his place is here with Jim.

And then Bones? He tells him he's staying too!

Sybok couldn't brainwash the two of them! Because they knew who they were! They knew their place was there with Kirk 😭😢

🤔 Hmmm. Hmmmm. Hmmmmmm.

Like, OK. Spock's dream could be recalling Chapel's love confession to him given that he walked away from her then in The Naked Time, and in Amok Time, Chapel is shown to be going out of her way to prepare Vulcan food explicitly for Spock. Like, if that ain't love.... But, between Spock being a Vulcan, gay, and out of his mind with the changes brought by Pon Farr, of course, he doesn't see it. (Or. Given the subject of Pon Farr and his fears of losing control.... his dream could have been that he assaulted her. Everything is subtle enough that it could get past the censors, especially where dreams are concerned because writers would use that as the "It's Not Real, Gotcha!" defense against censor/Hayes Code objections.)

But it strangely parallels what Kirk says after Spock is done with the exposition speech about Vulcans and Pon Farr. And in this case, while it so strangely placed (was it an improv? Or scripted?), Kirk's response is akin to the "I'm so shocked at everything I've just heard I can not process it."

Regardless, it's telling that between these two instances and earlier when Spock says he doesn't recall ordering the ship to change course to Vulcan, there's a lot of miscommunication/outright communication gaps and the dialogue itself is pointing it out. (Is it foreshadowing, given what will happen? Lol.)
