Someone said there wasn't a lot of Frieren fanfic and I looked and there's barely 250 total on AO3 and now I'm like.
I have a Frieren plot bunny.
I could write a Frieren fic.

There are so much subtle implications of this encounter, and the way the story-telling is executed very neatly here still astounds me even on my second and third watch.
Frieren, the mage who helped and succeeded defeating the Demon King, emotionlessly explained to her unexperienced pupil about this demon, Elder Sage of Corruption, who invented Killing Magic so lethal that obliterated 40% adventurers and 70% of mages in the region. The demon was that bothersome that she had to put him on hold in temporary seal so they could continue their journey to kill The Demon King, because she nearly got defeated by it. Sounds worrisome, but then most human around that region typically don't live longer than a hundred years (the thought must be even more prodding now that her party had left her one by one from old age), and Frieren must've kept this in her mind, and it takes precisely no more than eighty years for the seal to become unstable; endangering so many lives once more.
We are the audience, but in this moment we are also Frieren's intrigued pupils. No one knows yet what's the plan, and it's Fern who learned the defensive spell first-hand while all we could do is watch. Ask: Frieren... what do you mean Fern is ready to face this demon? She's never fought a demon before, right? And this is the one demon who you considered so powerful. This is the demon who almost killed you and your friends back in the day...
And there's your answer. Back in the day, Qual the demon was dangerously powerful. Even in present day, eighty years later, Qual the demon is sharp enough to catch up with what's he missed. Qual figures out the complex defensive spell against Zoltraak that needed years for mages all across the land to create and perfected, from vague analysis, only in a minute. From that alone and countless experiences, Frieren knows better not to be cocky, even when she's told her (again) unexperienced pupil to protect her from Qual's relentless Zoltraak, because she knows the study and the result are going to work.
Only Frieren is sure of that, though. Lets Qual think he still has the chance to regain the upper hand. Doesn't care that Fern doesn't know either because, regardless of anything, fear will not compare to and withstand the experience at last, and Frieren wants Fern to feel proud of herself too when she defeats this demon who almost (almost) defeated her mentor once, a long time ago.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 20 Review - An Actual Cliff In A Cliffhanger
This episode legit ends with a cliff showing up, so it’s a cliffhanger! …I am sorry for the awful dad joke. Anyways, the first selection continues as we learn more about the other mages. I think that learning more about the other mages is a nice add in because the mages from Wirbel’s group and Denken’s group are most likely going to be recurring characters later on in this arc. They are totally not going to fail the first selection; they have way too much focus to be taken out of the spotlight this soon.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about Wirbel’s group first. Wirbel is surprisingly a nice guy underneath his scary demeanor. He knows how to kill and has killed women and children before, but he knows when he should and shouldn’t do so. He had a flashback of his time as a mercenary of the Northern Magic Corps. It was a cruel job as he had to kill so many innocent lives in addition to killing demons. Yet, he did it all because he had a crush on someone and promised that he’d make the world a better place when they meet again. Seeing how he is similar yet different from Ubel really makes him stand out. I can’t wait to see more of him later on. I really liked the scene where he fell for Fern’s bluff when she was pointing her staff at him.
Poor Ehre. She was valedictorian of her class at a prestigious magic school, but she lost to Fern, the girl who was basically homeschooled all her life. Imagine being someone who has a Bachelors, Master’s and PhD and then losing a huge job opportunity to someone who only had a high school diploma. Would that be a big kick in the face for the most educated person? That’s what Ehre’s situation was. She lost to Fern, who was trained under Frieren, but never having a proper formal education in an academic institution. If I was Ehre, I’d be ashamed; I hope that this would be a moment for her to become humble, not that she wasn’t.
Scharf has a cool ability, but he doesn’t have much spotlight. He is able to solidify flower petals and turn them into magic. He gets knocked out by Land and then wasted so much mana that he had to get floated around by Wirbel. I think that showcasing Scharf and Land’s abilities at the same time was a smart idea because it shows how different they fight as mages. Land is someone who has trust issues, so he summons clones of himself to fight in his place and deceive enemies while the real him can take shots when the enemy is distracted. Out of the two mages, Land’s magic is the most terrifying.
Now for Denken’s group, Lauren’s magic is Jilwer, an ancient spell that gives the user super sonic speed. Since she’s still a novice, she’s not good at concealing her mana when using it yet, so that’s why she’s backing out of the upcoming fight; she did steal Frieren’s stille, though. Richter’s magic seems to be manipulating Earth? Either that or he can create tremors. I can’t tell. However, he’s the most sadistic of the group as he wanted to kill either Lawine or Kanne when Denken told him not to as both are still kids and knocking them out is more efficient. When Denken said that, I instantly liked him because he’s honest and has morals. He’s still an enemy, but he’s an honorable kind of person. He wants to fight Frieren and I can’t wait to see what sort of spells he has.
The scenes with Genau and Sense are interesting as Genau purposely proctored an exam where people will be killed to prove to see who is qualified to become a First-Class mage. I do wonder if Sense is the girl that Wirbel had a crush on.
Now, there’s a bit of foreshadowing of an elf called Serie; I’m using “they” because I have no idea of they’re male or female. They’re an elf who knows practically everything in the entire world. Given how they are described, I feel like they are older than Frieren. I honestly can’t wait to meet this character. It’s not often you see an elf much older than Frieren; Kraft is older than her, but Serie feels like prehistoric.
I know that it’s already been three episodes since the first selection has started. I do wonder how many more episodes it’ll take. Hopefully, it won’t drag out too much. I’m mostly anticipating the clash between the two senior citizens next episode. The showdown of the century! What are your thoughts on this episode?

The story in the present is finally moving forward
We watched 2 more episodes. When it started my mom went "she's so mean/such an asshole" and i immediately jumped in "she doesn't mean wrong by that". "You defended her right away", replied my mom, and right after she said that, in the anime they said how much Frieren has changed... I felt like I won the non existent argument heh...
Today it felt weird for me, then good then bad and now we are here. And in that bad was my post, wondering if I'm unapproachable or it's because I'm in my own bubble.... And then I look at this girl... She isn't unapproachable, she's silly... But she comes off as cold, she doesn't understand what humans feel. She enjoyed bringing happiness to her friends, and at the end of it she regrets not getting to know them better... She's not a bad person...
That made me think of some things I've been told... "Seari you are so weird" "you always look so relaxed, how do you do it?" I think were some that stuck with me... And then I remembered when I talked with.... I'm not sure who it was with, but how I pictured myself alone in the mall, with my earbuds and no one bothering me, no one getting close to me, as if I was invisible, as if I was in a small bubble where nothing gets out and nothing comes in...
I guess is still that feeling... I feel happy being able to talk to people, and I feel happy interacting, but I feel like I need to do more, like I'm doing something wrong or missing something... I feel... Who knows... School don't teach you this stuff
But... She feels happy... She has her little collection and ends up dragging others on her way, they enjoy the adventure, and sometimes enjoy whatever magic she learnt too... I wonder if that's what we are doing now
I guess me feeling like I'm annoying is one of those being unable to truly put myself in others shoes moment... I mean if I was annoying people would go away... I just am on my little bubble... And don't know how to get out... And while it might expand a bit, being inside of it still makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong
When Stark said "I haven't done anything", I felt it.... The way others treat you and you feeling like you don't deserve it, and the way he says he would fight it but probably run away.... And Fern told him he wouldn't... And then he actually didn't and then he actually killed it! It... It felt close to home....
The times people have thanked me while I feel I've done nothing are unmeasurable... But... I guess bringing people comfort, even when not fixing the problem, is really good for them, isn't it? That's what he did... He even said how before that the village looked gloomy, and now we saw it happy and full of life.... He didn't fix the problem, but even so, he helped them so much...
I'm getting really sleepy... I'll check the notifications and then might take a nap heh
I didn't take notes while watching it this time, that's why it turned like this, sorry hahahaha anyways I don't really expect people to be reading this, it's more of a personal project.... But hey if someone is, hi, welcome to my mind

fondly thinking of a protagonist who is some sort of evil demonspawn but theyre designated as the hero somehow so they go around killing other monsters because its fun
demon who has been forcibly marked by the goddess and so he's Compelled to fight other evil. hilarious
first companion is a priest who broke their vow or sinned majorly that was told by the goddess that if they helped the hero, they would be forgiven. and they see the hero and are like Genuinely what the fuck
hmm maybe to avoid the issue of "are demons people too" because i always end up thinking about it. main source of evil in this world is a kind of miasma that possesses things and makes them into demons, so we can bypass the whole "race of beings that is born evil" thing. because i only like the way frieren does it and dont know if i could replicate that well. so miasma creates weird evil beings, and it cursed our protagonist when he was a baby, so hes been like this his whole life. and then he just got so powerful over the years that he became a threat to the world and the goddess forced him into the role of the hero. i think the miasma comes from some super ancient evil thing that's deep inside the earth
