2 episodes in and my favorite show of the new anime season is Girls Band Cry.

Unfortunately it's not licensed on any English streaming platforms... but a proper fansub group (SobsPlease) picked up the series and they're doing excellent work. Highly recommended you check out their releases.

The lead seiyuu are all legit musicians who perform as the band Togenashi Togeari, the premise is refreshingly grounded, and the 3D animation pops off when it counts -- a lot of expressiveness in funny/emotional scenes and the song performances are really well directed and super accurate.

Also, casual gay rep in the first episode (Momoka is talking about her roommate here). So, rad.

God, I can't stop watching the "Voiceless Fish" scene from episode 3 and the music videos for "Bleeding Hearts" and "Nameless Name."

Like damn, that might be some of the best looking CG animation for music videos I've ever seen. Every member has so much amazing subtle animation to them but like Nina is so mesmerizing to watch sing. The way she just goes from high energy bopping to beat to a more low energy pacing back and forth and then straight back to even higher energy kicking around on stage? The way she goes from swinging her free hand wildly to the beat before going back to gripping her mic with both hands? The way they show her resting during the instrumentals but still swaying along to the rest of the band? It feels like you're in the audience watching a live performance. Legit can't wait for the anime to get to more performances cause I need more of this.

(Also I highly recommend checking out all of Togenashi Togeari's other music videos. They're all animated by completely different artists and aren't related to the anime but they're all A+ bangers. I really love "Ideal Paradox", "Hurtful & Painful" and "Piercing the dawn of time" the most)

I posted this elsewhere as well but the way they use the motion of subarus hand to 'hoist' nina up into the air without actually saying that she jumped AND hit it on the beat is so absolutely genius I fucking love the direction they do on the insert songs

The Japanese name for leaf-mining beetles (subfamily Hispinae) is "spiny leaf-beetles" (toge hamushi), but they used to have the alternate name "spiny-spiny" (togetoge). A few species of leaf-mining beetles have no spines, leading to the amusing name of "spineless spiny-spiny" (although the preferred term is hosohirata hamushi, "thin flat leaf-beetle") ...and sure enough, a species of hosohirata hamushi with spines was recently discovered in Southeast Asia, and promptly nicknamed the "spined spineless spiny-spiny" (togeari togenashi togetoge).
