“looks like time doesn’t pass here.”
a jujutsu master smirked, but an eerie silence engulfed him.
it was a silence that went on for too long.  gojo sighs, feeling stupid for expecting some sort of response.
“crap…i messed up.  this could be trouble.”
the stillness only reaffirmed the calamity that gojo was in.
he frowned.
gojo crossed his arms over his chest, reclining against the pile of skulls.
he scoffs.
“whatever.  it’ll be fine.”
even in a desperate situation, he manages to crack out a smile.
“i have faith…in everyone.”
gojo is able to hold his smile for a few beats.
but who knew that in this minute, in this second, in this beat of time…his enemy was not the cursed user who sealed him here–rather, the unsettling tranquility that dominated him in every aspect.
and for the first time in a long time, his lip begins to quiver.  his mouth salivates with the bitter taste of despair and regret.  he attempts to push such flavors down by swallowing.
he isn’t successful.
the tears that have been held back through every heartbreak were finally released.  years and years of worry and concern poured down gojo’s face.  flashing memories of every beautiful moment in his life made their mark on his wounded soul, and gojo’s chest heaved with hopelessness.
as powerful as gojo was in jujutsu, there was nothing he could do that would stop the waterfall of tears.  the humanity in his blood, bred to be so thick and durable over time, suddenly found itself crumbling down within seconds.
hands turned into fists hit the surface beneath him, an attempt to break free.  the smack against the surface constantly echoed, as if laughing at gojo’s intentions.  the attempt was worthless, he knew.  but as he screamed and cried, releasing his sorrowful anger through punches was the only thing he knew he could do now.
gojo takes his time, almost feeling like an eternity.
time, in a way, was vividly absent and ever-so-present here.
once he thinks he has recovered, the man stares ahead.
a skull stares back at him.
with dry tears on his face, he sniffles.  he shakes his head, bringing his hands to his face.
“why?”  he asked himself, furiously rubbing his eyes.  “out of all things, why are you on my mind?”

YEARS AGO…
a sunny sky.  a comforting wind.  colorful leaves danced in the air, and gojo watched them intently.
he sat alone in a classroom, his head facing towards an open window.
gojo always liked to observe nature, a hobby he picked up from geto.  although geto was more of a people-watcher.
but geto was gone now.
nonetheless, today was graduation day.  he should happy.
but in all honesty, it just felt like another day to him.  it was most likely he would take a temporary break from the school after graduation, then come back right back.
throughout the years here as a student, gojo realized that the regulations of the jujutsu world needed to be changed.  he saw how the out-dated rules affected the lives of young sorcerers.  perhaps he had been ignorant about it when he first started, but now, it deeply annoyed him.  he wanted the cycle of change to start now, even if he wasn’t the one to do so in the end.
he thinks this and more as he observes the whistling trees.
suddenly, the atmosphere changes.  his heart skips a beat.
before you even open the door, he already knows it’s you.
the sorcerer, however, tries to keep his cool.  he continues to look out the window.
you open the door and whistle a familiar tune.  “i knew i’d find you in here.”
gojo glances back at your way.  a genuine smile appears on his face, and he shrugs.  “you know how much i loved this classroom…i just can’t seem to let it go.”
“you say that as if you didn’t skip half the time.”
gojo displays a dramatic stab to the heart.  “how dare you accuse me of such a thing!”
you try to hide a smile, but fail.
you displayed the same smile that made him fall in love with you.  a facial expression that was so beautiful, so pure, so…gojo couldn’t even begin to describe it.
you approach, and sit down at an empty desk next to him.  “are you…gonna go out there? they’re taking the class picture soon.”
gojo sighs, and looks at the floor for just a moment.  “just so they can put it on the wall and then forget about us?  i’d rather not.”
you frown.  “regardless of what they do with it, it’s the last memory of all of us together.  don’t you want that?”
“no, i don’t.  i want–”
gojo stops himself.  the man suddenly finds himself staring into your eyes, and they shine beautifully.
he had to refrain himself from finishing the sentence, because he was going to say that all he ever wanted was you.  only you.  he didn’t want to be reminded of the bittersweet memories of his colleagues and instructors through a photograph.  the only thing he wanted to remember were the gratifying moments of just the two of you, the ones where he made you laugh and the ones where you made him feel like the strongest man alive.
gojo has to look away from you, otherwise he would declare his love right here and now.  but it would be unfair to you.
if you weren’t leaving the country, maybe he would’ve said it.
but fate had other plans for you.
when you first started at jujutsu tech, the first years consisted of four students.  shoko, geto, satoru…and you.  the four of you bonded quickly and had your adventures, becoming some of the best student sorcerers within japan.
but as you know, time doesn’t only heal, it reveals.
after the mission that involved the death of riko, along with geto going dark, everything changed.  and even though satoru was in love with you since the moment that he met you [while you also felt the same way], it was difficult to talk about such emotions when other things were much more important in the moment.
the remaining three of you were able to get through it, however.  shoko decided to specialize in medicine since she was able to use her reversed curse technique to heal others.  you had asked gojo what he wanted to do, but the man simply shrugged.
as for you…you always wanted to help people.  you never even realized you had supernatural abilities until a teacher from jujutsu tech reached out to you.  at that time, you had seen all the evils of the world.  but if you could help with just a small portion of that, even if it was exorcizing things that most humans couldn’t see…then you were doing something right.
by the end of today, the three of you would be deemed grade one sorcerers.  the more experience you got in the future, and the chances of you three becoming a special grade sorcerer would be just within reach.
that was your goal.  thus, you tried to excel at everything you did.  and your efforts did bear fruit, because you were offered an internship to follow a special grade sorcerer in europe, immediately after graduation.  you’d be a fool not to say no.
in short, gojo could tell you that he loves you.  but in a world where curses would continue to be born, your main priority [and ultimately his] was to exorcize them each and every one of them.  it would be selfish of him to tell you such things and confine you here.
but god, did he love you.  his heart ached with sorrow simply at the thought of you leaving, so how would he deal with your absence?  he didn’t even want to think about it.
“what do you want, satoru?”
your sweet voice brought him out of his melancholic trance.  he gazes back at you, and notices that your face is much, much closer.
his body naturally responds, leaning forward.  your immense desire for a single kiss from gojo overrides your subconscious, and you sway towards him.
so close, yet so far.
the two of you are suddenly startled when the classroom slides open, an ecstatic shoko jumping into the room.
the two of you manage to pull away in time, but the rosy cheeks remain on the two of you.
“there you are!”  she exclaims, walking in and sitting on top of the desk in which you sat.  “i was looking for you guys everywhere.  principal yaga sent me to find y’all for the class picture.”
the woman pokes her tongue out.  “the faster we take the picture, then we can go out to celebrate together one last time.  so let’s go!”
shoko grabbed your hand and pulls you up, before getting up from the desk and walking away.  you straggle behind, looking back at satoru.
the man met your gaze.  they gleamed with such hope and heartbreak.  gojo tears away from your eyes, looking back outside once more.
that was the last time you two ever saw each other.

NOVEMBER 1ST, 2018 -  ST. MALO, FRANCE
“bonjour à nos téléspectateurs, nous avons des nouvelles de dernière heure en ce moment…”
the television played as background music in the office, while you typed away on the computer.  you were completing a report about the recent curse you just exorcized in paris, france.  it was small fry compared to other cases, but enzo [the sorcerer who gave you the internship ten years ago, and also your boss] preferred documentation when you dealt with a curse.
your partner, destin, was writing a supplement to your report at a desk right next to you.
you were now a special grade sorcerer, and had been for several years.  during that time, you traveled around europe [and other countries every once in a while] to exorcize curses.  however, you haven’t gone back to japan since you graduated.
on the bright side, you were doing what you had always hoped to do.  after you eliminated each curse, the gratitude from people’s faces was certainly something that warmed your heart.
although, their gratitude alone could not fill your heart.  there was only one person who was capable of that, and you thought of him everyday.
as you were reading through your narrative, the news on the television seemed to grow louder.
“des témoins rapportent qu'une sorte de barrière ne leur permet pas de pénétrer dans le territoire de shibuya au japon, et déclarent que personne de l'intérieur n'est sorti. la police n'est pas sûre de sa cause–”
you turn around quickly, wanting to make sure you heard the anchor correctly.  on the screen, the title card at the bottom said “BREAKING NEWS: SHIBUYA, DERNIÈRES NOUVELLES:  SHIBUYA”.  alongside the anchor was camera footage of downtown shibuya, where citizens seemed to be huddled near an invisible line.
you had startled destin, and the man turned around to see what caught your attention.
the two of you recognized the curtain immediately.  while most humans couldn’t see it, the both of you knew that someone had put a veil over this part of shibuya.
but you didn’t know why.
“that’s not good,” destin says, pulling out his phone.  the two of you connected so well that he already knew what was on your mind.  your eyes stayed glued to the screen as you hear him dial away.
“hé enzo, c'est le destin.  avez-vous entendu les nouvelles de shibuya?”
the man stays quiet for a few moments, and you can hear enzo chatting on the other side.  eventually, destin says, “d'accord. c'est tout ce que j'avais besoin de savoir. merci.”
the camera on the screen focuses on witnesses, and some exterior shots of the city are taken.
“japan sorcerers did ask for reinforcements but…we’re too far away.”
your heart drops, and you look at your partner.
destin is unable to meet your sorrowful eyes, so he looks away.
“however enzo…” destin begins to say, “would understand if you went there right away.”
you didn't have to think it over twice.  shibuya was in trouble.  how could you call yourself a sorcerer if you couldn’t even help the people near your home?  while you didn’t know what kind of curse was terrorizing japan, you had to do something.  and even if the battle was over once you landed, you could stick around and help with the investigation.
your heart suddenly begins to ache as questions come into your mind.
did they send jujutsu tech special grade sorcerers?  of course they did.  but this is a big deal, the special grade sorcerers, as talented as they are, couldn’t be enough.  oh god, did they send first years?  did they send kyoto tech too?
is satoru there?
as you gathered all your things to leave the office, destin tells you, “i checked some flights.  there is a plane leaving in one hour from here to tokyo haneda.  go home and pack the essentials.  i’ll get a taxi to arrive at your apartment and take you to the airport.  make sure to take your badge for priority landing and government access into the country.”
by the time he finishes his planning, you’re about to step outside the office.  your partner hugs you, and says, “be safe, y/n.  call enzo or myself as soon as you can.”
“i will.  thanks, destin.”  you reply, letting go and walking out of the office.
you had not spoken with gojo since the day you graduated.  but your eyes nearly welled up in tears at the thought of him.  how could you be so stupid to leave him?  how egotistical were you to put yourself first over him?  you were so ashamed to finally realize that, especially after all the years.
it wasn’t the fact that you thought he couldn’t handle himself, it was the fact that he could be in danger and not even realize it.
seeing satoru would be priority after solving the curse in japan.  while your heart was filled with hope and anxiety, the travel towards japan felt incredibly long.  it was almost if…time didn’t pass.
