Since high school I’ve always carried a camera with me, and in 1973 as I walked to class @ucsc I saw Angela Davis walking nearby. Of course I asked if I might make a photograph of her, and she was very patient with a young, naïve, entitled, white hippy kid. I love the entire process involved in making photographs, even spotting, and especially sending a print off to a new home @sfplbookarts @sfpubliclibrary There are some of my photographs that I think should be part of an historical collection, and since I’m partial to libraries, the San Francisco Main Library has kindly accepted a few of my prints. It doesn’t seem possible that this image was made nearly 50 years ago. Today marks Professor Davis’ 79th birthday. One of my favorite memories is looking up Ansel Adams in the phone book or calling “information” at 411 and making an appointment to visit him at his home. I was an hour late, Virginia was Not Amused, but Ansel was forgiving and generous. The reason I was late was I had stopped to visit Wynn Bullock on my drive down from UCSC, and I showed him my photos and made a few portraits of him. I haven’t looked at the photos I made in decades as they were 35mm, and it is only because of staying home more during our recent years of plague, that I started looking back at the film. Yesterday I printed the portrait of Wynn and it brought back my memory of how kind two giants were to a young scruffy hippie kid who wanted to learn how to make better photos. I also try to be better about being on time for my appointments. I was lucky growing up with my maternal grandparents. They lived across the street from a young doctor and his oldest son became my best friend in elementary school. Instead of going to the Navy Hospital when I needed a ‘shot’ I just had to cross the street. I lived with my maternal grandparents from the age of three. My mother remarried and had another family and I would visit her and my half brothers and sisters briefly when I came back to San Diego on breaks from college in the early ‘70’s. As they say “it’s complicated.” Throughout everything, I made photographs. After I married @vickiknits I brought her to meet my mother. The kids had moved out by then, but my mother shared her stories with Vicki. I grew up with my maternal grandparents, and my grandmother always supported my efforts in making photographs. When I was in high school she took me to the hobby shop at the Naval Training Center where I learned to process film and print in the darkroom with the sailors, while she made ceramic figures for my grandfather’s garden. I worked after school at Cal Stores (which was a precursor to Target) to earn the money to buy my first camera at the Navy Exchange; a Yashica TL Super. My first intentional photographs were of my grandparents, and as I made this photo of my grandmother, reading the morning paper with my dog Tippy, I can hear her saying “oh, you don’t want to make a photo now…?” My grandmother’s father was a coal miner and she was born at home on Trafalgar Terrace, Ystrad, in the Rhondda Valley, Wales, 100 years ago today. It’s strange to look at a piece of film, an image between other familiar images, and not know anything about who the people are and what the actual experience was. Looking at the film from my hitchhiking trip to British Columbia in 1974 I know I made this photograph, and realize I must have been driving. I made photographs of all the people who picked me up; I wish I had written down who they were, and something about the time we were in a car together. Who is the woman in the back seat? In the early 1970’s when I had a break from college, I would hitch-hike from @ucsc to British Columbia to visit my best friend’s sister Barbie and her husband Mark. To avoid the draft, they had moved to an island between Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland. Visiting over Spring break in 1973 and August 1974, I thought it was paradise, and looking back on the photographs I made, I’m not surprised how many of the images were of the people I met, and so few of the country. There are a few stories I would share in the past, and request friends not to repeat them in front of my kids. I realized this morning these stories now have to be framed appropriately for my grandchildren. In the early 1970’s when I had a break from college, I would hitch-hike from @ucsc to British Columbia to visit my best friend’s sister Barbie and her husband Mark. To avoid the draft, they had moved to an island between Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland. Visiting over Spring break in 1973 and August 1974, I thought it was paradise, and looking back on the photographs I made, I’m not surprised how many of the images were of the people I met, and so few of the country. I was very lucky in my experiences, and wonder if it would be possible/safe to hitch-hike anywhere in the world now. Yesterday going through a box of film, my grandmother was in my thoughts and when I first looked at this image my heart stopped: did I make my grandmother cry? I know I did. Being young, a little naive, too privileged, there was the time she asked as I put my camera over my shoulder, heading for the door: “where are you going now?” and without thinking I replied “There’s a Nazi rally in the park, so I’m going to make photographs of them.” I was so matter of fact and as she burst into tears, I told her I would be OK, and not to worry. I’m sure I didn’t put her at ease when I hitchhiked across the country one summer, or the time just out of college I hitched through Mexico. My grandfather’s Navy pension was $400 a month, so we didn’t have extras, but I do acknowledge I was raised with privileges and a confidence that I’m sure my grandmother instilled in me. I was taught by her that everyone who lives on this planet is family, and I’ve tried to be as good as I can be, with her in mind. And then wish I could tell her I didn’t mean to make her cry.
