John 1:20
this started as a much bigger idea but three days of sketching in i realized my brain-eyes were bigger than my hand-stomach could manage. i probably still couldve taken it further than i did but i think im still happy with what ive got for two and a half weeks worth of working on it.
also full disclosure the shot of johns politician puppet is almost entirely lifted from a photo of a white house meeting room (mirrored and with some people left out) and i straight up traced the city of melbourne from a stock photo because at that point i was afraid that if i didn't take some pretty extreme shortcuts id never get past it and id lose all my work up to that point. the original intent was for both images to show up for a second or less in an amv or an animatic or whatever were calling them these days so it would probably have felt like less of a big deal. so like, sorry to the original photographers for jacking your shit but also thank you for your service o7

We all knew that John was awful, but the thing that perhaps struck me as the most appalling sick shit on top of all the other appalling sick shit he's done is this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the beginning I was slightly confused about why John consistently used A—, M— etc throughout the memories we see instead of the lyctors' full names, like we know who these people are, but I also thought okay, well they were all known to sign just their initials and use them as callsigns all the time, whatever right?
But when he talks about Ulysses and Titania he uses their full names in every instance except in this one, when he says U— and T— were their old names, before he renamed them to his liking, because he's a controlling deranged bastard like that.
And then it just hits you.
He's not using the lyctors' full names because those are their old names too. He has RENAMED his dead best friends who died protecting him. Every single one of them. They weren't around to say yes or no.

OG Lyctors and Cavaliers -
So, now we "know" that a lyctor (without wanting and unaware) takes something something from their cavalier's soul, so please help me with this TLT fandom;
G1deon - Was it Pyrrha´s attraction that drove him to Wake?
Cyrus - Valancy´s clothes on him or around him *
I am sure there is something already said/posted about Cassy and Nigella.
Cytherea - Loveday´s blue eyes?
But MERCY? - Big mystery. - Devotion to John? Just like the other lyctors (just for a few centuries)
Augustine?¿Ulysess?
HELP!!!!! I want to know, I need to know.

Musings about this reblog by @turtletotem about the original Lyctors experimenting with souls to make Teacher and the other priests
Maybe the reason they were experimenting with cramming more souls into a body is because they had so many resurrectable souls whose bodies were vaporized in the various nuclear blasts. Maybe, in their own way, they wanted to help—to bring these people back. But they had no bodies to reanimate, so they experimented with having them share.
This gave me a thought: ok but is this where Ulysses and Titania came from?
Because. They were one of the original Lyctor/cavalier pairs after the Resurrection. But before the extinction event, they were already dead. They were part of John’s cryo project, that went on for a while before getting shut down over a year before The End, so they must have been dead for about 5 years. Definitely dead for longer than John had his powers, absolutely dead long before he figured out how to sense souls. So where did their souls come from? I’ve been wondering about this for a while but. You’re right that they may have been the receptacle of any “extra souls” John had on hand.
This also could play a part in how many people died the day of the nukes vs. how few were actually brought back in the Resurrection. John didn’t bring back all of them (not even most of them) and didn’t wake up all of those, but would he have been able to recompose bodies that had been utterly destroyed by nuclear bombs? Do his powers work on an atomic scale? Or maybe they do, and he could have, but it was too much of a power drain to do for millions or people, or maybe he tried to bring back the Melbourne train conductors and it went terribly wrong so he just quit after that.

There’s something extra fucked up about Ulysses and Titania going through the lyctor process, because those were supposed to be John’s darling children, the first ones he resurrected who he had a special attachment to, and then he just made one of them murder and consume the other

U and T were "kids." The entire fourth house was, and has always been, dead kids and soon to be dead kids, controlled by a monster

So we know that TM uses names a foreshadowing of characters eventual fates and I’ve seen some neat analyses of potential ways those could play out (Ulysses=Odysseus=coming back after a long journey). But after reading Nona and having the confirmation that Jod literally renamed all of his friends, I also have to wonder what those names say about how he thinks of them.

Ulysses and Titania
Probably the most important take-away from these books is that Tamsyn doesn’t give us information if it doesn’t matter, and she doesn’t name characters for no reason.
By now, we’re all aware that Ulysses is a translation of Odysseus. I’ve seen a LOT of great speculation for what this could mean for the plot and I love it, but I’m here to talk about Titania for a minute, who is probably the character we know the least about.
To start, it’s stated point blank in the books that she was named for the character in Shakespeare’s midsummer. I’m far from a literary expert and I’ve never read the play, but my understanding is that Titania’s character has a spell put on her that makes her fall in love with some ugly dude. Nothing from this feels TLT-relevant to me. BUT: Titania’s story is regarded to be an inverse retelling of Circe. As in Circe, from the Odyssey.
(Enjoy this painting of Circe offering the cup to Ulysses)
Tumblr media
It’s been a decade+ since I halfway read the odyssey in high school, but to sum up what I know: Circe was the one who turned the whole gang into swine. Turning anyone who annoyed her into animals was her whole thing. But then some things happen and long story short, she has three of Odysseus’ children. Classic enemies to lovers? Anyway. This is how Titania and Ulysses’ names are related.
Now as far as what this means for their characters, it’s going to be a LOT of speculation. And I’m honestly still chewing on it. Because, again, we know next to nothing about them beyond John referring to them as kids and that Ulysses loved to party.
My biggest question is: if all the other necro+cav pairs from the resurrection gang had some sort of a strong bond that seems connected to their pre-res life, and that bond is INCREDIBLY important to the lyctor process (which I’m still convinced will come back to bite ianthe, but that’s another post for another day), and T— and U— more than likely had no bond before they died (if their original souls even ended up in the correct bodies), how does that complicate things?
If Titania is meant to be an inverse telling of Circe’s story, does that mean that she and Ulysses could have had a falling out? They WERE just kids, and loved to have fun. I have a gut feeling they had some sort of passionate teenage/early adult romance that crashed and burned, the way young people tend to do.
Again, and I cannot overstate this enough, this is HEAVY speculation for one of the series’ least known characters. It could be complete bullshit. But I really think there’s something there with the Titania= inverse Circe connection. I’d absolutely love to hear other opinions from people more familiar with mythology/the odyssey/U&T/whatever.

after reading the description of the rooms ianthe is staying in on the mithraem and then that harrow’s were empty i was like- wait did they put her in the ninth house rooms? cause i remembered that anastasia never became a lyctor
then i went to the dramatis personae and proceeded to figure out which house each necro/cav pair founded. some were pretty simple
quinque- five
oct- eight
dve- that one gave me pause. until my friend looked it up and was like. it’s slavic. and i facepalmed. dva is two in russian but dve is a conjugated form used to refer to things, so i didn’t even recognize it
shodash- from sanskrit for sixteen. also we already knew from nona that cassiopeia was sixth
trinit- three (like yeah what i remember about the vibes of cyrus and valancy, they would have painted nudes of themselves. very third)
tetra- this one stumped me for a bit. cause that’s also a root for three. until my friend pointed out that it’s in three dimensions. a pyramid. which has four sides. i stand corrected it does mean four. no idea why i associated it with three so definitively
also this seems to be the only name that’s rooted more in math/geometry instead of language/culture, fitting since ulysses and titania were created by john even more so than the others (something something they didn’t have as much dimension as the others cause at least the others were based on real people john knew before he fucked everything up)
heptane- i could remember from somewhere that hept meant seven
novenary- we’ve heard so many ninth names at this point that even without the root we’d be able to recognize that as ninth
and since we know that god renamed them all after resurrecting them and wiping their memories, i assume he did this all on purpose. did they guess? what did they think about being named arbitrary numbers that didn’t even have to do with their order of ascension? or were they even able to think about it? did they just think it was normal? or some big coincidence?
“i understand the houses have crystallized into… types” do you think that happened as a result of what john remade the lyctors into? did their personalities automatically carry over when he resurrected them or did when he reworked their memories he had to remember enough about them and just didn’t, thus starting the archetypes?
