I watched water rise up from the sewers the colour of dead ink, half-concealed in a shadow with Ajun.
“I said run,” Riet said, shoving my brother behind him with a speed he was barely prepared for.
My brother said something in his soft voice I couldn’t hear, and Riet swore loudly. The air smelled vile, enough that I almost gagged.
My brother staggered visibly and then straightened.
Riet let out a noise as my brother pushed past him toward - a figure. A humanoid figure shaped from shadow and sewer both. I knew it was not my father, but I also felt that same feeling of growing dread even from thirty paces back.
Ajun was moving and I was a mere step behind. Riet spun to warn, looking confused at our appearance, waving a hand toward the water.
“Be still,” Riet said, and the pipes around us were silent as his will touched the filth in the water. Riet wobbled on his feet, gasping a little, but the words slowed us as well, like an unseen blow into our bodies.
I made my blade of shadow without thinking, and whatever Riet was doing broke apart as he yelped at seeing it.
The water-figure moved closer, and my brother raised his left hand.
My ears popped. Metal groaned around us, and Riet spun back to see my brother’s hand spread wide, and the figure in front of them scream.
It was a sound I have seldom heard since, and never wish to hear again. Too high to be wholly human, too wild to be anything tamed. And too angry to be anything other than power thwarted when it thought itself beyond such things.

Ed note: Since Tumblr requires that you be “logged in” to view blogs, I need an alternative as that doesn’t work for me. I need a place where the public is free to browse my archive and view images without being forced to hand over their ID to #Oath.

The gods watch over us from the skies. That is a saying in the land of the three rivers, and it was as true then as it is now. The gods watch over us, but they are not always kind. There are other things they watch over as well. It is said by the Scholars that we only had freedom because the gods did not watch us all the time. And if that was true of people, surely it was of other things as well?
