I am reading the novel Killer Angels by Micheal Shaara based on the Battle of Gettysburg and it is soooo good. It is historical fiction that strives to be as accurate as possible. The chapters are from different significant people's perspectives.
I've read the first three sections plus a little bit more so far!
Okokok I love it how this book focuses on the people rather than just the battle it portrays. The inner monologues are golden. I LOVE getting the inner feelings of historical figures, it's like reading letters in the form of a novel. Chamberlain and Longstreet's conflicting feelings really illustrate historical views and how people dealt with them.
It is a crime that Fremantle has only one chapter because half of it is like "I'm Bri'ish and drink tea and am fancy" and it's so fun to read. Longstreet and he kinda have a friendship and it's honestly so sweet. They are each other's comfort person.
Joshua and Tom's relationship as brothers is so fun, honestly a good choice of people to focus on. Their relationship reminds me of the meme with the speech bubbles where a person is having some sort of crisis and the other is singing Reeces Puffs (Tom is singing Reeces Puffs).
There is a lot of social history and culture of the era in the book. It is really rewarding to know some of the history. There are historical references in the book that have me going wild. This book gives such a realistic feeling. Of course there is a lot of general stuff, but many small specifics, too, that are easy to miss if you aren't well versed in Civil War history. I really like that the author makes sure to give a background on the most important historical figures in the foreward.
Though it's a war novel like All Quiet on the Western Front, it is much les depressing and I really enjoy the perspectives and characters in it!
I cannot recommend this book enough. Even if you aren't a huge Civil War fan but just like history, I recommend it! AND the movie Gettysburg is based on it. It is a treat to have a good book and a good movie (the book is better though because of inner dialogue).
If you are not convinced yet, there is dialogue about something like a 19th century version of kissing the homies goodnight lol
Tumblr media
Ok my happy rant is over. Thank you for indulging me XD
I will probably post again when I finish it hehe

#OTD in 1876 – The ship Catalpa arrives in the U.S. with Irish Fenian prisoners rescued from Australia.
#OTD in 1876 – The ship Catalpa arrives in the U.S. with Irish Fenian prisoners rescued from Australia.
The “Fremantle Six” were Irish political prisoners who made an audacious escape from the notorious British prison in West Australia aboard the U.S. whaling ship “Catalpa” in 1876. Captain Anthony and the Catalpa arrive at Rockingham beach near Fremantle to rendezvous with the escaped prisoners; after a fierce confrontation with the Georgette, an armed British steamer, the Catalpa and the…

HMS Surprise
Even though she is a great heroine in the novels of Patrick O'Brian, there was actually a frigate with this name. She was designed by Pierre-Alexandre Forfait as a corvette and launched on 16 January 1794 as Unité.
Tumblr media
The Toulon Blockade - The newly-captured HMS Surprise (ex l’Unité) reporting to HMS Victory for orders. Sunset, 19th June 1796, by Geoff Hunt (x)
On 20 March 1794, the 41-year-old lieutenant de vaisseau Jean le Drézénec, who had joined the naval service shortly after the Revolution from the merchant service, took command of the Unité. He supervised the ship's equipment and found that the long guns were too large to be easily reloaded and the lower sails were also too large. He informed the authorities, who told him to stop equipping the ship as a major naval operation was imminent. Shortly afterwards, Unité took part in the Battle of the Glorious First of June, escorting the sunken Révolutionnaire, which was being towed by the Audacieux.
Tumblr media
Plan of the Surprise/ Unité (x)
In June 1794, Unité finished repairs at Saint-Malo and Brest on the damage she had sustained in the battle. In the months that followed, she escorted merchant ships along the French coasts. On 28 September, together with the corvette Bergere and under the command of Lieutenant de Vaisseau Gouley, the two ships left Brest to sail north-west between Ireland and the islands of the Hebrides and St Kilda to intercept enemy merchant ships. On 17 October, the ships captured the merchant ship Dianne. The next day the weather deteriorated and the two ships were separated. Unwilling or unable to continue the mission alone, the Unité searched in vain for the Bergere for sixteen days before returning to Brest on 1 November.  After repairs, the Unité was ordered to the Mediterranean fleet at Toulon, where she arrived in March 1795. She spent the rest of the year either blockading in port or as a courier ship. In April 1796 she was ordered to North Africa on one such courier service, bringing personnel and news to the port of Bône. Le Drézénec, who had been promoted to Capitaine de Frégate shortly before, was suffering from smallpox at the time and was not fit for service. Therefore, their first lieutenant, Le Breton, took command of the Unité.
Captain Thomas Fremantle, commanding the frigate HMS Inconstant, had heard that a French frigate was at Bône and sailed to intercept it. When the Unité arrived on the afternoon of 20 April 1796, the watch on board the Unité identified the Inconstant as a neutral ship and Le Breton did not release the ship for action. About an hour later, the Inconstant sailed alongside, boarded and captured Unité unharmed. She was renamed HMS Surprise and commissioned as a 28-gun frigate. In 1797 the ship was stationed in Jamaica and returned to the shipyard at Plymouth in January 1798. There the armament was changed to 24 32-pdr. carronades, 10 18-pdr. carronades and 2 long 4-pdr. guns; the hull was plated with copper.

HMS Hermione being cut out of Puerto Cabello by boats from HMS Surprise (on the right), by Nicholas Pocock, late 18th century (x)
HMS Surprise gained fame for the recapture of HMS Hermione. The crew of the Hermione had mutinied and retreated with the ship to the Spanish port of Puerto Cabello. The captain of the Surprise led a privateer crew into the harbour on boats and, in a rather bloody raid, abducted the Hermione and the remaining crew under fire from the Spanish fort.
She had no more service time after that and so she was decommissioned in February 1802 and was broken up.

Opinion things about teams:
Adelaide - I hate the bogan song and the accents in it and the clear lie because there’s clearly anything but admiration for them of the nation, we all hate them and they suck and I don’t like a thing other than the navy blue part of their jumper and Josh Rashelly. Also I’m beyond terrified of their fans.
Brisbane - I do like Josh Dunkley, i’m partial with their song but it’s too French for me, also the Gabba was alright but like being at a ground from before my time tbh, concrete jungle. Don’t really care about them they’re probably the better of the interstate teams.
Carlton - what’s NOT to like? Besides Koutafides and Kristou. And 2019 32 and Dale Thomas. They suck
Collingwood - I really enjoy watching this club and my 7 year old LOVES them and Darcy and Pat and everyone but I hate their boys club and racist culture, their stupidity and this incessant need to keep De Goey. And I hate what they did to the Brown brothers, Bianco, Grundy, Ginnivan etc. also Port look better in the prison jumper x. Good song tho, maybe change the word cakewalk.
Essednon - solid song, easy to remember but I hate how my autocorrect always spells Essendon wrong lol. Nice jumper, nice colours, but hated the drug saga and James Hird and how much of a fake he is. Ruined Bombed Thompson who was in a way a favourite of mine and @fazcinatingblog ‘s. Not bad.
Fremantle - I like the purple. It ends there. The song is metal, the longer version was good but some of the lyrics are questionable tbh. Also always wanted to see a game in Perth.
Geelong - my eldest child goes for them and passionately loves them, and my older brother who died also loved them passionately. I lived in Geelong, hate the area and the fans but otherwise I’d call Geelong my third team tbh. I don’t mind them at all. Song is always hittin
Gold Coast - I do not like one thing.
GWS - as above. Plus their stadium is fucking stupid. Location wise and everything wise. I do like the song, it gets in my head. Carlton are the biggest and the bestttt
Hawks - Ginnivan lol he’s the only thing I like. My son likes them a lot! The song annoys me cause the only time I ever hear it is against one of MY teams :(
Melbourne - I like the song I like Petracca I like the colours but the royal blue and red guernsey gotta go. That’s the Dogs’ property. Also love that they smashed the dogs in the 2021 premiership and the dogs are so salty about it that they refuse to acknowledge it as a premiership.
Norf - yeah nice colours, nice song + the unofficial entry before the song that I sing and Laura looks at me like I’m crazy, some players are alright but I hate that when a good team plays Norf, it’s the slowest and longest game ever because Norf naturally drag you down to their level.
Port - WE GOT THE POWER TO WIN! POWER TO RULE! COME ON, PORT ADELAIDE AGGRESSION. WE GOT THE POWER FROM PORT, ITS MORE THAN A SPORT ITS THE TRUE PORT ADELAIDE TRADITION. WE NEVER STOP STOP STOP TILL WERE TOP TOP TOP there’s HISSSSSSTORY HERE IN THE MAKING. WE GOT THE POWER TO WIN, WE’LL NEVER GIVE IN TILL THE FLAG IS OURS FOR THE TAKING. POWER!!!! (Power is what I always sing at the end of baggers song lol) I love the song I hate the club and team and the dumb pear. How the hell are they a pear?
Richmond - I love the song and it ends there, also thanks for the win round 1 babes
Saints - idk I’m on the fence with them
Sydney - I do not like one thing about them
West Coast - ugly
Dogs - overrated

A Season of Hope
No St Kilda fan needs a lesson on disappointment. 56 years without a flag is a heck of a long time and sometimes it seems that the ‘you can’t swim at St Kilda because they only have one flag’ jokes will be around until the end of humanity.
An eight year span from 2004 to 2011, represents a very strong era in St Kilda folklore. An average ladder finish of 4th, making Preliminary Finals in 04, 05 and 08, whilst losing Grand Finals in 09 and 2010.
Apart from the flag in ‘66, the St Kilda team that went through Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon was perhaps the strongest St Kilda squad that has ever graced this earth.
This can make it even harder to swallow that this elusive second flag hasn’t been won yet. If that star-studded St Kilda team couldn’t get it done, maybe that’s the closest they will ever get.
St Kilda fans need fear not as the competition was much stronger than as it is now and a new era of talent is emerging.
The likes of Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Nick Riewoldt have been replaced by Jack Steele, Jack Sinclair, Jade Gresham and Max King.
Max King’s career progression is almost identical to that of Nick Riewoldt’s so far; first season a write off due to injury, a little over a goal a game the next year, then a significant increase. Nick Riewoldt also had the wobbles infront of goals at times. If King can fix that, then perhaps he could deliver St Kilda their next flag.
Tumblr media
King celebrates after crucial goal against Richmond in April
A strong core and some exciting youth has many licking their lips, hoping the likes of Marcus Windhager, Mitchito Owens and Nasiah Wanganeen Milera can deliver on the excitement they stirred in the hearts of Saints fans in 2022.
One of St Kilda’s biggest areas of concerns is leaking goals. Not to say their backline is weak, but the team defence is not where it should be.
Ross Lyon had St Kilda conceding the least goals of any team, with a defence first mentality.
If he is anything like he was at his first St Kilda stint and his run at Fremantle, then St Kilda fans should strap themselves in because the sky is the limit.

Former coach Ross Lyon awaits a call from St Kilda Saints after Brett Rattens sacking
He’s certainly not approached and he, like everyone else, is always eager to strike up a conversation. He loves St. Kilda… (But) unless there’s a particular show, he’s pretty happy where he is. Attorney John Gdansky Sources close to the saints said Sunday afternoon They will ramp up their search within days, wanting to have their new coach in place in “definitely” two weeks, suggesting they have their goal in mind, and a deal can be brokered sooner. The Saints publicly decline to discuss potential candidates, but former president Rod Butters – the man who hired Lyon in 2006 – has said there is no reason why the events of the past should shape how the club now views Lyon. “No doubt—different system, different time. We all go forward. I know Ross is the type who doesn’t stare into the (mirror) view. As Blighty (Malcolm Blight) once said to me: ‘Don’t stare in the rearview mirror, it’s over. You’re up to running toward…the car in front of you,” Patters said. Patris was president from 2001-2007, and oversaw the short appointment and departure of Malcolm Blitt in 2001, the appointment of Grant Thomas as Blitt’s successor in the same season, the dismissal of Thomas in 2006, and the appointment of Lyon, when he was junior coach. A committee headed by Robert Walls endorsed his request. loading “What I can say is that I have a lot of respect for Ross Leon, in terms of what he has achieved, the person he is, and his football IQ,” said Patrass. “He’s interesting to listen to. He was great to work with and he was a strong leader and a good guy. He had that quality that we’re here for one purpose, and let’s get it done.” As Batters recalls, that goal could have been “accomplished” in the 2010 Grand Final against Collingwood “but for an act of God, that ball was bouncing to the left when it should have bounced into Milne (Stephen Milne)’s hand.” Lyon also led the Dockers to the 2013 Grand Final, losing to Hawthorn, before being sacked in 2019. The Saints want their new coach to have a “cruel” edge, after they discovered “disturbing” results, according to president Andrew Passat, in their club review, which will soon release some details publicly. Lyon withdrew from the race for the Carlton vacancy last year, when the Blues decided to run a proper run, and was tied for Essendon’s last role, before once again declaring he would not undergo a full interview process. Brendon Goddard, a former Saint and Essendon captain, said Lyon would have been a perfect fit for the bombers — that job goes to Brad Scott. What is clear is that Lyon are known for their ruthless supremacy and will bring a solid defensive philosophy onto the pitch, even though the game has become more offensive since his final year with the Dockers. Ross Lyon wears purple Fremantle in 2016.attributed to him:Getty Images Lyon’s career record is 172 victories, 128 defeats and five draws in his tenure with Saints and Dockers. Alongside Lyon, Melbourne assistant Adam Ezy, former Essendon coach James Heard and Western Bulldogs mentor Luke Beveridge – the latter about to begin renegotiating the contract – have been linked with the Saints’ role. FREMANTLE’S Federal Hotel (pictured) was the scene of a gruesome double murder in 1927, when Lillian Martin and her three-year-old son Daniel (also pictured) were found dead in an upstairs bedroom. The Federal Hotel opened for business in 1887, and was described at the time as being “far in advance of anything so far erected in Western Australia and equal to the best in the sister colonies”. The hotel’s colourful history though is darkened by a violent double murder/suicide, which occurred on February 8, 1927. Separated from her husband, Lillian Martin and her lover, John ‘Jack’ Thomas, had booked into the Federal Hotel on February 7.
