howdy, howdy, howdy @a-mag-a-day and co. it's 148 time! That's lovely! :3
also uhm. 7de Laan (South African soap opera) spoilers ahead? apparently?
look idk what to do for a funny intro today
JONATHAN SIMS Rusty Quill presents: The Magnus Archives. Episode one hundred and forty-eight. Extended Surveillance.
For some reason, my brain immediatly went "the French magnus archives" and it would be like uh... cent et quarante-huit (?). I don't know why I wanted to translate it? Also, the most French I've done was like... grade 9 Canadian French which I've promptly forgotten. I don't know why I thought this.
Le Magnus (in a french accent) Archives? Look, I speak Afrikaans, but as someone who's learned it from 7de Laan and yk, just being in a family with one Afrkaaner who sometimes uses Afrikaans slang and words and cannot spell apple, so a lot of the Afrikaans I speak is just english words in an Afrikaans accent. I mean like that's basically what Afrikaans is so-
Y'all should watch 7de Laan, it's really fun. Idk what button they've discovered now, but I remember back when Mariaan killed... Ben I want to say, and they discovered the voice over button. And then there was the Orange is the New Black rip off season, and then I remember when they discovered the really bad greenscreen button and things started happening outside and it looked awful.
No one watches soap operas for the height of cinematography.
ELIAS Good evening, Detec— [Basira punches Elias.] BASIRA Useless, scheming piece of shit. ELIAS Detective, this is quite unnecess— [Basira continues to hurt Elias.] BASIRA I’m sorry, was that unnecessary? [Basira hits Elias once more.] BASIRA (Cont.) Because this is the most helpful you’ve been so far, unless you’ve got another crisis for me?
tbh absolutely deserved. god i love the scenes where elias has an awful time <3 it needs to happen more often.
BASIRA You always call me Detective. Is that supposed to mean something? ELIAS Honestly? I just like the way it sounds.
WHY IS HE LIKABLE? WHY IS THIS FUNNY TO ME? I JUST DONT LIKE BASIRA OR ELIAS AND THEY'RE JUST GIVING EACH OTHER MUTUAL TERRIBLE TIMES
ELIAS Will you? You’re not police anymore. You’ve done them some favours, but they’ve done you some as well, and I think you’ll find that the information that I’ve been giving to them has been far more consistently useful. You want to issue them an ultimatum? Go right ahead. I’m just not sure it’ll go quite how you hope. … And, um, no more violence, Detective, or I may have to call in the guards.
God, I hate how he turns it around, just manages to scrape himself an edge, prick. Like even in episode 200 (my beloved) he tries to get Jon to back down. It doesn't work, of course, but like, there was an attempt, there's always an attempt, I hate how he takes things in stride and always manages to come out on top, I hate that so much. Really hateable villain, he deserves to be drowned in a bucket /ref.
ARCHIVIST Can’t believe you’ve been seeing him all this time. BASIRA Oh yeah, that’s the terrible secret sabotaging the trust between us.
Ok, like, to be fair, talking with Elias did help end the world so...
BASIRA Yeah. John, we’ve been over this. The key is to not force people to feed you their trauma. You know, just don’t do it. ARCHIVIST It’s not that simple. BASIRA No, it is. Or I put you down.
Oh!
Look I was trying to find my original reaction to this, but I didn't talk about it to my partner (ily) or on my story (I believe the next one we're really digging into there is 154, because I was in fucking shambles), but I mean, I don't know exactly what I was feeling but it was probably like... shit.
Shit.
Like, I get Basira's perspective, right, but also you can't just. That's hardly proportionate and yet... isn't it? Gertrude would have done it, Adelard Dekkar would have done it, and when they do that sort of thing to monsters we hardly bat an eye, but... well, it's different, right, we know Jon.
It's like that post, about how the "monsters" were treated differently across the seasons, in season 1, Jane Prentiss is the entity formerly known as Jane Prentiss, in season 2... can't really remember, I mean they were seen as more... sentient, but still evil to their very nature. In season 3 we get a separation, Jon isn't like the other monsters, Mike Crew and Jude Perry were bad people, even though they were people. And then in season 4... well, come Scrutiny, we've realized that oh fuck, there is no separation, and we can view all the monsters as irredeemable and bad but... Jon's not irredeemable, he tries. So, what about all those other monsters. And in 152 we get it, how different is Jon from Jane Prentiss? Not really different at all. The season 5 comes along and none of the characters we're following are on the watched/human/victim side of the line, and the line wasn't really real back then.
Podded cast <3
ARCHIVIST (Mutters) I mean, that’s hardly… BASIRA Daisy’s been managing. ARCHIVIST Daisy is… Yeah, she’s managing.
Wow, why's Daisy managing better than Jon, it's not like she has the support of Basira, Jon, and presumably Daisy to help her, no it's just that she's fundamentally better /s.
Like, you can't expect someone to change for the better if you're only getting angry at them, if you treat someone like a monster, like they're going to fuck up all the time, then they're going to fuck up all the time.
ARCHIVIST Haven’t really been trying. Doing that sort of thing consciously … makes me hungry. BASIRA Oh, well then, find a statement to your tastes and read it. ARCHIVIST Yes, yes, I know. Thank you.
I had a little conversation with Japleeejay a while back so I'm just gonna put that here, inc his reactions in brackets because they're funny.
Also, I'm thinking about jon tma (🤯) And yk about my interpretation of his character which is the only correct one /hj (💙) And about how it's like his self esteem is shit, but that's when he's alone right? He's going to stand up for himself when other people are talking shit about him, but he's also going to internalize it and ruminate on it when he's alone? (‼️) Like uhh. He's obviously really guilty about what he's doing to his victims, but when they confront him about it, and in MAG 141 and MAG 148, he's defensive about it It's like it's not a binary thing right And if I may just like bring myself into it for a second because half of my jon thoughts are actual analysis and the other half is projection But like uhh the whole thing i had going on with the adhd, like I was fiercely proud of being adhd, and like i'd get angry at people for being ableist and stuff, but i also sort of... believed them? it's like, you can have contradictory feelings and emotions (‼️) And it's like it's different if you're saying it to yourself and someone [is] saying it to you? Like at least my immediate reaction to someone getting angry at me whether justified or not is to get angry back, and then yk i calm down and either don't think they're right or do, right? And it's like, Jon gets angry when people get angry at him, he gets defensive, and then he dwells on it a lot, right? Basicallly Um - Fanfic authors are doing it wrong i'm the only one doing it right - he's not. he's not like. yeah sometimes sure he's like that. he'll take it lying down sometimes - ^ especially when helen's saying something to him because she knows how to get under their skin - but like it's not a constant thing - hhhh idk how to describe it (💙)
(27 January, 2023)
ARCHIVIST I've been meaning to ask. The tape, the one of the, uh… my victim. You said Martin gave it to you? BASIRA Yeah. ARCHIVIST How was he? H-how did he look? Was he, uh…? BASIRA I don’t know. I didn’t see him. He just left it on my desk with a note. ARCHIVIST Oh, right. BASIRA Yeah. ARCHIVIST Can I ask what it said? BASIRA Um, yeah. It said, “Talk to him.” (The Archivist laughs bitterly.)
GOD THE PINING JUST GOUGE YOUR EYES OUT AND MAKE OUT FOR CHRISTS SAKE HHHH
I can't take this, I can't take 12 more episodes of this I can't.
Statement of Sunil Maraj, regarding their work as a security guard and the disappearance of their co-worker Samson Stiller.
OH YAY! They use he/they, that's lovely! I think I may have pointed this out a while back.
Someone had even put their name in the front, like they were afraid people were going to steal their manky instruction book.
Oh No
tbh i dont think i really paid attention much on my first listen but just like-
Oh No. it's a leitner.
Cos I saw some of the pages over his shoulder, and on one of them, there was … There was a picture of me, like a black and white photo of my face.
OH SPOOKY!
It was one of the old CRT sets, big and bulky, and the picture on it was never that clear, but for a moment, it looked like it was me on there, staring right back at myself as the screens slowly went black, getting closer and closer. The face on the monitor looked absolutely terrified, and I was starting to feel it myself. So, I just tried to smile, told him not to worry about it, and I headed out as quick as I could. My legs were shaking so hard I almost fell on the way out.
Don't know what to say just... spooky.
One time, when no-one in the store was looking, I threw a can of deodorant at one of them, hit it square on. Samson wore sunglasses for the next two days, and when I caught a glimpse of him without them, there was a crack, right down the centre of his eye.
Ohhh that's such a cool image also so spooky!!
I wanted to know why Samson hadn’t signed out of the building before he disappeared, why no matter who tried to reset the system, it always logged back in as him. Or why, whenever I was watching the monitors alone, I’d see him on that old CRT screen, staring right back at me, quietly calling for me to join him.
OH WOW THAT'S-
wow
Does reading a statement of the Ceaseless Watcher count as a sort of auto-cannibalism, I wonder?
He's started calling in the Ceaseless Watcher, not The Eye anymore.
Hmm. Feels more... reverential? In a way? I dunno. Need to compile a list of what people call the fears. I know Jon used to call it The Eye or The Beholding, I thought he switched to calling it the Ceaseless Watcher in season 4, but apparently not.
I honestly don’t care if Mr Maraj was chased down and consumed by his voyeuristic former friend, or if he has forgotten the whole affair, living in blissful ignorance. I just find my mind already wandering to the next statement, and the hopes that it won’t be quite as stale.
Is that a turning point? It feels like a turning point, but then again it just feels like he's already crossed that line, and there was no turning point, just an unstoppable march forwards.
Hm.

And the second half of chapter 13, covering the actual USJ introduction and the beginning of the villain attack that will go on to shape the rest of the series.
[No. 13 - Rescue Training]
Tumblr media
Image Description: Universal Studios Japan, c. 2250 AD or something IDK.
...no wait, it’s not? Damn, my bad. At least I’m not the only one to make that mistake. Still, the place if fucking HUGE, lookit how tiny the kids are there at the top of the stairs.
But seriously, I feel like this layout is different from what’s shown in the anime?
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was right, the layout is adjusted in the anime. Not, like, completely changed up or anything, but it’s a noticeable difference. I suppose it’s related to the differences between a static medium and a dynamic one…
The kids are all wondering if this is Universal Studios Japan. Thirteen speaks up, pointing out several of the zones - flood, landslide, conflagration - before mentioning that the place has every disaster and accident imaginable. She then states he built the facility himself, and that she calls it the ‘Unforeseen Simulation Joint’... or USJ for short.
(While the translation here uses male pronouns for Thirteen, the original Japanese uses neutral language here, erog the translators having to guess. But the most recent databook confirms Thirteen as female, as does the fact that the English dub was told to use a female cast for her by the Japanese anime studio, so. I’m rolling with the official databook on this one, in case you’re confused at the mismatch in pronoun use between me and the manga.)
Izuku and Ochako continue to prove to be perfectly in tune with one another:
Tumblr media
Can’t believe she’s out-excited Midoriya ‘hero nerd first, human being third’ Izuku when it comes to a hero. Truly shows how much she admired Thirteen.
Anyways, Aizawa asks where All Might is, since he was meant to meet them there. Thirteen mentions that he seems to have reached his limit during his morning commute, while holding up three fingers - ergo, right now the hero is resting in the break room. We get a brief flashback to the call Toshinori made, apologizing and saying he’ll try to show up near the end of the exercise. Aizawa grumbles about it being the height of irrationality, then says they should get started while thinking they should be on guard just in case.
Before they begin, however, Thirteen wants to discuss a few points. She brings up how her quirk, Black Hole, can suck in and tear apart anything. Izuku brings up how it’s been used to save people in all sorts of disasters, while Ochako is just vibing at high speed.
Tumblr media
Truly, she and Izuku are soulmates. Thirteen agrees, but then goes on to explain how her power could kill easily - and that she has no doubt that there are some among the class with similar abilities. Interesting that in this frame, Katsuki is centered, even while standing behind Izuku and Ochako.
Tumblr media
Both Izuku and Katsuki are more directly destructive, but I think Ochako and Kirishima, the other two really in panel here, also have quirks that can harm as well, if in less direct and obvious ways. Perhaps a nod to how any quirk can be dangerous?
Thirteen goes on to explain how the used of quirks is heavily restricted and monitored, and that while the system might seem stable, they must never forget that it only takes one wrong move with an uncontrollable quirk for people to die. All of this is explained over a cinematic shot of some idyllic city, and I can’t help but wonder whether this is the city that eventually will be known as Jakku. Or perhaps this is Kamino?
Anyways, the speech continues. Aizawa’s physical fitness test helped the students learn their own hidden potential, and All Might’s battle training let them experience the danger their quirks can pose to others. This class, however, is meant to show them a new perspective - how to use their quirks to save lives. Their powers are not meant to inflict harm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thirteen concludes their speech with their hope that the students leave the USJ with the understanding that they are meant to help people. They bow and thank the students for listening, and, well.
Tumblr media
Get yourself a squad like this.
Aizawa takes over, starting to speak about what they’ll be doing first, only to cut off as a swirl of darkness appears in the plaza behind and below him. He notices immediately, turning to look as the darkness opens up into a portal, a hand peeking out from the center.
(Kind of makes me think about Dr. Strange’s portals from the MCU? Or, well, maybe the comics, since I don’t think the movie was out yet.)
And so our main villain shows up.
Tumblr media
Terrifying! :D
Izuku’s narration notes that ironically, the villains appeared before them during their rescue training. Meanwhile, Aizawa shouts at the class to huddle up and not move, with the class staring in confusion. He then tells Thirteen to protect the students, all while more villains stream in through the now massive dark portal, its glowing eyes menacing.
Kirishima asks what’s happening, and whether those down below are battle robots like in the exam. Aizawa tells them not to move again as he pulls his goggles over his eyes, declaring the enemies as villains.
Tumblr media
You expect me to believe those aren’t freaking nomu as well???? I. What.
Tumblr media
The shadow starts to condense again and speak, identifying Thirteen and then, after a brief pause, Eraserhead as well. It then mentions that according to the staff schedule it received, All Might was supposed to be there. Aizawa identifies the shadow(?) as the cause of ‘that whole incident’, which I only just grocked to refer to the break-in the day before.
The guy with the hands all over (heretofore referred to as ‘that bitch’ or, more commonly, ‘Shigaraki’) asks where All Might is, and that they’ve come all this way and brought so many playmates, before again asking if All Might is here. This is probably meant to mockingly refer to All Might’s ‘I Am Here’ at the end, if that wasn’t blindingly obvious to everyone else.
Izuku’s narration comes up again, noting that the class learned (that day) what the pros are up against, what they face in the field - evil unleashed. Alongside this, we see that bitch Shigaraki wondering whether some dead kids will bring All Might to them, while Aizawa leaps into the fray with his scarf floating, and the class watches on in fear.
And that concludes chapter 13! What a marvelous introduction to our primary antagonist of the series, like, the anime does not do that creep level justice in the least. Next time, we begin the fun process of traumatizing school children! :D

Tagged by @spell-cleaver, just getting it done now because Tumblr is dumb with notifs.
How many works do you have on AO3?
39
What’s your AO3 total wordcount?
914,622
How many fandoms have you written for?
On AO3, 7 (counting Star Wars/Mando as all one fandom). I know I've written for more, but a lot of them are still on FFN, or disappeared from the Internet.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Legacy, Family is a Funny Thing, Wanted it to be a Game, Influence of Time, and Legacy II
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
I tried to for awhile, but I couldn't keep up with it, and I was running out of things to say. I felt stupid struggling just to say thank you, so I stopped.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
From a Certain Point of View can be angsty, depending on how the reader interprets the ending (I left it open ended for that reason). Feelings Carved on Japor was made retroactively angsty thanks to canon. Wanted it to be a Game was angsty throughout, but ended up with more of a bittersweet ending.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I used to, a lot. I have plots for some new ones (like I want to mush Star Wars and MCU together and see what happens), and I'm kiiiiinda doing a crossover with Bram Stoker's Dracula right now, though it's more inspired by that, as it's going to go off the rails in a couple chapters. Right now the only notable ones that are still out there in some form and worth mentioning are my YGO/HP and P4/FNaF crossovers.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yeah; someone tried to argue the physics of time travel on Influence of Time with me (which trying to argue physics with me is hilarious on its own, but for a fictional thing? Like wtf dude), and then they hit me with, "Well Vader WOULD NEVER" and I proceeded to ignore them.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
*nervous laughter while side eyeing the tentacle smut fic*
Oh uh. I write it a bit.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yeah, once. Back in ye olden days where I was writing my YGO/HP fic. The person was lifting whole passages and tweaking a few things because "they liked my fic so much and wanted to flatter me" or some shit like that.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone started translating Legacy into Russian, but they only did the prologue.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I'm doing that right now with Influence of Time, but it's more my bff is throwing crack ideas at my head and I write it down. She also does the editing, which is a huge help.
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Right now, it's DinLuke. I've shipped so many different things in the past though.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Ugh, right now that could be anything. My brain is absolute mush right now, and trying to get into a doctor to get my head examined is like pulling my own teeth with tweezers.
The one that would be like this regardless though is my P4/FNaF crossover. I'm in the middle of the second part , and there's supposed to be a third, but burnout on top of the FNaF creator being an absolute pud isn't helping.
What are your writing strengths?
I think my characterization is pretty good, as well as developing the plot.
What are your writing weaknesses?
My own confidence, or lack thereof. I have so many fics written or half started that will never see the light of day because I don't like them, not to mention my crippling fear of putting something original out there. I don't think I'd be able to stand it if something I slaved over was found objectively bad in every possible sense by the greater public.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
It depends on if I want the reader to know what's being said or not, or what character's perspective I'm writing from. If I put the text in the actual language, it's because it will come out later what it means (see the last few chapters of Family is a Funny Thing). Otherwise, I tend to just write it out in English, but use different quotation brackets to indicate the speaker is talking in a different language.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Uhhhhh... technically, Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The animated version. Back when it first came out.
Deliberately writing and posting on the internet, though... pretty sure it was Yu-Gi-Oh.
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
You're making me pick my favorite child what?
Man, idk; Wanted it to be a Game still has a soft spot in my heart. Part of me wants to go back and edit it a bit, now that I'm not really planning to write the sequels that I originally wanted to, but eh.
Legacy is my baby right now though; I'm putting so much effort into that series, I can't help but love it.
Uh... tagging whomever wants to do this, I guess? idk I think anyone I would tag has already done this.

every target novelisation....2!
planet of giants by terrance dicks ok so i think that the reason that this is...good, and an unearthly child was...not good, is because this was written 9 years later when like. other, non-terrance dicks people were also novelising stories and he wasn’t just grinding them out on an industrial level. planet of giants isn’t one of the greats of doctor who but this is a competent adaptation - it doesn’t add much but it does flesh out what’s already there, giving us some backstory elements and making the appearance of giant insects and bodies seem a bit more dramatic than they could manage in 1964. unfortunately it also alters my favourite line from the story (‘i don't know how you know, you're supposed to know!’) and the doctor is weirdly hostile at the beginning (he’s looking forward to ditching ian and barbara, he responds to barbara’s observation ‘drily’ like he’s being a bit sarcastic over her, um, *checks notes* noticing important details). also, dicks describes this in the opening as ‘the doctor’s most grotesque and terrifying adventure’ and i’m like...planet of giants? really??
doctor who and the dalek invasion of earth by terrance dicks ok this one legitimately doesn’t change much at all. it cuts down on some things (including the doctor’s end speech being shorter - i’m assuming that’s a space thing), fleshes out on pov bits as you can in prose, gets rid of the smacked bottom line. bizarrely there are a few times that susan calls her grandfather the doctor which...i’m pretty sure wasn’t there originally. aside from all those small details, yeah it’s basically the same, but it’s well adapted for prose (i genuinely think it stands as a novel in its own right), and depending on your reading speed it might actually be a nice, shorter alternative to the television version - it was around 45 minutes less time for me. some general things i wanted to comment on: the resistance is explicitly shown as kinda gender segregated (exclusively women are preparing food when we first see it) which irritated me; the description of parliament as a symbol of ‘human progress and tradition’ reminded me of blood harvest having the lords/commons system as the Ideal Form Of Government, in terms of how terrance dicks thinks (this may only interest me? idk i very probably spend too much time thinking about the political views of this particular dead dr who script editor); there’s a use of holocaust here that’s technically accurate to what the word literally means but it felt weird to me to use it.
the rescue by ian marter oh man i’ve been busy and this took me aages to read. it kinda...diverges increasingly from the original story as it goes on. we’ve got some scenes with the seeker crew (incidentally one of them says ‘ass’ and i was like???hello???you’re allowed to do that in a dr who book from 1987???), and then most of the expanded stuff is in the climax. dr who and bennett have a full on brawl! ian, barbara and vicki visit a destroyed didoi city on their way back to the tardis! mysterious silver figures! a giant worm encounter! incidentally, this does have way more of a downer ending than the original because it’s strongly implied that the last two of the didoi were killed by seeker crewmembers who fired in a panic, after which the report that forms the epilogue ends with “goodwill to all persons” to give us a taste of bitter irony. so that’s kinda grim. um...there’s actually a lot of little changes and minor expansions to this one as well so off the top of my head: we learn more about why vicki left earth (global warming :/), sandy is a lot more threatening-looking than on screen, the crashed ship gets its name changed to astra-nine, ian and barbara hold hands briefly, barbara’s fall really leaves her beaten up. i like the seeker crew comparing the tardis briefly passing them to various non-police box objects from the future (although the link to china is a bit eastern world=alien association for my tastes), dr who telling vicki ‘give that pretty face a wipe’ is clearly him attempting to cheer her up and it’s not meant to be weird but i found it weird. finally, i’ve gotta say i appreciate ian marter’s commitment to ‘mildly unsettling’ in his descriptions of tardis materialisations. this was the last novelisation he wrote before his death (the book’s dedicated to him) and mild criticisms aside, i do think he’s a good writer and he brings an interestingly different angle to the series.
the romans by donald cotton oh my god. how do i even start this. i’m not even going to try cataloguing all the changes because this isn’t even close to a straight adaptation. it’s told in the form of various documents collected by tacitus - the doctor’s diary, ian’s journal that he keeps to prove to the headmaster at coal hill that he and barbara haven’t just eloped (i’m not joking, this is the textual reason for it), an assassin’s letters home to his mum, nero’s scribblings, and various other little details. vicki and barbara get less attention than on screen because we don’t see much from their perspective (vicki unfortunately doesn’t even get to chase the assassin out, she just screams in this), and the nero assassination plot is exclusively confined to being mentioned in the epilogue. it’s also a lot broader, or at least consistently broader, which means that ian’s side of things is treated a lot more lightly (which i was personally fine with) but also that we still get nero’s predatory behaviour being played for laughs. there’s also a few comments about women early on that i was unhappy with, and use of fat as an insult. generally, though, i thought this was great! there were a lot of things that i don’t have space or time to include here but i really liked. i guess i’d consider this as a companion piece to the tv version rather than a replacement, which some of these do basically serve as. they tell the same basic story, but they’re so different in a lot of ways that i think it’s worth looking at both. i just checked my notes and remembered this so content warning: poppea sabina’s first section references suicide.
doctor who and the zarbi by bill strutton ok so i think the web planet is boring. i don’t know completely why, i don’t think it’s any one thing, it has some interesting ideas, but it is! it’s fucking boring! anyway, we have a bit more casual sexism in the novel, we’re missing that fun convo about aspirin between vicki and barbara, but really i don’t think it adds or changes much - like even the chapters correspond pretty much exactly to the tv cliffhangers. i guess it’s competently written prose-wise, but i genuinely can’t get over my conviction that this story is boring. am i being unfair? maybe! i like some of the early atmosphere, though, and i appreciate a book which refers to ‘the ship tardis’ (lowercase) and ‘doctor who’ throughout the entire thing. oh yeah, and i encourage you all to look up the illustrations for this. i don’t know who that woman is but she’s definitely not vicki.
doctor who and the crusaders by david whitaker ah yes, the infamous ‘susan married david cameron’ novelisation. tbh i don’t like the crusades and this has the same problems - i don’t care about the english, el akir is every orientalist stereotype whitaker could possibly cram into one man, and That’s Not How A Harem Works. do i think it’s the most egregiously racist doctor who story of all time? probably not! it certainly has sympathetic arabic characters too. but i prefer most other historicals, at least. however, if that isn’t you, i’m sure you’ll get something out of this. there aren’t any particularly extreme changes to the plot structure, although it’s missing some later scenes at the english court, but it’s well written and probably if you like the original you’ll enjoy it more than i did. there’s some dated language surrounding black characters, though, i’m not a fan of the whole ‘we aren’t so different’ speech ian has (because it rests on ‘we all believe in a higher power’ which uh. i don’t. guess that means i’m not ‘civilised’. also generally i don’t like the argument that we should respect each other because of what we have in common - you should respect other people whatever!), and the prologue at the beginning where they muse on history and destiny assumes that the english invaders and the arabs are both equally right in their own ways (the doctor outright says this!)
the space museum by glyn jones so, i really like the space museum. mainly for vicki’s revolutionary fervour, but there are other reasons too. however, i don’t think that this really adds enough to be of interest - although we do get some information about the two alien species’ biology, and a bonus explanation of why everyone speaks english (the moroks briefly considered invading earth so programmed some earth languages into their translation system). there’s a bit more wandering around the museum, some minor tweaks and expansions in other areas, an underground tunnel scene where we learn a bit of the planet’s backstory...ian and the doctor are very snippy to each other in this, which i find funny. oh yeah, and there’s a bizarrely meta bit where ian comments on poor dialogue? basically, this is a book i enjoyed, but really it just makes me want to watch the space museum instead of reading it. just a heads up, there’s a character who briefly considers suicide to get out of his bosses being angry with him.
the chase by john peel ok before i get started i need to establish that the cover for this one slaps. anyway, i don’t respect john peel at all but this was...alright? doesn’t expand much plotwise (although i suspect both the sand monsters at the beginning and the plants at the end have slightly more to do) but we get a fair bit of pov stuff. unfortunately lacking ian’s dad dancing and hi-fi the panda, the marie celeste bit is no longer played for comedy (barbara angsts over it) and even though the two paragraphs dragging morton dill are kinda funny i’m not sure how i feel about him being committed for claiming he saw daleks. ian and barbara’s departure plays out a little differently. steven is blond for some reason. we learn as well that daleks are charged by solar panels (at least they’re pro-green energy??)
the time meddler by nigel robinson pretty competent, straight down the middle novelisation, although that is tempered by inserting some weird sexist bits for steven and also lowkey being nostalgic for 11th century england at a few points? it’s also a bit more violent than we see on tv, and if anything the rape is more loudly implied, so heads up. other than that, there are a few minor embellishments (we’re explicitly told the dr and monk recognise each other, vicki tells steven that the tardis is important to her because it’s her home, a few differences between the monk’s tardis and the doctor’s are described, vicki views steven following her as a triumphant victory in their power struggle which i personally find funny), and there’s a prologue (recapping steven’s arrival in the tardis) and an epilogue (which delays the monk’s discovery of the broken tardis because he walks to hastings first to try and get involved there). i had fun, but it’s not a must read.

Fate or luck?
Tumblr media
A/N: I am so sorry for not posting anything in a while but I am exhausted... Part 5 of like a whole new beginning is coming soon I promise and I’m sorry for how bad this is and how far away from the request I strayed @indelwen-of-mirkwood...
Prompt:  Can yo write something for Tom Hiddleston coming to a foreign country by himself and he gets kind of lost, the reader speaks English so helps him out. Maybe they do sightseeing together and have lunch. Idk! Thanks a lot dear!
Word count: 1245
Warnings: Shitty writing and not edited!!
Tom Hiddleston x reader
It had been a while since Tom had had the opportunity to actually just sit back and relax, especially by himself. Even if it may be short, he still counted it as a little mini vacation. In a week he was supposed to attend a gala in Stockholm, but he had decided to fly out a little early and take a few days off, he had after all, done more than enough to deserve it. He made up his mind and booked a hotel in a smaller city just a few hours away, just to get a wider perspective of the country and maybe just maybe, avoid some attention.
There was just one teensy tiny problem with his plan. He had never been to this town before, and should he use his phone for directions all the time… He didn’t even want to think about the length of that bill. No, he was on his own here. The hotel was big and easy enough to find from a distance so he should be fine, right? At least that was what he had told himself this morning before leaving it.
The weather of Sweden was known for being cold in comparison to other countries, but not as cold as London, not in his opinion anyway. He had also read that in this time of the year it could be very unpredictable, which now proved to be true. As he had walked through the big lobby the sun had been shining in through the big windows, but now as he walked down the streets, the sky just got darker and darker. No matter the weather, Tom wanted to make the most out of this little trip and nothing would stop him. Famous last words from someone who has never experienced the Swedish thunderstorms.
The wind picked up and almost blew him of his feet, the rain hit his face with full force and it to him it felt like being pricked with thousands of needles. One would think living in London he would be used to all kinds of rain, but maybe not. As the lightning lit up the city streets and the thunder following right after he started to look for any sort of store to take shelter in. The odds seemed to be in his favour this time and he found himself standing right outside a cafe.
The bell signalling his entrance made a pair of eyes turn his way. Only after a few seconds did he notice that he was alone in the little space, but then again, who was as stupid as him and stayed out even after the sky darkened like that? that’s right. No one. The eyes belonged to the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her y/h/c was up in a messy ponytail, it was a futile attempt at keeping the her out of her face he thought to himself. She was dressed in a simple yet classy way, in what looked to be her favourite shirt judging by how worn it was, a pair of normal blue jeans and to top it all of, a apron in a stunning shade of y/f/c.
She seemed to come to her senses first and asked him in a cheery and practiced tone if there was for anything she could be of service. Tom being the gentleman he was, ordered a cup of tea to keep him warm while he waited out this storm. if it would ever go away, that is, right now it looked like it could go on and on forever. Since he was the only customer she was quick to finish up his order and bring it to him. He had taken of his coat and sat down at a stool by the window, giving him a very wet view.
“The rain doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon does it?”
he heard a voice say beside him. It was sweet and hinted at an foreign accent, but it was near perfect English which surprised him. He knows it is stereotypic to assume every rumour of Swedish people are true, but he had never visited the country and didn’t know exactly what to expect. He now remembered that he had placed his order in English without realizing that she may not have understood him, but judging by her accent, she understood him very well and he answered her in his thick British accent only he could provide.
“No it does not I’m afraid”
“Well, I’m glad you came in, otherwise you would have gotten completely drenched”
Their conversation flowed freely and easily, they talked about anything and everything only stopping once or twice for refills and the occasionally needed translation. The woman whose name he had found out was y/n, had brought out cake for the two them, stating that they might as well make the best of the storm. She told him how she always had had a love for the English language and made it a priority in her life to keep it alive, even if not many in her circle thought the same. It also turned out she knew he was an actor but wanted him to be able to have some time out of the spotlight. Something he was grateful for, a thousand times over.
**********
The weather cleared up after what seemed like mere seconds, but in reality had been hours. Tom didn’t want to leave. He was intrigued by this beautiful woman in front of him and he couldn’t let this be the first and last time he ever saw her. There had to be something he could do. Then it hit him, in his frenzy of trying to find shelter earlier he had totally forgotten which way from which he came. He was lost.
Both of them stepped out of the cafe and as y/n locked the door he tried his best to figure out in which direction he needed to go. But he was quick to give up when he couldn’t find any recognizable signs or buildings.
“Is something wrong Tom?”
It had taken him a while to get her off the Mr.Hiddleston train, but now his name flowed from her lips, sweet as sugar cake. He didn’t want to admit he was, in fact, lost. But he may not have a choice given that he didn’t bring his phone.
“I seem to have forgotten the way from which I came, do you happen to know the way to the grand hotel?”
She had giggled a little at that. Apparently he pronounced the name “funny”, in her ears. But the universe had once again worked in his favour and she did know the way. It was supposedly one of Sweden's biggest hotel chains and located in the city’s busiest part. And when he flopped down on his bed he couldn’t help but smile at the crumpled piece of paper in his hand. He felt like a boy again as he put y/n*s number in his phone and sent a message.
We should do this again,                                                                                   may I treat you to dinner tomorrow                                                               night?                                                                                                                /TH
Who knows where the universe takes him next?

BnHA Chapter 216: You’re a Good Man, Shinsou Hitoshi
Previously on BnHA: Deku calmed his emotions and activated Blackwhip a second time, this time On Purpose, and for a moment it looked like he was going to completely curb stomp poor Shinsou. But then he crumpled in pain and the quirk vanished, and he realized he wasn’t physically strong enough to use that quirk just yet. So instead he chased after Shinsou using good ol’ full cowl. Meanwhile Ochako captured Monoma, who taunted her about having one last ace up his sleeve. This turned out to be a Twin Impact shot he’d been saving to hit Deku with, and it worked pretty nicely, but unfortunately our boy Shinsou didn’t have enough experience yet to take full advantage of the resulting opening. Meanwhile Ochako went to bail out Mina and Mineta and took out not one but two more opponents singlehandedly like the fucking ninja she is. Mina took out the third with a raging uppercut, leaving Deku to wrangle Shinsou, thus securing 1-A’s total victory. Now all that remains to be seen is what kind of excuse Deku will come up with for his sudden new quirk, and whether or not Shinsou will be accepted into the hero course. We’re all rooting for you, kid.
Today on BnHA: The 5th set wraps up with a 4-0 victory for Team A, which also gives class A the overall victory over class B, having won 3 of the 5 matches. As 1-A celebrates, Shinsou broods. He was able to piece together that the exercise was a test for his potential transfer, but he feels like he didn’t accomplish enough. The teachers gather the two teams for the post-game analysis and are all “what the fuck, Midoriya.” Deku is all “I don’t know either,” and for some reason everyone just buys that and moves on with their lives. Deku credits Ochako and Shinsou with helping to save him, but Shinsou says he just did it to stop his team from losing. Aizawa chokes some sense into him and says that just because he’s not a perfect 100% self-sacrificing martyr all the time doesn’t mean he’s not worthy of being a hero. Everyone else chimes in and says that Shinsou did really good, and Vlad says that although they still need to make it official, it’s more than likely that Shinsou will be joining the hero course next year. Having settled all that, Aizawa asks Monoma if he can do him a favor and come with him to see Eri the next day.
(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my mostly-unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’m caught up with the manga now at chapter 225, so any ETAs will reflect that.)
so we’re opening with Shinsou’s perspective on those last few moments against Deku
wow
Tumblr media
you’re telling me Izuku was spinning around over and over again in mid-air? he wasn’t just twisting the binding cloth around?? he himself was literally twirling at high speed? that’s what this panel was depicting?? the author of this series is drunk
ahhhhhh my poor exhausted lavender son
Tumblr media
welcome to shounen manga, friend. we only go forwards not back
ahhhhh fff dammit Shinsou
Tumblr media
YOU BETTER NOT START CRYING OR I’M GONNA LOSE IT
and now we’re belatedly getting the hero names of the four class B kids waaaaaay after the fact
Tumblr media
Emily??
(ETA: Exorcism of Emily Rose?? that’s what Viz’s translator speculated, anyway. idk I don’t watch horror movies so I don’t know what else it could be.)
I like the name “Mines” for Shouda though! his quirk kinda is like a landmine I guess. also this poor kid has seen better days Mina what did you do to him
anyways so poor Vlad is being forced to announce class 1-A’s perfect 4-0 victory for the second time in a row
haha check out Mina’s kung fu pose
Tumblr media
and Ochako’s peace sign. MVPs. I stan some motherfucking legends here I tell you what
oh lol it was Midnight that was doing the commentary since Vlad went with Aizawa and All Might
Tumblr media
I’m glad the kids’ petitioning paid off
so in the end class 1-A once again proved themselves against the unfortunate class 1-B who had all of the cool quirks but none of the luck
Midnight’s making the official announcement and everyone is cheering!
poor class B
Tumblr media
it’s not your fault, Manga. at least your team actually won, mainly thanks to you
ahhhh we’re cutting back to Shinsou and his face is hidden and he’s tugging at his scarf and hesitantly addressing Vlad and Aizawa
SHINSOU STOP IT
Tumblr media
SOMEONE GIVE HIM A HUG!! AND STOP LEAVING HIM IN SUSPENSE!!!
he says this was also supposed to be his transfer exam. so he knew??
lol Vlad is asking Aizawa if he told him, but Shinsou says he basically just put two and two together even though he wasn’t 100% sure
“not to mention, I was the only one who participated in two matches” yeah that was certainly a big clue
lmao Vlad looks so impressed
Tumblr media
just how low are your standards dude
and now Aizawa is changing the topic and says it’s time for the teachers’ critiques! OH BOY THIS OUGHTA BE GOOD
Deku’s critique basically should just consist of “what the actual fuck Midoriya”
and like I said in the previous recap, Shinsou should get credit for his performance in the first battle as well as his save in this battle which showed he has the true spirit of a hero!
LOOOOOOOOOOOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I WANT TO SHAKE HORIKOSHI’S GODDAMN HAND
so Aizawa’s asking what the principle is behind Deku’s new move since it’s so radically different from his established “super strength” quirk
and Deku’s just standing there nervously
Tokoyami and Kuroiro are bonding over their mutual admiration of how goth the new quirk is
Tumblr media
hmmmm how you wanna play this Deku
Tumblr media
so basically just be all “fuck if I know, this quirk only manifested for the first time eight months ago and it keeps surprising me with weird new shit. petition to rename it ‘mystery quirk’”
Tumblr media
sidestepping the question like a pro there Deku
so he says his power suddenly started overflowing and he couldn’t suppress it and it scared him, but that thanks to Shinsou and Ochako’s help it turned out all right
he says that if Shinsou hadn’t knocked him out he’s not sure what would have happened
and he’s turning to Shinsou now and explaining that he wasn’t bluffing earlier, and he’s thanking him
what the fuck Shinsou
Tumblr media
were you?? fooled me then
YESSSSSSSS GIVE OCHAKO HER PROPS
Tumblr media
SHE WAS A FUCKING BADASS. NOW TALK ABOUT THE PART WHERE SHE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR CAPTURING 3 OF THE 5 ENEMY TEAM MEMBERS
noooo goddammit Mina not now!!
Tumblr media
MINA ARE YOU JEALOUS NO ONE HAS GIVEN YOU CREDIT YET. WE WERE GETTING TO THAT, BE PATIENT
oh sheesh lmao
Tumblr media
and now she’s nervously twiddling her fingers and smiling hesitantly and saying she’d rather do that than not do anything and regret it later
oh my gosh
Tumblr media
SO PROUD OF MY LITTLE BABY GIRL. YES!!
and holy shit but I want to take that picture of him smiling almost imperceptibly and fucking frame it
look at Ochako managing to completely deflect the attention away from Deku somehow. not only was she the MVP of the battle, but she just keeps saving his ass even afterward
holy shit
Tumblr media
DEKU’S FACE ALSO BEING BEET RED THOUGH. HE MUST LOOK LIKE A GODDAMN RADISH
anyway, so Shinsou says he just did what Ochako asked him to do
yeah, but you did it despite them being on the opposing team though!
Tumblr media
exactly. you knew it was the right course of action and you didn’t hesitate
SHINSOU STOP MAKING THESE SAD FACES!!!
Tumblr media
FOR FUCK’S SAKE I CAN’T TAKE THIS??
AIZAWA OH MY GOD YES
Tumblr media
PLEASE REASSURE YOUR DEPRESSED PURPLE SON AND TELL HIM THAT HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG AND HE’S A GOOD HERO
sdlfhaslkdfj
Tumblr media
holy --
Tumblr media
lmao at Kaminari immediately breaking into a chant. methinks the mangaka is too self-aware
and well then, since Best Dad Aizawa Shouta has officially entered the ranks of parents who occasionally discipline their children via shocking comedic violence (consider also: All Might decking Deku at the beach a mere chapter before Mitsuki’s infamous introduction), maybe we can finally put that debate to rest. I think it’s pretty clear when Horikoshi is intentionally portraying abuse and when he’s just being over the top because this is a fictional story in a fictional world where not three pages ago there was a character with a literal comic book for a head
oh snap Aizawa
Tumblr media
in other words, it’s okay to be a little selfish. sometimes selfish is even needed. because he’s absolutely right, if you don’t take care of yourself as well you’ll fuck yourself over before long and then you won’t be able to save anyone
and also, at the end of the day, if you save everyone successfully and complete the mission, does it really make sense to stand around and argue whether or not your intentions were pure enough?
anyways needless to say I’m really digging this “nobody’s perfect” speech right here you guys
Tumblr media
(ETA: oh hey it’s Aizawa’s Mysterious Cloudy Friend, Shirakumo! probably. hey Shirakumo. what’s your fucking deal goddammit)
this is basically Aizawa’s version of All Might’s speech from chapter 120. I always love when the series metas about what it means to be a hero and what separates the great ones from everyone else. and we saw firsthand in Bakugou’s match just a few chapters ago the difference it makes when a hero is focused on both winning and rescuing
now Deku is complimenting Shinsou on all of his strategic moves like dropping those pipes down on him and trying to lead him back to where everyone else was to regain his advantage
oh my god you guys Deku is so passionate and generous with his praise, this is exactly the kind of thing Shinsou needed to hear though
Tumblr media
kinda getting that “a true hero doesn’t just save people, they save people’s hearts” vibe thing here on top of everything else
oh my god Deku
Tumblr media
what the fuck are you talking about, if anything you lean into this too much and you need to relax a little and take some of Aizawa’s advice to heart
ahhhhhhhhHHHHHH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YESSSSSSSSSSS THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR. YOU DID IT SHINSOU I’M SO PROUD OF YOU
oh my god. the one hand clutching his scarf and the other one in a clenched fist. and that face. oh shit here come the feels
and I desperately need to know if this means next year as in January/next term, or next year as in when they move on to year 2
(ETA: Viz’s translation indicates it’ll happen in their second year of school.)
OH FOR FUCK’S SAKE
Tumblr media
GODDAMMIT HORIKOSHI I WAS SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS CHAPTER TO FIND OUT, AND THEN YOU GO AND PULL THIS SHIT. UNBELIEVABLE
(ETA: I love that both classes so clearly want him though. again, they’ve all collectively adopted him and I love it
also, class 1-A still has a traitor in their midst, so depending on when and how that all goes down, they may just end up having a vacancy, just saying...)
oh my god
Tumblr media
Mina this is why I want you to run for President. and Aizawa, she absolutely is right and he should be punished
loooool Monoma is trying!
Tumblr media
hang in there buddy
so getting back to that, I’m guessing what happened there was that he did take One for All the quirk, but not any of the stockpiled power within Izuku? because to get that it has to be willed to you by the previous owner. so basically he was trying to activate it, and it probably was working, but his version of the quirk was at OFA Prime levels. basically starting from scratch with no additional power stored up other than his own. and we all agree this is actually very fortunate for him and he’d be getting carted off to Recovery Girl right now if things had gone differently
does that not bother him, by the way? like, Ochako just figured he was “bluffing”, but Monoma knows he was actually trying to activate the quirk and nothing was happening. I wonder what he made of that. it seems like maybe he’s too caught up in the loss to class A to really think much on it just yet
(ETA: so apparently he knows enough about how his quirk works to have already figured this out, lol.)
whoa oh shit and I just read the last three panels and a ton of interesting stuff happened so quickly lol
Tumblr media
okay let’s break this down and then we’ll end the recap
(1) Deku is so fucking pure. middle of a battle and being attacked, and his only concern is that the quirk is gonna be too much for Monoma and badly injure him
(ETA: and can I just say, the other students could have used a little more of that concern though. the teachers too for that matter.)
(2) so I take this to mean Horikoshi is going to explain what happened, but for now I’m assuming my speculation is more or less near the mark. he definitely did take OFA because you could see the telltale red flashing pulsing shit happening with his skin. so it has nothing to do with Deku originally being quirkless; it’s the way that OFA as a quirk works
(3) Deku is super fucking lucky that no one started questioning what happened with his quirk again, what with Monoma bringing the subject back up
and lastly, (4) OH SHIT. is he gonna have Monoma copy Eri’s quirk to see if he can control it? lol we only just established how lucky he is to be alive after taking Deku’s quirk. what are you trying to do to this poor kid
though I am glad to see Aizawa being a logical dad who cares about his baby girl and is constantly thinking of ways in which to possibly help her out. ah well, hope nothing goes wrong there
and that’s it! on to the next chapter to hopefully see Bakugou and All Might grill Deku about WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED lol

top ten kagepro songs?? 0:
*rubs hands* u now i read your whole wall of text about this? well now its my turn c:
warning half of this post is just about Shinigami Record bc i’m looking WAAY too deep into it but honestly i love doing that gbdhsg that part has over 500 words and im not sorry
Disclaimer: The first few don’t have numbers bc I just CANNOT choose a favorite ok ngsdhjgs
Shinigami Record - I’m gonna start with this one because i was already planning on making a post about how underappreciated this song is… half of this post is probably gonna be about this song alone so i might as well put it as nuumbr one tbh
Musically it’s really simple and just so amazingly gentle. I feel like the slow piano and the way its played in the verses helps to convey Azami’s feelings really well. It starts as just a bunch of lonely piano notes, but then as Azami finds someone who loves her, feelings grow and change, so does the guitar replace the piano for the second verse. Then the harmonies for the part when Azami creates the Kagerou Daze make it feel not only more mystical but also give it more emotion. She creates it filled with love for her family after all, this part needed to have a lot of emotion in it! But then it quiets down and the lonely piano returns.. the guitar and piano interlace each other(i cant find a good english word for it im sorry) while Azami’s voice is growing more unsure and then ‘gasps’ with the realization, in a way. The harmonies return and we hear both the lonely piano and the love-filled guitar. Azami is really conflicted and u can HEAR that!! Then it bursts with the pitch change and you can just hear how heartbroken she is! the highest note really reminds me of when people are trying to sing but they’re crying so their technique is egh but it has so much emotion?? idk maybe its just IAs voice… and then after she sings “I still love you” theres a drop that sounds like slamming doors and the guitar is GONE. It ends on the same lonely piano we started with(different pitch blahblah i know ok) but there’s also the added noise that you can either hear traffic in, OR the sea/ocean waves. I KNOW im reading way too much into this but traffic could allude to our time, where the main story is set and the fact that what Azami did has consequences reaching much further than she could have ever imagined but also that despitwat happened, most people don’t even know about her story and everythings… well, normal. The sea waves would be just like the world she’s come to love and she’s leaving it all behind i guess lolThe way this song tells Azami’s story is uh, very simplified, but i think it works well. It gives you enough information to feel sorry for her even if it doesn’t really explain much. We only see Azami’s perspective so i’m not surprised or disappointed that reasons behind Tsukihiko’s disappearance arent really stated. Also i’m kind of glad it doesn’t delve deeper into the story, because i personally really didn’t like these chapters of the manga at all lol bc i didnt agree with the characterization and it didnt show Azami’s loneliness as much and kind of ruined the magic. I like Azami’s story when its still told as a kind of fairytale…This is also probably THE best Kagepro song in terms of tuning, too. idk what happened but i feel like here it’s much more soft than the other songs which makes it all the more enjoyable.
one day i’ll write a full essay on this…
I’m not gonna go that deep into any of the other ones dont worry
Remind Blue - Easily the best song on the Mekakucity Reload album. While i adore Additional Memory as well, my heart belongs to Remind Blue. Because the range isn’t that big, Miku’s voice and Jin’s tuning of don’t get overbearing. Im also a sucker for lyrics connecting to past events or symbols so the whole time reading the translation i was just lying in bed like kermit surrounded by heart emojis. I may or may not make a cover of this one…
Lost Time Memory - I feel like all that could be said about this song has already been said so I’ll just say i love it. I was introduced to it through Juby’s english cover(Classical Rock Arr. version!! thats important, i love this arrangement probably more than the original but the dude who made it just doesnt have a nice voice for this song… Juby’s not perfect but this cover’s good enough) an really this is the song that made me want to learn about Kagepro so there’s a lot of pure nostalgia connected to this one.
4. Ayano’s Theory of Happiness - whenever i tell someone new about kagepro i always say this is the song that makes me cry and laugh the hardest. I laugh a lot because of the tv anime version bc lmao every time i see it i LOSE IT gndnsdgs The reason i cry is quite obvious i think, but i still feel the need to specify it’s because of the lyric “so I hope you can love tomorrow”. It’s just such a simple thing but it makes me tear up 99% of the time. And like the thing is, the last couple of lines aren’t directed at any particular character either so its like she’s singing to us. She hopes we can love tomorrow as well… and just for you Ayano, I will try.
Also MARiA’s cover is the best one i barely listen to the original now lmao
5. Summertime Record - did i mention im a sucker for lyrics where the character is looking back at what happened? bc yeah i am. This song is really dear to my heart for some reason so much so that when at a camp with the choir ive been in for like 6years we were supposed to make a little song about it for the last campfire, i managed to get my friends to write the lyrics to this song with me and i think that in itself is very fitting to this song. and just.. yeah the whole thing just feels very welcoming and I love Haruka so
6. Children Record - BOYS👏 AND👏 GIRLS👏 yeah this song staight up slaps and i love it (altho i mostly listen to the version with MARiA bc the tuningin this one :’) its realy good go listen) and uh yeah its just a really good opening to the series! idk what to say exactly so uh really lets not drag this out
7. Additional Memory - so when this song came out i had to lay down for like a week bc just… woah yeah ok!! all the motifs and melodies from other songs just hit me so HARD and THE PV OH MY GOOOD i was SCREAMING! and youre absolutely right about the lyrics!! “if this were all a misunderstanding, i don’t want to hear it” just HITS and HURTS and GOD YEAH
8. Kagerou Days - ahh classic above classics…. the one where you’ve set your expectations for Hibiya to just be a good childhood friend only to have it be crushed by other media… its just a great base for angsty AUs for anytwo cahracters that care about each other really and i love it! also like when i first listenedi was like what and when i realized whats happening i was just…  poetic cinema guy but with hearts i really love angst huh
9. Headphone Actor - I don’t know what to say apart from I love Takane, I love the whole Harutaka story, I love the metaphor and the music and I have a little lesbian moment every time i listen to LiSA’s version of the song(THE WAY SHE SHINGS “Dokoka e to mukatteru”??? I basically dont know anything about slavic languages, so what would you say are the characteristics that distinguish them from other indoeuropean languages like germanic and romance ones? You can use Bulgarian as a reference since it's your mother tongue :3
Okay, so, for general characteristics, they’re Indo-European obvs, and are separated into three major branches: East, West, and South. This divergence only occured about 1500 years ago, if I’m not mistaken, plus the entire Balto-Slavic family is pretty conservative, so as a result Slavic languages are still mutually intelligible to some degree. Personally, I think this is expressed mostly within the individual branches though? For instance, I as a Bulgarian understand Serbian reasonably well, but Czech sounds like gibberish to me. (Some people may disagree, opinions vary.)
Something that separates them from Romance, Germanic, Celtic, just Western European languages in general is that they’re satem languages, as opposed to WE languages, which are centum. Essentially, despite being European, they’re classified as “eastern” and therefore closer to Indo-Iranian languages. Now I’ve heard people say that they’re pretty similar to some ancient Indo-Aryan languages like Sanskrit (on account on being conservative), but idk how true that is, there’s a surprising amount of sensationalism in linguistics lol. What I will say is that I came accross the etymology of Baghdad (which is Persian) recently, and it immediately made sense to me as a Slavic speaker, so there’s that.
There are general Slavic grammar rules (three genders, complex case systems, lack of articles, etc.) but Bulgarian isn’t a good choice to illustrate them because it’s… weird. We yeeted our case system sometime during the Middle Ages, so our language doesn’t have that anymore, but it does have definite articles, and our verbs are apparently really fucked up. Exceptions prove the rule, I guess.
In terms of how Slavic languages sound, there’s a few common features such as palatal consonants, consonant clusters (in Serbo-Croatian there are words with no vowels whatsoever, that’s always been crazy to me) as well as something called “Slavic liquid metathesis” which idk much about but evidently contributes to the overall Slavic feel of a language. Across the board I’ve noticed there are a lot of “sh”, “ch” and “ts” sounds, so no wonder they have their own letters in Cyrillic (ш, ч, ц).
I realise this all seems very dry and maybe boring lmao, but I’m trying to write an “Intro to Slavic languages” and be as exhaustive as I can, and even though I know most of this stuff offhand I still have to look it up just to make sure I’m not unintentionally misleading you.
As far as my personal perspective, I feel almost as though the languages I speak exist in entirely separate parts of my brain and I just switch between them, hardly ever making any sort of comparison (at least when it comes to Bulgarian and English; German I’m not as proficient in). I suppose Bulgarian sounds more expressive to me? But that’s probably all to do with psychology tbh.
And I do like it, Bulgarian I mean - I like that it’s effective and logical right down to its spelling, I like that it’s been able to absorb foreign influence without losing its character, I like that you can make a diminutive out of pretty much anything and stack diminutives on top of diminutives (заек - rabbit, зайче - bunny, зайченце - an even smaller and cuter bunny), which btw I’ve heard can be done in other Slavic languages too. Another thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of different words can be made by attaching a different prefix to a root:
казвам - to tell
разказвам - to narrate
изказвам - to express
отказвам - to refuse/deny
наказвам - to punish
Which is present in German as well, but for some reason it’s rare in English? Idk. I remember once I was struggling to explain to an English speaker the difference between чакам and почакам and all I managed to come up with was that the first one just means “to wait”, and the second one implies you’ll wait a while, but not indefinitely. There’s nuance, but I only really pay attention to it when I have to translate something directly.
Anyways, this got way, way longer than I intended it to be, the last thing I wanna say is more about mentality than strictly language: perhaps you’ve heard that (according to most people) “Slav” comes from slovo, which means “word”. I find it really fascinating that ancient Slavs decided to identify themselves by the common language spoken by all tribes, essentially as “people who can speak” (we still have an expression that reflects that: dar slovo, or “the gift of speech”), and conversely, everybody else as “non-speakers”. Even in modern Slavic languages, the word for “Germans” is some variation of nemci, or literally, mutes. I think this language-based identity may have helped foster a sense of kinship between various groups of people who grew apart over time, and is perhaps why “Slav” and “Slavic” still exists as an umbrella term/identity, denoting shared heritage in a way I don’t really see in other major language families. (Yeah this is super off-topic and I could be totally wrong but it’s just a thought I had.)
