STATUS UPDATES: GOING INTO 2024
2023 has been rough for me in all manner of ways but I will say it has been very fruitful with regards to my writing. I managed surpass my goal of 100k words, reaching an unfathomable 150k at present, and I’ve even managed to hit a big milestone when it comes to my following! I’m extremely grateful to all my readers, both those that have stuck with me and those who are new, and I wish I had adequate words to really express that. but going into 2024 I will likely be writing less frequently than I did this year. this is due to my own health, and a multitude of other problems that I can no longer keep on the back burner.
plenty of you have seen mentions of hospital visits and procedures on my blog, and while I’m not very comfortable oversharing about medical stuff I do want to be transparent about the fact that I will be posting fics less because of it. I’ve been in and out of semi hiatus for the better part of 4 months but I was always awful at sticking to it. next year I want to actually give myself grace, and take care of my body.
please do not fear!!! this resolution actually aligns perfectly with my writing goals for 2024. I want to focus on lengthening my word counts. I’d love to post fewer fics, but to have said fics be 25 to 50k respectively, rather than to post a lot of 1 to 15k fics. mostly I want to work on my own impatience when it comes to writing, and berate myself less for what I think I should be doing writing-wise. I will still be around on here, and I always want to talk with you guys (and read whenever the mood strikes!!), the biggest difference is I’ll have longer projects, and you’ll have to wait for them (though if I’m honest I will likely still post a shorter fic here and there lol).
I appreciate the patience a lot of you have already shown me this year, what with my random breaks and gaps between posting. you have all been so so kind and generous with your praise and I wouldn’t be here, writing and sharing, without that support. I love you all and wish you well going into the new year!!!!!

The Prince of Thieves (new and improved) - looking for readers!
Tumblr media
For the last few months, I've been working on editing The Prince of Thieves, a story novel which was originally published on Tumblr and ao3 between October 2022 and June 2023. As I work through the last few chapters and prepare to write the new opening, I thought I'd put out some feelers...
By the end of this month (hopefully), I'll be seeking feedback on this manuscript!
I would love to connect with folks who are:
okay with whump (I would never call my writing gory, but there is LOTS of angst, captivity and restraints, hopelessness, torture, illness and bodily injury)
comfortable giving honest feedback on the characters and story
willing to point out any particularly egregious typos once in a while if/when you spot them
fine with it being pretty. uh. long. let's ballpark 150k? will give a final word count when it's done.
able to use Google Docs or Microsoft Word
able to provide feedback by ***February 29, 2024
***If I take too long to finish editing, this date will get moved back, of course. :)

Details below the read more!
Tumblr media
Here's the silly tongue-in-cheek blurb:
guy and gal get arrested and tormented by super cool, totally normal constable while pals on the outside freak out and make bad decisions; fun 1800s prison vibes with a side helping of angst and chosen family
Tumblr media
Below is a more blurb-y blurb:
The goal of Iustitia aecum, the notorious thieving gang, is to steal from the rich and give to the poor. For a few years, that’s exactly what Jamie, Will, Colette, and Geoff (as the gang’s inner circle) do; they slip through the fingers of the law time and time again.
One day, everything goes wrong.
Will, by a stroke of fateful misfortune, falls into a trap meant for Jamie, the real leader of IA, and ends up in prison—in the custody of Constable Baden Hatchett, an officer who is willing to do whatever it takes to get Will to crack so he can bust IA and bring all its members to justice.
With execution—his brother’s and his own—hanging over his head, Will resolves to take his secrets to the grave, swearing not to betray the only family he has left.
Bree Cooper is one of IA’s runners, privy to no secrets save for one she learned by chance…that she was never supposed to know. When she, too, falls into the hands of the constabulary, she is forced to reckon with her past (a complicated history with Constable Hatchett himself) and her future (the gallows).
Will and Bree’s lives were already intertwined, and when they find each other again behind bars, they will rewrite the stories fate has planned for them—together.
Tumblr media
Genre: drama, historical/period piece, whump / POV: 1st-person most of the time, 3rd-person for flashbacks / Narrators: multiple (5 of 'em)
sneak peek to see if the style is for you:
It’s cold up here on the roof of the boarding house—that’s why no one else is up here, probably—but there’s something delightfully bracing about the wind scrubbing the day’s dust from my skin while the stars gaze down. It’s delicious, almost wicked, to peer into the city streets from so high. Up here, no one else can see me. Up here, no one can say a damn thing when I pull up my sleeves. There’s no one to gasp or gawk as I reveal the soft, scandalous flesh of my arms and trace my fingers along, throwing into sharp relief what must remain invisible at all other times: black-as-night ink painted on the canvas of my skin. It’s a shame the tattoo would send me to prison if the constables saw it, because it’s beautiful. Sometimes I just stare down at the details—the leaves bursting from a tree in full bloom, the ring around its swirling, entwined roots. Would anyone else, other than my fellow runners or the constabulary, know what it means if they caught a glimpse? I’m not so sure, but they’d certainly be confused if they saw it on my arm. Silas Cooper’s daughter, tattooed like a common criminal? A gentlewoman like her? How? Why? What happened? I scowl into the night. Breanna Cooper died with Silas, or at least I like to think she did. When I think back on the girl who stumbled, dry-eyed, away from her father’s deathbed and then ran from the man she was supposed to marry, out into a chilly autumn night much like the one I’m gazing into now, I don’t recognize her—don’t recognize myself. That girl ran into a life of nothing, yes. But isn’t that also what she ran away from?

My Phic Phight 2024 Wrapped
This event put me at 95 Danny Phantom works on AO3, and 180 total works. I wrote 32 complete fics this month, and 5 unfinished drafts.
I wrote 147,631 words, making me less than 3k shy of my original goal of 150k words—which, I'll be honest, is a lot better than I was actually expecting to do. I also wrote for a total of 61 different prompts, including every prompt involving Wes Weston (excepting the one I submitted myself).
I finished with the second highest word count of all Phic Phight participants, the highest word count on team human, the most fics started of all participants, and as one of the top 5 commenters on my team (4th), and top 10 commenters overall (9th). My team (Team Human) got second place 1,826 points behind Team Ghost.
Seven total fics were written for my four prompts, and only one of them was by me.
All in all, I'm very happy with my results this year. It would have been nice if my team could have won, but it was a super close race the whole month, and we gave it a good fight and did out best, but we just couldn't pull out the win in the end.

My Year in Writing, 2023
And this is another situation where I wish I could pull up last year's post to use as a pattern, but I can't because my writing blog got deleted, so I'm feeling a little lost.
But I can at least see the graphs I made last year in my writing progress tracking spreadsheet, so that give me a bit of a hint as to what I would normally post here.
I wrote 183,465 words on 2023. It's my third year in a row of increases (thank you, Julie and the Phantoms!) and my first year over 150k, which was my goal for the year. I'm at 856,124 words since 2017.
Tumblr media
I'm also super excited about winning NaNo for the first time since 2017. November was my most productive month, followed by February, when I spent most of the month working on Baby, This Rain Changes Everything, which I guess I was just excited about because I had a lot of 1k+ days.
Part of the 44k increase from 2022-2023 was due to NaNo, but I also increased my average daily word count for non-NaNo months from 291.8 to 387.5. And I do write every day--December 31 was day 2,395 of my write-ever-day streak.
Tumblr media
What I Wrote
Other than 2% of my words for the year for Garfield, a Teen Wolf Movie fix-it fic, everything else was for Julie and the Phantoms: 81% on various scenes for Electric Boogaloo, 12% for Baby, This Rain Changes Everything, and 5% on two different AU fics that I may convert to original fiction instead.

Plans for 2024
So, the saying goes something like, "Write a million words, throw them away, now you're ready to be a writer." I didn't realize it until I was writing this up, but I'm going to hit a million words next year.
And I have to admit, in the last few months, I've started to think about writing and publishing original fiction. And that's partly because the JatP fandom is dying--I'd think the drop in kudos was because I suck, but I've seen declining kudos for new fic by big name fans, too, so it's not just me. No judgement on the fandom, it's just the nature of things. I've left a couple of fandoms myself because of a new hyperfixation. But at the same time, I had this AU idea in the spring, and thought to myself, are you really going to write a whole novel-length fic for 20 kudos?
I think I'd rather earn a couple hundred bucks instead, which seems like about what I would net if I self-pub. And I'm poor, so any little bit helps. Plus, I don't know, I just feel ready. It's partly because I read some pretty bad books this year, and it's like, OK, this got published, and in one case it got optioned and made into a TV show, and I feel like I can do better.
So, my plan for 2024 is:
Write the last ~9 scenes for Electric Boogaloo.
Write season 3, AKA the Electric Boogaloo sequel. Boogaloo is probably going to reach somewhere around 300k total, but I'm aiming for something more like 150k-200k for the sequel.
Finish the two Arrow fics I still can't give up on, even though I haven't worked on them in years. One just needs another 2k, and the other maybe 15k.
Transition to original fiction, taking the idea I had for a JatP boy band AU and "filing off the serial numbers" as I go. (Or something else--who knows what I'll be most interested next fall!)
In terms of word count goals:
I want to hit 50,000 for NaNo in November. For April and July Camp NaNos, I want to write 1,000 a day, so 30k and 31k.
I want to take it somewhat easy in the three months after NaNo events, so May, August, and December - 600/day, or 18,600 words/month.
For the other six months out of the year, I'm going to try doing "NaNoWriWeek" or 1,667 words/day for the first week of the month and then 600/day for the rest of the month, which will get me around 25k per month.
All of this totals up to about 300,000 words.

It may be February now but I've been pondering what I want to have done this year so I'm gonna post some goals I have. Then I can check back at the end of the year and see what I've accomplished!
For reference: In 2023 I posted 78,514 words of fics on AO3. My longest fic is Iron and Ichor at 42,180, the majority of my fics are around 1k words. I have 3 dsmp fics, 1 origins fic, 13 hc fics and 20 sekai fics.
2024 Goals:
Write longer fics
Write multichapter fics
Reach 100k words on AO3
Write for 3 new fandoms
Reach 150k words on AO3
Continue The Folly Of Man
Finish one original work
Finish planning for two original works
Participate in NaNoWriMo
Rambling about my goals under the cut :3
For the longer and multichapter fics I want to have more practice for my original works. I like the stuff I write now, but I think it would be nice to get a better feel for more conflicts and where to give a good end to chapters. I think what I tend to write is mostly just one scene I thought was fun so I'd like to build on that.
I have a doc with a ton of fic ideas and there's some fandoms I haven't written anything for in there. I figure adding 3 to my fandom list will make me get through more of my ideas. I also have a couple of crossover fics I want to write that should be fun (and longer).
I think it would be cool to double my AO3 word count. Personally, I like having a very achievable goal alongside a harder one so that I get a midpoint to feel proud of - hence the 100k and 150k both being on there. I think this also goes well with writing longer fics and will encourage me to work on longer projects. They may take more time but they'll add a lot towards my goal!
I haven't worked on the Folly of Man in a while but I do want to continue it! I have a brainstorm for a sequel, I just haven't gotten it to the like,,, outlining/writing phase quite yet.
Speaking of brainstorming - I'm in the midst of brainstorming for a few original works right now. I have two main ones I've made a decent bit of headway on and a third that is still pretty hazy to me, but very personal that I'd like to get work done on. I want to have one of these fully written this year, but I want to have at least two finished with planning so that if I want, I can partake in NaNo with a project! I think I'll end up posting some snippets of my original stuff here when I have some stuff written that I'm proud of.
For the most part, I think all of this is super doable! They generally overlap enough that any fanfic writing will feel good as it's contributing to my writing goals (and also I just love writing fics <3). The hardest thing for me is taking my bigger ideas and breaking them down into something real that I can actually write. A lot of my big projects (original and Folly of Man) are like,,, very hazy and conceptual in my brain. So it takes me a while to figure out how to put them into words. I think all of my goals come down to figuring that out and bringing more things into reality :3

Tagging a post "unannounced project" is sort of a joke, since all of my projects are unannounced, as is this blog. (I figure I'll link it in the pinned post on my main once I actually publish something. Maybe if I post a Sugarplums update. If you found it before then, hi! Great job! I'm actually really curious if anyone will; feel free to send an ask saying hi or follow.)
For the curious, my notable fiction projects (none of which are done at the time of posting) are:
Caramel/Sugarplums, a fanfic about some of my Guild Wars 2 characters that I started writing in 2015 and wrote some more of in 2018. I joke to myself that it's a tradition to work on it in October, as I originally had a goal of publishing it on halloween (in both years). I have more of it that's unedited from the 2018 writing session, and I do plan on finishing it.... so maybe look out around halloween 2024?
This one is easily my best work. Reading it is almost like an out-of-body experience for me because I mostly don't remember writing it but it's written just the way I like.
As with all of my fiction pieces, I came up with one single-sentence description of an event that I wanted to describe, then went 50 layers deep into the backstory and haven't gotten to the event in question yet.
Working title: Camp Avana, an original fiction work that I started in June 2022 and did the NaNoWriMo-equivalent 50k words on in the next 30 days, then slowed down on quite a bit but am trying to keep working on. I sort of intentionally treated this as practice: I want to get used to things like doing an extended project, making plans for the plot and sticking to or adjusting them, revising and being willing to throw things out, etc, so I specifically decided not to focus on trying to make this one perfect... or even good. I do really like significant parts of it, but the flaws I already knew are there are definitely there (like... not having a plot), and I don't know that it'll ever be something I recommend anyone else read, per se. But, who knows! I do really like it.
My longest project by far, of course. With my current plans it will be like 150k words and nothing of substance will happen in any of them. Maybe someone will find it relaxing?
Oh, and I made this blog so that I could start tagging posts with references to this piece despite the fact that no one has ever read it yet and so no one would have any idea what I was talking about. Tagging things for your OCs is its own reward.
untitled adult fiction project that I won't go into detail on because... well, yeah. This one is actually from before Camp Avana and I've written more than 3x as many words on it as Caramel and Sugarplums combined, so until recently it was technically true to say that, by word count, very possibly the majority of my fiction writing experience was explicit. Thank god that's no longer true.
This one is mostly notable because I wrote it on my phone, and I actually tried changing that and realized that I can't write in the same style on a phone screen and a laptop keyboard, so for consistency I had to keep writing it on the phone. (If I finish it I'll edit it on a laptop, of course.)
To be completely honest, for what it is I honestly think this one could pretty good with some serious editing, but if I ever post it publicly it's not gonna be on this blog.
"unannounced project": Not a real WIP, but I just counted them up and I have 2500(!) words of design notes for the setting of this hypothetical fantasy story. I probably don't intend to post them because I really like setting-based surprises in fiction and if I ever do figure out a plot and characters and write the story, I'd want to reserve the ability to surprise people with some of the details as they read it.
edit: yay more stuff to add!
see the thorn twist in your side, a notes document for writing down a dream fragment I had that immediately went extremely off the rails and became a personal challenge to see if I can write melodrama and angst. I may change the title, I dunno, but it felt like it deserved one of those loosely related song lyric titles that everyone does for their cool edgy fanfic.

New year fanfic asks -- 5, 6, and the bonus.
5. Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?
The Pages In Between! It’s been languishing in my drafts since November and I really need to just suck it up and finish the last chapter.
Snippet:
“Mr. Gold,” Regina said with surprise, swanning down her grand staircase to meet him. She was in one of her typical elaborate get ups, a sweeping crimson gown with an Elizabethan neckline, covered in delicate rhinestone hearts. Perched on top of her head was a tiara inlaid with what he suspected to be real rubies. A Queen of Hearts he imagined. He hadn’t attended one of these parties in years but it seemed Regina was still working her way through every possible villain in the Disney canon for costume inspiration.
She gawked at him, taking in his short hair, eyes sweeping over his costume.
“What an unexpected pleasure. I had no idea you were planning to attend my little get together.”
“It was a last minute decision,” he said.
“And so festive too,” Regina said, with a little shrug of her shoulder. “What ever has inspired this burst of holiday spirit?”
“I have been known to leave my shop on occasion,” he said, his voice bored.
“Yes, but it usually takes something precious to entice you away.”
Gold ignored her glancing past the staircase into the ballroom where people were milling about
“If you’re looking for our new librarian, I haven’t seen her,” Regina said, and his eyes snapped back to her.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Regina gave a roll of her eyes, fanning herself with her heart shaped fan. “Oh don’t play coy,” she said. “Everyone in town has seen the way you look at the poor girl. Do me a favor and don’t scare her off. People are expecting that library to open and I don’t want to delay things by going through the whole hiring process again.”
6. Which yet-to-be-started fic is first on your list?
I’ve got that half formed Demon Rumple/Angel Belle fic I mean to work on. But honestly, my RBB fic because I’ve done like nothing with it and I’m staring down the barrel of that deadline.
BONUS QUESTION FOR DECEMBER 2018 — if you answered questions from this list last year, find your answers and compare your 2018 goals to your results. How’d you do?
Alright. I said I wanted to write more Rushacey which…I didn’t really. I started a Rushacey fake dating AU that never got past three chapters and everyone has probably forgotten. I set my word count goal at 150K words and I’m almost there. And another year passed without me finishing Purgatory so maybe I should stop ever making any predictions where that story is involved. It gets one yearly update and we’ll be here until at least 2024.
