friend wanted to see my tumblr, and when i told him i can’t show it to him bc it’s basically my personal diary he went “oh so I can’t see it but a bunch of strangers on tumblr can??” he literally does not get me. no one will get me like the people in my phone get me
#It’s just so different#even though it’s public it still feels secret and safe. i feel comfy sharing a lot more on here than I do in my actual day to day life lol#in my head I’m also just speaking to myself 90% of the time which helps#if a friend off tumblr saw my thoughts I’d feel so weird ab it#esp bc they might get the vagueposting about certain situations and tell mutual friends#no thank u. this is for me. I’m not about to start censoring my thoughts bc someone I know knows my tumblr#u guys literally saw me have LIVE BREAKDOWNS#meanwhile I’ll have the worst fucking day in history and tell no one about it. I’m already cripplingly private but way more so in real life#this is basically a low stress journaling outlet for me. it’s so important for me to maintain the separation#like this is actually my diary & has been so handy for letting out emotions / articulating thoughts / staying on track !!#& I’ve met so many kind people on here who actually get me. which is so hard to find irl bc I’m surrounded by pre-med gunners/overachievers#who are by standard not very good w emotion & can be competitive/judgmental. or at least it’s hard for me to be vulnerable in front of them#and I’m part of that crowd so I reserve my emotions only to a handful of very close friends#it’s nice to hop on here and express negative emotions!! or positive emotions!! just whatever I want and it’s low stress and people get me#I don’t have to worry about judgment or competitiveness etc etc#like everyone on here is so kind & nice & understanding. & just a breath of fresh air from the types I run w. it’s just nice to have this#so idk that’s why I think I’ll always be strict about keeping the worlds separate. it just works#p

“How is Paris?”
Hello readers! Welcome to my blog. I’ve been meaning to write a blog for some time now, really since my days in Chicago, but I never felt this urge until now. Currently I feel like I am being tested to my limits and I have so many thoughts about so many different things. Writing has always been an outlet of mine (have kept journals since I learned how to hold a pen basically) and so here it is - a window of insight into my thoughts about a variety of different things.
I don’t really have a theme for this blog, but I know it will touch on issues that are important to me: race, activism, Japanese American and Asian American identity, feminism, mental health, radical politics, etc. Given that I’m currently also in France with the generous help of a Fulbright scholarship (a lot will be discussed soon about this), my posts may be more focused on my current experience in France and how I have been navigating this foreign country.
So, to start, many people have been asking me how Paris has been. There is some sort of illusory expectation that people have of my time here in Paris - that I’m happily eating baguettes every day (I am not -- I eat only rice and noodles), that I’m picnicking by the Seine, and I’m going to all these cool art galleries and museums on the daily.
This could be farther from the truth.
I am struggling.
This is not the same experience that I had studying abroad through UChicago three years ago, where I took classes in English taught by UChicago professors at the UChicago Center in Paris with UChicago classmates. I had a huge safety net while I was here, which enabled me to go out and explore the city and meet new locals while still feeling rooted to a community of American students. I didn’t need to get a visa because I was here for less than 90 days, the housing situation was largely taken care of by the study abroad coordinator, and I was used to the UChicago pedagogy. The huge difference here is that I am going to grad school in Paris, working towards a professional degree, which entails a large degree of responsibility, self-reliance and resilience.
However, this past month has been incredibly difficult for me. The workload is intense, unlike anything I saw in my quarters with the heaviest workloads at UChicago. I am taking eight classes that meet once a week. For one of my core classes, I must read four books for the midterm, which is less than a month away. Work is always on the back of my mind and I fear that I may miss an assignment.  There is rarely any time to be resting or relaxing, because I tell myself, well you could be using this time to study.
As someone prone to anxiety, the workload and the added stress of being in a new country has taken quite a toll on me. There have been days where it has been hard to get out of bed and days where I feel like I’m just dragging throughout the day. Sometimes I wonder, “is this program worth it? Should I drop out?” but am quickly reminded that if I do, I lose my Fulbright scholarship. Additionally, Sciences Po is not the friendliest when it comes to their students’ mental health - their psychological services are minimal, and they fail you if you miss more than 2 classes (yes, attendance is taken in even the biggest of lecture classes.) I could go on and on about Sciences Po as an institution, but I can save that for another post. I have had to resume sessions with my therapist in Chicago because the French national healthcare system does not cover therapy services!
Despite all this, I’ve managed to find small pockets of joy during my time here and have really forced myself to practice self-care. One could say that my most recent FB status asking for self-practice tips was a cry for help - surely I couldn’t be the only one who has gone through this. So here’s what has been working for me so far - and you don’t have to be in grad school either to abide by them!
1. Rely on your family and friend networks back home
Thank god for technology - I remember my dad telling me that when he was in college he had to wait in line in his dorm to use the landline to call his parents. I can’t even imagine how my mother kept in touch with her family back in Japan when she immigrated to the US (will write another post on my newfound appreciation for my mom as I transition to life here.)
That being said, I text regularly with my friends and keep them updated about what’s going on in my life. Some others are also living abroad and it’s nice to know that we have each other’s backs -- one of my dear friends is doing her JET program in rural Kumamoto. She is 7 hours ahead of me, and always texts me a nice meme or a cute gif that I have the honor of waking up to. Last night I felt especially horrible and called one of my friends (who is going to start her master’s in philosophy at Oxford and we’ll be reunited soon!) who helped me calm down. As people starting new lives in new countries we often forget that we have a support system back home, but don’t forget - they helped to get you where you are.
2. Read books that nurture your soul
I have always loved to read in order to learn new perspectives, but reading now serves a different purpose: it touches and nurtures my soul. When I first got here, I devoured Ruth Ozeki’s novel A Tale for the Time Being - it was a charming and quirky story that whisked me away to British Columbia/Tokyo. I didn’t know how much I needed it at the time. Currently I’m reading a sociology book called Redefining Japaneseness: Japanese Americans and the Ancestral Homeland, which is so comforting and keeps me super rooted to my own identity.
I was pretty strategic when packing books and spent a good hour deciding which books to bring with me. I knew that I would be reading a lot of dry public policy and urban theory (I even discussed with my roommate, also an American woman of color, which books we would both bring should we want to borrow from each other’s shelves.) So I brought with me Matthew Desmond’s Evicted (which, luckily enough for me, I ended up having to write a paper on), Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction; Keeanga Yamahtta-Taylor’s From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, and Louise Erdrich’s The Round House (Erdrich is a Native American fiction writer who writes heavily on Native American issues.) I’ve found that conversations surrounding racial justice are quite lacking in French academic discourse, so these books help to fill that gap in my life. In addition, I brought with me some Japanese language books, including ”コンビニ人間” and “君たちはどう生きるか” to practice my Japanese, because I don’t have access to Japanese TV anymore.
3. Keep yourself intellectually accountable
One of the best pieces of advice I received from the director of the Humanity in Action fellowship I did this past summer was to keep yourself accountable by writing down your own thoughts and critiques of grad school readings in the margins when taking notes. I’ve found that a lot of the readings we are assigned take on a very neoliberal approach to cities and urbanism, and I am incredibly cynical. Sometimes, I just downright disagree. And instead of feeling exasperated by the content, I write down my critiques and will try to bring them up in class, sometimes daring to bring them up with the professor during lectures. This is how I try to stay engaged.
4. Travel!
Paris is pretty accessible to many other European countries by plane and train. In fact, just last weekend I was in Madrid visiting a few friends. I was not feeling my best and and even now I still feel awful for my low energy and that I was not as cheery as I hoped to be - but being around people you already know is comforting. In fact, I had a chance to reconnect with a friend from college who is a current Fulbright ETA in Madrid, who told me that he was feeling the same way as me during the same time last year. Knowing that other people have gone through the same motions while transitioning to life abroad makes you feel less alone.
All in all, to those of you reading, I’m sorry if I have disappointed you with this blog post. However, I do think I need to be honest about my experience here and share with other folks who may be thinking about studying abroad. If anything, I am giving myself all the time I need to breathe, go through the motions, and eventually settle in. This will be a long process, but I am trying to be patient with myself.
I cannot end this post without acknowledging the people who have been there for me. I’d like to extend a thank you to Keilyn, Sarah, Elisabeth, Gino, Crystal, Brenna, Shirley, Joe, and Amanda. And to my new friends at Sciences Po, I am looking forward to getting to know you and let’s finish this semester strong :)
Okay and now some photos!

Pause.
So I definitely took a long pause from the ‘real world’ today after school. I feel sort of bad for wasting so many hours stuck in the internet realm, but it was what I wanted to do. I came home in a big mood to relax, which I am positive is due to waking up at 6am after not having to wake up early this weekend. Although I usually maintain an early rising schedule, even on weekends.
Anywho, last night the idea of blogging really started to work on me and I got so excited thinking about things that I could barely go to sleep. I woke up this morning, in a great mood, with the mindset to start generating ideas for a blog. I went through my normal routine before school and was actually early for the bus today, how nice. When I got to school I ripped out my journal from my book bag and began writing about the idea of blogging from the previous night and also the thoughts going through my head after listening to, yet another, podcast from Amanda Seales.
The topic of her podcast today was ‘Side effects of being a Multi hyphenate’, which is basically someone who is multi-skilled or multi professional. She then went on to compare it to people she labeled as ‘dabblers’, people who have some skill in multiple things but never fully commit or go through with these topics/subjects. As she spoke straight facts about this topic, I began to reflect and take a hard look at myself. What am I actually good at? Is it more than one thing? Yes. Okay, but I see myself more as a ‘dabbler’ because I’m never really putting a lot of devotion into these hobbies/skills/interests.
Then I began to try and think about the activities that could possibly be a profession that I have committed a good amount of time to in my life and felt fulfilled while doing the work. I came up with the following: acting, singing/music, writing and fashion. For pretty much my entire life I’ve always known I wanted to have some type of career within the arts. For a long time I wanted to be a singer & then that transitioned into acting. However, over the last few years I have kind of taken a hiatus from acting and have began to feel out of touch with that side of me.
When I first moved to D.C. I searched for and began acting courses in the city and stopped after a year. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it ! The school I went to was very nice, and had a great sense of community, no snobby feeling whatsoever. But as I started to work more and more & began to love my job more, I lost the drive to do both things at once. So I decided to put my acting classes on hold. Since taking that break, which has been roughly a year now, I kept telling myself (and other people) that I just didn’t feel the passion or that it was meant for me anymore. I can say that in this moment, it is still a very wishy washy feeling for me. I really have always felt so right for acting and have had so many people tell me and show me that I am worthy of being an actress. I guess since I pulled myself out of it and never really had another outlet for that energy & passion that it sort of dimmed it’s light. And that is yet another thing Amanda was talking about, how sometimes when you’re a ‘Multi hyphenate’ you have to pick and choose when to focus on what and for how long. But its not like you’re neglecting all of the other things you are passionate about, you just feel when its the right time to put more energy towards something.
Same goes for writing. When I was younger I won a city wide writing competition during Elementary school, and I’ll never forget how wonderful that made me feel. I can still feel the sense of pride and fulfillment that the award gave me, and although I can’t remember word for word what I wrote, I remember the impact that it had on my teachers. A few years down the road I remember one summer I just decided to lay in my cherry red bunkbed and write a short story, just to do it. My memory of that one is pretty vague as well, sadly, but I still can bring myself back to that moment in time and picture myself clearly as I filled the page with my imagination.
As time had went on, remembering how much I always enjoyed English and Literature classes, I always found pleasure when I had essays or writing assignments for homework, especially when it was a topic of choice or that I could find relation with. As years passed my focus and energy shifted to other extracurricular activities such as soccer, dance, and of course acting. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that I started to really get back into writing and finally realized the importance of carrying a journal. Not only does it bring me peace and help relieve stress, but its pumping the fuel of writing more and more back into my fingers, and these recent ‘blogs’ on here have been a prime example.
The idea of a blog is definitely something that I would like to attempt. But at the moment I am dealing with slight disappointment due to the fact that I have to pay to have a blog. Which I’m not arguing with the fact that I do, its just being without a job and a steady income has got my bank account very dry and constantly low. So even if the fee was only 3 dollars a month, its still cutting it too close. I literally average about 20 dollars every week or so in my bank account thanks to my dad. I try very hard not to touch my money when it hits that low because there are other fees that are constantly robbing me of my last 20 dollars, and I just don’t want to have to worry about more than I already am. But I’m also yelling at myself in my head because I feel like I’m just making excuses, but then I rethink it and I’m really not. So I guess its just going to have to be on here for the next couple of months until I get back home.

15 Ideas for Relieving Stress During Coronavirus Quarantine via @searchmastergen
We’re certainly living in strange times. While a global pandemic sweeps through our nation – and across the world – there is plenty to feel stressed about. People are losing their jobs. Parents are forced to find a way to have their child taken care of in response to mandatory school closing. Most terrifyingly, the weak and elderly – our grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and lifelong friends – are all very much at risk of being gravely affected by COVID-19, the novel coronavirus. Oh, yeah. We’re all confined to our homes for the most part, too. There is no shortage of stress-inducing realities that we are all facing, and it’s looking like this will be the case for the foreseeable future, at the very least. So, it’s time to explore some easy stress relievers while we are locked in our homes with limited human contact in an effort to keep our shit together, our attitudes positive, and our outlook on each day better than the day before.
Stress Relievers in Times of High Anxiety
There are the easy answers:
Home workouts.
Reading good books.
Walks outside in fresh air (while keeping your minimum 6-foot distance from others).
Online shopping.
These are some of the more common alternatives to losing your mind on accelerate. And they make sense. Working out is scientifically proven to naturally reduce stress through the release of endorphins and other chemical responses. Reading helps get the creative juices flowing. Fresh air is always good for the mind and body, too. But what about some other basic, not-so-common outlets for stress and anxiety in these strange times?
1. Take it Slow
Most important thing for us anxious, oft-worried people is to just take is slow. Deep breaths and relaxation remain unrivaled. But it’s easier said than done. Anyone with real anxiety knows that. Just never turn your back on the basics. The faster we realize we need to gain control to handle what comes at us, the easier everything else becomes. Remember to take it slow and think of the big picture. We’ve made it this far and we’re living in a big world. Appreciate it for what it is. More often than not, everything falls into place.
2. Less Coffee If You’re Like Me Right Now
For the naturally anxious and occasionally uncontrollable personalities, like me, less coffee can be better. I need at least a couple of cups to get going in the morning, especially on Mondays. Also, I have found myself four (or more) cups deep before noon due to working from home – and making coffee by the pot. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and anxious in these uncertain times. But I try to help myself stay grounded by regulating just how much caffeine I put into my body, especially when my total daily movement is at an all-time low. A cup or two is all most of us need for the day. Move onto water at some point. Then keep your focus once you’re awake and working at a pace that works for you. Don’t just keep drinking coffee until you’ve got the shakes and are about to explode. (Yes, I speak from experience!)
3. Take Breaks from Watching the News
We all want to stay up to date on the current situation to ensure we have the facts and know what we can truly expect. But there has to be a saturation point. As a news junkie myself, I typically watch hours of news each day. In these trying times, that’s probably not the healthiest choice. I’ve reduced my news-watching time significantly, mostly saving my viewing for the morning and evening news telecasts only. The mess on Facebook is a much different story. Sure, there can be good information on the social media platform, and it’s usually nice to have that human exposure – albeit virtually – but, we all know far too well, there’s a lot of crap on Facebook, too. Just like we manage our time watching the news, we need to manage our time on platforms like Facebook. Honestly, I have zero interest in having real-life contact with several of my “friends” on Facebook  anytime soon. I also wonder why so many people never paid attention in ninth-grade library class (nor understand credibility, proper sourcing, etc.). No matter how you slice it, we need to manage and regulate our exposure to the outside madness when it comes to the news media and social media platforms.
4. Take a Trip on Foot (With or Without the Dog)
This is an easy one. And it’s a good one. There are a lot of things we are currently not allowed to do. Thankfully, walking outside is not one of them. So long as we keep our 6-foot distance from others, we are more than welcomed to get outside, get some fresh air while we take a quick run or walk the dog, and simply get in touch with the basics of life. Highly recommend.
5. Clean the House
If you’re like me, working in chaos is second nature. But working in a mess is a nightmare. And that, my friends, is one of the biggest dilemmas for working from home, at least for me. I find it hard to get in the zone if I’m sitting among dirty dishes, clothes that need to be put away, and piles of unnecessary toys that my 3-year-old leaves laying around always. So, I pick them up. I’m a lucky one in that cleaning is therapeutic to me. So, this helps in a multitude of ways. But the biggest factor here is the mental satisfaction I get from having a home (and temporary office) that is clean and tidy. It’s just one more way to eliminate unnecessary stress.
6. Talk to Friends & Family
As we now know, social distancing is not easy. It’s a fun joke or punchline when we bail on our friends (maybe even several times) to claim that we just want to be home alone in our pajamas. But being forced to stay in our homes and overthinking everything we touch for the small periods we actually leave (at the grocery store, gas station, bank, etc.) is no way to navigate life. We need to keep communicating with the outside world while we can, too. As mentioned, social networks help with this drastically. But there is plenty of toxicity out there that needs to be waded through as well. I’ve had several meetups with friends and/or coworkers since the 100 percent work-from-home mandate for non-essential employees in New York. And, while I still don’t think I am nearly as pretty as my mom pretended I was growing up (which became even more evident after staring at myself in the webcam during the meetups), this is definitely a fun and unique way to pass the time and stay somewhat normal. Zoom is easy to use, has some fun options for things like virtual backgrounds, and it’s free. We may not see these people (in person) for a couple more weeks, but we can connect with them in some capacity and keep things familiar with relative ease.
7. Start a Journal
As a journalist at heart, this is a no-brainer for me. But, like most of these alternatives, what works for me may not work for others. I’m just trying to provide some ideas; take what you’d like and modify as needed. I typically don’t keep a journal or diary, but when I do revisit old notes from certain periods of my life, I’m always intrigued. To be able to look back at a period of life and recite your thoughts is a strong, impactful way to remember the past. Pictures are great, but written dialogue (especially when written and read by the same person) has incredible power. It also offers some peace of mind and sanity. It’s almost like I’m visiting my shrink through handwriting at home.
8. Meditate
I don’t personally meditate, but many friends and coworkers do, and swear by it. It’s on the list of things I will certainly explore during this strange time. But meditation, along with breathing and mental-awareness exercises, are sure winners as ways to reduce stress by definition.
9. Try Something New
While many of us may be reluctant to break from what we already know we enjoy, now is also an ideal time to try some new things. Many of us will try some new programs on Netflix, maybe teach ourselves a new valuable skill, perhaps even cook up a new dish or two as we explore self-entertaining. It doesn’t hurt to try new things. Some of the new things I plan to do to keep my cool throughout quarantine are meditation, learn some coding skills, and definitely cooking things I never have before. I will be trying some new shows on Netflix, too.
10. Indulge in Satisfaction… But Work Toward It as a Reward
Another big one that seems pretty easy but may be overlooked is rewarding yourself with some of the finer things in life. A lot of us have been joking on social media about how we are going to be fat after this quarantining period is over with. And I’m not saying it’s wrong. Staying sane for the next few weeks may come with a few extra pounds when we are allowed to come out of our houses. I’ll take it. Some of my favorite “rewards” are ice cream, chocolate, Swedish Fish – even non-edibles like video games and other time-out pleasurables that help us feel good but should probably be indulged in at a regulated pace. Some of us also enjoy alcoholic beverages. Nothing wrong with that. I’ve just found it best to keep myself restricted to having my first drink until after 4 p.m. when my workday ends at 5 (officially). That time has since moved up to 3 p.m. over the last two days. The important part is just to keep it righteous and don’t do more harm than good.
11. Catch Up With Yourself & Life
I have long said that I need 36 hours in a day to get even half of the things done I would like to in one day. Life moves fast. I tend to, too. But this mandatory slow-down time – if you’re lucky enough to still have a job, be able to work from home, and are in good health – has allowed me to get a lot of my messy life elements in order. I’ve caught up on my mail. My house is clean. My laundry is done. There is something to be said for having order in life that helps with a positive outlook. And, for work, I am catching up on time-consuming tasks that would otherwise probably not get done anytime soon.
12. Don’t Work on the Same Thing Too Long
I’m extremely productive when I work from home. I also tend to go crazy a lot faster. Something I have found useful is the ability to shift gears regularly, or as needed. Same for when working in the office. If you’re able/don’t mind it, change up gears and put down a 3,000-cell Excel spreadsheet to take on a task or two that are easier. Maybe grab lunch, too. Come back and hammer out the spreadsheet for a couple of hours. Everybody loves a slight change of scenery, especially now.
13. Enjoy a Hobby – Any Way Possible
Face it. We don’t get enough time to enjoy the things we love. Even if we actually do. We’ll say we don’t. That’s why they are the things we love! In this period of social distancing, doing more of what we love is critical. Most of us have hobbies we like but just don’t get to do as much as we’d like. It could be painting, drawing, knitting, writing, reading, making music, or a million other things. Whatever you enjoy and makes you happy is the right answer here.
14. Sharpen Your Skillset
We live in a world where knowledge is very much available, and usually for free. And knowledge is power. Been meaning to teach yourself how to code? How to play the guitar? Learn a new language? Now is the time. There are plenty of free platforms out there to learn code, including Codecademy and a myriad of YouTube resources. Fender is giving away three months of free guitar lessons in this time of quarantine. Duolingo is a dependable easy-to-use free resource for learning a new language, too. Heck, maybe you’ve been meaning to read (and master) Kamasutra. Now’s the time.
15. Create
Weird situations like the coronavirus-created life shutdown are rare, but they’re real. We don’t have much choice in the matter. What we do with our time is important, for our sanity, but also for our production. I can confidently say that I’ve been working more efficiently than usual on my regular day-to-day tasks, but I also feel privileged to be lucky enough to have a job with flexibility, good teammates, and good clients. Outside of my regular eight to 10 hours of work per day, I’ve explored other ways to occupy my time and aren’t coming out of my TV but also help keep the stress down. Working on a book I’ve put on far too long, catching up on old episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy”, and re-organizing my filing cabinet are three things I’ve put time into so far in quarantine, and all have helped regulate my stress.
Do What Works for You
Some things work for some people and others work for other people. The important thing to remember is not everything works the same for everyone. Finding what works well for you is one of, if not the, most important element to keeping your mind right in these times. There are many uncertainties that exist in this unsure time. One thing we all certainly need is to keep our cool. More Resources:

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Chris waters of Constructed Adventures, a brand that sells seemingly serendipitous perfect days. Some stats:Product: Seemingly serendipitous perfect days.Revenue/mo: $5,000Started: December 2015Location: InternationalFounders: 2Employees: 1Hello! Who are you and what business did you start? My name is Chris Waters, I go by “The Architect, and I started Constructed Adventures.Simply put, the goal of Constructed adventures is to create a seemingly serendipitous perfect day for someone. Often times, these days are for special occasions like milestone birthdays or marriage proposals. They usually involve challenges and puzzles (think “escape room around the city”) but they’re always custom tailored to a specific person and location.I charge a flat rate for adventures. Between the adventures I run and the consultation clients I’ve added, my profit should be around 60k in 2019. It’s easy to gauge because I’m already completely booked for the rest of the year and into early 2020!The most important thing for me is the freedom and flexibility. I don’t have a home and travel from one adventure location to the next. With all the money saved, I spend my downtime traveling to amazing locations or visiting friends and family!imageWhat's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?I was always that guy trying to create a fun experience for people. I hated the idea of waking up and knowing EXACTLY how the day is going to pan out (drive to work, meeting, lunch, get yelled at by clients, drive home, watch tv, go to bed. Rinse and repeat every day for the rest of your life) So I would be the one kidnapping people on their birthdays, putting googly eyes on every picture in the office, etc.“I hated the idea of waking up and knowing EXACTLY how the day is going to pan out (drive to work, meeting, lunch, get yelled at by clients, drive home, watch tv, go to bed. Rinse and repeat every day for the rest of your life)”The business kind of happened by accident. It all started with the Reddit Secret santa gift exchange. (here’s the wikipedia) In short, 100k people sign up, get matched with someone, and send them a gift for the holidays! I’d been participating for years. I’d sent and received some really incredible gifts. Then 2015 rolled around. I got matched with my giftee. I immediately looked at his location. It was literally 21 minutes away. I had this grand opportunity to do something really fucking cool for an internet stranger. So I started planning. The recommended amount for reddit secret santa is always $20. Some people send $20 gifts. Some people don’t send anything. Some people spend wayyyyyy more. I was one of those people. Frankly, I just kept coming up with cooler and cooler ideas. “What if they open an envelope here and there’s two tickets to the zoo and they need to decode messages on the plaques on animal pens! Then they’ll go to a restaurant where everything has been covered!” It continued like that.imageLuckily at the time, I was making good money as an account manager for a software company and hosting a weekly poker game. I’m not a spectacular poker player, but I’d somehow taken down the game 4-5 weeks in a row. I still joke with my buddies that they financed the start of my business.Anyway, the day of the adventure, I had a bunch of people willing to help put on a big production for an internet stranger. One of them was the boyfriend of a coworker. He was willing to hand deliver the century old suitcase at 8:00am to my giftee. Once my giftee and his girlfriend were at the zoo, I took him to breakfast as a “thank you.”He told me this was a cool thing that people would pay for. He insisted that I start a business and he was going to build me a website. He said “What’s your business name?”“uhhhh...Constructed Adventures?”“Cool, let me see if the URL is available. Yep! Just bought it. Give me a day.”The Reddit gifts adventure ended at this speakeasy bar where I met my giftee and his girlfriend. They were exhausted (In hindsight, I made the day WAY too long) but still blown away. Through our conversation I let him know I’m going to try to do this as a side business.imageA day or two later he posted it to Reddit, it hit the front page, my business page got linked, and the business blew up. The next night, it was all over the local news and I got another huge spike in publicity. Here is the Imgur AlbumI was still working full time but by mid january, Constructed Adventures was booked out through June.imageThis was everything from the first adventureTake us through the process of designing and coming up with your service. The baseline for every adventure is to create a magical experience, but I’ve learned an INSANE amount of lessons and created a pretty in depth set of rules that govern each adventure. For example: One rule is that no stop should ever be longer than 15 minutes travel distance from the previous stop unless it’s an absolute MUST. We watch movies like “National Treasure” where one scene they’re in Washington D.C. and the next scene they’re in New York, but they don’t show the hour plane ride! It’s important to make sure the adventure never stagnates! After every adventure, I tweak everything. My rules, my survey that I send to potential clients, the contract. Everything.I’m always improving.Aside from the few hundred dollars spent on the first adventure, there really wasn’t any other startup cost. The nice thing about events is the client pays a deposit that I use to purchase things. Upon completion of the adventure, I take the final payment. For the first 6 months, I just put all my profit back into the business (buying GoPros, chests, locks, trademarks, etc)About the business today. Potential clients reach out by filling out a form on my website (occasionally people call or email, but 99% of people do the form.) Right now I charge a flat rate which increases the further I book out. After that it’s just whatever the adventure costs (including my lodging and transportation, meals they have on their adventure, actors, etc)In the beginning I charged a flat rate for the entire adventure. This was a poor idea. I learned never to do that again after my first valentines day adventure. I charged $700 for everything. Including a fixed price dinner. Unfortunately they bought multiple bottles of wine and the dinner bill came out to $550. Lesson learned. Now I have an addendum in my contract: If the budget goes over because they went nuts during meals, the client needs to cover it all.My current business model is simple. I build 2-3 adventures a month. My profit on each adventure is around $2,500-3,000 but can get up to $10,000-$20,000 if it’s a massive undertaking. Add consultation packages on top and I’ve got a nice flow of income.Describe the process of launching the business.Oh man, the first website (the one that hit the front page of Reddit, was super barren. It didn’t even have a filled out “about us section”. All the text was still the stock “Lorem Ipsum” that squarespace defaults to.There was 1-2 pictures of the envelopes and boxes from the first adventure and some screenshots from the National Treasure Movie. At the bottom was the from you’d fill out if you wanted to hire me. Honestly though I think it helped. Reddit has this weird distrust of being “gamed” or marketed to. Someone made a comment that this was all an elaborate scheme. The comment below basically said “Look at the website! Does this really look like the work of a crack marketing team?!”After the launch, things just gradually grew. I slowly raised my prices and figured out how to make bigger and better moments! Then in October 2017 (almost 2 years after the start of the business) I quit my full time job to pursue Constructed Adventures. It was a calculated risk. I had money saved and I was starting to get requests from other states. I got featured at the end of a major Podcast called “How I built this” and completely blew up again.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? It was a slow grind. My goal was to stay booked and use that as leverage. As I write this (in early August 2019) I’m completely booked out through February 2020. This came from having my prices low (people still tell me they’re too low, but I don’t mind. I’ve got a great life)But now, it gives me the right to be picky about the people I take as clients! If someone is super aggressive or extremely pushy about the cost, I can just turn them away. My work is stressful enough without having to put up with a nightmare client!I also don’t pay any money for ads. The only marketing money I spend is in December! Every year, I signed up for the Reddit Secret Santa gift exchange, fly to my giftee’s location, and create a completely free adventure just for them. I do it for the publicity, but also because it’s just super fun and a spectacular tradition!Past that, every year I do an AMA on reddit. The two I’ve done have hit the front page. Regarding AMAs, I always recommend being super engaging and super transparent. If you aren’t completely honest with the online masses they’ll eat you alive. But a successful AMA can launch you. Can you guess what day I did my AMA?imagePast that, I’m lucky. My business is super unique. At the risk of sounding arrogant, I have a great origin story. I was a journalism major in college so I know exactly what news outlets want and how to give it to them. I always jump at the occasion to do interviews and talk about my business or methods. Sometimes they lead to nothing, but sometimes they get me a bunch of business. It’s like getting free lotto tickets.TL;DR I’m lucky in that I don’t need any clients and I’m booked very far in advance. Combine that with an openness to talk and a savviness with journalists/reddit and I keep staying relevant. How are you doing today and what does the future look like?Right now, I’m pretty profitable. Still a little room for more but I never want money to dictate me (I’ve seen so many companies that are doing great but they try to grow outside their lane and it eventually dooms them)“The most important thing for me is the freedom and flexibility. I don’t have a home and travel from one adventure location to the next. With all the money saved, I spend my downtime traveling to amazing locations or visiting friends and family!”My profit per adventure is anywhere from $2,000-$10,000 (if it’s an individual adventure like a proposal, I’ll charge way less than if a giant company hires me). My customer acquisition cost is very minimal. I spend $1,000-$3,000 every holiday season on my secret santa but that’s about it. Everything else is just time to talk about my business. I keep up on social media a bit but it’s not a huge focus. I’ve gotten enough SEO juice from reddit and news outlets to always rank pretty high. Plus there really isn’t anyone who does what I do. Probably because the start was such a grind.Last fall I started consulting. That’s been a fun arm of the business that I’m putting more focus into. As much as I love the world travel, I know in the future I’ll want to do less. Consulting allows me to eventually have a home again and spend time helping others create magical moment for the people around them.I also have a TV production company trying to sell a show about what I do. It’s a long shot but maybe HGTV will buy a pilot and a few episodes! That’ll probably help business!Past that, I love what I do. I just traveled to barcelona and ran an adventure that culminated with a gentleman proposing to his boyfriend! I get to travel the world creating fun moments for people, why would I change that?Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Oh man, the biggest thing I learned is valuing your product. Learned a lot about pricing structure for events early on. It took a year before I was charging a flat rate. I’m sure I just straight up lost money in the first few adventures. One of my best decisions was to always be open and transparent about everything. Cost, ideas, methods. I don’t think it benefits me to have “trade secrets.” I have 4 protegès who i just help to build competing businesses. The world needs more fun. I had a ton of help to get where I am, who would I be to not help other creatives?Past that, I work very hard but also take plenty of time off. I’ll do 3-4 back to back adventures and then take 3-4 weeks off (not completely off, just deadline free). I think it’s important to have a balance. What platform/tools do you use for your business?.Google Drive is an absolute godsend for me. Each past, present, and future adventure has its own folder with a budget sheet, master schedule sheet, receipts folder, notes about conversations, surveys, everything. Love it or hate it, google works.I also love the snooze feature in gmail. At the end of every day, my inbox is at zero, even if it’s just emails snoozed until tomorrow morning. The Snooze feature helps me prioritize things so they pop up when they need to and I don’t have to spend brainpower on a future task. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources? How to Win Friends and Influence People is the single greatest book known to man.Podcast wise, I listen to everything. How I Built This, Without Fail, The first season of Startup might be the most inspiring one for me. I’ve gone through it a few times.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Just start. Good God, so many people just. won’t. start. They spend 5 weeks asking people about what they should name their business or what their logo should be. They don’t launch a site because it’s not perfect. In the beginning of a business, the downside is you’re insignificant and no one knows about you. But it’s also a wonderful upside. Don’t worry about these little hiccups and just start doing. Don’t worry about figuring out taxes when you’re not even making money yet! JUST STARTAre you looking to hire for certain positions right now?Nope! It’s just me. I might get an assistant but for now I like being a one man show. That being said, If you want me to pay you to assist in an adventure, I have this form you can fill out! If I’m running an adventure in your area and I like what you wrote, I’ll reach out!Where can we go to learn more?Website: www.constructedadventures.comFacebook: Constructed AdventuresHere are some photos to give a little bit of flavor:imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageLiked this text interview? Low-No Budget Idea
Hello
In this post I am going to talk about a short film Affections, and how it inspired me to maintain low to no budget moviemaking.
Affections is a low budget short film, for this month Mastery Journal I'm going to talk about the film at affections. affections is a low-budget short film directed by Bridley Elliott. The producer of the film is Sarah Winshall.
The film was screened at Sundance Film Festival in 2016. It is available for streaming at Vimeo and nobudget.com
The film deals with the story of bored wife at home trying to escape the boundaries of the marriage and questions the foundation of the marriage g. Ip. Another very important question that is raised by the film is that is enclosing yourself in the boundaries of a relationship, is it important and enough to save a relationship? The film draws the line between indigenous practices encompassing yourself to the vicinity of a person or step out find your personal space to entice love and affection. Sometimes the same routine over and over becomes so monotonous but at the end of the day. It is that person who likes you for who you are.
The film begins with the story of a bored wife sitting at home un the middle of nowhere trying to socialize with whosoever. The neighbors aren’t very friendly either. Her married life does not seem to be very exciting. It is not until her hairstylist persuades her to step outside the boundaries of marriage she doesn’t steps outs and tells her that if she really wishes so she must try it and then decide. Unable to find any social outlet she ends up romanticizing about a homeless person who calls her pretty after she gets a haircut. During a beach date, in order to test if it was her hairdo or the person really likes her for who she is, she cuts her strands. The man immediately comments on her rugged haircut thus highlighting the superficiality of the relationship. And she finally ends up going home to her husband who doesn’t questions her once about her hairdo.
Thereby, conveying the message of how something that seem boring and repetitive can actual hold a greater meaning than a short lived superficial contact. It is actually the basic human nature we believe in a lot of short lived superficial moments but as we bury ourselves into more intimate connections we tend to release ourselves from the rigidity which is however the outcome of our own boredom.
The biggest way to resolve the budget issue is the production design. The film makes very judicious use of their space, with minimal furniture and use of pre-existing and outdoor objects in the frame. There is a very less use of wider shots and instead there are a lot of close ups and mid shots. Most of the wide shots take place outside in public space and thereby there isn’t a lot of stress laid upon buying props and set dressing. There are window blinders, and curtains used to add life to the scene. Older sepia toned pictures and sketching artworks in the background are used to fill the walls and the ambience. There are other things such as prop dolls and glass jars adding detail to the kitchen scene. But there are no elaborate setups for each scene,
The use of fast lenses with shallow depth of field further blurs the details in the background which makes it easier for audience to seek the details which are not there in the frame itself. Dirtying the shots is another way how the cinematography of the film makes the audience believe in the things which are not actually on the frame and also imparts a “cinematic” look to the frames, since there are foreground objects that create the idea of the third dimension in the film. Apart from that the filmmaker relies heavily on the natural lighting with more practical light sources and getting daylight seeping through doors and windows on the set.
The sound however is ambient in most parts of the film however in some sequences with lesser dialogues and silent gestures there are two soft generic soundtrack that plays with the film. These soundtracks do not make the use any collaborative orchestrated instruments, instead a very simple melody plays on the strings.
With minimal cuts for ease of light continuity there are scene which have basic editing styles. Wide to close up and then the transitions to other scenes. The pace is kept very rhythmic and slow not a lot of super sharp zero cuts come into play in order to overcomplicate a very simple plot. Hereby editing is kept simple and minimal.
The Upcoming Short:
For the future shorts, in order to minimize the budget there are measures that can be taken, the plot has to be devoid of elaborate explosions and war scenes. Minimal use of props and weapons.
In order to support the premise of the film, the film needs to be more on point and since shorts offer minimum setup time for audience.  Since there is only so much you can do in the limited time frame of a short film and thereby establishing detailed emotional connections between characters is not a beneficial thing to do since then you end up throwing a lot of information at the audience which can confuse the viewers.
Cinematically there can be measure that can be taken to avoid the dependence on the naturally available light. Using low budget or frugal lighting can help avoiding depending on everchanging sunlight. There are DIY methods to make camera rigs, sliders and some LED boards to support film lighting.
Using a pre-existing home setup is another way to avoid setup from scratch. In order for cheap and convenient score and soundtracks, there are a lot of royalty free music sites providing help for that. Editing can be as simpler as possible.
Hence, thereby independent filmmaking can be sustained from low to no budget.

I studied photojournalism at San Francisco State University where I learned a lot about the technical side of photography, ethics, work ethics, and storytelling. What I didn’t learn much about was the business the side of things. I knew in my second year of college I wanted to be professional photographer but I had no clue how to make that happen. The industry is constantly changing and universities can only teach you so much.
The challenging part isn’t becoming a pro — the hard part is having the confidence to make the leap and make it work.
I made the leap about a decade ago and it hasn’t always been easy, but I made it happen the old-fashioned way: hard work and persistence. Now I own a commercial photography and video production company, a destination wedding photography business, and I shoot as an editorial photographer as well.
When I teach workshops or meet budding photographers at events, the most common question I get asked is how to become a pro, so I decided to put my advice into an article. Everyone has a different path in their journey from amateur to pro, but I hope these tips will help steer you in the right direction.
Talent Isn’t Everything
I wasn’t the most talented student, but I worked my butt off and stayed committed. Don’t let the narcissist professionals tell you it’s all about talent. Becoming a professional photographer is like anything else: hard work pays off in the end.
Commit
Make sure you commit to making it work no matter what, through the good photos and the bad, for better or worse.
Don’t Let Contests Be Your Measuring Stick
Photography contests are a huge business and most of them are purely for them to profit from your entry fee. Don’t measure yourself by how many contests you’ve won, as your clients won’t care much about that. I’ve never had a client ask me about contests. Sure, enter them and have fun doing so but don’t stress if you haven’t won anything.
Shoot Even When You Aren’t Paid To Shoot
I’m not saying to go out there and work for free, but practice and shoot whenever you can. If you want to learn about portrait photography, gather your friends and do portraits of them for fun. Borrow lights if that’s your thing and figure how to use them.
Get A Proper Portfolio Website
A Facebook gallery isn’t a website, a Flickr account isn’t a website, an Instagram account isn’t a website — you get the picture. Your website should have portfolio galleries in your specialties (e.g. weddings, portraits, products). You need a contact page, and about page, and a simple logo.
Of course, having social media accounts is important but use those outlets to draw attention to your portfolio website where potential clients can see your work and hire you. I use Squarespace, they are super easy to use, very professional customized templates and they won’t break the bank. Another great option is PhotoShelter, they are great resource for business advice and to manage your archive.
Equipment
Don’t be intimated by photographers with lenses on top of lenses and mounds of gear. Get a simple kit that you can afford. It’s easy to think “oh, if I had that $4K camera I’d be much better. Get better by practicing and learning not by spending. Now I have expensive equipment, true, but when I started I shot with one lens and one camera for an entire year’s worth of assignments and I got by just fine.
Treat Yourself Like A Business
When you first start off you are the head of marketing, sales, accountant, etc. Understand the basics of these positions and apply them to your business. Download basic contracts and invoice templates and customize them as you grow larger.
Commit
Wait, dude, you already said that. Well, it’s worth mentioning twice so there, I said it. You will have moments when you will be bummed out because of a slow month(s) — photographer’s doubt I call it — but stay with it and use that down time to focus on positive things like practicing and learning something new.
Don’t Be An Ass
This applies to all professionals I suppose, but I feel many photographers can, well, be asses. Don’t be insulted when you get low ball offers or asked to work for free. Let me rephrase that, you can be insulted, just don’t show it and don’t burn bridges. Understand your value, the market, and politely explain (not in condescending way) why your fees are the way they are.
Don’t Expect It To Be Easy
I’ve met a lot people who get into photography because they are lazy and it sounded better than a 9-5pm job. I said it, writers and photographers are some of the laziest people I know and the ones who get work hustle and have ambition, the ones who don’t are lazy. It’s pretty simple. When they aren’t shooting, they are b**ching online about other’s work, hanging out in cafés not getting anything done. When I’m not shooting, I’m clocking in and putting full work days into my business, marketing, sales, research, etc.
Stack The Odds In Your Favor
For many editorial photographers, their personal work/projects is their portfolio. Spend a lot of time on your projects and do them right. If photographer A spent 1 week on his personal project and photographer B spent 2 years on theirs, photographer B has a huge advantage. Most editors aren’t looking at how long you spent shooting your projects, they are looking at the final product and that’s it, so spend time on your project and get it right.
Crowd Funding
I bet you think I’m going to tell you that this is a great resource. I heard a panel directed at young aspiring photographers teaching them about crowdfunding as a business plan and it upset me — ok, it pissed me off.
Don’t rely on others’ money to start your career, it’s like asking for donation for a charity and there are people in need a lot more than your friends funding you to travel to Africa to take pictures. Don’t be an ass, like I said before — work and save and fund yourself. I get it for Kickstarter and places like that where you are trading special editions of a book, or selling prints, and stuff like that. I just mean don’t make this your only source of income. It’s not sustainable and your friends/family will get sick of funding you to travel around and take pictures.
Having A Book Doesn’t Make You Good
I see people rush to publish a book as if that solidifies their place as a pro. Anyone can self publish a book, it’s very easy to do. I can go out this afternoon, take selfies of me taking selfies, title it self reflection, and have my book published by this evening. Does that make me a pro? Does that make me good? No, it makes me a narcissistic weirdo. It can be expensive and time-consuming to publish your own book, so wait until you have a body of work or project that you feel is worthy of a book and then do it right.
Understand The Market And The Competition
It’s very important to understand the market and your competition, so d*mn important. Look at the work of photographers in your market, see what they are doing right with their branding, marketing, etc and learn from them. I’m not saying to copy everything they are doing, just use them as a measuring stick for you and your business.
Make An Announcement To The World
Walk out of your house or apartment right now and scream to the world, “I’m a professional photographer!” Ok, don’t do that, but rather, when you meet people in the real world, introduce yourself as a photographer rather than “oh I work in the cooperate world and sometimes I take photos of this, that, and the other thing.” See yourself as a photographer and others will see you the same way. Do the same in the social media world as well.
Have A Content Strategy
I work with great content strategist named Brandon Chew. He’s taught my a lot for all my brands and helps me strategize on social content. We think carefully how each social media outlet identity and purpose and how each outlet fits into the brand scheme of our marketing strategy. For example, I use Instagram to tease content that’s on my website, things like that. It’s also important to budget and strategize on how you target and boost posts. Email Brandon if you want to take your business to the next level.
I hope these tips were helpful to you.
