Adonis Otogari and Microaggressions in Ensemble Stars

So, I'm sure you've all seen the most recent Adonis card. It's very pretty, it's got frills and other cute things Don isn't usually seen in...

...However, I'm sure at least some of you also noticed he's a bit on the pale side here when compared to other cards.

Why is this? Why would he be drawn noticeably lighter here and not other times? Well, one could imagine it has something to do with colorism.

Like I said before, Adonis isn't usually seen like this. The one time he's not shirtless for no reason or wearing something culturally insensitive, he suddenly looks paler.

Adonis is portrayed as "exotic" and "sexy" a lot of the time (which, if it wasn't already weird to do that with your only brown character, he's also 17, so...) and all those times, he's noticeably brown.

It's been a long standing stereotype that brown skin doesn't fit "cute" or "pretty" aesthetics. That those are for light skinned people, and light skinned people only.

Within the story itself presents another issue. In the story, Adonis goes to a flea market with Hajime. Adonis wants to sell a doll from his childhood, and has no luck until a little girl shows up.

(I'd like to specify I'm not a translator so I'm not 100% sure myself on what is exactly said, but this is going off what I read in the TL I read) The little girl tugs on Hajime to get his attention, because she's afraid to approach someone "as big" as Adonis.

This is something present in multiple enstars stories that feature Adonis. They even use Aira as a mouthpiece for this, a character who is not only supposed to be a fan of Undead, but a character who should also know what it's like to be made fun of for being mixed, as Aira was made fun of for having a half french mom when he was younger. Adonis is spoken about and described as if he's this huge, hulking monster of a boy, and he's just terrifying to look at, but is he? No.

I said on my Twitter just the other day, that every so often enstars will try to make a point about how people like Adonis are treated, but they fail because the point always comes across more as "he might seem scary but he's a really nice guy, don't judge a book by it's cover!" rather than what it should be, which is "there's nothing particularly scary about Adonis, people just demonize brown/black people for the color of their skin."

Now, you'll notice there seems to be a bit of a focus on how "big" Adonis is. How tall is he? About 5'10", which is about as tall as the tallest Ensemble Stars characters are. Adonis is around the same height as Midori, Eichi, Keito, the other members of Undead, etc. If people being afraid of him was really all about his size, you think we'd hear about it more from characters other than him. But, it seems like a topic very focused on him.

Now this isn't just a cover for characters being frightened by him for the color of his skin, the focus on Adonis being "big" when he's the same height as all the other tall characters in enstars is reminiscent of another stereotype. The "big black man" stereotype. Stereotypes about brown and black men don't just portray them as threatening creatures, but as LARGE threatening creatures. This stereotype of black men being very "big" and tall is not just a stereotype used for portraying us as a threat, but it's also seen in the oversexualization of black men.

This isn't just present in the narrative or said by other characters, but it's said by Adonis himself. A moment that comes to mind is a time where he refers to Mitsuru (and the other members of Ra*bits), as small, and talks about "protecting small creatures". Now, Mitsuru is 5'6", and the height difference between Adonis and Mitsuru is actually quite minimal.

And yet, the enstars writers feel the need to not only make other characters react to Adonis as if he's a huge scary guy, but have Adonis think that way about himself.

Like I said before, any social commentary Ensemble Stars tries to have fails when they feed into it like this. It shouldn't be "Adonis is a really nice and sweet guy despite looking scary", it should be about how he doesn't look scary at all.

Enstars wants to make good points, that much I can tell, but it contradicts itself with things like this, and that's pretty disheartening.

I mean think about it, Ensemble Stars has characters who have possibly committed murder, attempted murder, threatened other characters, carry weapons openly, are trained assassins, etc but the scariest of them all is the blasian middle eastern boy who's hobby is literally watching small animals and plays the ocarina? I mean c'mon.

Info / Explanations for the Curious

All ages are one year up from their currently listed age. The newly released ages for 4Piece are confirmed to be before their current year birthdays, meaning they will age up during the year.

While Jin and Akiomi's ages are currently listed in !!/ES1 Era as 31-32 and 29-30 on their profiles, respectively, these ages are not widely agreed upon, due to them not lining up with the Main Story's stated ages (which would be one year younger for each). Therefore, I used a wider range encompassing both of these possible ages.

Rinne and Niki never attended high school, and Niki therefore did not graduate with any of the ! Era third years, while Rinne would have been a third year during the War, had he attended.

Rei was held back due to his time abroad in his second year, making him one year older than the other ! Era Yumenosaki third-years, which he graduated with.

Tatsumi and Ritsu were both held back in their second years, due to Tatsumi's hospitalization and Ritsu's chronic absences due to his condition and lack of motivation, making them one year older than the other !!/ES1 Era third-years. Therefore, Ritsu recently graduated from Yumenosaki at the end of !!/ES1 Era March, while Tatsumi graduated from Reimei Academy around the same time.

Kaname was a first year alongside Jun during the Reimei Revolution (while Tatsumi was a second-year). Therefore, had he not been rendered comatose, he would have graduated Reimei Academy with Jun at the end of the !!/ES1 Era, making him the same age as the other !!/ES1 Era third years.

Hitsugi was admitted to the producer course during !!/ES1 Era as a second year, much like Anzu the year before, placing his age as the same as the other current !!!/ES2 third years. (While Hitsugi is 17-18 NEGI identifies as his older sister, likely putting her conscious around the age Hitsugi's original older sister died).

Current HiMERU's age is unknown, though he's older than Kaname and ran away young after his mother died, having never known about Kaname's existence until many years later. Therefore, his age range is typically placed in the early 20s, the most common estimate putting him around Rinne's age.

Seiya and Gatekeeper's ages are unknown, though they are typically estimated to be slightly older than Jin and Akiomi (mid-late 30s), with Gatekeeper seen as older, due to Gatekeeper's long history with Godfather (while Seiya is still an active idol with a late-teenage son).

Realizes his mistake as soon as he calms down. He's vulnerable during the heat of the moment, and because of that weakness he hurts you. He cares for you, he really does, so immediately he goes to you and apologizes and admits that he was in the wrong. So please accept it, because the poor man keeps breaking his heart over your tear-stricken face. Definitely will need some hugs and cuddles and needs you reassuring him that you still love the man.

Acts like nothing went wrong. It's a sort of coping mechanism for him; he just plays it off like nothing happened (this is after you were the one to apologize). But deep down he still regrets what he did to you, and that little part is pushing him to relent and confess. It's going to take quite a while for him to actually say something about it, but for now he won't be worrying about it. For now.

Beats himself up for it. Like the first scenario they know what they did immediately after, but now they're so guilty about it they won't go to you. He's going to be more careful around you from now on, but will definitely be a bit more clingy.

Hajime: I had suggested hosting the event at Yumenosaki Academy’s library as opposed to Seishou Hall’s, as Anzu Onee-chan is joining us today. I didn’t expect everyone to agree with me though ♪

Tsumugi: Haha. I used to be part of the Library Committee here – coming back fills me with nostalgia. How about hosting our activities here every once in a while?

Nagisa: …I’ve missed this too. It seems like alumni are permitted to come back. For that reason, I think it’s not a bad idea.

Kaoru: Mhm. I frequently come back to the school, so dropping by is completely A-OK with me.

Hajime: The only downsides of having our activities here is that we’d need to keep quiet and talk with our indoor voices. Not to mention, we can’t snack on tea and desserts while reading.

Tsukasa: Mm, these aspects are rather troublesome… But if our Circle events are held here, we can invite Onee-sama to join us during her break.

Speaking of which… where did Aoba-senpai run off to? He was here a few moments ago…?

Kaoru: He went over to those bookshelves in the back, probably looking for books he’d like to recommend to everyone. After all, there are lots of books here… if I ever get the chance, I’d like to go and see if there’s anything that interests me too ♪

Tsumugi: Hahaha, Kaoru-kun rarely dropped by the library while he was still in school. Apologies for disappearing without so much as a hello~ There’s a book I had wanted to recommend to everyone. It’s no longer available for purchase outside, but fortunately, there’s still a copy here.

Nagisa: …I, too, have specifically brought some books that I would like to recommend to everyone. Though I do find the book you found rather interesting… Why don’t we start with your recommendation?

Word count: 1636 Written by: Yeul Proofread: n/a Writer’s note: been a few days over the 1 year anniversary so cafe manager here will give yall something to eat, also kinda Knights centric and some very obvious favouritism with Anzu

1 year of a fever dream.

…All of them were fake.

“...ke up! (Y/n), you hear me?”

You wonder. You never wanted to wake up. Not face the harsh reality that was provided by mother nature.

Rustling on your bed you squint open your tired eyes.

A square room. A bed. A working table, and finally, your older sister.

“...Yes I do, (S/n).”

“Alright. Good. We need to leave now, the cafe needs to be opened you know?”

Right. The cafe. The small quaint cafe that you and your sister owned.

The small cafe that seemed to have gained so much popularity that people would start to find the little shop somewhere within the small dark yet warm streets.

Getting up from your bed, you change your clothes and brush your teeth, bringing your bag as you lock the door to your house.

“Thinking of which, should we move the cafe somewhere else? Customers have been coming in a lot lately, and there’s not enough space.”

You muse, and your sister nods in agreement.

“Yeah, but staying where we started 10 years ago by our parents bring the nostalgia, no?” she replies.

That was true. You were a wee little kid back then, unknowing of the new ‘world’ that would be given once you were 18.

Memories. Nice to know that we still remember.

Opening the cafe doors, the warmth of the orange lights turn on.

9:00 AM and your first customer walks in.

Familiar tousled orange hair, bright blue eyes… along with a dark black haired boy with sharp deep blue eyes.

“I’d like a Vanilla Latte, a Macchiato, an espresso shot, a hot chocolate, along with 2 croffles and 2 bagels please.”

That was one familiar voice.

Pressing the buttons on the cashier screen, you nod as you recheck the order.

“Alright, may I have your name?”

“Hidaka Hokuto.”

“Would you like your order to be taken out?”

The boy nods in replacement of a vocal reply.

“That will be 2800 yen.”

Taking out his wallet, he brings a 2000 yen note along with one 500 yen coin with three 100 yen coins.

Nodding, you press the onscreen keyboard, writing the dark haired boy’s name down.

“Your order will be ready soon, thank you for ordering!”

Taking the order out, you call your sister as she gets the food ready while you brew the drinks.

Hidaka Hokuto…

Hidaka… Hokuto?

You realise quite quickly that the ‘fantasy’ you dreamed of was actually real– and you definitely know these people. Very well in fact. You had ‘interacted’ with these two and you knew the orange haired’s name. Akehoshi Subaru. But if you said that out loud, they’d definitely find you odd, right?

A few minutes later, the food was done as well as the drinks.

Placing them at the small space to take the drinks, the dark haired boy walks up, taking the cups while the oranged haired boy takes the food.

The latter smiles as he shouts a short but warm, “Thank you!” as they both leave, the small bell chime jingling to produce a calm rhythm.

Many more people come in as they come and go– some similar, such as Aoba Tsumugi, Mikejima Madara, Oukawa Kohaku, Hasumi Keito, Shino Hajime, Hakaze Kaoru– where he tried flirting with you, keyword, tried– Aoi Hinata and Aoi Yuta, Kagehira Mika, Kazehaya Tatsumi, and the group of Ran Nagisa, Tomoe Hiyori, Saegusa Ibara and Sazanami Jun– which was basically about 90% of the people you had interacted with in your fantasy.

Others stayed at tables to talk and study. A few hours later, 14:50, a dark navy haired boy walks in as he stares at the menu. Then he checks his phone, and then he orders.

“May I have one hot Chocolate, one Vanilla Latte, one Mocha and one iced Americano?”

“Of course, that will be 1450 yen.”

He smiles as he brings out a debit card. You take it as you slide it over the card machine.

“Would you like it to go or in the cafe?”

“To go please.”

“Thank you for ordering! May I have your name?”

“Fushimi Yuzuru.”

Typing rapidly on the monitor, you nod as he walks to the small waiting place.

Thats another that I know… Fine, was it? I wonder if they’re idols here or just normal people, but judging from others’ reactions they all just seem to be one big group of friends…

Brewing the last of the order, you put them in the small cardboard boxes as you bring them where Yuzuru stands.

“Thank you very much.”

He smiles and leaves, the glass door chiming along with the small twittering of the birds outside.

Wonder who’s coming next…

A girl with milk chocolate hair and aquamarine blue eyes enter the cafe with care, as she walks towards the cashier.

“Hello, I’d like to have three hot Chocolates, one cappuccino, one Vanilla Latte, and one hot Americano please.”

“Alright, that will be 2100 yen. Would you like it to go or in the cafe?”

“To go please, heres the cash.”

Smiling, you take the cash as you put them in the box.

“May I have your name?”

“Anzu.”

“Thank you for ordering. Your order will be ready in a few!”

She smiles in appreciation as she settles on a small booth.

Your sister comes in as she brews the drinks while you greet another customer– a group.

The red haired walks up as he talks with his friends, then turns to you to order.

“Hello! May I have one hot Chocolate, one Vanilla Latte, one iced Americano, two Cappuccinos, two cupcakes and two croffles?”

“Of course. That will be 3350 yen. To go or in the cafe?”

“In the cafe please.”

He takes out a credit card as you take it and slide it over the card machine, the receipt being printed out slowly.

Taking the receipt and the card, you hand it over to the boy.

“May I have your name?”

“Suou Tsukasa.”

Typing it in, you nod as you smile.

“Your order will be ready in a while. Thank you for ordering!”

The group smiles as they walk over to a booth.

Meanwhile, Anzu’s order was done, and was set down at the counter.

Calling out her name but with no reply, to check up, only to find her dozing off at the wall.

…Should I wake her up…? But she’s so peaceful now…

Deciding on what to do, she wakes up, deep aquamarine like eyes blinking rapidly as she stares at your figure.

…She’s really pret– Woah (Y/n), focus on the job!

“...Oh, you’re awake– your order is ready!”

You hand her the drinks as she bows in reply, leaving the cafe in a tousled hurry.

And about 20 minutes later, all of the orders are done for the group of five– which you recognise as Suou Tsukasa, Tsukinaga Leo– happily drawing on the small cafe napkin– Sena Izumi, Sakuma Ritsu– dozing off– and Narukami Arashi, talking to her friends.

Setting the tray down, you walk over to the outer side of the counter as you bring the tray to the booth.

“Ah, thank you so much!”

You smile as you take the tray, setting it on the counter as you head back into the staff room.

Checking your phone, it shows as 20:25, which was 35 minutes close to closing time.

Your sister looks at your figure as she laughs in amusement, tone arch.

“Some of the customers seem very alike to your descriptions of people in your dreams, (Y/n).”

“They are them… their names are the same, its just their jobs that seem to be not… the same?”

She looks confused, but you understand. You’re confused too.

“Oh right, since it’s close to closing, we need to clean for tomorrow…”

Your sister mumbles.

Taking the broom, you and your sister head out to find Anzu outside of the cafe, soaked in rain.

Dropping your broom to your older sister, you open the door as you usher her in, bringing a soft dry towel. The five at the booth waves at her as she waves back.

While Anzu dries herself, you head to the booth where you find them starting to leave, putting the extra napkins as a pile.

“Thank you for visiting the cafe! However, it’s raining outside, so it’s best to stay in until it goes away.”

They smile as they nod, resuming to talking again as you take the cups and tissues back to the counter.

Leaving them for your sister to take care of, you check up on Anzu, seeing her in a better condition.

“You alright?”

“Yeah… thanks for letting me in…”

“(Y/n)”

“Mm… thanks, (Y/n)...”

Anzu nods in appreciation as she stares at you.

“I… I think I know you…?”

Anzu speaks.

Making a slightly surprised squeak, your head turns as you look at her.

“Me?”

She nods. Also confused, she stares more intensely, as she analyses your face.

“Yeah. I think I do, I’ve seen you in my dreams… it doesn’t make sense, but it does…”

Thats the same predicament I’m having today…

“Quite the same if I say so myself, 90% of my customers were people I’m familiar with in my dreams…”

You gesture over to the five.

Anzu nods as she looks over, her eyes widening as she looks back at you.

“They’re my friends, and they texted me a few minutes ago that they thought they recognised you…” she continues, “Quite odd, right?”

“Odd but nice to know I’m not the only one.” You chuckle.

The street lights seem to flicker in glee when you two approach the five.

Conversing, you feel as if you stand in a moment of epiphany that you weren’t the only one.

hi kit!!! alright here we go 😼

1. hajime shino - i think i just really like how he's so kind n sincere to everyone!! he feels like he cant keep up w/ everyone like mitsuru n even tomoya bc of his airheadness kinda but still works on his strengths to become just as strong as everyone else !! it just makes me really happy to see him grow :] plus him allowing himself to be more selfish n not be a good kid all the time is really fucking amazing grrr like most of the time he's geniunely angry n hurt is really nice to see bc he needs to express himself!!!!

2. tomoya mashiro - honestly the way tht he is written to be plain. i really really love the fact tht fitting in for him is smthn to be despised when some would love to just be like him. but seeing him find a big talent in acting n be able to accept tht it's ok he's not particularly strong in some fields is actually smthn he can embrace is smthn i love seeing !!

3. mitsuru tenma - god. mitsuru!!!! just.. the way he's written off by characters as someone who is constantly never paying attention. when he's the exact opposite. he's very attentive to how his friends (especially ra*bits) feel but just has a unique way of expressing it! he's so smart n wonderful i love him

4. leo tsukinaga - it's honestly hard to find words why i like him bc his character is so complicated. but i think it's just bc of his unpredictability n how complicated he is is why! he seems shallow at first but he's so much more deeper. he's hurting deeply bc of everything thts been done to him n what he did. it's bittersweet i think.

5. kaoru hakaze - he's much more sweeter than he seems. it's bc of his trauma tht he couldnt form connections with the ones he wanted to the most, so he craved affection elsewhere. but the fact he's starting to become more passionate abt his idol work n learn to form those connections through others is amazing :)
