i send my friend suggestions of tourist places to see in his new country (his contract was extended, lucky him!) or messages about friend of friends i have living there that he could maybe meet for fellow americans to talk to, and his response is always that he doesnt have time. and not in that exaggerated way that people do to seem busy. but in that bone tired way i recognize from him here in LA, that i recognize in myself.
#jrnlsht#i watch the lives of my friends who have Made It on social media and its like looking through glass into another world i cant relate to#theyre so happy and confident and successful and its beautiful#you know whats a funny thing about LA#so many people on the on*line da*ting apps put *successful* on their list of requirements in the people they want to date#like theres a bar of entry and if you haven't reached a certain goal post like... blue check marks on your social media or a level of wealt#then they arent even going to want to get to know you#and its so antithetical to how i was raised i cant even comprehend#and yet i see it happening to my own relationships#in pittsburgh i had friends from literally ALL walks of life from people who made even less money than me to comfortable to fairly wealthy#here my friends are almost entirely of one professional class#and i have been observing how my hyper wealthy friends self select in who they interact with to maintain this wealthy bubble around them#i dont think it's entirely intentional but its also not not intentional if you know what i mean#anyway its one of the reasons i fucking loved the talk on saturday oh my god those two were a breath of fresh air i needed so much#these smart genius dudes built their own life and instead of constantly looking up for more and more personal gain#they paused and looked at the people still desperately trying to rise#and were like if i have gotten this far why cant i help you do it too and then they DID IT they actually started helping#i think that is the true meaning of success

Your Guide to Growing Radishes
Growing radishes is one of the easiest of all gardening tasks. I always suggest novice gardeners grow them because of how easy they are. The success of the crop boosts morale and confidence in young or new gardeners. If you don’t care for radishes, you can always feed them to your animals or share them with friends and family.
Radish seeds are prolific and have a high germination rate. Within 21 days of being sown you can have small radishes ready for eating. They don’t take up a large area so you can plant them in between larger crops which need more time to be ready. I like to plant radishes in with my broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.
Few garden vegetables will produce as long and as much as growing radishes will. They are basically divided into spring and winter varieties. Depending on where you live, you can grow them year round. As long as you have cooler weather, like we do here in zone 6/5.
Spring radishes, such as Crimson Giant and Cherry Bomb, mature faster than winter varieties such as China Rose. Most people feel winter varieties make a better crop when growing radishes. They do keep longer in the garden, have a stronger flavor, and store better than their spring counterparts. To have a prolonged season, try growing a couple different varieties from both the spring and winter radishes.
Sowing
Whether you grow spring or winter varieties, or both, plant them when the soil is not drenched. Radishes are shade tolerant and need only about 6 hours of sun a day. They prefer a slightly alkaline soil, but in my experience, they will grow just about anywhere. They should be planted in loose soil about ½” deep and loosely covered. The directions will say to plant them three inches apart. This is hard to do with those little seeds so I just do the best I can and thin them as they grow.

If you and your family members like radishes, you may want to try succession planting. This is simply making small plantings a week or two a part. If you plant in the spring, don’t plant after the temperature gets above 65-70 degrees. This will avoid not having cool weather to allow enough time until harvest and to prevent bolting. The varieties for spring planting with longer growing times often tolerate warmer temperatures better than the shorter growing season varieties. Be sure to check the time and temperature requirements of the variety you choose.
Harvesting
The secret to the perfect radish is knowing when to harvest it. If you let them over mature in the garden, they will be hot and pithy. I like large radishes so I thin them (my most hated garden chore) as they grow. Thinning them to 3″ apart allows plenty of growth room. Also, it gives us a little extra green in our diet and gives the chickens a delicious treat.
We harvest all through the growing season. Once we thin them and the bulbs begin to develop, we pull them when we want them. Tasting them is the best way to determine if they’re ready for harvest. I don’t preserve radishes, although I have read some pickling food preservation recipes for radishes. While radishes do contain vitamin C and some iron, they aren’t included on the antioxidants foods list. You’d have to eat a lot of them to get any significant dose of either. This is why I don’t take the time, energy or storage space to preserve them.
Even though they aren’t a powerhouse of nutrition, radishes can be helpful in relieving constipation. Because of their fibrous nature, they can be part of a natural constipation remedy. Combine the radish and even it’s greens with other salad ingredients to help ensure everything is flowing naturally.
Spring Vs. Winter
Growing radishes in the spring means you will need to pay a little more attention to them. They mature quickly and so have to be checked for harvest so they won’t bolt and taste hot. Once you pull them, cut off the greens. We juice the greens or add them to a salad. Wash both the greens and the roots well in water and pat dry or let air dry. I keep them in separate vegetable bags in the refrigerator. I’ve kept them up to a month, just be sure to check them before eating.
Growing radishes in the winter requires less of a watchful eye. They can be stored in the root cellar or covered with mulch in the garden and left there. If your soil freezes, you won’t be able to over winter them in the garden. I spent most of my life gardening in growing zone 8 and we were able to overwinter in the garden. Now that I’m learning to garden in a new growing zone, I’ve learned I can’t do this here in zone 6/5.
Tips for Growing Radishes
You can easily save seeds from radishes by allowing some of them to bolt. They will form seedpods which look a lot like a small pea pod. The seeds are tiny so you won’t have to let but a few go to seed.
Don’t plant them in an overly fertilized bed. Too much fertilization will make beautiful greens, but small, less tasty radishes.
Thin the radishes once they are up 2-3” high. This is how I achieve the 3” space needed for growing radishes.
Our garden is deep mulched so once the radishes are up good, I pull a light layer of the mulch back over them to help keep moisture in, bugs off, and weeds out. If you don’t do deep mulch gardening, cover them with a light layer of mulch.
Be sure your soil drains well. Too much water will cause the radishes to split and rot. Radishes like moist, but not wet soil. Too little water will cause them to be fiery hot and bolt.
Remember, growing radishes with plants requiring a longer growing season not only saves space, but is ideal for aphids control because it will draw aphids and other pests away from your young squash and cucumber plants as well as other veggies you may be growing.
Pests
As with most garden pests, the root maggot which affects the radish, can be managed with good crop rotation. Wood ash incorporated into the soil not only gives a nice dose of potassium and other nutrients to the soil, it manages the larva of the root maggot and other garden pests. You will have success growing radishes virtually pest free otherwise.
Growing Radishes in Containers
If you are interested in growing vegetables in pots, try radishes. Since radishes have a shallow root system, they are perfect for container growing. They can be grown in any container that is at least a gallon in size and is wide enough to accommodate the 3″ space requirements. Use the soil of your choice, just be sure it will drains well. It’s a good idea to not use glazed pots for growing veggies which don’t like overly moist soil. Pots which are not glazed allow for evaporation of excess moisture in the soil. Everything else is the same as growing radishes in a prepared garden bed.
Do you have a variety of radish you prefer? Do you have special tips for growing radishes you can share with us? We’d love to have you share your experience in the comments below.
Safe and Happy Journey,

Ellen von Unwerth:’ Let’s photograph daughters experiencing life’
Blending old-world charm with a uniquely provocative eroticism, Ellen von Unwerths photographs are a riot of fun and sly subversion. Richard Godwin hears why we need to take ourselves less seriously
Ellen von Unwerth cant stop laughing. The German photographer, 63, is bouncing around the Taschen gallery in West Hollywood in her sneakers, attempting to talk through the images from her latest exhibition and art book, Heimat.
So heimat means Fatherland or Motherland or where you were born and where your roots are, she tells me. Bavaria is not my heimat, but we wanted to make a parody of the whole Bavarian thing.
The whole Bavarian thing, apparently, involves supermodels frolicking nude in Alpine meadows, performing suggestive acts with sausages, udders and holy virgins, sledging topless, spanking one another in dirndls and generally enjoying the fecundity and vigour for which the southern German slopes are celebrated. Oh, ja, its very sexual there, even the clothes they push up the bosoms and there are lots and lots of sausages, ha ha ha, she explains. But you see so many images that are dark and depressing at the moment. All these sad women being sad! So I figured, lets show girls having fun and enjoying life.
The new Bardot: Claudia Schiffer in Italy, 1989. Photograph: Ellen von Unwerth
Von Unwerth has a peculiar talent for getting famous and beautiful women (Claudia Schiffer, Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Kate Moss) to remove their inhibitions and frequently their underwear while retaining control. Her images are often provocatively sexual, but its usually her subjects who are doing the provoking. I always give them something to do, she confides. When somebodys not moving I get bored. I take two pictures and I say: Great, I have it now. But I love the body in movement. I like the nude body in movement.
The fashion world adores her for this. You could tell from the raucous launch party for Heimat, where Arnold Schwarzenegger improbably rubbed shoulders with Yolandi Visser, and most of the models from the shoot ended up jumping in a swimming pool. Von Unwerths Instagram feed is also one of the few that make fashion weeks actually look fun. On International Womens Day, the fashiony corners of Instagram were awash with tributes to her: You bring fun, sexy, craziness to set. I always enjoy pushing my boundaries, embracing my femininity/sexuality and of course my personality always loud and proud when we work together, wrote one model, Alexina Graham. Ellen von Unwerths playful and empowering photos are such a joy to be a part of and I am so happy she is there to represent women in such a male dominated profession! wrote another, Syrie Moskowitz.
I always give the models something to do: Ellen von Unwerth. Photograph: Steffen Kugler
It is clear that everyone had a whole lot of giggles in Bavaria. Von Unwerth motions towards an image of three women topless on a sled: This model is Miss Russia and she brought a lot of vodka to the shoot. So they were drinking behind my back in the snow. Von Unwerth is not much given to analysing. When I allude to the male gaze she has no idea what Im talking about. When I find myself grasping for the word pornography she shoots back: Have you ever seen a porno? Well, one of your pictures does literally depict two people having sex in a hayloft. Its more inspired by a B-movie sense of camp. I wouldnt say porno. (After our interview, one of her assistants calls me to make sure that I dont think its pornographic.)
Of course, the word I should have reached for was erotic. Or perhaps simply German. Look at the scandal there was with Janet Jackson over here, she says referring to the Super Bowl nipple slip of 2004. It was a boob! Its something you should be proud of and not hide. Especially if its nice. Ha ha ha ha! In Germany it is not like this. Even if you go to a park in Berlin in the summer, everybody is naked and playing frisbee. You would get arrested if you did that in LA.

Von Unwerth was born in Frankfurt in 1954 and grew up in an orphanage and a succession of foster homes. She has no recollection of her parents and not much inclination to reflect on their absence. Its what made my life, she says. I was free from influence and I was able to take the best from everywhere. I dont really have a heimat. So her heimat is wherever she happens to be? Exactly.
She moved to Bavaria aged 16 to join a commune and later went to study in Munich. On her first day at university someone said: Hey, would you like to do a modelling job? And I turned around and never went back to university. That led to a shoot for the German magazine Bravo, which in turn led to her being signed by Elite models in Paris. I kind of hated modelling, but somehow I did it for 10 years. I was not really the exhibitionist type. Its hard psychologically to be a model. And mostly people told me not to move when I was posing. I just wanted to be like the girls in my pictures now.
Your Turn, (Rihanna), 2009. Photograph: Ellen von Unwerth
It was only in 1986 that she first started taking photographs herself a boyfriend lent her his camera on a fashion production in Kenya and she ventured into a nearby village to shoot local children. I came back home and showed them to my friends and they were like: Theyre really good, Ellen! Because models are supposed to be stupid. I was surprised myself because I wasnt so interested in photography. I had never learnt how to do it.
Her images were published in the French magazine Jill, and she went on to shoot for i-D, the Face, Interview and Vogue, in the vein of her greatest influence Helmut Newton. It was a shoot with the then unknown Claudia Schiffer for French Elle in 1988 that made both of their careers. She was a sweet girl and I didnt think so much of it, but when I looked at the pictures, I called my husband [music producer Christian Fourteau] and said: Doesnt she look like Brigitte Bardot? The teeth, the eyes? Soon after we did the Guess jeans campaign and it was a jumpstart to my career. She also discovered Eva Herzigov (shes oozing with vitality) and Nadja Auermann, and shot the infamous 1995 Playboy shoot that announced that Drew Barrymore was no longer the girl from ET. She has remained in demand even though the smartphone era has cheapened the art.

Its not special any more to be a photographer, she says. Even when I take a picture, everybody stands next to me and takes the same picture. Five minutes later its on everyone elses Instagram and Im old news so Im forced to take pictures on my iPhone too.
She tells me she can usually tell the difference between a photograph a man has taken and one a woman has taken. But I find it crazy how women photograph themselves all the time. When I was a girl and looked in the mirror, my stepmother would come in and give me a slap. There was this idea that if you did that, the devil would get in you and steal your personality. Now everyone does this. I ask models sometimes, Do you have to take so many selfies? And they say: Only when I take selfies do I get likes. Its sad! Narcissism is so celebrated in our society, sometimes people lose interest in other people.
Heimat by Ellen von Unwerth, price 650, is published by Taschen as a collectors edition of 1,500 copies, each numbered and signed by the photographer. For more information, go to taschen.com
