ok i wrote this up immediately & forgot about it in drafts, but my thoughts on promare under the cut

- COLORS SHAPES MOTION ANIMATION SEXY CUBE TRIANGLESHAPES SHAPES SHAPES GEOMETRY

- the part right in the beginning introducing the 3 mad burnish. general 1, general 2, & just the absolute pinnacle of character design sit on the throne arrogant head tilt is the sexiest thing ive seen in my entire life. pointy black armor???? fire motorcycle???? ghhfosigjfh my god

- so was the fight after that. the arrogance. the swirling the sword around. the drama. god

- the devotion of lio's two generals I wanna know more about them they were just like YEAH I LOVE YOU BOSS I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU OUT OF A CANNON. i love them. specifically gueira.

- also from the lio’s side of things, we see that he only took over mad burnish a couple months before the main plot, so why did kray keep saying “HE HAS BEEN OUR ENEMY FOR 30 YEARS”. like even in galo’s side of things, we see meis & gueira ONLY in that first cutscene. where was lio then.

- required moment where it shows “main group of characters aren’t racist!” w the “not all burnish are bad people! the terrorists are bad people & the rest of them are just trying to live.” i liked watching them stand up for the pizza guy though.

- Galo Realizes Racism Is Happening And He Helped With It, Emotional Turmoil Moments. that whole bit was really good. also the fact he wasn’t a burnt the whole time.

- the whole team of characters galo's with. I love em. fantastic.

- pink haired girl never got her character arc finished rip her but it's fine. thought her crush on galo was kinda forced but honestly they didn’t push it as hard as i expected, so! good enough

- pink haired girl’s sister is still like. a war criminal tho. she still helped kray try to commit genocide. i see no redemption.

- speaking of kray can yall PLEASE be nasty somewhere else don’t make me see kray x one of the main leads ever again

- THE VOLCANO SCENE. THE DRAGON. OH MY GOD OH MY FUCKING GOD OH M FJ AGHJK DFKHFDG DVGJN H THAT SCENE WAS THE BEST SCENE IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE. OH MY FUCKING GOD. KAKUSEI KAKUSEI KAKUSEI OH MFADSKJ GJ

- “HE’S CRYING”

- that was also cool since i didn’t know what galo was going to do at this point. i thought he might join lio in beating the shit out of kray but then he STOPPED him. my friends i was with were like “i really like how the story was about galo’s choices & his actions rather than eveything else” & tbh i can’t analyze anything ever so i didn’t notice but that’s cool

- Deus x machina 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😂😂😂😂😂😂 bro that's FUCKING LAVA LAMP VOLTRON. it was so funny “why did you choose us?” “i didn’t” what would you have done if we didn’t fall directly on top of your lab? “well i guess the world would have ended.” thanks. and then he just was like “well that’s enough” & died

- “Galo Thymos & Lio Fotia, only you two can stop the end of the world.” Aina was standing RIGHT there. like she was RIGHT next to them.

- tbh i did not understand what made galo fireproof at the end.

- i also can’t believe they showed two dudes kissing on the big screen & didn’t play it off as a joke. like i know it was the burnt equivalent of cpr. i know. i know it was galo doing everything he could to bring lio back. but it was a Passionate And Tender Kiss. galo cradled lio’s head & everything. i was dissolving. god they are BROS they are IN LOVE there is OFFICIAL ART OF THEM LIKE GETTING MARRIED

Kumoricon 2019!

It’s been a while, Tumblr!

Don’t worry; my lack of activity has just been ‘cause of Kumoricon this past weekend. I had a blast, but I’m totally exhausted now, and getting back to my responsibilities has felt a little overwhelming after ditching ‘em for a few days 😅

But anyway, Studio Trigger’s Hiromi Wakabayashi, Shigeto Koyama, and Will Feng were all present at the convention, and they graced us attendees with an absolutely wonderful Promare panel on Saturday night! I don’t know when I’ll finish it, but I have a few pages of notes for a post that I’ll get uploaded one of these days....

(Note that this is really just a small sample.)

I was also able to get autographs from Wakabayashi and Koyama at the con, and I gotta say... I feel like this process is so much better than camping outside the Los Angeles Convention Center all night for just the chance at an autograph from these creators at Anime Expo. All I had to do was sign up for an autograph drawing, grab an autograph pass, and then line up during the signing session (which I honestly did like, just 20 minutes before it was over, lol). If y’all ever get the chance to attend a smaller convention featuring these artists, I cannot recommend going for autographs enough. It is an amazing, amazing opportunity.

In my case, my Promare memorial art book came just in time for the con, and both Wakabayashi and Koyama signed their respective pieces for the anthology!

They were both amazed that I had the book at all and informed me that I was the first American they’d seen with it. It’s spoilery, but Studio Trigger even posted a photo of my signed book on their official Twitter account!

The book was hard to come by, admittedly; I had to create an account on tenso.com to get a Japanese address for the Trigger online shop to mail to, I then had to learn how to input this Japanese address with my very limited Japanese, and after all of that, I had to undergo identity verification on the tenso site. Once the book arrived at my Japanese address, I could finally have it shipped to me.

It was quite the complicated process, but my goodness, it was so, so worth it. I was able to buy this beautiful book directly from the creators themselves—something that really pleased Wakabayashi and Koyama when I confirmed that I had indeed purchased the book from Trigger’s online shop! I would wholeheartedly recommend tenso to anyone else who lives out of Japan and wants to directly support Japanese creators.

In regards to other con goodies, I spend so much to be able to get to cons that I don’t tend to come home with too much more than I left with—especially when it comes to things I’m keeping for myself! But even as someone who’s not really a T-shirt kinda person, this year, I couldn’t resist finally picking up a large not-for-sale-on-the-Internet Trigger T-shirt for cozy wearing.

And it really is cozy! The fabric is so soft!

The art itself is by Jenny Kaori, which you can find on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. It’s super cute, and I’m so happy to own a piece of it!

I also couldn’t resist buying @staysocky‘s absolutely precious Galolio charm.

I managed to snag the last one, and oh my goodness. I love them so much 😭

This is all got very long, but I guess in sum: I’ve been to Kumoricon a few times, but I think this was my favorite year yet. There was so much good stuff, and I can’t wait to share my post about the Promare panel with you all!!

[Image descriptions: The first image is a screenshot of some of my notes for the Promare panel at Kumoricon. It reads:

. . . after a firefighter from Yonkers Fire Station in New York, where the team had gone to do research. There is a thanks to the station in the credits of the film.

-Rules for the panel were established. No video recordings or photography were allowed.

-The team showed some promotional images for Promare. There were pictures of Lio and Galo that would go on a magazine. There was also the picture of Lio and Galo in suits, also for a magazine. It was mentioned that the film was finished at the beginning of the year, and they thought they'd be bored right about now, but they're still doing a lot of work for Promare. While the film is finished, they're fixing some parts for the Blu-ray/DVD release. They also mentioned that they'd have a special box for the Blu-ray/DVD release.

-Old concept art for the characters were shown. These sketches were released in a book that is very difficult to get even if you're in Japan, and it was noted that these images do not exist on the Internet at all. They warned everyone there to not upload any pictures from the panel.

-They showed concepts from director Hiroyuki Imaishi. If you've never seen his storyboards before, they're a riot (show images). It was joked that the images weren't children's scribbles but in fact the drawings of a great director.

-Promare began development in 2013, around the time Kill la Kill was finishing its run. It was noted that original anime such as Kill la Kill usually take about 4 years of development. It wasn't stated explicitly, but part of the reason Promare might have taken so long is because of its art style. The outlines in Promare are not black, what Koyama describes as “self-colored lines.” As such, quite a bit of experimentation was needed to get the style of Promare just right.

-One early concept for Promare featured two cop characters. While the cops were the same age, one was a junior cop, and the other was a senior cop. With their different experiences, the idea was to contrast the two's different outlooks.

-In this early concept, the junior cop—who wasn't stated explicitly to be Lio, but I think can be assumed to be Lio (which would make Galo the senior cop, which is a strange thought!)--would meet one of the fire creatures and befriend it. The two would be able to merge or fuse together, which was the original concept of the Burnish. They would become a flame person, whose kanji can be read as “Engine.” As per usual with Nakashima works, there is a love of puns here.

-It was noted that, in this way, the early concept for Promare was much like Kill la Kill. Just as Kill la Kill. . .

The second image is Hiromi Wakabayashi’s autograph to me, which I received at Kumoricon. He wrote in yellow highlighter that’s a little hard to capture on camera. It reads, “WAKA GEEK 2019.11.15 THANKS!”

The third image is Shigeto Koyama’s autograph to me, which I also received at the con. He wrote in black, drawing a small super-deformed Lio and signing his name. Under his signature, he wrote the date as well: 2019 11 15.

The fourth image is an awkward selfie of me wearing the Trigger T-shirt. It says “TRIGGER THUGGER DOLL” at the top and features Miss Trigger with various outfits, weapons, and accessories beside her.

The fifth image is of staysocky’s business card and their Galolio charm, where the characters are super deformed and surrounded by hearts.]

Oh boy this game. I have no words that can even describe how much I LOVE this game. The storytelling was fantastic and I got really invested in not just the main 8 but in all of the minor/side characters too. I know I have Therion, Cordelia, Tressa and Leon specifically but if you want to throw in any of the other characters in the tagset you totally can, same with any side ships (here’s looking **You don't have to include ALL the characters I selected here in your fic, you can mix them up or follow a prompt I have. I only request that you include at least one of the ones picked here <3

I’m kind of open to anything but if you do need a jumping off point (and/or want to see me gush over my favs) check out the prompts below

Therion - I love him and would die for him he is my perfect little trash bandit. It kills me how he longs to belong somewhere but is equally afraid of it for very good reasons. Because of this he’s so heavily guarded and *sobs* his reactions to people (the 8 and Cordelia) genuinely caring about his wellbeing? It just hrrk! I’m so happy I started with him, that I got to see his growth throughout the story and how his emotional wounds finally seem like they’re on their way to healing. Tressa - My adorable little gremlin, she’s such a little badass! While money may be on her mind a lot she’d never cheat anyone! She’s genuinely kind and her travel adventure is so interesting because it’s about exploring the world, experiencing new places—and while she has a certain understanding of this—she learns the true meaning of sentimental value in things. I love her so much. Leon - I love how much of his character is wrapped up in some mystery and that he seems like a tortured but mature soul (as you can see I have a type.) Cordelia - I love Cordelia and she is entirely underrated. She’s been through quite a lot and her faith in my best boy helped him come back into the world able to to trust and love people again. She’s very soft and caring and now that her stolen heirlooms have been restored to her she can come back into the world herself.

Gen ideas:

Tressa and Therion teasing TF out of each other doesn’t matter what about or who about. I just love them and they have such a brosis vibe

Tressa spear fishing and shocking Therion or everyone by it, you can add any and/or all of the characters in the tag. (Inaccurate Tressa, "What? I live in a Port Town my dudes.”)

I know this is cheesy but Therion having his first Apple Pie would destroy me ; __ ; it can be when he’s little or an adult, AU, Canonverse or Canon divergent it can be a Birthday treat to himself, it can be the first thing he pays for with money he earned on his own. If you want to include any character my sign up sheet or want to include any other octo character(s) that’s fine too!

Honestly I will be happy with anything you come up with, there are so many possibilities just know that a heavy angst fic is A-okay by me, but if you want to do a flufflier or humor fic those are also so Very VERY good. I have some ideas below but again like if you have an idea in mind or started something by viewing my likes list go for it!

Lio - Um yes I love him. He’s just such a tortured soul and true cares about people. I like—honestly he is my favorite character. The way he used his flame to protect Galo? How hard he fights for the Burnish? How hard Gueira and Meis fight for him and stop at nothing to save him speaks volumes about the kind of person he is. I just love him and want him to have nice things

Galo - This wonderful brilliant dumbass. I also love him and despite me calling him a dumbass he’s actually pretty with it when it comes to adapting to his environment. He also takes in new information and rather than reject it out right he examines it critically. Like the way he approached Kray about the Burnish experiments was not the smartest… However, he still went to find the truth no matter how much it could have hurt him and that really defines what kind of guy he is.

Gueira & Meis - So unfortunately we didn’t get to see much of these two but what we did get to see was GOLD. I love them, I love how they fight so hard to protect their fellow burnish and how loyal they are to Lio. Like omg when the Burnish were being rounded up but they used the last of their strength to save Lio, believing—knowing that he would come back for them? *hrrk* My heart.

So okay!!! Ideas and/or prompts! Again you don’t have to use these if you don’t want to <3

I'd love to see what was going on with Gueira/Meis while they were locked up side by side. What did they talk about? Their faith in Lio? Them possibly growing up with Lio? Their feels for each other? And honestly you can go as angsty as you want to with this.

Gueira & Meis being over protective (big bros) of their boss and bestie Lio. (Poor Galo lmao)

Crescent Moon - Any

Ah… my poor beautiful tiny manga fandom… I love this 6 volume series so much. The storytelling can be fast paced at times but it doesn't even phase me considering how detailed and intricate the themes, lore, relationships and monsters & magic are. For this fandom anything goes, like any AUs, tropes, canon compliant or divergent is all welcome here.

Bonus points if you have your own take of the song/legend: “Princess Princess why do you cry?”

If you want to make a fic about the Princess and the Demon boy when they were kids, or have any fic at all featuring them (kid or adult) I'm all for it.

I love Mahiru Shiraishi/Mitsuru Suou they are such little disasters anything with them would be amazing but I’m a multishipper so if you have a ship that isn't them and you've been dying to write your ship? Write your ship! I'd love to read it!!!

And anything including Akira is god tier - he is the bestest boy.
