3. rant. just do it

it’s gonna be a pretty shit rant but um first week of the semester and i kinda hated it tbh 🙃 it’s not a blatant like hate hate but ... it’s mainly cos I’m studying IT and it is want I wanted but also, it’s a whole new area for me to learn about and then on top of that, one of the core papers I have to take revolves around Business which in a way I hate cos I hated studying Business in Uni like that’s why I dropped out the first time but then Idk why but a part of me feels like I should go back to studying business cos at least it wasn’t challenging whereas with IT, more so with the maths paper I’m taking, it’s like I have to put in more effort to understand everything, if I even could understand it in the first place like how tf am I feeling some type of imposter’s syndrom this early into the course you know? I really hate saying it but Business/Economics became like a comfort subject that I’m now trying to kinda shake off cos it’s pretty stockholm syndrome (does that even make sense?) and I know if I go back to doing business, it’d be like setting up a personal prison for me in the long run. But I hate that it feels like the only subject I’m capable of succeeding in rn.

4. do you think its ok to separate the artist from the art?

depends on the artist. i think certain artists are fine if the artist if you could kinda seperate their art from their problematic behaviour or if there’s a level of awareness and accountability around their behaviour and growth from it but with someone like R-Kelly, who we know wrote music inspired by his relationships with underaged girls, then it’s a bit of a problem.

25. what’s something you can’t stop buying?

i’ve already answered this, but it also comes to mind that I can’t stop buying a certain sharpie s-gel pen lately. they’re not the best pens though so idk why i keep buying more of them.

Our third class was an interesting one. The topics were related to the nowadays current events and trends, for example the gossip about The Weeknd’s scandalous face bandages as a critique to the world of celebrities and fame, or the Golden Globes nominating “Emily in Paris” but not “I May Destroy You” by Michaela Coel and more...

In my group we focused on a very discussed music video, that was released in August 2020 by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion called “WAP” (aka Wet-Ass Pussy). As you can see from the slides below, we have stated why it was seen as so controversial: it’s very openly sex-positive and it’s coming from two women. Now that is a key element, because the fact that it is stated from two strong ladies makes it even more controversial. Feminism is a way to look at this and deconstruct the matter. Interesting to read some conservative comments from Republicans, James P. Bradley for example said: “Cardi B andMegan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure...”. The song has made the whole world discuss and criticise the two artists for months! Could this be linked to them being females, and females talking about their own bodies and sexual pleasure? It seems like men have been writing about sex and women for a long time, without causing so much chaos in the world 👀 But let’s look at some historical data, which shows us that the music industry is still very much male dominated. In fact, only 10.4% of nominees between 2013 and 2019 were women. So, to conclude this brief presentation about WAP and females in the music industry, it’s important to say that this is a relevant topic in nowadays popular culture since it opens a discussion around female empowerment, freedom and body ownership. To finish off I’d like to state a few things we reflected on in order to make some progress towards a more feminist society. First of all, education around equality and women’s rights. Also, education around their bodies, that should not be made taboo. If a woman doesn’t know about her body, how can she control it, protect it, and advocate for things like healthcare, pleasure...? Women should be free to choose how to use their bodies (artist expression) without men policing them. There could be a lot more to say, but this is an overall of the conversations we had in class.
