Christmas dinner went—perhaps surprisingly for this family—without a hitch. River was even surprised to see Asher keep his face almost entirely neutral as he passed food down to Amir. Even Heaven was well-behaved, eating her pared-down roast as she jabbered away, providing a running commentary of her food to the table.      After dinner, two tablets were pulled out to make video calls; one to Mist, and the other to Sylvie, so they could partially join in with the gift opening. Heaven took charge, of course, running presents from the tree to their designated recipient, enjoying every moment of her ‘job’, even as she started to complain that too many of them weren’t for her.       Nobody said anything about the Rolex sitting out on show on the desk, opened and abandoned earlier in the morning, though River was sure he’d seen Loch roll his eyes. Admittedly, River hadn’t actually intended to buy something so flashy for Chad, but after chickening out earlier in the week and burying the original present back into the depths of his sock drawer, he’d felt the need to replace it and, in his last-minute panic, may have overcompensated a little. Still, it had earned him a little... something in return, so he certainly wasn’t regretting his choice.      He also knew for a fact Loch had spent a pretty penny on Asher’s new gaming computer, and having now met Sylvie, he assumed Bay likely had spoilt her too, so he wouldn’t be accepting any judgement from either of them.      As if timed perfectly with his thoughts, River chuckled to himself as Heaven opened up a present from Sylvie, squealing as she pulled out another designer dress. With a tantrum on the horizon as Bay wearily explained she couldn’t put it on right away, River wondered if he knew just how much trouble he would have on his hands as she got older. Probably, as Bay gave Sylvie a Look as she giggled at the toddler on the other side of the screen.      River scanned the room, watching each of them in their own happy bubble; Asher beaming at Loch, hands entwined; Amir absently stroking Sky’s belly as she sat snuggled in his lap; Bay’s resigned sigh as he gave up, to the cheers of Heaven and Sylvie.       A family of simps, the lot of us, he thought, smiling to himself as he leaned his head on Chad’s shoulder.
