The Soft Boys Scrapbook
Give it (back) to the Soft Boys! Something very cool popped up on Kimberley Rew's website recently — The Soft Boys Scrapbook, a fascinating digital cornucopia of ephemera that Kim gathered from his original late 70s/early 80s run with the band. Tons of neat stuff, from candid photos to reviews (both rave and not) to concert listings to handwritten setlists and beyond. If you dig the Soft Boys, you'll dig this.
You'll probably want a soundtrack as you browse, too — so why not click play on the Soft Boys at Lady Mitchell Hall in Cambridge in late 1978? This scorching set may be the great lost double live LP from Robyn Hitchcock and co.; it's a pro recording and a few tracks have slipped out on various comps and reissues over the decades. But to hear it in full is to hear The Soft Boys at the most manically glorious, blending the Byrds with Beefheart, Barrett with the VU. A sound I'll never get tired of, that's for sure.

The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (1980)
I know this LP like the back of my hand, but I’d never wondered who played the fantastic violin on this tune and Insanely Jealous.  It was Gerry Hale.
Didn't see the giant squid, though It was fairly slow

109: The Soft Boys // Underwater Moonlight

Underwater Moonlight The Soft Boys 1980, Armageddon
Robyn Hitchcock’s whole face/skull situation is a phrenologist’s dream, the kind of knobby high-concentrate Englishness fantasy artists love to draw as goblins or animate oak trees. It’s probably only within the particular resonating chambers of that dome that Hitchcock’s brand of pervert psychedelia could’ve formed: a stream of withering invective as clever as that of Elvis Costello but filtered through Jabberwockian riddle-speak. The key is that Hitchcock delivers his peculiar barbs (e.g. “In the physical kingdom of time / I guess that your dish is full of slime”) with such savage amusement you feel you should know what he means, and eventually you find that you sort of do. It helps also that he was as gifted a melodist as any the punk generation produced, and that Underwater Moonlight bears his most generous collection of hooks.

Some of Hitchcock's notable film work.
The Soft Boys might’ve found Cheap Trick- (or at least Raspberries-) sized success with sparkly gems like “Tonight” and “I Wanna Destroy You” if Hitchcock had the capacity to play things straight lyrically. But that’d be like imagining In the Aeroplane Over the Sea without all the jizz and Anne Frank: missing the point completely. It’s better by far to splash headlong into the alternative world where “The Queen of Eyes” topped the UK singles chart for 28 weeks and there are signs at Guitar Center warning you not to play the Arabian scale solo from “Underwater Moonlight.”

Back in our reality, the Soft Boys would break up not long after issuing an incredible final single (“Only the Stones Remain”), and Hitchcock would embark on a consistently strange and prolific solo career, while guitarist Kimberley Rew wrote himself a pretty good pension with his next project, Katrina & the Waves (a better band than you probably remember!).

Fairly ⭐🌜
(Note: I wrote for no reason other than I could)
It was near midnight and the night life made quiet noise, cricket chirps, low snore, and soft wind blowing through the slight open window. Suddenly he moved, rustling the blankets and sheets with his hands, searching til those warm hands found you. His body moved closer so his arm could wrap around you, which you didn't mind since he was nice and warm. Which made you question "has he always been this warm? ", a howl in the distance sounded beautiful, even more when more howls sounded off after the first then quiet. He got up slightly only to use you as a pillow, he'd done so a few times since you both had been together. It was quite sweet, he had unknowingly done it, you touch him softly then close your eyes accepting the body warmth, so soothing.
