What did you think of fma live action? Is it worth watching?

Thank you for asking!! Honestly I’m touched that someone would care what I have to say

First of all, I want to shout out gomboc123 once again (and wrongnote earlier in the evening) for streaming the movie. They absolutely didn’t have to, and regardless of whether people liked or disliked it, it was very thoughtful, and it was fun to watch the movie with other people!

I went into the movie not expecting much. I actually didn’t plan on watching it at all, because I didn’t want it to ruin my mental image of the series, if that makes sense? But because I expected so little--and because I had nothing better to do with my evening--I decided to watch it. If you expect the movie to hold up to Brotherhood’s standard, then no, I do not recommend watching it. If you don’t have much time to watch movies and you’d have to sacrifice some study/sleep time to watch it, then no, I do not recommend it. But if you have low expectations or just want to know what happens, then sure, go for it. Even then I wouldn’t highly recommend it to anyone, since I wasn’t the hugest fan of it.

I am glad I found the time/attention span to watch the movie, just because I wanted to be able to analyze it and compare it to BH. Obviously it wasn’t going to hold up to BH’s standard, but I think the movie was disappointing on a few different levels. Without providing any spoilers to the actual story, here are my main issues with the film. Note that these points do include descriptions of some of the characters.

I would never have wanted or expected the producers to fit 64 episodes into one movie. Ideally, 5 movies would have been awesome, but even 2 would have been maybe possibly doable. But the producers did this weird in-between thing, where they took tiny pieces of the plot from all over the series (as early as episode 1 and as late as episode 53) and tried to mush them together without actually making the story coherent.

The producers had to get rid of a lot of characters in order to make the story fit. That’s understandable, but I can’t say I understand why they threw out some characters. The Xing crew? Scar? Pride, Sloth, Wrath or Greed? Father and Hohenheim, the true main characters of the anime? Don’t know them, sorry.

Along the same vein, a couple characters got way too much screentime. My biggest grievance was with Tucker. He went from being a pretty minor villain to returning as a major villain and even getting his own melodramatic monologue. The screentime he got could have easily been redirected to one of the characters I listed above.

Riza and Alphonse really get the short stick in terms of character development. Alphonse is really submissive for some reason, and just passively goes along with the story. He doesn’t show much emotional or autonomy at all. He exists more as a little brother and not really as his own person. And don’t even get me started on his lack of emotion during the Nina scene.

Riza has always been more on the stoic side, but the film just makes her this :| person in the background who just watches everything Roy does. She lacks the depth that the anime gives her, and she’s largely turned into a damsel in distress, minus one scene near the end. Even one of her scenes defending Roy is reversed so Roy is saving her instead.

Remember how Brotherhood spent a LOT of screentime showing Roy’s struggle with giving into his broken anger or forgiving? Remember how long the characters spend trying to prevent Roy from turning into a vengeful monster? Well, fuck all that lol the producers didn’t give a shit

So those are my main vague criticisms. I would love to elaborate on them more, but I don’t want to spoil anything! All of that said, here are a few things I liked about the movie:

Watching it via stream was a fun experience, since I could discuss the movie with other people!

I was interested in watching the movie for the sole purpose of comparing it to Brotherhood, and I definitely think the movie renewed my appreciation for Arakawa-sensei’s storytelling.

Winry’s acting was really great. Her performance during the “Created Feelings” segment of the movie really sold the scene to me, when Edward/Alphonse’s performances felt lacking to me.

Hughes was fantastic, as always.

Hughes’ death scene had a really cool twist to it, and I think the way they shot and revealed the twist was really well-done. We were all screaming in the chat!

I hope this was helpful! This is all just my opinion, so if you want to watch the movie, then by all means please do! But if you’re short on time or don’t really like watching movies unless they’re really good, then hopefully this helps you decide. :)

Critical Technical Practice

Explanation of poster: My poster towards violence specifically in the Auckland region is to identify not only the victims that are being verbally and physically abused, but to acknowledge the idea that people today have in their minds, that all problems are solved once the government acts upon it; Or creates a law to have consequences upon people who are violent towards others. Violence is still happening with laws in place. Having the governments influence is important, but shouldn’t be the only solution to this issue. People must WANT to make the change for themselves if they know their behavior is illegal. In my opinion, I think that social groups today should be targeting more specifically on helping others be aware of their actions, and taking accountability for their actions. Throwing a person in jail isn’t helping the individual for their crime. Communicating, and showing them the impact their actions cause allows them to be more aware and respectful towards other human beings in future. Building compassion to respect people is key, not locking them in a cell and hoping for the best.

Reflection:

After reading Philip E Agre’s reflection toward Critical Technical Practice about ten times, I managed to interpret his writings and write detailed notes about each of his paragraphs. The main idea’s I gathered were:

- Technology is everywhere and continuously aiming to reinvent what has come before it. We must understand what has already been done so that we can be successful when creating in the future.

- Technology will always be contributing to the growth of knowledge and evolution within practice.

- Technology can be a way to solve issues we currently face in the world today. But it can’t be done without dedication and hard work towards the creative practice itself. Repetition of reflection and prototyping methods aid creating successful work.

- Critical technical practice is made up of design + innovation of work AND original ideas/plans + purpose/intentions/outcomes + critique/reflection. They both play a part.

From reading this, I used his ideas to help draft a procedure for myself for working not only on the boot-camp work during ICT, but also for the procedure we used for creating our final studio submission.

In relation to our theme within the boot-camp exercise, (Violence within Auckland), I began to identify the issue. Researching what violent issues/events have actually happened within Auckland, New Zealand and in general. Agre’s text has taught me that to solve issues, we must first understand what the issue is, what or who it is made up of, and what or who it is impacting. For example, with violence within Auckland, I researched what type of violence specifically is more common, and what type of victims are being impacted. I found that the most common type of violence was physical abuse against women and children within the Auckland South region.

From here I went onto researching what was causing the violence in the first place. Was it alcohol or drug use Or did it have something to do with a mental illness or behaviour disorder? Agre’s text has allowed me to think differently towards new issues that we face in general and with technology. I have learned to pick apart situations in a more in-depth way, by breaking down the issue in a process where I can create a way to make a solid solution.

From here my research led to the conclusion that physical and verbal violence specifically was mostly alcohol related, which then in turn affected the persons behaviour. Some individuals do have emotional disorders that affect their behaviour which can lead to abuse of some kind against others without alcohol consumption at all, but most commonly alcohol is the key factor towards physical abuse.

Now that I had identified my issue, who it impacts and what the cause is of the issue, I can now begin to craft a way to create a solution. I went on to researching ways to help prevent the violence with all this knowledge in mind. I found some online such as panic alarm buttons, and impenetrable clothing items. But I also came up with some solutions of my own that I could aid society in protection against violence, such as having violence protection imbedded in the school curriculum. Giving younger generations knowledge of how to protect themselves and how to prevent violence in the future. Or child friendly games as a physical approach to teaching children about violence. Also games directed at people who have already committed violence to help change their approach to people in the future.

In conclusion, the text we read after I could understand it, allowed me to think more critically towards issues we face in today’s society. Rather than focusing on making a pretty garment to solve all world problems, I picked a part one step at a time starting very basic by researching violence in general and in Auckland, and figure out what exactly the factors were that was allowing the violence to take place, and then coming up with a tactful solution to the issue with that knowledge in mind.

Final Evaluation

I feel that my breadth of research for this project was very large and had many different avenues. My project originally started with research into self image and authenticity, which took a turn to focus specifically on mothers as a symbol of unconditional love due to my own input as a designer. In my opinion it was appropriate to ask myself the question of “what makes me most comfortable and happy with myself” they answer being “my mum”. I am happy that my own input influenced the direction of my project as I feel I have been able to establish who I am as a designer and be in full control of the outcomes instead of letting other peoples research or design influence my choices. In general, I looked at a lot of photo series’ such as Epidermis by Sophie Harris Taylor, which focus on empowering and celebrating something. This is where my desire to celebrate mother, daughter relationships stemmed from. More specifically, my design decisions for the photo book were controlled by the questionnaire I created for daughters, I let the submissions guide my outcomes as the content gathered was ultimately the most important thing. On the other hand, my design decisions for the main text stemmed from the article I sourced on oprahmag.com called ‘The Double-Edged Mother’, as well as editorial inspiration gathered on Behance and Pinterest.

As mentioned previously, my project has gone through a lot of changes. Originally I was focusing more specifically on self image and how mothers are a vital part in encouraging us to embrace ourselves. However, as the project naturally developed and took different turns I felt it was appropriate to focus more on appreciation of the bond daughters have with there mothers, highlighting that this relationship can be difficult sometimes but important none the less. All the content included now focuses more on daughters showing gratitude for their mothers, for everything- not just making them love themselves. As my project started to stabilise the designs still went through changes, big and small- up until this moment. I constantly printed the outcomes and refined from these.

Under the circumstances I feel I managed my time well, perhaps better at home than at University as there was less distractions. I posted on my blog as the project developed which prevented them from getting backed up and me forgetting what I wanted to say. This made the creation of my process book much easier; I worked on my process once or twice a week and this schedule worked well for me. As it has come up to hand in I don’t feel rushed or under pressure to get things in on time and I think this is due to me planning my weeks in advance.

Regarding feedback, I feel I have responded well. Sometimes there were elements of my design that I loved, yet a pair of fresh eyes highlighted problems that I would have not seen myself. Despite being open to suggestions, I have made my own decisions as a designer to keep working on certain elements- for example the tracing paper tip-ins in the main text. Although I agree they were lacking purpose, I took the time to re-evaluate them and feel that now they focus specifically on the flowers, and are a really poignant part of the design.

As a young creative, there are always areas of my design process that need more practice and can be better. I found myself struggling slightly with grids and layout, sometimes not being able to visualise a grid that would work best- If I were to improve on this, it would save me a lot of time in the future and essentially make for better design. The last area of my design process that needs work is binding. Although this was very difficult at home, the binding could have still been neater and tighter so next year I am going to focus on practicing my stitch binding where I have the facilities to do so.

I have learnt a lot from this project! The first thing being how to professionally and efficiently discuss my work on Microsoft Teams. Working online had definitely been different, but helpful none the less. In industry I am sure there are many occasions where meetings will be taken online, so this experience will come in handy and make me feel less awkward talking through a screen. Furthermore, I have continued to develop my understanding on typographic handling and come across a lot of design websites that I will refer to in the future! Lastly, I have learnt now more than ever- to trust the process.

On reflection, there are a couple of improvements I would have made to my design. The main one being printing on my chosen card stock, as this would have elevated the publications further ; however this was not possible for me as my printer only takes lightweight paper. I would have also looked at binding the two publications together as I feel this would have communicated the strong bond between mother and daughter better than a belly band and really packaged the publications as if they belong. Logistically, I wasn’t going to be able to do this at home, but in industry I am sure there would be a solution that allowed this. Lastly, it could have been nice to include more mothers and daughters in the photo book as well as more personal stories in the main text. Despite these changes, I feel really happy with the outcomes- I normally dislike my designs by the time it comes to hand in, but this time I feel proud of what I have achieved- especially in the circumstances.

At a prep school in the Midwest about 15 years ago, a freshman on the school’s football team was introduced to a disturbing locker room hazing ritual. After a practice one day, the player was sitting on a bench in the locker room and felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned his head to discover a senior was standing behind him nude and holding his penis against the freshman’s shoulder. The freshman jerked his shoulder down and quickly stood up, finding not only the senior but the entire rest of the team watching him.

“Did you see what that faggot tried to do?” the senior asked the crowd behind him, then told the freshman: “Don’t be such a pussy.” Embarrassed and confused, the freshman did not respond. He quickly gathered his stuff and rushed away.

The freshman feared being further humiliated and teased at school the next day. Much to his surprise, no one — not on the team or outside the team — brought up the incident. This silence left him confused and feeling alone. After a few days, staying quiet about what happened became too intense, and he finally told his mother his story.

When the incident came out in the open, the community erupted. Though a few teachers demanded that the senior be punished, the vast majority of students, teachers, and families characterized the incident as “a joke” or “just boys being boys.” The blame eventually was placed on the freshman for making a big deal out of what was widely considered nothing and for going against the social norm of keeping incidents like this under wraps.

The senior ultimately faced no consequences for his actions. His victim, however, ended up moving to another school to escape the ridicule he endured for speaking up.

This was just one incident I uncovered in my 20 years researching elite high schools and universities. Throughout my interviews, I’ve heard stories like this too often. I started my research journey to answer questions I had about the culture of elite schools as a private school teacher.

Growing up in poverty in rural Kentucky, I found myself in an unfamiliar world. I used ethnography — extensive interviews and observations in several schools in the Midwest and Northeast — to make sense of this world. Since then, I continue to explore what lifelong lessons students learn through the culture of these schools.

This month, the larger public has gained insight into this private, elite world through the confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh’s integrity has been thrown into question by an allegation of sexual assault that occurred when Kavanaugh was a student at Georgetown Prep, an elite private high school in Maryland. Christine Blasey Ford, a former student at another Maryland private school and now a psychology professor, accused him of pinning her to a bed and covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming during a party when she was 15 years old.

A second allegation against Kavanaugh has surfaced from a Yale classmate who claims that Kavanaugh exposed himself and thrust his penis in her face during their first year at the university. A third person has come forward alleging that Kavanaugh was one of a group of boys who were present at parties where multiple women were “gang raped,” including herself, while in high school. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations.

The details of incidents like this, where abusive behavior is systemically kept quiet, vary, but they similarly bring to the surface the lessons that privileged students are indoctrinated with at a young age. These lessons are conduits of power, facilitating ways of knowing and doing that preserve and protect a culture of hyper-masculinity, elitism, and entitlement.

The culture of elite schools encourages sexual assaults and humiliation as well as covering them up. As Kavanaugh put it himself during a speech three years ago at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, “what happens at Georgetown Prep stays at Georgetown Prep.”

Once the allegations were made public, his classmates and others who defended him characterized what happened in similar ways that I’ve heard as a researcher. In protecting this culture and all that is deeply entrenched in it, they dismissed his actions with the same tiring adage “boys will be boys.” The subtext of such messages is clear: We shouldn’t be talking about their actions or the toxic culture that facilitates such actions. Silence is demanded yet again.

Silence is what keeps the culture of elite schools so hidden from public view. These schools are often viewed as “the best of the best” — superior, distinctive, distinguished, and exceptional — and play a pivotal role in producing the next generation of leaders of one kind or another.

Elite schools spend a considerable amount of time and resources projecting a positive public image. Their image is necessary for legitimizing the elite status that they enjoy and all the advantages that come along with that status. Silence is necessary to maintain this image. All the not-so-good parts must remain hidden to continue being viewed as the best of the best.

This positive image obfuscates the real purpose of elite schools: From their inception, the core function of elite schools is to make, remake, or advance the socioeconomic status of each student. They provide students access to a social circuit that allows them to go from one elite institution to another and eventually on to high-paying and high-power positions.

Within this circuit, elite schools cultivate privilege — a lens through which students come to understand themselves, others, and the world around them. Students’ values, perspectives, assumptions, and actions are shaped and sustained through this lens. It helps them survive and thrive within the elite circuit.

Above all, these lessons teach students that hierarchies are not only natural but necessary. They learn that there is a winner and therefore a loser in every situation and interaction. Hierarchies enable and propel them to success. Their success, it is worth noting, always comes at the expense of others.

As a teacher once told me during my research: “The most important thing we do here is prepare our students to become tough competitors. Competition is not a dirty word at our school. There are winners and there are losers. We teach them to be the former.”

Privilege is reinforced in every aspect of students’ educational experiences: the school’s ideals, missions, and standards; admissions practices; interactions within classrooms; involvement in extracurricular activities; the rigors of a demanding curriculum; and participation in sporting competitions, social events, and rituals. Rituals, in particular, are effective in transmitting and reinforcing unspoken cultural expectations, behavioral norms, and values that cultivate privilege as a collective identity and further impose hierarchies.

When these rituals become public, such as an alleged rape that occurred at the annual “Screw” dance at New Hampshire prep school St. Paul’s in 2014, we learn what some of these rituals are truly about: celebrating male sexual conquest.

Students carry the lessons about exerting power and privilege that they are taught in multiple contexts and situations through their education with them in these rituals, both the ones that are school-sponsored and the ones they perform when adults aren’t around. These rituals are often sexually charged, sometimes violent, and usually about proving manhood. And they always reflect the hyper-masculine and hyper-competitive culture of their schools.

The privileged lessons central to preserving and protecting the culture of elite schools go against what they commonly claim to teach students: positive and constructive social interactions, compassion, care toward others, high moral character, integrity, and responsible participation in the world. Many students that attend these schools go on to do great things and live out these values. But that doesn’t excuse the bad behavior of some of their classmates.

For us to better understand the culture surrounding the allegations against Kavanaugh, we must have a better understanding of what lessons elite schools are actually teaching their students and how these lessons perpetuate that culture. It’s time to break the silence and pay closer attention to the places that are preparing our next generation of leaders.
