There are strata, you know? There are writers I think are genuinely bad and lazy and offensively overrated. Hemingway, Bret Easton Ellis, Ginsberg (and galloping not far behind, his little pal Kerouac) make me hiss. I just... can’t. I will go to my bookstore and I will turn the umpteenth tacky edition of A Moveable Feast or worse—Howl—on its belly so that the innocent bystander will not have garbage shoved down their throat unwittingly.

To a lower, less rabid degree, there are writers who irk me. I understand that they have something to offer stylistically, but there’s something slimy about the undercurrent, something that makes me itch. Anne Sexton particularly comes to mind. Marguerite Duras has an even more impressive, to-die-for voice, but once you listen to the words, really listen—well. I also find Victor Hugo insufferable as soon as he’s delving into autobiographical or tries to characterise women, but I love his Notre-Dame de Paris, so it’s ambivalent. I made the mistake of reading his letters, to be fair, and it ruined everything.

Super niche, but there’s also a few translation studies old men that make me slam my wine glass on the coffee table, namely those who delight in gunning others’ translations down and call it ‘scholarship’, and/or those who came up with the shit metaphors about ‘womanly natural infidelity’ and casual rape culture in relation to translational practice. J. R. Ladmiral is one of those (I had the dubious pleasure of being taught by him for two years and I was this really angry kid at the back of the auditorium exclaiming ‘excuse me???!’ then raising my hand for an hour in the hopes that I’d get the opportunity to rant at him in my shrillest voice.)

Anyway. I work on that stuff, I do, but I’m an angry little shrew.

Ella The Sorting Hat VII

Just found this in my drafts. Hasnt been edited since I wrote it what was probably years ago. Enjoy. So, I’ve been holding off on doing Keefe because, personally, it’s really hard for me to sort him, and I’ve been going around and around and around in circles trying to figure out which house he’d be sorted into. I mean, he could literally fit in any of them. And I mean any house. Let’s start with Hufflepuff, because I think it’s the easiest to rule out. Hufflepuffs value hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Keefe is lazy, inconsistent, and he cheats like no other because, as we learn throughout the books, Keefe likes to win. Yes, he is very loyal to his friends, and he definitely values that loyalty. We see it tearing him apart in Neverseen, when he’s coming to terms with the fact that his mother used him to spy on his friends all those years. But valuing loyalty isn’t enough to make him a Hufflepuff. So sadly, my house is out. Next let’s look at Slytherin. Keefe is incredibly clever. All his pranks, his witty dialogue, snappy comebacks, and light humor prove this. However, Lord Cassius is a textbook Slytherin. He’s clever, ambitious, ruthless, and resourceful. He knows how to spin any situation to his advantage. And bottom line, Keefe doesn’t want to be anything like his father. Remember in the books how Harry’s strong aversion to Draco Malfoy was the main reason the Sorting Hat didn’t place him in that house? After all, Slytherin was the first name it suggested. Keefe’s aversion to being like his father in any way would probably be enough to completely rule out this house as a possibility. Some say Keefe is a Gryffindor. And yes, he does have Gryffindor traits. He’s brave in the face of danger and adversity, he’s incredibly loyal to his friends through thick and thin, he’s got nerve to spare, and he’s very chivalrous, offering Sophie his cloak and making sure to always keep her safe. And like Fred and George Weasley, he’s a bit of a class clown. Or class troublemaker. But unlike Fred and George, Keefe has a passion for knowledge. Why do you think he gets so invested in helping Sophie? Because he wants to know what’s going on. He also thinks she’s cute, and she’s his friend, but if he wasn’t genuinely interested, he wouldn’t spend so much time trying to decipher those clues from the Black Swan. And he spends plenty of time writing clues of his own (which ACTUALLY rhyme. I'm looking at you Forklenator). Which brings us to the last possible house and our conclusion: Keefe Sencen is a Ravenclaw. I don’t come to this conclusion simply be process of elimination. Yes, he doesn’t fit in any of the other houses, but unexpectedly, I think Keefe would fit in with the Ravenclaws. He’s effortlessly smart. So smart he doesn’t have to study to do well. But he still does care about doing well. He might not show it, or flaunt the fact that he’s smart, but he does well enough to stay in the school. Which means above a 75% on midterms (I think) and above an 80% on finals (I think). Keefe is incredibly clever. And in order to get into the Ravenclaw common room you have to answer a riddle. Doesn’t that sound like Keefe? Protecting his secrets not only with changing passwords but changing riddles? And along with this cleverness is a sharp tongue and a wit that tends to get him into some trouble. He’s intuitive. Empathy is a power for intuitive people, people who are constantly observing the world around them and figuring out what the signs mean in the people and world around them. Keefe always knows what Sophie and the rest of their friends are feeling, not just because hes an empath but because he's a good friend who pays attention. Not to mention, Ravenclaws will go to great lengths to support their friends. Remember when Luna Lovegood bewitched a hat into a life-size lion’s head to support Ron? Or when Cho supported Melanie even after she betrayed Dumbledore’s Army? Well, Keefe crossed an ocean, did a ton of research, and is constantly supporting Sof even when she doesn't know. He pulls elaborately planned pranks. But they’re well thought out, and even though he gets his share of detentions, he’s careful to never leave behind any incriminating evidence. After all, has Dame Alina ever found evidence he was the mastermind behind the Great Gulon Incident? I think not.

Winter Anime 2019 Part 3: High on Concept

If you wait long enough, you’ll find something good to say.

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue / My Roommate is a Cat

What: Misanthropic mystery author picks up tough stray cat, both get healed.

✅ The cat acts like a cat, the misanthrope acts like a misanthrope.

✅ The approach of telling the same simple story from the perspective of two characters that can’t really communicate effectively is interesting.

✅ This is very basic, but it works. I like both characters, and it's generally inoffensive. Pretty much Barakamon with less of a focus on telling you exactly what to feel. Might watch more of this.

❌ I see we’re now at the point where shows get localized titles that sound like lazy translations of bland Japanese names even when the Japanese title is not that bland to begin with. Lovely.

Dimension High School

What: A bunch of kids press XXX and YYY and are sucked. Wooow.

✅✅ The wraparound segments look extremely realistic. If there was more lensflares and shots of feet I’d almost say someone has finally beaten KyoAni in making anime look like a cheap, egregiously overacted J-Drama.

❌❌ Sadly, the puzzle dimension they end up in just looks like homemade MMD animation, because it is. I mean, at least it’s mocapped, but apparently with a Kinect.

❌❌ E.g., they make jokes about clipping and they kinda have to because everything clips into everything else all the time.

❌❌ Did I mention that all they actually do is solve lame puzzles and fail to be funny about it? It’s really getting to the levels of the dreaded “barely animated voice actor improv podcast” at these points.

♎ Suwabe’s in it, and that’s never an outright bad thing. He’s voicing the quizmaster, in the process proving he’d do anything for a paycheck. I wonder if he has a fiverr acocunt.

Domestic na Kanojo

What: Highschooler loses virginity to one night stand, finds out that it was the sister of the teacher he has a crush on. Incidentally, the mother of both also just married his father. Zany!

✅ This is presented like a low-key, slow drama, and it’s not even bad at that. Some good directing going on here, at least in the beginning.

❌❌ Really just too bad that it’s impossible to take seriously with a setup as contrived as this, not to mention taking it as seriously as it apparently wants to be taken. It’s also not exactly original.

❌ I’m not gonna say that sketchy relationships can’t work (it worked fine for KoiAme, for example), but embedding your suddenly also incestuous pupil-teacher affair in the setting of a harem comedy, complete with other sister walking in on attempted drunk blackout kiss, is not giving me confidence that this has the chops to pull it off.

❌❌ The show this reminds me the most of is Love and Lies, and that’s a real bad calling card to have.

Girly Air Force

What: Girl-shaped fighter jets fall in love with a dude.

❌❌ It’s just another military-hardware-is-cute-girls-actually show in the vein of Strike Witches, the kind where they think that having a few plane CG models is already thrilling content.

❌❌ But then it doesn’t even turn out to be that in practice, because most of the episode is taken up by lame “worldbuilding” (i.e., coming up with excuses for why your fanservice show has to be the way it is) and trying to make your bland harem lead interesting, which is a futile endeavour.

❌ The most interesting part is still the CG dogfighting, such as it is. It’s not great either. Also, girly planes are pink.

♎ Honestly got a laugh out of them randomly picking a Gripen as heroine unit  in addition to actual JSADF hardware, because that’s a sleek-looking plane. The biggest prank the JSADF ever pulled on the otaku industry is buying the chubby F-35, which is nowhere to be seen here.

Go-toubun no Hanayome / The Quintessential Quintuplets

What: Empoverished highschooler is hired as a tutor for some rich quintuplets with large breasts.

❌ This is a blatant harem setup that would make a 2003 bishoujo VN blush.

✅ However, in practice it’s much better than it sounds. It knows it’s a wacky romcom with a dumb premise and it does not pretend otherwise.

✅ So it’s lighthearted, but it’s also surprisingly classy. In fact, it’s classier than Domestic no Kanojo, which is a show that’s actually trying to look respectable and failing.

✅ The relationships are also very feisty, with an energy that a comedy needs. There’s a lot of sass to go around here. Probably the best of these I’ve seen in a while, so I’ll give it three eps.

Kemurikusa

What: After getting pulled off the sequel, the Kemono Friends crew made their own version. Presumably there are blackjack and hookers in this show’s future.

❌ If you are a fan of KF’s “charms”, fear not, you would not be able to tell these people made another anime before. It's still total amateur hour.

❌❌ It’s not even the “looks”, though those certainly are not a highlight. The design is okay and the animation is bad, but I’m not incapable of enjoying shows with bad animation. What really kills it is the editing. I usually don’t comment on editing because that’s almost always competent and only very rarely great, but Kemurikusa has uniquely lazy and badly timed editing. Every shot being seconds longer than it needs to be is already an annoyance in low-key dialog scenes, but the alleged action is laughable and allows you a long, unblinking stare at every frame of bad animation. I really do wonder why they even bother with it when it’s so terrible.

✅ The setting seems alright, even though it’s just a reskinned Kemono Friends. At least it’s not gijinka nonsense this time (which makes one wonder where the gimmick characters are supposed to come from, but I digress), and it’s more upfront about what it actually is too. I’d call it mildly intriguing.

❌ I don’t mind mystery and certainly prefer it to exposition bombs, but instead of that this episode quickly establishes the most basic facts... and then repeats them over and over and over some more. Combined with non-editing, this makes for horrible pacing. 

♎ I had no opinion on KF’s longer-term qualities, because the first episode was so boring I never got any further. I won’t have an opinion on this show’s long-term qualities for the same reason.

Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka

What: Magical girls are tragic, shoot gun’s.

❌❌ Yo bro, what if magical girls but dark? Surely such a thing has never been attempted.

❌ The particular source of grim here is that these girls are war vets and fight with semi-realistic weaponry, so there’s a fair bit of the ol’ milwank in this one as well.

❌ The best part of the entire show is that the enemies they originally fought looked like cute teddy bears. Of course, this is dropped in favor of just slicing and dicing some random terrorists in the main narrative. I guess “dark magical girl” is still too outlandish a concept, gotta go with ripping off The Punisher again.

❌ The characters so far are nothing special, you got your PTSD Rambo and the generically cute tomodachis she swears to protect. Such contrast!

❌❌ If you must make these 80s action movies with some otaku gimmick pasted on top, would you mind making the action look good at least? Because I don’t care how many gallons of blood you paint in your dramatic but conspicuously non-moving pans.

Meiji Tokyo Renka

What: Spiritually sensitive lonelygirl gets kitsuned to the Meiji era, which is full of delicious beef and some handsome men too I guess.

✅ This isn’t an outright comedy, but it goes all in on everyone’s fabulosity level to a degree that it’s really already three quarters to Dame x Prince.

✅ Similarly, the lead is not quite as unimpressed with these hams as Ani was, but she certainly has a lot more interest in roast beef than in these guys always trying to pull her into sparkly chin-holding poses &c.

✅ Meiji Tokyo Renka doesn’t seem to be anything special, but it gets the tone right and is expressive enough to not become boring.

♎ While certainly watchable right now, with these there’s always the chance that it decides to launch into real drama in the long run, which in turn almost always goes wrong.

Yakusoku no Neverland / The Promised Neverland

What: An orphanage’s happy daily life gets upended by the realisation that they’re just pizza rolls for some demonic entities.

✅ I watched this right after Kemurikusa and let me tell you, it sure helps if you’ve got professionals on the team. This is a highly competent show as far as cinematography and editing is concerned. While there isn’t any reason to go all out on the action sakuga, this show looks real good.

❌ I’m not feeling the character design, to be specific I think everyone’s chin is too big. This sounds like a real assholy nitpick, but be aware that this will impact around 90% of the time you watch this. 

✅ The premise is workable for a shounen manga, even if hardly original (remember Owari no Seraph?) At least it’s not kids with superpowers spamming beams at each other while discussing the nature of heroism, and seems to be going for a more mindgames-based approach in the vein of Death Note. The characters are just barely good enough so far. In the end it’s not so much the premise, but how well the production values are able to sell it. And that’s what Neverland is good at.

❌ It’s specifically a Weekly Shounen Jump manga, and that is huge red flag. Sure enough, while the visuals and mood deliver, the dialog writing justifiably assumes the reader is a moron. Almost every line in this is either straight universe exposition or someone reading someone else’s character sheet back to them. It’s insane and not even necessary because their actions establish all of this just fine, but hey, WSJ readers amirite?

❌ Also, since it’s a successful WSJ property, don’t expect an ending or be prepared to watch this show for years. Most likely both.

♎ This seems like it could be entertaining once the exposition is out of the way and the real meat of the narrative starts. Then again, at that point pacing would come into play, which is yet another achilles heel of WSJ-style shounen manga. Against my better judgement, I’ll probably have a look how this develops, but I don’t expect much.

at four I could read as fast as my grandmother who then complained that I pretended to not know as well because laziness

I also had read from back to bottom the simplified editions of aeneid/iliad/odyssey I was given for my birthday

at five I read those and four different collections of greek myths not to mention every single fairytale book that got thrown my way and I actually could have recited you by heart the above three for how much I read them

the first **serious** book I read ie not reduced stuff and so on was little women when I was six and I hated it because I thought it was boring as hell but that’s not the point

I read notre dame de paris full version no cuts whatsoever (translated ofc but whatever) when I was eight fyi

by the time I was eight I also explicitly asked for wwii-themed history books for christmas so I’ll inform you that by then I had read more nonfiction about the topic than half of my elementary school teachers

who also hated me because I corrected them more than once when they were saying wrong stuff in history, greek mythology or egyptian mythology - spoilers I didn’t even care about it that much

at six I actually did read the newspaper from beginning to end, not just the headlines

and actually when I was six I read on the newspaper that nike used child labor to sew footballs ie people my age and I decided then that I was never going to give them money and I haven’t owned one piece of nike sportswear ever in my life (yes I know they got better now but not the point)

I also had read the entire sherlock holmes collection of novels/stories back to back twenty times before I turned nine

same for all of edgar allan poe’s short stories

before I was six I had definitely read all of the grimm fairytales - with my mom fine but it was the two of us and it was the entire 400+ pages book ;)

when I was eight I solved my issues with having to do homework throughout the year by reading through my history book from beginning to end once at the beginning of the year, and then never opened it until the end. well, I remembered it so well I always got top grades and I didn’t have to study history doing anything else other than that until I finished elementary school :)

oh, and I usually finished books in one or two days at most unless they were specifically long ones, even when I was six :)

idk if it counts to you but since I grew up on opera before I was six I knew at least one by heart without needing to read it and I could have sung you half of the magic flute in swedish because it was translated in swedish in the movie that I watched every other day, and the other half in german because it was my favorite opera ;) and by the time I learned to write (when I was five btw! I learned before I went to elementary school) I could have totally transcribed don giovanni for you by heart but nvm that ;)

I mean, that’s like 30% of what I was doing before I turned eleven, but like... I’ll answer all your questions in one post because I doubt I’d be able to come up with new questions for all three of the tags, haha  But since this will be super long, you’ll find it under the cut! 

First up, @bibliophilecats​‘ questions: 

1. What is your favourite movie and/or TV show based on a book? I’m not sure I have one, there’s nothing that immediately comes to mind at least. So I’ll just tell you about the first one I ever saw (when I was a kiddo still): Emil und die Dedektive! (based on the novel by Erich Kästner)  2.  When you just can’t get into a book, do you quit or do you finish every book you start, no matter what?  As embarrassing as it is to admit, I’m part of the latter category.  3.  Which is your favourite bookstore?  I absolutely love Daunt books in London because not only is it pretty, it also offers a very wide selection of books.  4. Do you keep all the books you read? Do you keep none? I keep all of them. One day I want to have one of those homes that are just full of books and plants!  4.  What is the rarest color on your bookshelf?  Difficult to say, but maybe gray?  5.  Is there a book that permanently changed you (opinions, style, fandom) when you read it? Lots of nonfiction does that! One example is Caitlin Doughty’s Smoke gets in your eyes but also psychology-related books like Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow.  6.  How do you unwind after a stressful day at work/school? Step one is my commute home, during which I read. And then it’s usually tumblr and youtube (or catching up with series).  7.  Which fictional friendship/relationship is your goal? I haven’t figured that out yet but anything that’s supportive is always lovely to see.  8.  What is the one skill you wish you could master? Better social skills, for sure!  9.  You’re famous somehow and a University awards you one of those giveaway PhDs as a publicity stunt. What would you be a Doctor of?  no idea, but I’d love the chance to get an actual PhD in linguistics or philosophy!  10.  If nobody else is around and it’s cranked up loud, which song will you always dance to? What book would you have liked better had you read it when you were younger? A wrinkle in time, probably.

Favourite edition of your favourite book? ‘favourite’ is a big word and I don’t think I can answer to that but I do love my signed special edition of The Name of the Wind that has a goat scribble in it 

Favourite book (fiction or non-fiction) you had to read during your studies (uni or otherwise)?  That’s so difficult to choose! Let me give you a top 3: Hamlet, Code Name Verity and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (oh but I do have so many more favorites! what a tough question!) 

What movie would make a great book? cool question! Frankly, I’d probably read most of the Marvel movies as books. The comic world is too intimidating for me but if the movies were books I think I’d really enjoy all the banter and stuff...

Tea or coffee? Coffee - I like the idea of tea but I can’t get into it. 

A random fact you’re proud to know?  I’m hardly ever proud of anything so that’s a tough question.... I can’t really think of anything, so I’ll pass

Favourite tree? Weeping willows! 

Dream house/flat?  I’d love to actually own a small house. Ideally with lots of light, plants, and bookshelves. + a garden!

Least favourite comic (series)? Why?  I’m not invested enough to have one. 

You have an unlimited budget to buy one (1) book. What book would you buy?  I’d probably have something bound gorgeously just for me - maybe a collection of my favorite books or fanfics or something. There’d be gorgeous lettering, a leather cover and lots of lovely hand-crafted details.

Blank gap -tell me anything you want: books you love, how do you feel about my blog, anything at all!  So this is gonna be a question for the audience (I need advice). I have this book stamp (”from the library of....”) that I stamp all my books with after I read them and before I put them on their new spot on my shelves. Now I’ve just finished reading The Hunchback of Notre Dame and it’s an old book that I got secondhand (it even has an inscription!). I feel sort of strange about stamping it, I’m not sure if I should do it (Almost all of my other books are new books so I had no trouble stamping them). Thoughts?

The Voice - ZP edition ep. 1

Before we begin, this is a post where I discuss voices done for a specific zp character and order them from my least favorite to my favorite. This is meant for entertainment, and not to start a lynch mob. If I find out that these posts cause someone to get hurt, Imma Chase some bitches with a pool noodle. I have no ill will to anyone mentioned here. Please feel free to disagree with my opinion and tell me your own. And request who to do next. Thank you.

So.....let's talk about this fucker again.

Unsurprisingly, I've come across quite a few Damian voices. Up for judging today are the James Dijit dub, Dame's first and second Broadway zoophobia voice, Damianaid, and the Voice of Vesper. I'm ordering these from the ones I liked least to my favorite, and I'll give an explanation as to why I feel the way I do about them. Got it? Let's go.

MY LEAST FAVORITE

Damian's second Broadway zoophobia voice.

You may recognize this one as the voice who did the Addi and Dame "If you were gay" song. I'll start with the positive. This voice CAN sound ok. In the If You Were Gay cover, it sounded fine. Every other song though. ....woof. I linked Smells like Teen Breakup since it shows most of the problems I have, but another great example would be the Demons cover. So what are my problems? This voice is annoying and, at times, grating. The actor is clearly going for nasally, but holy shit the singing. I'm a musician, so don't think I don't notice when your singing is off key. It sounds flat in several parts, especially in Demons. Either that, or it sounds pitchy. I'll be fair, a decade and a half of doing music has made me notice off key stuff easily. To add on another positive, I like the "demonic " evil voice the actor does, which can be found at the end of the linked song. It sounds like a cartoon villain, and I mean that in the best way possible. It's certainly less disappointing than the one in the Dijit dub *cough*

SECOND LEAST FAVORITE

Voice of Vesper

I normally like Vesper's work, and yeah, I can see what he's going for with the raspy voice, but I can't get over how this does not sound like a teenage boy. He low key sounds like he has asthma and is 90 years old. I'm fine with the voice, but ultimately, it feels unfitting.

The James Dijit dub

Well this'll cause some surprise. Yeah, I think the Damian voice in this is fine. That's it. It's fine. If this was the voice we were stuck with, I'd be cool with it. What bogs this voice down for me is mostly the editing that accompanies it. Remember Dame's ch. 3 meltdown? Excited to see it dubbed? Prepare for disappointment. This might seem minor as it's just one part of the story, but the meltdown is something of a big character moment for Dame. So why did this production get lazy with it? First, let's discuss the demon voice. They reuse a voice effect they used with Vegenza. Why? I dunno. Was that the only effect they had on board? Also, the echo-y voice seems like a weird choice. It just sounds like Dame teleported into a cave and started yattering. Why does being a demon make your voice echo? Heck if I know. We don't even see this with other demons. While we're speaking about laziness, why reuse the same scream twice? I mean, the scream wasn't even that great. Damian sounds more like he's doing the ice bucket challenge that being electrocuted. Laziness like this bugs me and really detracts from the experience.

SECOND FAVORITE

Damian's first Broadway zoophobia voice

Why this one? I hate to use the argument "I just like it more ", but.... yeah. I definitely prefer this to what came after. I will admit, there is a part near the end where it gets a little pitchy, but I'd still take this over Demons. Apparently this voice was also used in the 1000k special this group did that you can find on YouTube. I'm not entirely sure, since the voice when used for just speaking and not singing sounds closer to the second one. If this is the first one, would it make this voice the second one except it can actually sing? Huh.

This one I like the best for a couple reasons. It fits the character pretty well. It actually sounds a bit like what the second Broadway zoophobia voice was going for, but somebody blended it with the Dijit dub because it also sounds a bit like that. It's the best of both worlds! Damian sounds like a teenager, and the acting is alright. If I had to pick someone to voice act Dame, I'd choose this guy. Also, scary thing is, if you look through Damianaid's account on Tumblr, he's high key a real life Damian. He even makes banjo covers. I don't know weather to be scared or amazed.

House of Baga Represent! An interview with Rita Baga

You’ve been doing Rita Baga since 2007?

Yes. 11 years of fabulousness.

And where did that start?

Here at Mado. I was hired first as a club kid with Marla (Deer) and Celinda and we were called the Three Stooges. And we were just paid to drink and party.

And how has that changed? You don’t get paid to drink and party anymore?

Yeah, a bit. But I have to perform now.  Hard times.

How did you move from being a club kid to a drag queen?

I took time. First, well, I’ve been a club kid for like two years without really performing, it was really just doing maybe one show every three months on average. And for a birthday party I was performing and Mado saw me and said, oh you’re good on stage,’ and gave me bookings. It started that way.

Who did you look up to as a club kid?

Leigh Bowery. Even though I didn’t know his name when I was doing it.  But I know it now. It’s really the inspiration. And Boy George a bit too. All the classics. But at that time there was no internet, really. It was 2007 and taking like three hours to have only access to a page like Google. So basically pictures from the magazines and I’ve been travelling a lot since I was a kid, so I’ve seen things around the world. And I was impressed by several things in New York City art museums. My father is a big pop art fan and at his house he has several pieces of Andy Warhol, real and fake, so that kind of image has always been an inspiration to me because it has always been a part of my life. Flashy colours and stuff like this. Marilyn.

When you were looking up things like Leigh Bowery before the internet, what other sources did you find?

I was reading a lot of magazines because my first job was at the Couche-Tard, and I was working the night shift so the only thing I had to do was press the gas button when there was customers and half of the time I was reading all the magazines. All the fashion magazines. I had three art courses, so I had to read a lot of books to find inspirations and I did that between 15 and 18 years old and that’s how I found my art identity.

What is it like for you when you meet young queens and they have such easy access to everything and they didn’t have to crawl through all of the dirt to find the diamonds?

I have mixed feelings because first, it’s so easy for them to have access to this kind of information now – and even to have access to everything. Because even when I started to wear fake lashes there was only like two stores in Montréal that had big lashes.  And now if you want any kind of lashes you can order it from the internet.  And same thing for wigs. If you wanted to have a green wig, there was one place and they had two wigs in stock so you had to fight with your colleagues to make sure you were the first one to have it. But now I’m also living with that reality, so at first I was like, not offended, but kind of jealous that I had to start at that time. But they don’t know what it was like 10 years ago when it was like the golden age. And there was no Grindr, everyone was going out just to meet and to have sex with different partners. So it’s a different time, but I’m glad that I’ve lived in this time too.

How does this easy access to things affect the transfer of information between generations?  Are you a mother to a lot of queens?

I only have two drag daughters but I have plenty of children. With the dancers here at club Mado, I call them all my kids. House of Baga represent! But now I feel like there’s a gap between the generation before me and the generation right after me, because I’m kind of in the middle. There’s six or seven queens still doing it from my time. And now since five or six years there’s like 40 queens. There was an explosion. Everybody wants to do drag now.

How does a scene like the Montréal scene – it’s a very active scene, it’s a big family and it’s crossing over a lot because you in particular are hosting these big drag superstar shows with big famous queens from TV – co-exist with the other drag scene from RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Every time I’ve worked with the queens from Drag Race they were all really kind with us because I think they know what’s drag before being famous. They just know that we’re doing the same job that they’re doing. There’s always a clash in the audience when we mix local queens with queens from Drag Race because just, for example, last summer I hosted the Drag Superstars show (at Parc LaFontaine) with a fellow Montréal queen and she was doing a big number with eight dancers and the choreo was so tight and she had her moment. It was fabulous, everybody was screaming, but then right after there was a queen – I can’t remember who it was – but she did a regular number, she was all by herself, and the people were screaming so loud and I was like, ‘oh my god, she didn’t do a thing.’ So I’m just wondering if for them it changes stuff. Are they becoming lazy because they don’t have to do much now? I’ll ask that question next show.  But I’m glad that we have this chance to perform with them because it’s bringing a lot of people.

The reaction you had last summer on that stage was amazing.

Yes. And I’m grateful.

You’re also the events coordinator with Pride …

The Queen Supreme.

So, because you’re also an artist, how do you think having an artist coordinate those events has made Pride Montréal something special?

I know that there are a bunch of Pride organizers who are also doing art stuff in different ways. And I think that has it comes to coordinate artists and just having access to stuff in the backstage, it’s easier because we understand what we need backstage. Or just to set a proper time to rehearse and stuff like that, it’s easier. But I think I’m bringing my artistic point of view to the table and I’ve been there for five years now. Already! And I think it’s a growing organization, we’re all growing together and it’s always growing like this from the beginning. So it’s challenging – we don’t want to do the same thing every year, every edition. So we’re trying to listen a lot to what the communities have to say. For now it seems to work.

Can you describe for me your experience just how Montréal has changed in the last 11 years you’ve been doing drag?

The gay village has changed so much in the past 10 years. 12 years ago it was my first experience in a gay village and I was shocked. There was people kissing everywhere and they were partying, and I was under the impression that people were partying all of the time. But now I’ve found that it’s more of a touristic place. The function seems to have changed now. It was a resistant place from the start, but now it’s still a place to mingle and to find friends but it’s mostly different venues to go if you want to have fun. It doesn’t matter your sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s just a place to have fun now. Just here at Mado, on the weekend, we have so many straight people in the audience. It’s like more than half of the audience is straight, so it’s changed a lot. When I first started to work here there were only LGBTQ friends in the place and two or three lost straight boys. Times have changed. It’s more the opposite now.

Do you think that the Village serves less of a political purpose now?

Yeah but if ever something happens in the world, it’s still a place where people want to come. It’s still a safe place for most of the LGBTQ community.

I remember after Orlando coming to the streets here.

It’s weird because if nothing’s happened, it’s like, ‘I’m not sure that I need to go out in the Village now to meet people, but I’ll go if there’s a show that I want to see.’ But if something happens, it’s like, ‘We need to be together in the Village.’

How does the world of the Village interact and work with the more underground scenes in Montréal like at venues like Never Apart or Notre-Dame des Quilles? Do those worlds interact?

More now than when I first started for sure. Now we have since 3 years, we have a Gala de Drag, an annual drag gala. And for the first time it was a mixed event with Cabaret Mado and Cocktail Bar, but I spoke with Uma (Gahd) and she wanted us to try to integrate the other venues outside the Village for next year. Not only the Café Cleopatra, but plenty of other venues showcasing drag queens and LGBTQ talent. So it’s a discussion that we never had before, so I’m guessing there’s some changes. Also the voguing community of Montréal, and just the competition last week for Mx. Fierté Montréal, we had Johnny Deville and Coco who is part of the voguing community. But I don’t know if you have noticed that there was a merge in the audience, and it was rare. I was thinking, ‘I’m seeing people here that I’ve seen at the vogue balls. I’ve never seen them here before.’ So that was cool.

The history of the two scenes goes together, so it makes sense.

You know, I used to feel like it was two separate worlds, but now it’s merging again.

Can you tell us about Mx. Fierté?

We have 53 drag queens from Montréal and Québec. We have 75 in total in the drag community so it’s more than three out of four, and each week we have between four and six cunt-estants. That’s my favourite word. Cunt-estant. And the jobs choose one at the end and the audience as well. This runs 11 weeks and we have two semi-finals.

And what happens to Mx. Fierté?

She, he, they win $2,000.00 and that person will have their own special float in the parade and will lead the T-Dance final closing number with another $2,000.00 budget. There’s also extra prizes – clothing, wigs, and a huge gift basket. There’s about $5,000.00 of prizes.

Can you go back and tell me a little bit about the club kid scene in Montréal? And do you have pictures of you from this period that we can publish on the internet?

I was so ugly. You’ll laugh. I’ll show you one and you’ll laugh.

What was that world like?

It was fearless, I think. Because now I feel like people are really aware of what a drag queen should look like. They’re watching Drag Race, they know all about drag queens. But 12 years ago it was like they just wanted to see a boy wearing a wig. That was all. We were so ugly. We were wearing stuff that we made completely drunk the day before. But it was fun. We were doing everything – it was horrible but it was fun. People were just wanting to have fun and now it seems harder to have fun, but people are so obsessed with their telephone. When I host, I’m like, ‘Can you just put your telephone in your pocket? Please?’

Unless. But it was not like this 12 years ago. People were more free. Even more sexual. Because now it’s so different. People are so secretive. They have their own secret lives. But it’s still a good time to live. 50 years ago it was another time. But I’m glad that I had the chance to start as a drag 12 years ago. Because I’m just 30 years old, but when I’m talking to my friends who are the same age who started drag at the same time, we’re like, ‘oh, do you remember when it was full of people drunk and smoking cigarettes in the bar?’ And it’s like, ‘fuck yeah! That was so good!’ And now people are so prudish and like, ‘You’re so polished! I know drag! I watch Drag Race!’

Can you tell me some of the people in Montréal that you’re excited about? Young queens or other performers?

I think Uma Gahd is one queen that we have to watch in the years to come. I love Tranna Wintour too, and every time I meet her I’m like, ‘I love you.’ Every time she performs I’m performing here. Every single time. The only time that we were performing at the same time at the same place was a Never Apart party, but I was only there for 30 minutes. I love an emerging artist called Jade Above. I love his music.

Tell us about the Drag Superstars show at the Casino Montréal on March 2.

I’m very excited because two years ago I set a goal of wanting to do a show at the Casino Montréal and it’s really a dream coming true. I’m excited. It’s a drag show and I’ll try my best to meet the girls because at the other show I was so stressed trying to change outfits between every song and I just missed the entire crew. I saw them only at the end to say, ‘you were amazing!’ But I had a talk with Sasha (Velour) because she needed a ride back and she’s really nice.

How did you pick the queens for this event?

I wanted to have a different lineup than what people are used to. I know that a lot of people love Ongina, but I don’t know why here in Canada she’s never booked. She has plenty of gigs in the US but here it’s more rare.

Is it her first time here?

It’s her first time in Montréal. She has performed in Vancouver, I think. And every time they’re touring they’re bringing half of the latest season and fan favourites. But I mean Ongina is a fan favourite. And I wanted to bring Pearl because we have tried to book Pearl two years ago and she cancelled the day before the performance. Same thing for Shea Coulée, so people were angry. ‘I want to see my queen!’ We’re listening. I’m excited and it’s going to be a fun night and we have a whole program for the night. There’s a show but after that there’s an after party and there’s six additional queens from Montréal joining the lineup and performing as surprise guests. It’s going to be very fun. Time to let loose! And now I’m kicking you out to tuck my junk.

What is your favorite non-Victuuri character from YoI? Why?

Phichit! He’s adorable. His eyeliner is the best. He is the kind of friend that you should want to have. His overwhelming positivity is something I need in my life. Good selfies. And he’s just a good person.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, without worrying about money, where would you go?

Japan. I really want to visit Japan.

Favorite video game/board game?

This is difficult. It’s either Batman: Arkham City or Portal Runner. I love both equally but for different reasons.

Do you have a talent that is very unlike/unique from your other talents/skills, unique or unknown?

Not really. I’m pretty steeped in the arts.

What superhero would you most like to be and why?

None of them. Superheroes are boring as hell. Clean and cut goody two shoes who can’t possibly kill the bad guys because they’re ‘role models for children’. Thereby making it so the bad guy can continue to hurt people and therefore being responsible for the lives lost because of the bad guy’s actions.

Anti-heores are not superheroes btw. Deadpool does not count.

[EDIT] Though if we’re being honest, I suppose Wonder Woman will kill. Though honestly I still wouldn’t put my life on the line for others, just because I have a super ability of some sort. I’m in the business of self-preservation. And if I do something, I expect payment. Heroes are all about doing good and not expecting gratitude. That’s not me.

How did you come up with your username?

This story has been told many a time. My name is Helen. I like watermelon. I was a messy eater as a kid and was always soaking my shirt in watermelon juice. I was nicknamed Watermelon-Smellin-Helen. I wanted a unique penname for fanfiction, that no one else could possibly confuse something with, and honored my old nickname, but changed the last word to felon, and added an extra L to make it even more unique.

When making a Tumblr account, I decided to add Helly. That’s from my nickname, Helly Belly. Both granted by my mom.

Waffles or pancakes?

Waffles most of the time, unless we’re talking Mickey D’s hot cakes.

What is your favorite Disney movie? Character?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The music of that movie is the most beautiful in my opinion. And I firmly believe it was a movie ahead of its time. It had some serious lessons in it that went right over people’s heads. 

And honestly, my love for the music is contributed to my mom. Mom played everything from Beethoven, to Aerosmith, to Eminem, to Dean Martin. Even if she didn’t like the genre, she would let me listen to determine if I liked it or not(Funk being the one she hates most and I love). I was exposed to different music all the time which is why I took to the Hunchback so well.

Kidagakash is my fav character. I was very young when Atlantis came out, but Kida reminded me of Storm from X-Men. Dark skin and white hair is such an awesome combination. And then she spoke a bunch of languages. And then she punched Mole out! And then became a queen. What’s not to love?

Give me a 3 sentence description of a D&D character you would create.

Is that supposed to be Dungeons & Dragons? I don’t know shit about the game. My great uncle does but I never cared to ask.

How many languages do you know? Are there any you want to learn?

English fluently. 

American Sign Language conversationally. 

French, Italian, Spanish I can get by pretty easily with reading them. And listening. Speaking is a bit difficult because I pause so much when trying to remember words. My pronunciation is fine, it’s the remembering during a conversation that trips me up every time. And my Grammar is not the best. My English Grammar is shit so this isn’t a surprise. XD

I am slowly working my way through familiarizing myself with Japanese Katakana. See, the above languages all have a similar alphabet because they are romanized. Japanese is different. Meaning I have to start from the beginning and practice writing the characters every day. Every. Single. Day.

Romaji(romanized Japanese) is much easier to read of course, but that won’t help me much irl. And by writing them over and over it helps me memorize them as well. It’s elementary school all over again. And once I finish this, I have to move on to Hiragana. That will take a while.

I would like to fully learn Japanese one day.

Do you have a favorite name? What is it?

Not really.
