Something about how physically small Ellie looks in this episode just makes it all so much more intense. How little she is curled next to Joel, how big the rifle looks when she holds it, the way David is able to pick her up so easily. The contrast in the size of their hands when he's telling her that she, a 14-year-old, is his only equal, and how tiny hers look when she wraps her arms around Joel; the way his coat reaches her knees when he drapes it over her. Every second the camera spends on her is forcing you to look at how young she is and it just makes it all so much more awful.
I’m just going to leave this right here because this is a masterpiece. This is acting in its rawest fucking form and I swear to god if Bella doesn’t win an Emmy for this performance, I will riot.
Her screams of terror turning to screams of blackout rage?
I think it's really important that they didn't parallel Joel and Ellie's violent scenes in episode 8. Joel is still shown as a protector, he killed and tortured (morally ambiguous) men for Ellie, to find out where she was and he didn't care how he had to get that information, he was willing to do what needed to be done without remorse.
Ellie on the other hand, killed David (and that other guy) to protect herself. She killed him after he kidnapped her, kept her in a cage, tried to kill her, and worst of all he tried to do the one thing that all girls are taught to fear about men from a far too young age. He tried to dehumanise and violate her in the most horrific way, so when she killed him it was more than to just protect herself and get away, if that were the case she would have stopped far sooner. All the extra stabs show the anger and fear she felt being let out, it symbolises her forcibly taking back the control and power he took from her.
Joel killed for Ellie but she didn't parallel it by killing to get to him, she killed for herself. Joel's kills were kind of unnecessary, where as Ellie's were the only way to win, Joel already had the upper hand on those men but Ellie had to kick, scream, claw, and fight however she could to take it from David.
The fact that David went from calling Joel her dad to her “friend” and his intentions for her.
This fucking guy really went. Oh. This child is already used to being manipulated and taken advantage of by an adult in her life. And she’s super loyal to him? Perfect.
The you’re my equal 14 year old. And the falling for Ellie’s bit and immediately snapping into “you bitch how dare you not let me take advantage of you” mode when she breaks his finger.
The fact that he for sure would have risked the whole community’s safety gambling with him possibly being infected.
Feeding a teenager her own father and then slapping her when she expresses that she wants revenge on the people that killed him.
The fact that he became an abusive leader in the apocalypse by stationing himself as someone people could trust and then abusing that trust.
The fact that he implies that he used to be worse before he “found god.”
Like u know the scene when a guy is going upstairs in the basement and sees an empty bed with splotches of blood on it? Yeah, i literally SQUEALED at that scene coz i really wanted to see Joel . Also the scene with Ellie in the cage/prison thingy, when David (or whatever his name is) caresses her hand and she says "Oh!". It was the moment I knew some shit was gonna happen.
When he comes out of the fever dream he's been in for days cause she could be in danger. When he stands up for the first time in days for her, When he kills a man for her. When he tortures and kills two more men to find her. When he walks for miles in the cold to get to her. When he has to steel himself before following a trail of blood in case it's hers. When he finds her bag and takes it with him cause he knows they mean a lot to her. When he sees dead bodies strung up by their feet and has to make sure none of them are her. When he finds her bloody and terrified. When he sees that someone has clearly hurt her and briefly shows his anger before hiding it to comfort her. When he says it's ok baby girl, I got you. When he wraps his coat around her. When they put their arms around each other. When they steady each other so they can walk without falling.
