Many are the kids wandering through the Maw, unaware of the trapped beast slumbering between those walls of steel.

To explain this whole thing a bit more, here comes a THEORY (yay) : I was reading The Seven Year's Nightmares fanfic (wich is very cool and worth a shot), and the idea that the Maw might be some kind of living being intrigued me. I replayed LN I thinking about it, and it felt... right, like the Maw being alive truly makes sense. So I start thinking about this whole thing, and today I give you this theory (and this fanart). My focus was about the Lady's relationship to the Maw. In TSYN, the Maw is some kind of higher being that chose a champion to rule over the many monsters and kids within. I have a different though about it : On the official Lady's description, there's a line that has always seemed important to me :

"She cast the hypnotic spell that keeps the engine running." I always though that this "hypnotic spell" was some kind of thing that dragged the guests on the Maw for the annual feast. But reading it with the idea of the Maw being alive made me reconsider this. What if the hypnotic spell, and by extension the whole point of the Lady's existence, was to keep the Maw asleep ? Look at the Maw. It spends most of the time underwater, and rise only once a year, lure people, eat people, then go back. If the Maw is alive, then it's not very... active.

But the Maw is often described as some kind of beast that would never stop eating if giving the time. It means that the Maw is acutally keep in some kind of dormant state : a state induced by the hypnotic spell of the Lady.

In my theory, the Lady's goal is not only to coordinate the monsters and prepare the annual feast : she has to continually cast the hypnotic spell to make sure the Maw stays asleep, and does not go rampant on the main lands. However, the Maw still need to eat, and so the Lady lossens her grip once a year, during the annual feast. It's some kind of ritual that keeps the Maw fed, and easier to control. It may even allow the Lady to strenghen her powers.

In keeping the Maw like that, the Lady inherit of a secure place that fullfills her desires : a luxury in the world of Little Nightmares. Maybe she has found the Maw on her own, maybe someone ask her to take this role, I don't know, what do you think ? So that's my theory. The Maw is some kind of monstrous entity made of steel and coal of unknown origin wich, would it be left free, would ravage the mainland and consume everything faster than an Eldrazi on Zendikar (Magic the Gathering reference : check). The Lady cast a hypnotic spell that keeps the Maw asleep, preventing a total rampage and granting her a safe spot to live. Once a year, she must fed the Maw by organizing a great feast, some kind of ritual allowing the Maw to eat. As long as the Maw sleeps, the engine run, the kids are kidnapped and the guests are lure. The Lady litteraly lives in a giant monster she must fed so che can continue to live her "peacefull" life. I'm gonna leave the theory, the following is more of a headcanon : I see the Maw as a immaterial being that was bound to a vessel of steel and iron (the actual ship) by something (I am soooo mysterious /j). The Lady (or Ladies, there might have been more before) were offered the role to cast the spell in echange of a safe spot within.

The Maw has little to no intelligence, it's psyche is purely made of desire for food.

And the Maw is not like the Tower, the walls do not hide the flesh of the Maw, the walls are the flesh of the Maw, the engine it's heart and the entrance it's mouth. Anyway, that's all for today. I'm a bit stressed because this is litteraly the second time ever I post one of my drawings online...And the first time on Tumblr... Or outside the safety of a private Discord server... And sorry for the broken english, it's not my first language...
