Note
about The Invisible Enemy and I'm sure this is well known, but it's the first time I've noticed that Adidas will still be catering for our leisure-footwear needs in the 51st century.
Indeed... good catch! XD

Doctor Who: The Invisible Enemy
I rewatched this serial on 17 March 2023. In this sci-fi tale we meet K9 for the first time.
We start in a space ship with three astronauts. It all looks rather swish and as though we’ve entered the digital age and left the analogue behind. The model shots look a little like a cross between Blake’s 7 and Space: 1999, and I do advise viewers to think of it as an expressionist stage play rather than anything pretending to be realistic.
In the TARDIS, the Doctor and Leela return to the newer looking old console room. There are some sweet moments between them; I am struck by how the humour of producer Graham Williams has asserted itself. No bad thing in and of itself but the tonal shift is quite something as we jump from gothic horror on Fang Rock to outer and inner space like this. There are a few dark moments in the story, which are probably from Robert Holmes. Like the possessed Doctor hunting Leela… and I have dim memories of being a tad scared of some of the stuff inside the Doctor’s brain.
The story is about a space virus that transmits through the eyes and infects minds. The solution is quite fun and a first for Doctor Who. Thankfully real viruses are unlikely to be able to get ideas from this story…
Disappointingly, this future is dominated by white men, with a few white women in nursing roles. Oh, and a giant space prawn. And K9. Yay for K9!

The Invisible Enemy
K9 LETS GOOOOOO
I had no idea when to expect K9 other than "soon" so I literally screamed with joy when he showed up on screen. It's weird to say that the robot dog prop with a silly voice is instantly one of the most charismatic portrayals the show's ever had but it's absolutely true. He steals every scene he's in and is the absolute highlight of the serial
Aside from introducing the most iconic piece of the Whoniverse since the Master, the serial itself was just really good on its own merits. This isn't the first time "evil germ" has been the monster of the week, but the silliness of the Doctor and Leela traveling into a body and then the germ being turned human size worked really well.
I wouldn't say this was a comedy episode, but there were definitely some really strong comedic moments throughout. My personal favorite was at the end when we were waiting for the base to blow up and the camera holds for just a beat too long for us to wonder "well, we're waiting!"
This was also Leela's strongest serial since her introduction imo. They put her back into the pulp cover outfit, which is frustrating but also it makes sense in that it's sort of her iconic look now. But aside from that, she really got to show off her action hero chops. Having her be immune to the germ made sense in a Watsonian way, she's from the future it's possible she developed it because of these events, but was also an excellent tool in a Doylist way because it gave the character free roam to shoot laser blasts at people
That it was her initial suggestion that the Doctor initially ignored that eventually saved the day was just icing on the cake tbh
All in all, I really really enjoyed this one and had a lot of fun. I'd heard bad things about this season but so far I'm enjoying it!
