In a letter to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., the State Department confirmed that Hamas is a designated foreign terrorist organization and that the State Dept. has the power to revoke visas.
"The Department of State also has broad authority under the [Immigration and Nationality Act] to revoke visas," the agency said. "We exercise the authority when there is information or evidence indicating a visa holder may be ineligible for a U.S. visa."
Additionally, it said that when it receives "derogatory information" indicating ineligibility, it takes "immediate action" which can include revocation of visas.
"Even after issuance of a visa, the Department of State works closely with the Department of Homeland Security and other partner agencies to ensure every visa applicant is continuously screened to ensure they remain eligible for travel to the United States," it told Rubio.
The department also said it "shares your outrage regarding Hamas’ brutal attack against the State of Israel and its citizens."

Do white Americans owe reperations to blacks? NO!
In America, Reparations have already been paid. To the point that it’s beyond ridiculous. Whites have gone out of their way to artificially boost Nonwhites at every turn. Trillions of tax dollars and donations have been spent over decades trying to boost non-white achievements and social status. Also dept relief, Crt, affirmative action, first step act, donations for past wrong doings, school degrees, food stamps, welfare programs, etc.
Alot of whites and some jews through out American history tried to help blacks become a separate & self-reliant people (the pursuit of Booker T. Washington) through education.
The Freedman's Bureau (1865 to 1872) :
The Freedman’s Bureau (officially known as ‘The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands’) was created by Americans to feed and provide other life necessities to the Negro population of the South after the Civil War ended in 1865. However, well before the end of the Civil War, Americans organized all over the North various organizations to feed, clothe, educate and provide other needed necessities for the newly freed Negro people Note: according to W.E.B Du Bios, more than 50 organizations were active in relief capacity for the southern Negro by 1866.
"The First white people in America, certainly the first in the South to exhibit their interest in the reaching of the Negro and saving his soul through the medium of the Sunday-school were Robert E. Lee and 'Stonewall Jackson'. ...Where Robert E. Lee and 'Stonewall' Jackson have led in the redemption of the Negro through the Sunday-school, the rest of us can afford to follow. " - Booker T. Washington 1910
The Tuskegee Institute:
This icon of Black education was founded by the great Booker T Washington and was also the brainchild of an Alabama prominent banker by the name of George W. Campbell (White man). Another White man, an Alabama state senator named W.F. Foster, spearheaded the necessary funding for the Institute through the state legislature. The result was a yearly appropriation of $2000.
The following white Americans, all self-made millionaires, gave small fortunes - their own hard earned money - to this Negro self-sufficiency school over their lifetime:
--Andrew Carnegie
--John D. Rockefeller
--Henry Rodgers
--Collis Huntington
And,
--Julius Rosenwald*
--Anna T. Jeanes*
* Julius Rosenwald was an immigrant Jew and self-made millionaire.
* Anna T. Jeanes, a white woman, was not a self-made millionaire, but inherited her money from her husband.
Howard University
Howard University was chartered in 1867. It was championed by an American Civil War General, Oliver Otis Howard (November 8, 1830 – October 26, 1909), and the school hence bears his name. Howard University is also the ONLY higher education school ever to be directly funded by the US taxpayers (it still is).
Lincoln University
Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) was an exclusive college for Negroes and was created in 1854 by a white man named John Miller Dickey, who also became its first president. Lincoln University was originally named Ashmun Institute. The first Black president of the university was not elected until 1945.
Fisk University
Fisk University was an all-Negro college that was established by three whites, Erastus Milo Cravath, John Ogden and Edward Parmelee Smith in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1866.
Wilberforce University
Wilberforce University, located near Xenia, in Ohio, was an all-Negro college created by whites from the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856. It was named after a white man, William Wilberforce, who was an 18th century abolitionist.
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was an all-Negro school established in 1837. A white man named Richard Humphreys had bequeathed $10,000 in his will (10% of his estate) in 1832 for the sole purpose of creating a place of education for the Negro race.
Atlanta University
Atlanta University was founded by whites associated with the American Missionary Association, in 1865. Around 1866, its survival then shifted to, and depended upon, the Americans associated with the Freedman’s Bureau.
In 1922, the Carnegie Corporation and the Rockefeller Memorial gave $25,000 each to create the Journal Of Negro History.
In 1924, George Eastman (Kodack Co.) gave Tuskegee Institute $1 million dollars.
John D. Rockefeller
Mr. Rockefeller donated almost $180 million dollars to the General Education Board, which was chartered by Act of Congress in 1903. Much of this money was spent supplying educational aid to the Negro people, specifically in the southern states (Mr. Rockefeller‘s $180 million translates to almost 2 billion dollars in today's dollars!)
George Peabody Education Fund for poor Southerners
George Peabody Education Fund was established by a white man named George Peabody, and was designed to help Negro colleges in the South at the turn of the century.
The Slater Fund
The Slater Fund was established by white, James Fox Slater, in 1882. Its primary purpose was to support southern Negro schools. Around 1915, this fund was worth about $1.75 million.
The Jeanes Fund (Jeanes Foundation)
A white woman named Miss Anna T. Jeanes, a Quaker, created 'The Fund for Rudimentary Schools for Southern Negroes’ in 1907 from the monies left to her by her late husband. The purpose of the fund was to help Negroes create teachers for their people. It was endowed at one million dollars (a staggering sum at the time).
The Southern Education Board: In or around 1900, whites created the The Southern Education Board. It's funding was initially provided by the Slater Fund and the Jeans Funds. Americans, trained in the area of farming, would go to rural farms (Negro and American) and educate them on better farming techniques. The Southern Education Board was also very concerned with the high southern Negro illiteracy, which was, in 1900, almost 50% (for southern Americans, around 11%).
Phelps-Stokes Fund
Established in 1911, a white philanthropist and self-made millionaire Anson Phelps Stokes created this fund for the purpose of improving Negro life through education. Its endowment was approximately $900,000.
Minor Fund
This fund was established by a white female, Miss Myrtilla Minor, in 1851. Its purpose was to provide aid to schools who would teach Negro girls to be teachers for their people.
In 1910, according to the US census, 50% of Negroes (about 4.8 million) lived in urban centers (all created by white males). That means there would be approximately 2.4 million Negro males living in the urban centers of America. About 1/3rd would be too young to work, so that means there were about 1.6 million Negro males of working age living in American-built cities in 1910. Of those 1.8 million Negro males, 350,000 (almost 20%!) worked in a factory job (all factory jobs for the Negro were supplied by White men i.e. not ONE factory job in America was created by a Negro male --so, concomitantly, no white man was employed by a Negro male in a factory job. Note: At this time in American history, you worked or you starved. (source: Chronological History of The Negro pg. 358)
Naturally, with whites, being so generous supplying jobs to black men, naturally, more black men were encouraged to come to the American-built urban areas.
Julius Rosenwald
Without question one of the most generous of the Euro race toward the black people was Julius Rosenwald (Jewish). Most of his charity was gifted through the Rosenwald Fund (depleted in 1948)
Cushing Fund
A white woman, Miss Emeline Cushing, established this fund in 1895 for the purpose of financially assisting colored schools.
Whites Create Special School - In Mississippi. - For Negro Boys To Own Land
Daniel Hand Fund
A white self-made millionaire, Daniel Hand, established the Daniel Hand Fund in 1888. It was endowed at $1 million dollars (two-thirds of Mr. Hand’s entire personal wealth!). Mr. Hand stipulated that all of the Fund would be directed toward Negro education in the former slave states. When Mr. Hand died in 1893, he bequeathed the rest of his remaining wealth to this fund.
Andrew Carnegie
Mr. Carnegie, when he retired, was considered the richest man in the world. He also became the biggest philanthropist in America and gave generously to Negro educational causes, which included giving $600,000 to the Tuskegee Institute in 1903.
Harmon Foundation
The New York City Harmon Foundation was established in 1922 by an white man named William Harmon (1862-1928). Its purpose was to aid and assist Negro art, artists, businesses, education for Negroes, farming needs, music, and other causes for the Negro.
Garland Fund
This White-male-established fund was used to help the NAACP through the Great Depression.
John D. Rockefeller Jr.
Mr. Rockefeller, Jr. built the Dunbar Apartments in New York City, a mammoth complex consisting of six buildings - 511 apartments - specifically to house low-income Negroes in Harlem. He also built and funded a bank in NYC solely for Negroes.
Katharine Drexel
Katherine Drexel was born November 26, 1858 and died March 3, 1955. She was an American female, a nun, philanthropist, educator and later canonized as a Roman Catholic saint.
"She became a nun, and took the name Sister Katharine, dedicating herself and her inheritance to the needs of [non-occupational ranking] Native Americans and African-Americans in the western and southwestern United States, and was a vocal advocate of racial tolerance. She established a religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People. She also financed more than 60 missions and schools around the United States, and founded Xavier University of Louisiana[1] - the only historically Black, Roman Catholic university in the United States to date."
The United Negro College Fund
In 1944 the United Negro College Fund was created. Almost all of the funding for its initial operation was provided by the General Education Fund and the Rosenwald Fund.
Mr. William Trent, a black man, in the course of his 20-year tenure as its first executive director, raised over $78 million for this fund, almost all of it coming from generous white liberal Americans (Senator John F. Kennedy gave all of the profits from his book ‘Profiles in Courage' to this fund).
Also American Jews also gave money to black people. Before 1950, it was mostly coming from the Rosenwald fund.

Serial killer cops are extremely common. Cops typically kill [queer people], BIPOC, and sex workers so they can get away with it.
The Golden State Killer was a cop-serial killer who committed 13 murders and 51 rapes and got away with it for 44 years.
Many others haven’t been caught.
Other famous examples include David Middleton of Miami PD, Gerard Shaefer of Martin Co Sheriffs Dept, Drew Peterson of Chicago PD, Joseph Mensah of Wauwatosa PD, Austin Edwards of Virginia State Police, Derek Chauvin of Minneapolis PD
Many serial-killer cops are still cops
Tips to protect yourself from cop-serial killers:
Stay aware of your surroundings and make note of any approaching cops
Let someone know where you are going and when to expect you back
Travel with other people
Do not talk to cops ever
Do not go w/cops anywhere
Rec[ord]/Stream
Really important 🧵 of examples: killer cops get rehired or promoted. Your serial killer may be the face of your city’s copaganda posters.
Tumblr media
20 years ago this cop was a central player in the biggest dirty cop scandal in Dallas history. The Narcotics Squad was found to have targeted, brutally beaten, and robbed ($10,000s) from immigrant workers and business owners.
Now after killing multiple, he’s the hero cop poster
Tumblr media
Chicago PD in particular has an extremely dark pattern of running torture black sites. Jon Graham Burge, detective and police commander was found guilty of torturing 118 people between 1972 and 1991 as part of a department wide torture program… in 2018.

dia dhuit! i was wondering why you dont like leo varadkar? this is completely genuine, im a young irish person who knows very little about irish politics and would love to learn more, ive seen a lot of leo hate but im not sure where it comes from, and i respect your opinions on other things so i was hoping you would be willing to explain a little?? no worries if not, go raibh maith agat!! <333
dia dhuit! thanks for this ask, getting really annoying about politics is unfortunately one of my favourite hobbies 🙏
i’d like to start by saying that i am biased against varadkar since i lean left politically, and therefore have never voted fine gael and will never vote fine gael, because i don’t believe that their policies/promises/ideas are what’s best for ireland in the short or long term, and are often actively damaging.
leo varadkar has been the leader of fine gael since 2017, and his party has been in government since then. in that time:
• child homelessness in ireland has reached its highest ever recorded level
• he and his government ended the no-fault eviction ban during the worst housing crisis this country has ever seen
• our hospital systems reach breaking point every winter, and in 2022, 60% of newly trained doctors emigrated to Australia
• the mother and baby home records have been sealed for 30 years, against heavy protests from the victims and their families
and in terms of varadkar more personally, i just think he’s a very unpleasant politician:
• his ‘welfare cheats cheat us all’ campaign was hateful to its core, and incredibly ironic considering the dodgy accountancy going on in gov depts
• leaked confidential information of GP pay deals to a friend
• just google “tiny tim should get a job”
• is a landlord. enough said
i do want to stress that i vehemently disagree with some criticisms of varadkar, namely those coming from ireland’s far right wing. accusations against him include: that he has let immigration spiral out of control and ireland is full (this is fascist rhetoric used to justify the arson attacks against various asylum seeker accommodations), that he has let ‘trans ideology’ (whatever that is) dominate our schools (blatantly untrue. if anything, varadkar still has a long way to go before he is anywhere near as progressive as he should be regarding trans rights). lots of these far right wing criticisms are heightened against varadkar since he is of indian descent and openly gay.
in fact, i will give one (1) small bit of praise to varadkar: i thought he handled brexit okay. but apart from that? i can’t say much
fine gael have been in government for over a decade, and our most successful feats (gay marriage referendum, abortion referendum) have come as a result of grassroots campaigners. i do not think that fine gael, especially under varadkar’s leadership, has helped ireland. as a young adult trying to live in dublin, i feel the effects of the housing crisis every day. i feel the effects of our government’s apathy towards young people every day. this is leo varadkar’s government, and so yes i do blame him

Thinking about how sorcerers work in the west, specifically the USA, and I think I'd probably use Hellboy, the BPRD and the Bureau of Control from the Remedy Studios games as a rough template. For one thing they're probably not called sorcerers but instead exorcists and vessels like Yuji would be called "sin eaters" going off an old tradition from the British Isles, mainly Wales, where a cake/biscuit would be made and placed upon the dead to soak up their sins and then a poor person was paid to eat the soul cake and absorb the dead person's sins so they can go to heaven. So the consumption of cursed objects is seen as an extension of that old tradition and vessels are treated both kinda like pariahs and also like they're doing a very selfless service to society.
The sorcerer community in America is probably one of the most diverse and disjointed since the country is so heavily populated by immigrants with no real incentive to seek each other out or tbh knowledge the others are even there half the time. But the two most organized factions would be the government's Department of Paranormal Investigation (name likely to change) and ofc, the Catholic Fucking Church. overall the Catholic Church has likely been the largest and most well organized group that employs sorcerers outside of Japan for like, centuries given their real world historical reach and power.
The set up in the USA doesn't really have anything like Jujutsu High and instead exorcists are usually just brought right under the wing of the government and removed from society to live at HQ/branch facilities or are being trained, managed and monitored by handlers as they live semi-normal lives. Generally whether they live on base or out in the world is decided by how inhuman they look (ex. panda or abe sapien ass lookin' guys) and how difficult they are to control (read: they were too strong to muscle into compliance so we had to let them stay in their own home). The Dept and Church have a fairly strained alliance since they have common goals but also a lot of differences and conflicting ones as well. This can get Very Interesting.
Financial compensation of exorcists is also very uh, iffy lol. The gov has very little interest in compensating exorcists, preferring to give them a small stipend and then cover their basic needs like room and board which makes the exorcists very dependent on them and unlikely to quit/defect. The dept is also very interested in experimentation. While the USA is pulling from many millennia old sorcerer traditions the Dept itself is actually very new and is thus very interested expanding their knowledge base and trying to increase the weaponization of cursed energy and curses. They've 100% tried to make like, cursed spirit super soldiers or whatever or like, cursed energy guns lol. These experiments have mixed success and have at times made things that will make life objectively worse for like, the whole world in the long run lol.
I'm still deciding on like, who are the "names to run away from" like Sukuna in the western sorcerer canon but I know one of them is definitely Faust who, while he was never known to be as powerful a fighter as Sukuna, was is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable jujutsu scholars to have ever lived, having made a deal with a cursed spirit and via this learned all kinds of mystical secrets. People will go to war to get their hands on the cursed artifacts he made but are even more covetous of his various tomes of arcane knowledge.
The Dept was only formally founded during WW2, mainly to combat Nazi use of the occult and curses but was a very scrappy and disorganized thing until they came into contact with the jujutsu sorcerers of Japan during the US occupation of the country after the war. A very tentative alliance was made between the two, mainly because Tengen was like "these guys are batshit and not in a good way" and wanted to keep an eye on them (this turned out to be a Very Wise Move later on).
In the same generation as Gojo and Co. the US gets their own special grade exorcist either like Ever or in Ages and are keen to try and make them stronger than Gojo because like... ofc that's how the US would handle this shit. Ofc they make it into an arms race lol. I'll get more into this when I write about that OC but this goes about as well as you'd think and hilariously eventually ends with that exorcist defecting to live in Japan.
RE: This shit and the whole thing to kidnap sorcerers in the manga — the reality is that even in real life the president is not 100% aware of all covert ops and what they do. The Dept is highly secretive and runs on a skeleton budget so they tend not to raise any alarms. They also likely gave up a few presidents ago about trying to get them to believe the whole "demons are real" thing and instead just pretend to be boring government agency #35348546583 to get all their shit thru. People like the president literally didn't know about curses until Kenjaku cropped up and the Dept didn't learn about Kenjaku's scheme until it was already getting underway. Bureaucracy at its finest.

(this is the about page for BROWN O.P.)
Tumblr media
Please understand, this ain't no slick corporate job... and it ain't no DTG pop-up nonsense either. We here at BROWN .O.P. might not see the world through the same lenses as our competitors, but our dedication to authenticity is second to none.  Our graphic shirts are exclusively conceived, designed, printed, tested and packaged in the famed Murdershed™ of southern Appalachia.
Tumblr media
   While many of our "peers" may employ scores of immigrant child laborers and use A.I. for many processes, Brown employs a single (1)  adult hillbilly of questionable coherence and mental health. THAT's the "Brown O.P. Difference"™ While others may digitally squirt runny inks directly onto slimy polyester with $5,000 plastic printers, We screenprint our shirts exclusively with high-solids water-based ink as well as equipment designed, built and sourced in house. (initially, mostly lumber piles **around** said house).
Tumblr media
Why have we done such a thing? High production numbers? No. Easier overnight meme-based production? LORD NO. Did we save money? Sadly, also no. THE TRUTH IS... we're not 100% sure why we have done things this way, it's simply how we have always done them.
Tumblr media
In summary,  that's why we have market distinction: Our products are incomparable. That's why our shirts have the perfect, barely detectable mild tang of musky long needle pine. How are we able to come up with so many creative unique designs? We're mentally ill.  That's why we have the style taste-makers savor. (in rare cases, there is also the occasional cat-hair, so look out for that)
We live in "interesting" times. Maybe it's time to do something "interesting" instead of what we've been expected to do.  Maybe it's time to fight crazy with more crazy. Maybe JUST MAYBE... It's time to buy some T-shirts.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the shirt show.

Okay, long form time!
This springs from this conversation with @bizarrelittlemew about the "Danish" village Solvang in California and them serving æbleskiver and medisterpølse for breakfast, and the question of "how did they even come up with that?" tickles my historian brain.
Places like Solvang and Elk Horn (see also the Spise Med Price episodes from Elk Horn) give me such an uncanny valley vibe and I think it's worth examining why and how stuff like this happens.
For some light context, both Solvang and Elk Horn are examples of places in the United States that were founded by danish immigrants in the beginning of the 1900-hundreds (we'll go with "roughly 100 years ago"). While Solvang is a tourist attraction now, Elk Horn is a pretty standard small town and home to the Museum of Danish America.
I think the reason why these places seem kinda off to Danes is due to the fact that these places "split off" from Danish culture more than a century ago, and has since slowly evolved in one direction while Denmark (and thus Danish culture) has evolved in a different direction. Sort of two finches getting separated on different islands.
To me, a Dane living in Denmark, places like these are WEIRD! It feels like those paintings and drawings of lions from the middle ages made by people who had never actually seen a lion. Sure, æbleskiver and medisterpølse are still culturally significant in Denmark today, but they're not breakfast foods (æbleskiver are a christmas thing, and medisterpølse is for dinner or the occasional christmas-/easter lunch). But do you know what IS breakfast foods in the US? Sausages and doughnuts. And medisterpølse is indeed a sausage while an æbleskive does sort of fit in the category of "fried dough".
What has happened is this: the culture in Solvang and Elk Horn has picked up pieced of US culture while keeping parts of the Danish culture from around 1900. Some of the original context has been lost, and this results in the US cultural context filling in some of the gaps, since the places are located in and surrounded by that culture.
It feels sort of like the Whalers On The Moon episode of Futurama.
In the end I think the people of Solvang and Elk Horn adore Danmark and Danish culture. They seem proud of their cultural heritage and I can't imagine that they mean harm in any way, even if looking at pictures from Solvang reminds me more of the city of Duloc from Shrek, than anything you'd encounter in Denmark.
This is a very surface level take, and someone with a degree in social sciences or something similar might be able to write something a lot more cohesive and in dept.
But my point is: this happens, it feels weird, but it's how culture (and language and people) evolve and develope. Does it feel weird when something so far removed from Danish culture purportes to be Danish? Absolutely. But as a former (some would argue still...) colonizing country I don't think it would be appropriate to call it cultural appropriation. The founders of these places were Danes, and besides that Denmark has been forcing it's culture on other countries for way too long for us to complain about cultural appropriation. That ship sailed in 994.
@bizarrelittlemew, I'm so sorry I wrote this wall of text at you. My ADHD-meds kicked in and it just sort of fell out of my brain. I've made you this as compensation:

What's Goin' On (2 of 2)
A post about US civics matters heavy on my mind these days.
(Part 1)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Top Historian...
Tumblr media
What exactly does that mean?
For the president, it means the Dept of Justice removes the IRS team which has been investigating Hunter Biden and the Biden family**
Tumblr media
**In contrast, the previous US president was investigated by DOJ prior to and during his term, with no credible cause per recently released Durham report.
For the rest of the country, among other things at the moment it means many states should prepare for more illegal immigration
Couple of Megyn Kelly show clips that tell some of the real world story of illegal immigration along the USA southern open border.
youtube
youtube
(via):
The US government will pay for illegal immigrants' hospital care, food and shelter, children's education, etc. A legal immigrant has to learn English; illegal immigrants do not and most will not.
Tumblr media
American skilled worker looking for work. His hospitalization was not paid for by someone else.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Besides the safety and security issues, there are 31 trillion and counting every second reasons. Not too many days/weeks ago, the debt was just over $30 trillion. In the one day since this post was drafted then posted, the national debt increased nearly $2 billion. Biden's answer: raise debt ceiling, increase taxes on Americans.
THE US CANNOT AFFORD BIDEN.

hi! i hope this is okay to ask, but i was just wondering if you could tell me/us a bit more about how you landed your job (which seems SO cool)? like, is this something you were always interested in? did you have to go to school for it? i'd love to work on the comm/marketing team for a university in my country--because i really miss the feeling of being on a busy, bustling campus--but idk if there's a better way of going about it than just cold-calling or emailing the hr dept about vacancies...
(2/2 uni job anon) comm/marketing and recruitment (which is what you do, i think?) are quite different ofc--i just think that these particular universities could really use a hand with their various english-language dispatches and know i could really help them out if i found a way onto their staff roster...
hey anon! i'm definitely happy to answer any questions. i can't comment on how your countries university's handle hiring. in the states, universities tend to list all of their open administrator/staff positions online. you can literally google a university name + jobs and you'll find a link. once on it, you can usually narrow you're search—so in your case, you could potentially narrow it down to positions with the words 'marketing' 'communications' 'social media' etc etc. then find the position that fits your interest and fill out the application and submit it. then you just have to...wait. which for universities (at least in the states) can take some time.
i put my personal journey in my work below the cut if anyone's interested:
i didn't originally go to school with the intention of working in higher ed. i got my bachelors in english lit with a minor in history. i thought i might become a writer or go into publishing or something. i v much did not know what i wanted to do by the time i finished undergrad. i traveled some the summer after college and didn't really seriously thinking about my post-school plans until late july. i didn't have a drivers license (let alone a car or easy access to public transportation) and i was living in suburbia with my parents so my options were really limited—but i lucked out in that we lived about a 15 minute walk from a large public university so i just kind of...applied to everything? i didn't have much by the way of experience—at this point my resume amounted to 3 summers working as a clerk in a doctor's office, a summer as a day camp counselor, a summer working as a sales associate at homegoods, and an internship at a british private publishing company. basically i had customer service skills and i knew how to function in an office and i could string coherent sentences together. the one guiding point i had when applying to jobs was that...i'd grown up traveling around the world and so i was intrigued by the jobs i saw that had to do with international admissions/students/etc. i prioritized those applications, but honestly i would have taken anything.
i luckily got an interview and an eventual offer for a part-time assistant job in the office of international admissions. and my career kind of just...evolved from there? about 6 months later my supervisor moved into a new position and i was asked to apply for his job so i did. it wasn't exactly what i wanted to be doing—i spent my days sitting in an office reviewing international transcripts to determine a) if the school was recognized/accredited; b) the US degree equivalency; and c) the student's equivalent US gpa AND i was given the task of processing and issuing immigration documents for incoming int'l students. these are two incredibly niche, vital processes for international admissions and having that baseline expertise was good for me. i stayed at that university for a total of 4 years before accepting a position at a smaller private university in DC—by this point i had a license and a car and could afford to move closer to public transportation. career-wise it was lateral move—i didn't get a title bump, but i did get a decent salary increase AND the job was more generalized. which was good for me! all of my work up until that point had been SO specialized and isolated that i spent a lot of time on my own cooped up in an office doing work alone—and bc my job was so isolated and no one could cover for me, and it was so reliant on being in the office, i was never given the opportunity to travel. which sucked. my new job let me experience different facets of admissions with a team of people and also allowed me the chance to get some experience recruiting domestically.
after i'd been there for a while i took advantage of one of the common benefits of working in higher ed in the US—tuition benefits. i applied for and was admitted into a master's program int'l education and my job covered 90% of the tuition. whenever i had a performance review or check in with my supervisor i let her know i was interested in recruiting internationally for the office. halfway through the program my boss offered me the chance to apply for a new position in my office with the understanding that it would come with a pay increase, a title bump, and FINALLY: int'l recruiting. i applied, got the job, renewed my passport so i could be ready to travel...and then COVID hit.
that derailed plans a little but i stayed in my job and kept working. i finally got to start recruiting internationally for my job last fall and around november i had another conversation with my boss about a new position—this one would be focused on recruiting internationally and on developing partnerships with other universities and designing joint programs. so that's what i'm doing now! and that's how i got here.
not sure if anyone is actually here still reading this! but if you are, i am happy to answer any questions you might have about preparing for interviews, what to expect, other nitty-gritty details, etc.

The East Sun Building – Karen Taylor

▲ Sun Myung Moon and Kamiyama with a fishing boat in production
_________________________________
March 19, 2001
The East Sun Building was my prison for nearly two years. Not only did I work there in building the Good Go sports fishing boats, but I also lived there, as did all the Master Marine members. I believe that it was considered cheap and convenient to keep us in that huge, cold and dark hulk of a place. Eventually we were moved to the New Yorker Hotel due to Fire Department inspections. Of course, it was completely illegal and hazardous for us to live in the building, but like the Blues Brothers, we were on a mission for God!
The East Sun Building was located directly across from a large housing project. It was a very dangerous area with the predominant occupants being black and Hispanic Americans. To venture out at night was to tempt fate, but I have walked to the East Sun Building from the Long Island City subway station quite often during daylight hours without incident.
I felt like a prisoner in the place and I refer to my time there as “repaying my debt to society or “my Danbury sentence”. We were never taken anywhere for Sunday outings while living in the place and the brothers had awful living conditions. Their living quarters were an enormous windowless dark room on the 2nd floor with a bed platform built of plywood that ran the entire length of the room. It had been promised by Mr. Kamiyama that the platform would be carpeted, but that never occurred.
The handful of sisters that were sent to work in the place had much better living conditions, but we all felt trapped and there was a heavy atmosphere of unhappiness in the building. Many members who were considered problematic were sent there from different church departments, particularly CARP. The East Sun Building effectively became a dumping ground.
One CARP member was sent to work in Master Marine who had been discovered during an aggressive witnessing campaign. Bobby was a 16 year old runaway. This boy eventually broke into the Master Marine office one night, stole about $12,000, and vanished into New York City. He knew that he would not be pursued since he left a note clearly indicating that he would contact the Dept. of Immigration and reveal how many illegal immigrants were working for Master Marine if we pressed charges. Smart kid.
I loved Mr. Kamiyama’s (TK) explanation to Master Marine members that this was indemnity to prevent a serious injury to one of the boat builders. The truth is, TK had already been instructed by Rev. Moon that the boy should go home, but nobody took action, even after I spoke to the production supervisor about Bobby’s bad behavior. This theft was preventable. I would call this “indumbnity”!
We were visited by Rev. Moon fairly regularly and I have had a unique experience or two with him while working there.
