It’s so cute seeing other fandoms complain about their really good anime adaptations meanwhile s1 and 2 of Kuro are just… bad. Just an absolute dumpster fire. Like I’m seeing people complaining because some of the Hellsing characters were drawn slightly differently in Ultimate, I’m seeing BSD fans talk about how they ever so slightly tweaked this one panel from the manga.

Babygirl, they added a whole two and a half seasons of non-canon wacko nonsense. They added a naked dog-man. They spoiled a major plot twist of the manga. They took a hacksaw to like three whole characters personalities. They added the Alice in Wonderland OVA.

Just finished watching the OVA for the first time and by god was it good. Angsty as hell at times, but honestly pretty good ngl. My main complaint is the CGI usage which usually ends up looking incredibly weird ngl. Pretty sure that's just because of the time period, but I gotta love janky CGI that so clearly doesn't fit. But still the OVA made love Penwood and actually be upset over his death, he's now one of my fav characters alongside Pip.

Gotta say, was not expecting that one scene with Seras' mother's corpse, and very happy it doesn't out right show what happened to Alucard as a child as the manga did. The manga is very uncomfy. The OVA is very mildly less uncomfy when it comes to such things. Weirdly young vlad kinda looks like a young Walter for whatever reason??? Dunno, it's weird a thing I noticed.

Also holy shit was Alucard a zealot, and he really did just take all that hate he had and just put it inwards against himself, huh?

Another thing- lots of wing motifs with Alucard. Like I know he has the thing of 'eating his wings to make him tame' but like, it's really interesting how there's just so much wing imagery, especially in that scene where he jumps off the boat. Dude looks like an angel of death. This will probably get it's own more indepth thing, just like how I am still kinda working on dhampirs and how they might work in this universe.

I don't care if Hellsing Vampires are utter abominations, I want to know how that DNA would combine with human and see just how fucked up a result I can get. And a not so fucked up result which would be the not so realistic, my mind wants to know how that would work out.

Hello, this is a rant post because I need to evacuate some thoughts, I know this blog isn’t for it, but don’t hesitate to respond in anyway, if you agree or not. I would seriously really appreciate, this blog is the only place where I can really discuss about stuff with people outside of my work environement (because my work is my life, and funnily enough I hate my work.)

Upon rewatching Hellsing (the 2001 show) and now ultimate (the ovas) I’ve come to realize something.

See I’m not usually one for the edgy, I tend to find it more funny and litteraly cringe than cool, it’s not that I don’t like a bit of edge, A dark character can be very cool when done with an appropriate tone or contrast, or just being an evil fucking bastard, for example ruin from UU is very very edge and cringe, but I don’t consider it bad writting at all, he’s litteraly an overzealous fanatic who think he’s god favorite very probably because he got 2 UMA in him who groomed him into thinking he was gonna survive ragnarok, ill never say that the edge in berserk is bad for example, (well I do for some of the stuff that comes before golden age. Before GA guts is a dark sasuke on steroid and outside from the halucinations, I can’t take him seriously)

But anyway, even without my not trully appreciation for the edge, nowadays when someone tells me "oh that show is so cool it’s dark and mature" I’m SUPER OFTEN disappointed. I mean come on guys, really, solo leveling is "the peak of maturity and badass?" "Omg sun said arise, and summon tons of ex bosses he fought that constantly praise him like fangirls" (And for those who haven’t read the manwha, I’ll add that those shadows are among the best characters in the series, and they aren’t great or profound.) or to change series "wow rimuru is so cool now that he transformed into a demon after eating one". "Annos is peak badass, he killed a guy then used magic to resurect him and killed him 100 times!" or even mentioning how there’s people out there who consider stuff like kingdom of ruin or redo no healer "deep and mature" because girls get r*ped in it. Rudeus being labeled as a good guy for doing absolutely no effort in helping a girl who is trap in this world with him because "ugh real world was bullying me" where we’ve seen him do litteraly no effort in real life at all.

It made me realize something, for a while I thought that "yeah it’s just not your age anymore" or "don’t be a boomer, you were cringe too back then" "you lack objectivity" but fuck it I’m gonna say it those series ARE trash, mid at best, but if you consider stuff like THAT peak, really ? You clearly haven’t watched good series, and it’s not an issue of "but it’s the genre / trope" you want good mature show ? They exist, you want a good isekai ? Same, log horizon’s worldbuilding and not have the entire world rely on the powerfull but not op protag is right there, you want a good power fantasy ? Ever heard of fucking dragon ball ? (I know it’s a shonen neketsu first, but really shonen neketsu is power fantasy except with a minimum of depth and characters with personality)

I won’t spoil in details Hellsing / Hellsing ultimate because I really think it’s a story that needs to be watch, but it’s not just good because "ahahah ultra badass psycho vampire, girl with huge boobs and even huger guns and English lady boss kill nazis" the whole story is a parallel about moving on from traumas of the past and the idiocy of following dogmas / the past without thinking, and that’s just scratching what’s good.

Meanwhile what does a show like solo leveling teach us ? "Be on the grind and a sigma male and be super handsome rich and strong because that’s the only way girls and people will care about you and respect you ?" "Be a piece of shit to people and you’ll be rewarded" "every Japanese is an asshole" (ok in all seriousness that last one is something in manwhas in general and it can easily be understand that Korea has a grudge against them because of history)

Anyway all that to say, I’m tired of pretending that mediocre, or even bad series are good just because duhu they’re popular and it’s the new style. There’s PLENTY of good new stuff. But people don’t focus on it and it’s fucking pissing me off.

Just in the shonen genre : dandadan, yozakura familly, undead unluck (duh), jjk ( i mean it’s not very "new Gen" and tbf the last arc crumbles because of gege’s writing and him being stuck with underdeveloped characters that no one care about because he put all his eggs on just a few chars. Basically it was very good for a while, like mha really (even though for mha it’s because the author takes 0 risk and just wants to please the fans) didn’t paid off, but you can respect the work) sakomoto days or yes even kagurabachi (throw in the memes) and even BIG SHOCKER one piece.

And that’s JUST SOME of jump’s content (well dandadan isn’t in the main magazine but shut up) AND I just talked about the most apreciated genre of battle shonen, staying in jump you got very fucking cool stuff like blue box, akanebanashi, csm, witch watch, elusive samouraï.

And once again, that’s just from jump and currently running. If you want good writen stories of any genre theres TON, and I can assure you that you will find badass and cool characters you can self insert into, difference is that they have actual care put into them, and say stuff, and have more than 1 character.

To chill me out I’ll remember than frieren and apothecary diaries got freakishly good results and that’s very fucking cool. I’ll also remember that we have very good non shonen targeted stuff like some high quality rom coms (dress up darling (in its first parts, gojo’s continuous depression and self doubt is getting on my nerves personally, they made him regress and it sucks) komi can’t comunicate, bochi the rock or dangers in my heart come to mind) Go watch them (the diaries have like, no action at all, but at the minimum go watch frieren, there’s a reason why people are saying it’s a new goat on the level of a fmab, as long as you have two neurons and now how to focus on a story, you’ll have a wonderfull time, it’s also plenty epic)

Anyway all that rant to say : it’s ok to like trash, I do to for other stuff, everyone does, it can even be your favorite thing. But please for the love of god and anything sacred, do yourself a favor and actually watch / read good stuff, varied at least, try to analyze what makes a good story and don’t be a slave to market that copy paste formula harder than an ai fucking could. It’s so fucking tiring to see authors and passionate project crash when next to them a copy pasta formula who does no effort and just rubs the viewer in the good way to have them brain disconnect on it. I know that anime and manga is a distraction, it’s for fun, but respect work and creativity for f sake (Queue the joke about the fact that a person who does ai art says all that)

Will we ever get to see girlycard?

I see Girlycard as a form Alucard took on purley to fuck with teenage Walter and the Nazi's during WW2. It was a spiteful and entertaining way to trample his enemies and tease his microfilament-wire wielding partner, being an all-powerful being in the shape of a cutesy little loli. Beyond Hellsing the Dawn, there were never any scenes of Girlycard in the manga or OVA besides the final battle in London. So, if there is any point in the fic where Alucard could benefit from mocking his enemies kawaii-style, I may make use of it.

Integra rolling up to Cheddar like “vampires are real, anyway I’m in charge now. fuck off :) ”

Does Alucard get any enrichment beyond walking around on his way to kill vampires? Integra needs to put his blood bags in a little puzzle box or something. Maybe give him a few chew toys. Gotta take care of your Dracula!

Forever salty that the OVA doesn’t bother to include the brief time passing in universe where Seras gets acclimated to being in Hellsing and trained for a short while. In this they just drag her out of bed.

Consider this happening in the Hellsing OVA after episode 3.

I reviewed Hellsing and remembered this episode, which once touched my soul. I thought to write about Integra's feelings, because it was not so easy for her to give such an order.

Integra has always been famous for its almost angelic patience and restraint. Her sober and cold mind, which she cultivated in herself since childhood, has borne fruit. Her subordinates respected her and many of them considered her truly worthy of the Hellsing heritage. Integra is like an iceberg in the ocean. Many saw only a small and distant child, who is all alone. But looking at this woman from the right angle, each viewer is expected to have a whole block of ice that stretches hundreds of kilometers further, which seems to have no end and one never ceases to be surprised by such a person. But the only problem was... she was not devoid of feelings. Even the most restrained and cold-blooded people sometimes lose their nerves.

Since when did she start smoking those thin, smelly cigarettes? She automatically made a note in her mind to mention this to Walter. And the cool wind caresses her hair and touches her face, and she tries to breathe it all into her lungs, as if it could fit there.

But she can't smell anything but the smell of cheap cigarettes...damn it!

Thoughts return to the mission again. Integra is forced to constantly maintain control over her thoughts, but this momentary state of haziness in her brain was almost pleasant. She mentally scolds herself for not letting this go on any longer.

She remembered the words, which had sounded so confident at first. She remembered her commanding tone, which didn't tolerate objections, when she gave orders to complete the mission. So why then does it feels so empty... feels wrong and... dirty. Long-spoken, and therefore dead, words resurface in head. She's never had to regret her decisions before. What changed?

Integra's lungs fill with cigarette smoke. She holds him there for a few seconds, then exhales slowly. A gust of wind splashed in her face, causing to reflexively squint her eyes. Maybe she feels so bad because of what Alucard said. She still remembers what he said. The tone of his voice, in which there was not a drop of regret, not a drop of remorse...not a drop of pity.

She would be lying if she said she wasn't scared.

Alucard told the truth and she knows it! Hell she knows. He said she kills people with his hands and he's fucking right! Integra fought so fiercely against the ghouls and protected the people, and now she destroyed these soldiers in cold blood. Walter didn't say directly, but hinted that there could be no other way out. These people are there to kill or be killed. That's all. And no one can change that.*

The wind has become cooler, because it is getting closer to night. The last smoldering piece of cigarette reached the filter and went into the ashtray.

Her thoughts returned to Alucard again and again. She doesn't remember exactly when she stopped being afraid of him, but it was a long time ago. She always knew he was a monster. He said so, people said so, Walter said so. It is true. Why was she so surprised when he called...

"The temperature is colder today, isn't it, Integra-sama."

"As always like at times like this. You need to be outdoors more often, Walter."

"I made tea for you, Integra-sama. I tried something new, I think you'll like it."

Walter put his hand on his chest and made a slight bow, as he always did. At his feet was a table on wheels with a tray on which stood two cups of tea. At Integra's questioning look, he clarified:

"Thought you'd need company," he picked up a cup, "with your permission."

Integra looked into the dark expanse of the night, not knowing exactly what she was trying to see there. From the side where the edge of her balcony separates her from pitch darkness, he watched her.

His eyes narrowed and his mouth twisted into a predatory grin. The noise of his long coat, which is picked up by the wind, dilutes the noise of the trees around.

"It's beautiful night, isn't it, Master?"

The wind carried the sound of a low voice far beyond the invisible horizon, leaving behind the emptiness and cold of an endless night.

I was wondering if there are any eng vas or dubs you do like, personally I like the haikyuu dub cause a. you can understand everything said in the background b. it sounds natural to me like people would actually talk like that and c. I think the voices all sound different and fit the characters cause in other animes it's hard to watch the dub cause the voice doesnt fit how I imagined it

I grew up with the Bleach English dub and I think it's alright (tho I prefer Aizen and Kenpachi's original VAs, iirc they changed them for some reason), and the same goes for Durarara and Death Note for the same nostalgic reason.

Baccano also has a very nice dub that I would actually listen to again and think it's one of the few times a dub is just as good if not better than the Japanese version.

Cowboy Bebop's original dub is regarded as the gold standard of English dub voice work, and while I prefer the original Japanese I definitely agree. It's the best and most consistent quality English dub I've ever seen.

Hellsing (the anime and the OVAs especially) is also regarded as good, esp Crispin Freeman's performance as Alucard! And a side note, the parody version of Hellsing also has surprisingly great voice acting as well.

I don't care for the English dub of Free! but the other parody series 50% Off! is top tier.

As far as consistent quality goes, Persona 3 4 and 5 have good casts in English. 3 is weaker than the rest; Fuuka and Aigis have the same VA (she also voices Fuuka's friend for some reason?) but her role as Fuuka is easily the worst performance in the game...except for maybe Ken. Aside from that there are a lot of great English performances: Mitsuru, Igor, Elizabeth, J Michael Tatum as Theodore, Laura Bailey as FeMC, Liam O'Brien as Akihiko, Vic Mignogna as Junpei, the main dude from Strega that looks like methed-out Jesus.

Kingdom Hearts also has good English voice acting, but your mileage might vary. It's a little unfair though considering they've got Disney voice actors with literal decades of experience and talent for a lot of the cast, but still. The cast list is also so funny to me: You got Hayley Joel Osmond, Jessie McCartney, James Woods, David Boreanaz, Christopher FUCKING Lee, one of the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC as Demyx iirc...Kingdom Hearts is such weird bullshit, I love it.

Persona 4 has a lot of English VA veterans that do a nice job. As annoying/grating as Teddie can be, his English voice is way better than his Japanese voice. Like I cannot play P4 in Japanese because I hate it so much lol. And despite hating Amanda Winn Lee as a person, this is one of her best and most well-remembered roles for a reason. I prefer Naoto's original VA over Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, but McGlynn does a fine job. Chie's original VA gives the lowest quality performance, whereas her Golden VA has more personality and is less flat/more accurate to the character imo.

Persona 5 had a large cast of people who I'd never heard before, but I enjoyed all of them! Makoto's VA also voiced Trish in the dub of Golden Wind and despite not liking dubbed!Jojo for the most part, she does pretty dang well there too.

Panty and Stocking is one of the other rare examples of an English dub being better than the original imo, and that's largely due to Panty & Stocking's art style and vibe that was intentionally styled after American cartoons. It's the only time I've really been able to stand Monica Rial's voice, and is probably her last role where you can tell ahe's giving a shit.

While we're talking about English VAs though, for the love of fucking GOD if you like Silent Hill do NOT play the HD collection! Not only is it a disaster and insult on every other level, but the new voice actors are fucking awful. It's odd because almost all of them are industry vets but their worst performances are all in the HD Collection. The original Silent Hill 2 and 3 VAs are miles better even with less experience, and I have a lot to say about why the HD Collection is fucking atrocious.

Hellsing Commentary 2 Notes

This commentary is done by Taliesin Jaffe, the voice director and script adapter of Hellsing, Patrick Seitz, the voice of Luke Valentine, and Josh Phillips, the voice of Jan Valentine. Direct quotes may vary in accuracy, as these are written down from audio without transcripts. I also didn't write down every joke or piece of trivia because I feel like people who watch the commentaries should get to have some nice surprises for stuff that isn't covered here.

-Taliesin says that they take their cues from Dracula.

-According to Taliesin, on the day they recorded Alucard's flashback the VA that played Helsing "shows up to the door in a trench coat, bringing storm weather with him, and says 'Hello.' (Thick Dutch accent) and I was like 'Ah, Von Helsing!'"

-Someone sent Taliesin a box of cigars from Integra's brand at one point and he "went through them very fast, they're very nice."

-Like Crispin, Patrick would also listen to Integra's VA read the telephone book.

-Taliesin had to pull Mike McFarland to help him write "some truly vile things" for the Valentine brothers (mostly Jan.)

-Josh and Taliesin were both "groggy" (tongue-in-cheek 'hungover') the first day they came in to do the series together.

-Hellsing was only the third or fourth thing Patrick had worked on, so while coming back for Ultimate he got nervous about matching his prior performance, during his first tenure he was inexperienced enough to be like "So I talk after the beeps? Is that what- huh?"

-Josh and Patrick were the first choices for their roles and there "wasn't even a question" to Taliesin as for who would play the Valentine brothers.

-Taliesin's favorite line of Jan's speech prior to entering the Hellsing estate was cut due to not having enough time. After stating "I mean, what the fuck?" he was supposed to add "What do you do for a living with that thing!?"

-When working with Luke Valentine/Patrick, Taliesin says that the main fight was "Making sure you sounded like a cheap imitation and knockoff of Crispin without actually sounding like a cheap imitation and knockoff of Crispin."

-Patrick says "When my friends find out I was in this, they're always like 'Oh, you're like, a Valentine brother? Are you the one that swears!?' No. 'Oh. Oh…well, that's still cool.' Without fail!"

-Taliesin jokes that "When you're in doubt and you need Englishmen, you go to the video game Medal of Honor and you start taking all of their actors, is the trick."

-There was a lot of talk about Jan's Konami joke, because according to Taliesin the Japanese thought it never quite came off for them. They had a long talk about "Are people gonna get this?" but eventually decided to leave it in.

-They rewrote Jan's loudspeaker speech the same day they recorded it.

-The one that took the most time for recording OVA 2 was Walter's VA.

-Josh plays guitar and sings in his own band. At least at the time of the commentary, he shows up in LA "every once in a while."

-In regards to how Luke massacred the Hellsing soldiers, Patrick was deeply excited about how in Ultimate "I'm not just showing up and talking the big talk and then getting my ass beat down, I get to have some coolness first." One of Luke's moves while killing the Hellsing soldiers is also a reference to Fist of the North Star.

-According to an offhand comment by Taliesin, Jan wears a Nike jumpsuit.

-Josh apparently has lip piercings and Taliesin disparagingly jokes about how "It's the thirty minutes we have to wait for you to take out your hardware." while doing voiceacting. Patrick gleefully adds "It’s like a damn windchime, Jesus!" Josh comments a few minutes later that "You could actually play Mary had a Little Lamb on these two."

-The going-around-the-table-with-exhale reactions are "one of the things that drive me a little crazy about this job" for Taliesin, "'cause it works in Japanese, but you look at it and go 'How on earth am I going to make this work in English?!'"

-Both Taliesin and Josh comment on how Seras does not match her VA at all, calling Katie Grey this "serene, quiet...sweetheart" and a "peaceful little flower girl." She also sings and records her own "folky, girl-with-a-guitar" music.

-Taliesin has gotten to play with a monocle before and "you don't have to squeeze your eyebrow down as hard as you think."

-Josh comments that Crispin "gets to be a lot more insane in this one. Like, when this fight really gets going he's like, freaky."

-Taliesin is an H.P. Lovecraft fan.

-They had a tough time casting Walter, but eventually settled on a "Roddy McDowall" voice, because Taliesin likes "the sound of an old person who never really got very good at it."

-According to Taliesin, there is a common misnomer in Japanese that English is a faster language, which has made him come to believe that the Japanese put extra lip flaps into the show to make it easier for the dubbers. He actually wrote to them at one point with "Please, stop! Less animation, for the love of god!"

-Taliesin is annoyed about Luke Valentine getting so many shots out of what seems to be a small flintlock gun, pointing out that there's nowhere to actually fit the bullets in the gun. Patrick jokingly replies "I've got mind bullets!" They continue ragging on this for several minutes.

Taliesin: "But seriously, I see a lock, I see a stock, I see a barrel, I don't know where the bullets go, because that's a musket."

Patrick: "They go into Alucard."

Taliesin: "So why don't you just come in there with a matchlock, why don't you, like a little piece of burnt rope in your hand going 'Wait wait wait, just have to light the match here, hold on.'"

-There were "like 19 different things" written for Jan's line after he busts into the Round Table Conference, including "Shit," and "Hi."

-Because Crispin/Alucard's starting point is "a lot more chilled-out now," Taliesin got to build his levels of crazy, "same as Anderson," who's no longer "just crazy." Patrick comments at this point that he enjoyed Anderson during the original TV series, but likes him even more in Ultimate.

-The sound(s) for Alucard's hellhounds are made with "a layer of Crispin going 'AGHBLAGRAHH,' Crispin doing Tasmanian Devil," and an underlying high-end of "crying awful babies" that were reversed, chopped up, etc.

-Taliesin jokingly likens the moment to where Alucard finds out Luke isn't on his level as "its like suddenly finding your date won't put out." Patrick adds "He seems so let down: 'I thought you were different, different than the others,'" and Taliesin agrees, saying that that was exactly what they were going for.

-Patrick comments that they got Luke's death scene "in less screams than I thought, I thought I was gonna be shrieking all the way."

-"AND THOSE LAST SEVEN BULLETS THAT YOU WERE KEEPING IN YOUR FLINTLOCK!"

-The snarling/berserk "batshit crazy" version of Seras is what got Katie Grey the part back when she was cast, before Taliesin got the scripts or had even seen the anime. OVA 2 also happens to be the "last place of safety, casting-wise" for Taliesin, since starting on OVA 3 he has to start casting again.

-According to Taliesin, the Darby Bible is the bible to use when quoting.

-At the time of recording the commentary on OVA 2, Taliesin was working on getting contacts in Germany to make sure the German/Austrian/Dutch accents are correct. When casting, he also runs his ideas by Japan and "-they'll either say 'That's- that's nice,' at which point I know I have to think more on that because they're not happy, or they go 'Ooh, that's really cool,' and then, you know, you've done it."

OK so when Alu returned @ the end of the manga/ova, Tegs is old. If she had no kids, then wouldn't that mean the contract between Vlad and Abraham rendered null and void? Sure, she has some people she picked to succeed her upon her death, but she kinda looks down on them. Even if it were in her will, he would probably find them about as worthy of ordering him around as her uncle. Not worthy at all. So with no biological heir and unworthy successors, he really doesn't have anymore reason to take orders from anyone. He'd just say 'fuck it, I got even more bs powers than before and I'm tired of waiting for the right human to come along and kill me, I'll just kill everyone everywhere until the world coughs up someone that fits my lofty standards of ending me permanently.'

The contract wouldn't be null until Integra is dead. Regardless of her age, he's still obligated to serve her until she dies, effectively ending the line of Helsing's (and his servitude.) Even if she was to have kids/chosen sucessors, I'm not so sure Alucard would serve them either, judging on the fact he was 100% ready to eat Integra when he first met her until she proved her worth. Clearly the seal doesn't prevent Alucard from killing Helsings.

I think Alucard would simply go back into hiding as he had been before his servitude or continue doing what he has been doing out of sport. I don't think he'd mindlessly kill humans either, because in Volume 1 of the Hellsing Manga, he's against killing humans if only for the reason of sustainability.

Would he continue to kill other vampires for fun? 100%.
