Either way, with blame apportioned (un)fairly between them, as Alexander stares up at the dark building, not a single light illuminating a single window, it’s a safe bet that John is fast asleep, right now. It would be an asshole move to wake him up just because he’s here.

Then again, the victorious high from hammering out an incisive and thought-provoking refutation in a little over a day is fast fading, and the lack of sleep and real food is catching up with him. The thought of having to trek all the way back to his own apartment is almost incomprehensibly unappealing.

He fumbles a key from his pocket, clumsy in his gloved fingers, and lets himself into the building, careful to catch the door behind him before it slams shut. He takes the stairs—an effort, and one which had better be appreciated by John’s nameless neighbours who don’t want to be woken by the ding! of the elevator in the middle of the night—and then eases his way into John’s place.

It’s dark, and warm, and smells familiar in such a comforting way that Alexander can feel himself relaxing as he crosses the threshold. Of course, the soothing embrace of the apartment becomes the distinctly less soothing embrace of utter darkness when the door swings shut behind him, blocking out the dim sodium-yellow light of the hallway bulb that had been spilling in behind him.

“Fuck,” he says, softly but with great feeling. He slides his phone from his pocket. The lock screen glows to faintly to do much except make the darkness seem even darker; he can’t unlock it to use the flashlight with his gloves on so he juggles it to one hand while the other rises to his mouth, teeth clamping onto a finger of the glove to tug it off. He feels the phone slipping from his grasp when it’s already too late.

A bunch of things happen at once. The phone tumbles towards the ground. The glove peels from his hand unexpectedly, sending his head jerking back and knocking him off balance. He lunges for the phone and punches the side-table where John keeps his keys and loose change, all of it clattering across the surface.

So that’s how John finds him when he flips on the lights.

John’s expression is confused and sleepy and already shifting towards amused. If his hair had been tied up before he went to bed, it’s not now, and the wild array of his hair around his head is mussed and adorable.

“What the fuck, Ham?” John asks, grin grasped loose and easy between drowsy teeth. 

“I didn’t want to wake you,” Alexander says, around the glove, as though that’s any sort of explanation. It’s easier than I was sneaking in to sleep on your couch because I lack all proper concepts of the passage of time and home is a relative concept, anyway. “I lost track of time. And if you didn’t want me turning up at unsociable hours, then you probably shouldn’t have given me a key.”

“I mean, you demanded a key.”

“And you gave me one. Don’t go shifting the blame to me, Laurens.”

“Of course not,” John says, mock-solemn. “Shifting the blame onto an innocent party would be wrong.”

“Now you’re getting it. Anyway, go back to bed. I’ll just—ow, fuck, why is your furniture so pointy? —raid your fridge and take the couch.” Finally, Alexander pries his fingers away from his throbbing funny bone and takes the glove from his mouth, tugging the other hand free too and ducking to retrieve his phone. It’s not damaged; it’s a second-hand brick of a thing that could probably survive nuclear warfare.

“There’s pizza,” John says, wandering towards the kitchen, which is in the opposite direction to his bedroom and therefore a flagrant disregarding of Alexander’s suggestion. Alexander doesn’t need to be looking at him to know that it’s a lie. Something warm ignites somewhere behind his ribs, a soft thing that turns up more often than not when John is involved and just sits there, gently expanding until it feels like something’s trying to break his ribs from the inside. Alexander elbows John in the stomach, because it feels like the safe route. John lets out an oof and obligingly moves aside so that Alexander can escape to the couch. He watches John swing the fridge door closed, one hand rubbing at his abdomen where Alexander’s elbow had connected. 

“Anyone ever tell you that you’re a terrible house guest?” John grumbles, and comes and sprawls himself down on the couch next to Alexander.

“I’m a fucking delight. I bless you with my presence.” Alexander says primly, around a mouthful of pizza.

Did you mean ‘wound’? It’s not that Alexander doesn’t have an appreciation for inter-lingual wordplay, quite the reverse; but his mouth is full of pizza and he can’t bite back a witty response. “Thought you couldn’t sleep?” Alexander asks, tone fondly mocking.

“Right,” John agrees, hurriedly. “Yeah. I guess I’ll just watch you sleep then, shall I? Like an absolute psychopath.”

Alexander snorts and wriggles himself further onto John, flopping an arm across him in a way that can’t possibly be comfortable. John grumbles, but only hooks an arm around Alexander’s waist to anchor him in place.

“Is it your life goal to just be as inconvenient as possible?” John mutters. Alexander closes his eyes, heaving out a heavy sigh as he feels sleep plucking at the edges of mind already, coaxed out by John’s warmth underneath him.

You’re easily forgiven if you don’t know how much RAM your smartphone has inside. No one will judge you if you’re not exactly sure which specific version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor lives inside your device. 

In short, diving into a phone’s spec sheet means different things to various segments of the smartphone-using public. For some, it’s something to pore over and argue about on the internet. For others, it’s an irrelevant math problem that you don’t have to solve in order to fire up the TikTok app. Samsung’s Galaxy Note series devices have always put up big numbers on the spec sheet while trying to make its juiced-up hardware accessible to people who couldn’t care less how much RAM sits under the screen. It’s a fine line and the Note20 Ultra 5G walks it better than any of its predecessors so far.

Evaluating a phone like this is tricky—it’s like a supercar. Some folks want to really dig into the technical guts of the thing, twiddle with the knobs (or, settings, I guess, in the case of a phone), and appreciate the feats of engineering required to wring small performance bumps out of every component. Others, however, are primarily concerned with the flash factor. That 6.9-inch AMOLED screen is every bit as impressive as a swoopy Italian sports car, but it employs some seriously impressive tech to make it shine.

The display

Short version: The Note20 Ultra’s screen is one of the nicest—if not the nicest—smartphone screen around. At 6.9-inches, it’s massive. It feels even slightly bigger than it is because—in typical Samsung fashion—the edges of the screen slope toward the back of the device to eradicate any semblance of a bezel. I’ve personally never been a fan of the curved edges because that screen real estate isn’t usable. The screen is also extremely bright. It promises 1,500 nits of brightness, which, in human terms, makes it easily visible in bright conditions and relatively eye-scorching if you try to use the max setting while doom scrolling before bed. 

The really impressive aspect of the screen, though, is its refresh rate. The Note20 Ultra has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. That means the image on screen can change up to 120 times every second. Scrolling at 120 Hz is like floating through a lake of pricy hand lotion (it’s very smooth). That kind of performance typically obliterates battery life, however, so the Note20 Ultra’s screen adapts its refresh rate depending on what you’re doing on-screen. If you’re looking at static images, it can drop all the way down to 10 Hz. Of course, it’s capable of rates between the two because not every app supports, or even needs, that kind of smoothness. When you’re playing a high-end smartphone game or just scrolling through apps, however, it will spoil you for other phones with a paltry 60 Hz spec. 

As for resolution, you can pump the Note20 Ultra’s display all the way up to 1440 x 3088, but you can’t run both max refresh rate and max resolution at the same time—even if the phone has enough firepower, you would churn through your battery in just a couple of Quibis.

There are three cameras on the back of the Note20 Ultra. The 12-megapixel wide camera is about what you’d expect from a smartphone super-wide at the moment. The 12-megapixel telephoto zoom lens, however, is more interesting. Like the zoom in the S20 Ultra, the lens sits down into the body of the phone and sees out into the world like a periscope. This gives it more room to move the elements around and enables true 5X optical zoom. Optical zoom is almost always better because it doesn’t crop into the image and magnify flaws like digital zoom will. 

The maximum zoom promises 50x total zoom through a mixture of optical and digital and the result is impressive as long as you go in expecting a realistic result. The final images are clear enough to make out, but they’re not going to win you any blue ribbons at the state fair photo contest. At 20x, the results are more acceptable, and you could probably even get a usable Instagram photo out of it if you shoot in a bright setting and hold the camera really still. 

The main camera has a 108-megapixel sensor, but you’ll probably never really want to use it to shoot 108-megapixel photos. Instead, it typically combines blocks of pixels together into what we’ll call “ultra pixels” in honor of the phone’s name. That results in images with more reasonable resolution, but lots of detail. Historically, Samsung has not been shy about pouring on saturation and sharpening when using the main camera. I found the Note20 Ultra follows that tradition. Most of the time, the photos are sharp and detailed with vibrant colors. The effect can come off as a bit much if you like more natural-looking images without super crispy sharpness. But, that’s mostly a taste thing. 

One considerable change: it now employs a laser for focusing. The Galaxy S20 had a somewhat skittish focusing system. And with all that resolution, a super-wide aperture, and a somewhat large sensor, focusing is actually important with a camera module like this. I found the Note20 Ultra’s focusing system totally adequate in most cases, though, when you get close, it often encourages you to back up slightly and zoom in to 2x. That’s actually a handy and accurate tip for most people and I was glad to see it happen automatically. 

From a video standpoint, I still found the iPhone 11 Pro Max image quality slightly better overall, but there’s not a huge difference. The Note20 Ultra lets you shoot up to 8K resolution. If you’re shooting in a situation with a lot of light, that mode can actually be useful for pulling 33-megapixel screenshots out of a video after you’ve already shot it. Shooting 8K for strictly video purposes, however, is mostly a waste. The footage takes up too much space, is hard to edit, and limits some of the shooting features you can use during a shoot. 

Samsung has included some clever audio options for video shooting. You can use the built-in microphones, a USB option, or even use the Bluetooth mic in the Galaxy Buds if you want to narrate some action or do voice over. It’s the kind of thing that’s very cool if you know about it and dig into the menus, but I expect many users will never encounter and just shoot with the stock settings.

The S Pen

Finally, we arrive at the feature that earns the Note its name. The S Pen still slides into the bottom of the device, but now it has moved to the other side. Samsung has reduced the latency involved with writing on the screen to put it on the same level as the iPad Pro. That makes writing on it feel more natural and satisfying. Even if you can’t draw and your handwriting looks like that of a small child scrambling to finish math homework on a school bus as it barrels down a bumpy road, writing with the S Pen still feels good. 

The best writing experience comes in the form of the Samsung Notes app. It makes the most of the improved handwriting recognition for handy features like aligning your scrawled text into neat rows and recording audio as you write so you can hear what was happening as you made a specific note. 

The S Pen is still relatively tiny and I wouldn’t want to use it as my primary method of taking notes for a long period of time. But it’s great for writing shorter notes during an interview, especially with the audio playback feature. Even with all of that going for it, it’s still not quite enough for me to shift all of my note-collecting habits over to Samsung’s software, but it was way closer than I would have guessed. 

Overall experience

The Note20 Ultra is undeniably impressive. Performance feels very snappy thanks to the latest Snapdragon processor and 12 GB RAM. The high-refresh-rate screen makes things feel even faster because content shows up on the screen immediately. 

As you’d expect, 5G connectivity comes baked in and it supports both common types employed by carriers here in the US. I was connected to a 5G network at my house, but certainly didn’t experience 5G speeds that would impress my pals. However, that’s likely more a symptom of the current state of 5G networks than it is anything to do with the phone itself. As the network gets better, so too will the phone. 

You likely already know if you’re planning on buying this phone. If you’re upgrading from a previous version, don’t expect a revolution when it comes to experience. If you’re jumping from an older phone, the screen performance really is a big differentiator, especially if you spend a lot of time watching content or playing high-end mobile games. The base model ships with 128 GB storage, which seems a little paltry considering the price, and it’ll cost you $150 to jump up to 512 GB on top of the already pricy phone. When you add it all up, the decision comes down to what you want your phone to do. If you want ample power and tons of opportunities to tweak settings and performance, then you’ll get it. If you want the biggest, flashiest phone around that can handle whatever you throw at it for the next couple years, it can give you that too. Just make sure it’ll fit in your pockets.

Film has a power that’s mighty, and one of my favorite things is championing a film, getting absolutely blissed-out, and transforming into a cinematic evangelist. The right film can open eyes, change a life, and make the unbearable a little easier to bear. But what if you had the power to prevent a great film from becoming a train wreck?

Office Space and Clue are some of the most beloved comedies ever made. They were also disasters at the box office. One of the most frustrating aspects of this job is witnessing a slow-motion cinematic train wreck, particularly when it’s undeserved. If you see enough movies and think about them, after a while you start to develop a sense of when and why certain films tank. Let’s bear in mind that train wrecks come in all shapes and sizes.

Sometimes the problem is with the material itself. Green Lantern is a movie about a cosmic superhero that does everything it possibly can to not be cosmic. A notorious failure, the film had a $200 million budget, only made $219 million worldwide and nearly destroyed the career of Ryan Reynolds.

Sometimes the concept is great, but the execution doesn’t work. Consider the idea of a bubbly high school girl who is destined to be a vampire hunter. Joss Whedon ran with that concept and wrote a script about it. Unfortunately, director Fran Rubel Kuzui didn’t appear to get it, and 1992’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer failed theatrically. Whedon would have to take the idea to television in order to help it bloom.

The worst kind of train wreck is when a movie has a strong concept, solid execution, and it still crashes and burns upon release. It’s a genuinely tragic situation when the talent and passion of a group of filmmakers is met with a collective “meh.” I’m very worried that’s exactly what’s going to happen with the new comedy Booksmart, and it deserves so much better.

Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) are high school seniors who seem to be on the fast track to success. They have been best friends since forever, studied hard, and strategically participated in every elective possible. What’s that relentless focus gotten them? On the one hand, Molly is class valedictorian, and she’s heading to Yale in the fall and the beginning of a glittering career. Amy has plans to help underprivileged women in Botswana. The odds are pretty good that these two are going to make a mark in the world.

On the other hand? Their focus comes with a cost. Molly’s peers view her as a pretentious scold, and Amy’s peers generally don’t know she’s even there. That’s okay by Amy…mostly. One of her classmates is a girl named Ryan (Victoria Ruesga), and Amy nurses a pretty serious crush. Amy’s been out for a few years, but maybe Ryan could be her first love?

It’s the day before their graduation, and the plan is for Molly and Amy to share a celebratory cake, watch some Ken Burns documentaries, and prepare for the rest of their lives. That was the plan until Molly comes to a shattering realization. While her hyper-focus has gotten her into Yale, her less studious peers are still heading for great schools and amazing careers, while still partying up a storm.

Needless to say, Molly is pissed. Now, she’s determined to have one night of hedonism, and she sees her chance. Nick (Mason Gooding) is one of the popular kids, and he’s throwing a massive party on Graduation Eve. All Molly and Amy need to do now is find out where the party is. That’s not going to be easy.

What we have here is a coming-of-age comedy made with intelligence, style, and a relentless sense of humor. What we also have here is what could be viewed as a niche film scheduled to go up against box office juggernauts like Aladdin and John Wick: Chapter 3. Is it any wonder that Booksmart came in sixth place last weekend with a disappointing $6.9 million profit? The accepted wisdom, if you can call it that, is that Booksmart is a failure.

From a directing standpoint, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This is director Olivia Wilde’s first feature film. Do a little research, and you’ll see that she’s been a working actor for several years. She’s also produced a number of documentaries, directed a couple of music videos, and worked on both big studio movies and small independent films. All that experience gave her the training she needed to make a hilarious and smart film with a distinctive voice. From snide quips to the almost Bugs Bunny antics of rich girl Gigi (Billie Lourd), Wilde’s sense of humor is on full display. Plus, in a world where studio comedies are often shot in the dullest way possible, Wilde’s film is colorfully lit and imaginatively shot. A house party feels unexpectedly and appropriately dreamy, and a drug trip features absolutely bananas energy. This is the best-looking comedy I’ve seen since Game Night.

Ordinarily, the presence of five credited screenwriters is a portent of doom. Multiple bullets have been dodged since the screenplay is about more than the hijinks of a couple of teenagers. It’s about two smart young women who have a not-great habit of assuming their peers are completely one-dimensional. The goofball stoner actually has a six-figure coding gig with Google locked up, and the girl who’s been saddled with a slutty reputation is perceptive and Yale-bound. Bound up within the ridiculous situations and plentiful f-bombs is some very strong character work.

The strong script and assured direction are what allows the cast to shine. Beanie Feldstein’s Molly is the showier role, and Feldstein absolutely goes for it. She’s got some serious comic skills, and she puts it to impressive use playing a simultaneously laser-focused and misguided young woman. Kaitlyn Dever’s Amy is the quieter half, yet she makes a meal out of her unrequited crush and quiet mortification toward her best friend’s steamroller attitude. Feldstein and Dever have an outstanding comedic partnership, and they play off each other beautifully.

They say that, in Hollywood, nobody knows anything. Odds are Annapurna Pictures were hoping for something along the lines of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a smaller-budgeted film that survived on positive word-of-mouth and was in theaters for a year. Maybe Booksmart got off to a slow start due to a poorly timed release schedule. Maybe it was unrealistic to assume it would be a $100 million hit.

While I don’t pretend to have any kind of real influence, what I do know is that I screwed up and should have reviewed this film last week instead of the not-so-awesome Brightburn. There’s still time, though. You might be tempted to wait for Netflix on this one. I’m asking you — don’t let this film become a train wreck. Go see Booksmart immediately, if not sooner. I think you’ll love it.

Why don’t Americans save?

A new report from the Center for Financial Services Innovation says that only 28% of Americans are financially healthy. And it reinforces something we already knew: The U.S. saving rate sucks. Americans don't save.

The U.S. Financial Health Pulse divides people into three tiers of financial health.

Financially healthy people (28% of the U.S., 70 million people) are “spending saving, borrowing, and planning in a way that will allow them to be resilient and pursue opportunities over time.”

Financially coping people (55%, 138 million) are “struggling with some, but not necessarily all, aspects of their financial lives.”

Financially vulnerable people (17%, 42 million) are “struggling with all, or nearly all, aspects of their financial lives.”

The full report is huge — it's an 80-page PDF! — and filled with data based on survey responses from 5000 people. The document does a great job of presenting the info, separating it into four major sections (spend, save, borrow, plan), then comparing how people in each financial health tier differ in their approaches.

The U.S. Saving Rate

There's a tendency in some circles to blame outside forces for our national inability to save. “People can't save because the economy sucks. Incomes are low and expenses are high.”

I'm not going to say that stagnating wages don't play a part in the problem, but I dont think they're a primary factor. In fact, if you look at a chart of the U.S. saving rate over time, you can see a surprising pattern. (This data comes from the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.)

See those grey shaded areas in the chart above? Those are recessions. When the economy is bad, people tend to save more. When the economy is booming — the mid 1980s, the late 1990s, the mid 2000s, now — people save less. This takes the teeth out of the whole “people can't save because of the economy” argument.

I think the problem with the American saving rate is complex. There are many forces working together to depress saving rates in this country.

Why Don't Americans Save?

Many writers and pundits have tried to tackle this topic over the past twenty years. I feel like most of the analysis is facile and/or guided by a political agenda. Deep thought on the subject — such as this fine article from The Atlantic — is rare.

In that Atlantic article from 2016, author Derek Thompson explores five different theories, examining the pros and cons of each. Thompson says these five factors are each a piece of the problem:

Americans stopped saving when their incomes stopped growing. (Like me, he finds this argument incomplete and/or unconvincing.)

The poor and middle class went into debt to buy houses. There is a clear correlation between increased homeownership and decreased saving.

U.S. policies make it easy to not save money. It's too easy to access our retirement accounts, pulling out money we oughtn't pull out.

The U.S. is uniquely susceptible to conspicuous consumption. This is a subject I've been discussing with folks by email lately. Look for future articles about “identity economics”.

The pressure to keep up with richer neighbors has been greatly exacerbated by rising income inequality.

Thompson doesn't believe any single factor is wholly to blame. He thinks it's a combination of these things. (He and I also agree that anyone at any income level is capable of saving. He writes: “The poor can save more money, and it’s not offensive to suggest so.” Preach!)

In addition to Thompson's five factors, I'd propose three other possible reasons Americans don't save.

We're not encouraged to save. There's a vast, sophisticated advertising industry designed to separate people from their money. Nobody believes ads work on them, yet they're working on somebody! Otherwise companies wouldn't pump hundreds of billions into advertising each year. (Trust me: Ads affect you.) But there are precious few ads encouraging us to spend less and save more.

We're not clear on what we want to use our money for. Here at Get Rich Slowly, I'm adamant that readers need to find their purpose in life. You need some vague idea of where you're headed, at the very least. Without a vision of the future, you can't make smart choices about your money in the present. Spending on one thing is as good as spending on another. With a destination in mind, it's easy to know when your spending undermines your long-term goals.

We're taught that money is complicated. It's not. The basic math of money is shockingly simple. It's the psychology and behavior that's difficult to master. There's another vast industry of financial advisors with a vested interest in convincing you that this stuff is difficult and that you must have help. More people need to know that yes, they can manage their own money effectively.

Looking back at that chart of how the U.S. saving rate has changed over time, I also wonder if some of the patterns can be attributed to the forever fallacy. When times are bad, we believe they'll always be bad, so we save more. When times are good, we tend to believe they'll always be good, so we spend more.

Solving the Problem

It's one thing to point out that there's a problem — a problem we're all aware of — but it's something else entirely to provide solutions.

In his Atlantic article, Thompson advocates government-level changes: banning lotteries, expanding Social Security, limiting withdrawals from retirement accounts. Perhaps these measures would be effective, but I'm not a fan of looking for societal solutions to personal problems. (Remember: I believe that becoming proactive is the number-one secret to wealth, freedom, and happiness.)

Other folks I admire are proponents of greater financial education. They want personal finance classes in high schools and/or increased financial literacy education for adults. The Plutus Foundation, for instance, is working hard to increase financial literacy by funding a variety of community-based programs.

From my experience, the trouble is that financial literacy fails more often than not. Most programs are targeted at teaching math and mechanics; they ignore behavior. It's not the math and mechanics that are the issue! Until we turn our attention from traditional financial literacy to something else — behavioral literacy? — these programs will remain ineffective.

So, what's the solution? I wish I had one.

Personally, my answer is to continue providing solid money advice for those actively hunting for help. My goal is to make Get Rich Slowly a treasure trove of information for those who stumble upon it. (Testimonials from readers like you seem to indicate I'm meeting my aim!)

Lately, the GRS team and I have been talking a lot about who this site is for. Conventional wisdom is that in order to be successful, a site has to be laser-focused on a specific audience. Get Rich Slowly is not laser-focused…and I don't want it to be. I want this to be a place for everyone to get help with money.

Yesterday, as I was massaging some old Money Boss material into the archives here at GRS, it occurred to me that perhaps I do have an answer to these two problems: Why don't Americans save? What audience is GRS for?

At Money Boss, my goal was to get people to manage their household finances as if they were managing a small business. Everybody understands that a business needs to earn a profit in order to survive and thrive, but few realize the same applies their personal lives. “Profit” for a business is the same as “savings” for an individual.

What if I took this metaphor, a metaphor that I thought I was going to retire, and used it to provide editorial direction at Get Rich Slowly? What if I tried to promote this as widely as possible, to in some small way encourage Americans to save more?

That's exactly what I intend to do. My mission in life is to help as many people as possible learn to manage their money so they can earn a “personal profit”. I want them to use this profit to fund whatever their personal mission happens to be.

I can't change the habits of an entire country. But, one person at a time, I can help a handful of people learn to save.

Now this didn’t happen overnight. But it worked. This is truth, folks – focusing on what I wanted to expand in my marriage, and in me, popped the negative balloons and replaced them with vibrant helium-filled balloons that to this day continue to lift my marriage.

5 ways to apply this approach

If you want to make a serious attempt at applying this approach to your marriage, here are some specific ways to do it. Choose one or two that fit you and be diligent for the next 90 days.

Make a daily habit of thinking about one positive aspect of your spouse. This can be during your morning getting-dressed time, or during your shower, or while you’re walking the dog. You don’t have to come up with a new something every day; just concentrate on what’s most meaningful for that day.
