The Curious Case of the Casablanca Killer
Deemed a three at best, the case of an invisible burglar in a historic cinema who stole nothing only caught Sherlock’s attention because he was bored. Also, he wanted to do John a favour. In the end, this proved to be a real stroke of luck. Otherwise, Sherlock would have missed an intriguing mystery that quickly ramped up in complexity.
The fic is complete and betaed.
Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
chapter 7 is up on AO3 !
-----
“Here they come,” John called out, “the police car has just driven up at the curb.” He had been sent downstairs to the foyer and given the task to keep watching out for Lestrade’s arrival while Sherlock looked at the video footage with Peter.
Through the door entered Sally Donovan with a grumpy looking Phillip Anderson in tow.
Sherlock pulled a face upon seeing them. However, he had expected their presence. What he had not expected though was Lestrade’s absence. To Sherlock’s immense disappointment and frustration, he realized that he would have to deal with these two without the DI who tolerated and respected Sherlock much more.
The dislike of each other’s presence was palpable and mutual. While Sally just stared for a moment, Anderson immediately began to rail at Sherlock.

Five Fics Friday: April 19/24
Happy Friday everyone! Check out today's selection of fics to get you through the weekend! And be sure to give the boosted fic some extra love, as it JUST finished being written! :D Enjoy!!
SIGNAL BOOSTING
The Curious Case of the Casablanca Killer by meet_me_in_samarra (G, 55,886 w., 16 Ch. || Post THoB, Case Fic, Bromance / Friendship, Clever John, John is a Conductor of Light, BAMF John / Sherlock, Sassy John, Cheeky Sherlock) – Deemed a three at best, the case of an invisible burglar in a historic cinema who stole nothing only caught Sherlock’s attention because he was bored. Also, he wanted to do John a favour. In the end, this proved to be a real stroke of luck. Otherwise, Sherlock would have missed an intriguing mystery that quickly ramped up in complexity.
RECENT MFLs
Licence to Kiss by fellshish (T, 13,740 w., 4 Ch. || Post-ASiB, Bond Jokes, Angst and Humour, First Kiss, Bed Sharing, Love Confessions, Mutual Pining) – John loves James Bond. For his Birthday, Sherlock decides to organise a spy adventure. Sherlock begs Mycroft for a real case with some extra gadgets. And perhaps some actors pretending to be criminals. What could possibly go wrong?
Guess Who's Coming for Christmas Dinner by Raina_at (E, 18,623+ w., 2/4 Ch. || WiP || University AU || Fake / Pretend Relationship, Accidental Fake Dating, , Oblivious John / Sherlock, Mistaken for Being in a Relationship, Christmas, Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Alcohol, Past Drug Use, Not-Nice Holmes Family) – Sherlock hates spending Christmas with his snobby parents. John has nowhere to go over the holidays. The heat in 221B is broken and their fridge is empty. Plus, Sherlock's parents will hate John. So of course Sherlock takes John along. It's not his fault that his parents assume John's his boyfriend. Of course John is perfect and all, but Sherlock doesn't do romance. So what harm can there be in pretending, if it makes his parents this mad?
Only Yesterday by Berty (T, 43,378+ w., 17/18 Ch. || Alternate Timelines / 'Yesterday' AU || Post-TRF, POV John, Grief, Mental Instability, Angst, Unrequited Love, Suspense, Scotland, Hurt John, Developing Relationship, Doctor John, John is a Mess) – Sherlock has been gone for two years and John Watson is doing okay. He goes to work. He sleeps (sometimes). He eats. He has colleagues, some of whom are even friends. He has purpose. If it's not a life as others might view it, it's a fair approximation. It's fine. He's fine. One night the lights go out and when they come back on everything is the same except for one important thing. For John it's the most important thing. And suddenly John is not fine at all.
RECENTLY BOOKMARKED LOKIUS FICS
Magic Like You by Anonymous (NR [M], 9,714 w., 5 Ch. || LOKI SERIES || Post-S2, Light Angst, Soft, Friends to Lovers, Jotunn Loki, Pining Loki, Heavy Pining, Bed Sharing, Jealous Loki, POV Loki, Living Together, First Kiss/Time) – Loki and Mobius are trying to carve out a new life for themselves after all the chaos and hurt and destruction that was caused by the TVA. This story explores Loki's new life and his relationship to Mobius through magic. (With lots of stupid fun and soft moments along the way, because with these two, it's inevitable.)

Speculating on the Unmade Cyberpunk 2077 Expansions
I lack hope for the other two planned expansions for Cyberpunk getting made, so I find myself pondering what might have been.
I think one thing that would have bounded the expansions is that they would have been set in Night City. Night City is a character unto itself in the game and the source material, which doesn't go outside the city much. A lot of work was put into the city, including places where there are no quests.
Also, the plot needs to at least seem to be offering V a solution to her dying problem. That's the motive for V doing all the major plot points in the game, while the rest is either helping Johnny save his soul, being able to pay rent, doing favors for friends, or V being mortally curious (many such cases).
That's a useful limit when pondering these never-to-be-made expansions, as is keeping in mind the themes, plot hooks, and existing "gaps" in the game map.
So:
The Arasaka Supercarrier & Arasaka internal politics
Del Coronado Bay is, effectively, a giant hole in the map that isn't used for anything. Existing aircraft carrier are essentially floating cities, so supercarrier Kujira- already named, discussed, and technically existing on the map- could be a "district" the size of Dogtown, easily. Saburo and Hanako traveled across the Pacific on this floating fortress, so it definitely isn't just all practical military asceticism. You'll have those military areas, as well as a hospital, luxury areas, labs, probably even simulated outdoor areas, and much more. The travel to and from the ship could play the role of hidden loading screen like the transition gates to and from Dogtown.
(Look at that concept art. That is some killer concept art.)
We get hints of Arasaka's internal turmoil in shards and in our interactions with Takemura and Hanako. It's the corp's internal turmoil that sets off the whole plot, really. We also know that Arasaka, and many other corps, tend to the cultish, especially in Japan, which is Kujira's home station. So post-Saburo strife to the point of shooting on Kujira is quite possible, with these conflicts serving the purpose of the gangs on land. There's also plenty of room for interpersonal drama- uncertainty about what is going on for employees far from home, the possibility that there are people who essentially live aboard the ship with their families considering the scale of the thing with their own social dynamics, Arasaka corporate backstabbing and secrets.
How would this all pull V onboard? Enter one Michiko Arasaka, granddaughter of Saburo, and her husband Marc Sanderson, one or both of whom get V onto the ship. "Oh not another damsel in distress!" First, couple in distress- more Casablanca, less Super Mario. Second, it's not about saving their lives, but choosing whether or not they come under Yorinobu's control or live free. This would not be black and white, for V, Johnny, or the player, as Yorinobu's motives are much more complicated than just corpo greed. The game ends with a non-solution for V where the pair get free of Arasaka or a solution tendered by Yorinobu, who in this expansion we'd get to learn more about. What this would look like, the mechanics of it, I don't know.
Oh, and we'd also figure out just what Netwatch wanted with the biochip and why Yorinobu insisted the engram on said biochip be Johnny.
Were I inclined to being hopeful, I'd say the convo you can have with Lizzy Wizzy after her Dogtown performance was hint at this one happening. She mentions that V could use spending some time at sea.
The Rest of North Oak & Follow-up to Black Dog
The other big map gap is the sealed off section of North Oak. There's a fully modeled, animated, and uninhabited country club up there, but it's locked off. It's a pretty big area, though I'm not sure how big. I wouldn't mind North Oak getting more filled in overall. I feel the bare minimum was done to it- time is my bet- and it should be more built-up based on in-game chatter. Not dense, but not so sparse.
All this would revolve around Angel (a fragment of Alt?) and the secret she'd keeping that is Johnny's frozen body. North Oak seems like a place she would be for some reason. A lot more glitz and glamor, given the locale. Exploring Alt, who is/was probably not a particularly good person (she made Soulkiller and while Johnny was a bastard, she was just as bad in that scene). This idea is a lot less defined and mostly exists because I swear Black Dog was written entirely to give Cyberpunk 2077 the option for a happy ending, then references were put into the game.
Ending Possibilties
So far, Johnny and V's story is missing only a few possible endings. One ending that isn't there, and I've seen only one fic exploring this, is stabilizing V's brain so how it is in the game is how it is, but with V not dying. I don't think either party views it as ideal, but also it means both live. Another is, of course, the widely explored idea where Johnny gets his own body back. Now, this could kill V, or leave V still dying, or fix everything. Phantom Liberty gave us 'V lives and is not left dying but Johnny is dead' and I would think every expansion would include some new version of an ending addressing the game's core conflict because it gives it stakes.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

Just A Bunch Of Movies That People Should See One Day
Alright so I went way overboard but when I set out to make a list of films people should check out I’m gonna take it a little to seriously. That being said here’s a shit ton of films that I think everyone should check out if they can. I’m definitely missing a lot but every single one of these is in order by year of release. So here it goes.

To start here are some classic films (1900-1930). If you’re a film major (or someone into cinematic history) at one point you’ll watch these or will probably be told to watch these. I’ll bold my personal favorites for anyone who isn’t into cinematic history.

Update on my casefic
Today I wrote about half of the final chapter so I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Most of the fic is already beta-ed and I will edit as soon as I have finished writing. It's at 53k currently.
Mainly spelling issues but thanks to my brilliant and observing beta @peageetibbs there are also some plot inconsistencies to fix.
My plan still is to start posting around mid-February.

On Sunday I'll start posting my casefic !
Finally, my casefic is completely written and betaed!
In December 2022 I was thinking about a birthday present for my friend @peageetibbs . I came up with the idea of writing and gifting a fic, Sherlock would solve a mystery set in a cinema because my friend runs a cinema in the spare time IRL. Easy case, short fic, max 8k. Of course, the case evolved and became more complicated and the fic amounted to 56k and 15 chapters in the end.
It's the first real casefic I have written and I am very proud of it. All in all, it took me over a year to finish, including two longer breaks in between. I have missed the deadline for last year's birthday but this year, the fic will be in time.
I will be posting the first chapter on AO3 Sunday 18th.
Uploads will happen every Wednesday and Friday.
If anyone likes to be tagged on tumblr when it updates, let me know!

“Morning, John. Your phone received a text message one hour ago.”
“Morning.” John yawned, “What did it say?”
Sherlock huffed and put down the violin. “Well, I did not check. Since you made it abundantly clear two weeks ago that reading one’s flatmate’s texts is off-limits.” He took the phone and tossed it at John who barely caught it without letting it fall.
“Right, yes. Didn’t think you’d obey, though.”
Sherlock shot John an evil eye that only made him grin.
“It’s the clinic. They’ve got three doctors of today’s morning shift fallen ill with a stomach bug and they ask if I could do some extra hours before my regular shift this afternoon. They’re swamped with patients.”
Sherlock sighed, “And you’ll say yes, of course.”
“I am a doctor after all. As you well know.” John scratched his head. “What’s on today?”
“I’ve got an appointment with the antique’s expert at the insurance company that manages the policy for the chandelier. Then I want to check again if Fenton has shown up at his shop. At 2PM I’ll take the train to Swindon and will be back here at around 6.30PM.”

“And don’t you start ranting about inferior feeble brains or something like that.” Sherlock’s mouth snapped shut in a comical way. “You’ll get my input when I’m able to actually listen to what you’ve found out which is not now. Go and use that frantic energy of yours to do something productive. Make tea and toast!”
Sherlock froze, shellshocked but immediately protested. “Something productive? You can’t be serious, John! I’ve researched the whole night… John? John!”
Just like this, John went into the bathroom, softly but decidedly closing the door and letting a scandalized Sherlock grumble about productivity on the outside. Ten minutes in, John heard the kettle whistling over the shower and knew that – for once – he had outwitted the world’s only consulting detective.

“I have to take a look at the footage of your security cameras.”
Sherlock’s sonorous voice catapulted John out of the pleasant musings about his future blogging.
The demand did not go down well with Macmillan. “Why?” He frowned and repeatedly rapped the capped end of his fountain pen softly against a stack of sticky notes. “The footage has been looked over a hundred times by a hundred different people and nobody found anything even remotely suspicious.”
“It’s not been looked over by me.” Sherlock scoffed. “I’m well-known for my ability to find things where everybody else has failed to do so before.”
The clash of wills amounted to a staring contest that lasted a staggering full minute until Macmillan looked away and reluctantly agreed. Then Macmillan and Sherlock began to haggle over the exact terms as to how the viewing of the footage should be conducted and John felt like he was listening to shrewish fishwives at the market.

Noticing John looking at him in surprise, Sherlock deigned to at least explain that he needed to acquire this Casablanca movie in order to get an idea what this drivel is all about.
“It’s research for the case, obviously,” Sherlock quickly added when he saw John’s raised eyebrow, “I gather you know it already?”
“Of course I do, it’s a classic.”
“That doesn’t mean one needs to watch it.”
“You’re just pissed that you have such a huge lack of common knowledge concerning modern culture.”
“Pah. I’d not go as far as calling this inane movie business culture.” Sherlock grumbled and forcefully hit the “send” button, making John chuckle.

Chapter 1 is up on AO3 !!!
“Sherlock, Sherlock!”
John called out while bounding up the stairs to their flat. Albeit being a bit out of breath, his voice was loud enough to carry up all the way into the living room where John was sure Sherlock would still be sulking on the sofa and only wrapped in a sheet. Exactly like John had left him four hours ago.
“I’ve got a case for you, Sherlock!”
John expected to hear some “excited detective noises” as he called Sherlock’s joyous exclamations when he learned about mutilated corpses and locked-room conundrums but everything remained silent.
Odd.
