Jimmy broke the curse fair and square, but he’s still the canary. Lizzie died in the End, alone. Not to another player, not to the effects of the game itself, she just fell. A tragedy in its own right, it took minutes for the others to even notice she was gone. The game barely acknowledged her passing, as it was so beyond its reach. She died first, yes, but the canary’s call means nothing to those beyond the coal mine.

canary curse things. thinking about canary curse things
i'm hesitant to say the canary curse has been broken—what, no, of course it has been, jimmy died second instead of first, and the canary curse is all about dying first— okay hear me out i swear i make sense
my thought is that patterns can change. patterns aren't always static ones. just because something new happened this time around doesn't mean the pattern's been broken, it may have just changed its rules a bit.
joel had a pattern of having no true allies up until double or limited life, where it instead became a pattern of being isolated, for example
now, before we get into the canary curse specifically, let's talk about some other patterns
scott and martyn tend to drag themselves as well as their allies up the leaderboard. they both tend to outlive their allies. grian tends to kill his allies. ...i feel like i should put more here but that's all i can think of right now
now, the way i see it, is scott, martyn, and jimmy in particular all have some sort of weight to them. positive meaning they drag themselves and their allies up the leaderboard, negative meaning the opposite. scott and martyn have a positive weight, whereas jimmy has a negative one.
what i think's happened here is that martyn and jimmy's weights have tugged on each other, and as a result, martyn turned yellow and red first instead of much later on, and jimmy died second instead of first.
jimmy's pull is strong, i think, and so he tends to die first every time. just because he tends to die first every time doesn't make that a rule, though - it just makes it a pattern, one that's been broken. the pattern that hasn't been broken, though, is jimmy being one of the earliest to die, and jimmy dragging his allies down the leaderboard with him.
jimmy died first in 3rd life, and dragged scott down to 10th, and scott finally turned yellow right before jimmy died. jimmy died first in last life, and dragged mumbo down with him, and they were a similar color pretty much the whole time. jimmy died first in double life, and dragged tango down with him. jimmy died first in limited life, and joel died quickly after. jimmy died second in secret life, and dragged martyn's color down with him.
martyn, though, doesn't die yet, because of his positive weight. he's often tugged further up the leaderboard, and so while jimmy may drag his color down and martyn ends up first yellow and red, martyn still manages to stay afloat.
martyn is stubborn is the thing, lmao. he stays alive out of spite and just because he wants to, and so he does, and he makes sure he does. now that the stakes are higher and one wrong move could mean losing everything, he's being a lot more careful than he was earlier on.
and let me just reiterate for a second - he's stubborn. once he's got an idea, he's locked onto that idea until he gets it done or literally can't anymore. martyn will drive himself up the wall before he gives up on something and even then he'll need convincing or more likely a distraction. he didn't give up on ren in third life til he died and couldn't do anything anymore. he didn't give up on trying to kill scott in last life til he died and couldn't do anything anymore. he didn't give up on getting a diamond chestplate in secret life until he got it despite how much it cost him in the end. outside the life series, even, i'm rewatching rats right now- martyn will try to climb a wall over and over and over until he gets it or something gets in the way. he'll be texturing a model and complain to chat about how painful it is and still decide to spend the next hour and a half getting the damn thing done even though he should've logged off for bedtime 2 hours ago. (yes martyn i am calling you out, enjoy)
and so martyn doesn't die! he's yellow first, he's red first, and all other red names die, but martyn doesn't. because yeah, maybe he's impulsive, but he's in this for himself and himself alone and there's no way in hell he's dealing with a wither and a warden that's just killed three people. (he did try and steal the kill though. martyn do you remember what happened last time you tried to steal the kill, you fell into the void and died)
jimmy isn't as stubborn. jimmy's a lot more forgiving, a lot more lenient, and as much as he's being more aggressive this season, he's reckless about it and impulsive and his reputation isn't helping him here.
jimmy lets things happen to him. as upset as he might act about it, he never actually does anything about it, and it gets him killed. he's afraid to break the rules, he's afraid to make people uncomfortable or upset or hurt, he starts genuinely tearing up at the thought of pulling a bait and switch on skizz, and that's the kind of thing martyn does on a daily basis lmao
jimmy is forgiving and passive, martyn and scott don't forget so easily and aren't afraid to make people upset, grian's somewhere in between.

there's something about jimmy and martyn this season
four times over jimmy has walked the well-worn path into the realm of death all alone, his feet sinking in the inky, star-speckled puddles of the void and his hand shaking on the icy doorknob of After. and the familiarity— and oh, is it so familiar— never manages to suffocate the dread each and every time. the knowledge that this door, these wings, those eyes are all horrifyingly inevitable, following him, miraculously, across worlds.
until now. he steps in the pond of the void and there's a warm hand in his, so warm jimmy knows it to be unwelcome in this place. no one has ever been here with him before, and never in his endless lives and deaths has he ever been left staring wide-eyed at theback of someone's head, the back of martyn's head.
and martyn leads the way. there are no words— there never have been in this place— but his hand is firm and real in jimmy's. he walks confidently, the soles of his shoes marring the ground he walks across with ripples that never stop. and this time, martyn reaches out, and swings that haunting door wide open, ceasing its endless whispers all at once.
when martyn turns around, his eyes lock with jimmy's, and he doesn't speak— no one can, here, jimmy is sure of it— but he might as well, really. his eyes are tired, but they are certain. martyn says nothing, but jimmy hears him. of course he does.
follow me this time, would you?

If Jimmy does (against all odds) break the canary curse this season, I’m going to be attributing it to three things:
The theory that Martyn kissed it off of him at the start of the game (after he hit Jimmy illegally)
The Watchers rigging the game against Martyn
(This one is actually my idea) Skizz’s blessing. The fandom frequently pins Skizz as angelic and his blessing has been an omen of victory in seasons past. In episode 4, Skizz comments on Jimmy’s fighting spirit, encouraging him to keep searching for new solutions. He calls him a winner. He sounds like he believes in him. Even more, however, he sounds like he knows something Jimmy doesn’t

Something, something, canary curse. Something about how Jimmy was a lot more of a violent menace this season. Something about how the canary, the sensitive bird that's supposed to die before the rest while the danger is still only on the horizon, dies in the middle of the chaos. Dies, as world destroying forces are set loose on the entirety of the server and no one is safe. Dies, when it's too late to bail. Too late to warn anyone.
Something about a frail bird growing tougher, and singing despite itself. Something about the repetitive reminder of his stubborn existence. "I'm still here, don't forget me, don't mourn yet." Something about being on the brink of death for so long, about being red, and clinging to that last bit of life.
Something about cruel existence. Of dying time and time again for the sake of others living, of "if I go down, you'll go down with me".
Something about having time to sing the second verse, where bird song turns into a requiem.

Jimmy might be The Canary but Grian is The Catalyst.
catalyst: a person or thing that precipitates an event.
(precipitates: cause (an event or situation, typically one that is undesirable) to happen suddenly, unexpectedly, or prematurely.)
This is something that I noticed while looking at Timmys deaths and last episodes. Grian is always in someway responsible for his death.
Spoilers for the entire Life series.
-> Third life:
• The plan and the bunker used in the Attack of the Desert was designed by Grian.
•The reason Dogwarts attacked was because Grian and Scar stole their banner
•Grian tells him "Yeah, you can go into the bunker."
•The bunker in which he dies in because of his struggle of getting down the escape route in the bunker.
-> Last Life:
•The simplest one. Grian chases after Jimmy because Jimmy was trying to kill Grian and during that Jimmy falls and dies.
•The height Jimmy fell wasn't enough to kill a player but the previous damage by Grian's sword sealed his fate.
•(And Grian kills Mumbo seconds later)
->Double Life:
•We know Jimmy was killed by an enderman. But why was he even outside at night?
•Because he and the other reds just finished killing Grian and Scar for being the last greens.
•He was on his way back to the Ranch and there he was killed by an enderman.
-> Limited Life:
•Grian was the one to tell Joel to let Jimmy push the TnT minecart.
•"Let Tim do it. He needs the time." Direct quote from Grian, like, 3-5 seconds before Jimmy's death.
•Jimmy had about an hour left. He could have found another way to gain more time.
•(Still love the headcannon that either Grian or The Watchers pushed Jimmy off.)
-> Secret Life:
•Sure, Jimmy didn't die first but I would argue that the Curse didn't die. Also Grian is still responsible for Jimmy's death.
•Grian's and Etho's attempt at making the wither and the warden fight causes Jimmy's (and Mumbo's) death because they were trying to fight/flee form them.
The Canary warns other of the upcoming danger while The Catalyst is the cause of said danger.
Jimmy is called The Canary because everytime he dies thing get more deadly and chaotic afterwards. And what is Grian if not an agent of chaos. Especially after Jimmy dies and he turns red.

It's no wonder Third Life Flower Husbands is such a tragedy, literally the two people the Watchers despise most (even if they didn't know how much they would hate Scott yet) in the world got married and tried to live peacefully in their death game of pain and misery.
They never stood a chance.
