LEGENDS OF GUITAR: The Man . . The Myth . . The Guitar. Johnny Winter was the first white Texas bluesman to make it on a big scale. In 1968, he released his first album, The Progressive Blues Experiment. Soon after Johnny met the Chicago Blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who invited Winter to join him and Al Kooper on stage at the Fillmore East during a December 1968 performance. Columbia Records officials at the show were very impressed and signed Johnny to a very large advance, $600,000. Johnny Winter’s first Columbia Records release was logically titled Johnny Winter and included the same personnel as The Progressive Blues Experiment; bassist Tommy Shannon, drummer Uncle John Turner, and Edgar Winter on keyboards and saxophone. It was a major success. Second Winter followed in 1969 plus great success in concerts – and an affair with Janis Joplin – that led to an historic Madison Square Garden concert. Winter went on to play in the Muddy Waters Band and paired with just about every top Blues artist of the 1970s and 80s. Three albums produced by Winter for Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live (1979) have won Grammy Awards. Several of Winter’s own albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.
Decades on from his death, Stevie Ray Vaughan is still being discovered by new generations. In the decades since his passing, SRV’s impact on the music scene has become more and more pronounced. His influence – his searing guitar style, eloquent songwriting and consummate musicianship – is undeniable on the new generation of blues rockers like Joe Bonamassa, Philip Sayce and John Mayer, while his classic albums such as Texas Flood and Couldn’t Stand The Weather are now justifiable stalwarts of the blues canon. His music seemed to unite everyone: tattooed Chicano bikers, besuited lawyers and crystal-carrying New Agers. The sound of Stevie Ray’s stinging Strat and gritty voice went directly to the hearts of the huddled masses. You see, that old blues adage is true: What goes around comes around . . May their memory endure.

[Album] Texas und Spooner Oldham veröffentlichen gemeinsames Album "The Muscle Shoals Sessions"!
Tumblr media
Mit "Would I Lie to You" und "Say What You Want" gibt es bereits zwei Songs daraus zu hören.
Live aufgenommen im renommierten Fame Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, enthält das Album zwölf der größten Hits von Texas sowie zwei Coverversionen ("Would I Lie To You" von Charles and Eddie und "Save The Last Dance" von The Drifters). Die auf das Wesentliche reduzierten Songs, angeführt von der gefühlvollen Stimme von Sharleen Spiteri und untermalt von Spooner Oldham am Klavier, erweisen sich dabei als ebenso eigenständige und zeitlose Klassiker.
“To have the option to go to Muscle Shoals to record was like being a little kid in a sweet shop”, erzählt Sängerin Sharleen Spiteri über die Erfahrung, die mit Texas im Sommer 2023 zuletzt das karriereübergreifende "The Very Best Of 1989 - 2023" veröffentlicht hatte. “Working with Spooner was inspiring, fun and he’s just a wonderful human being. The fact that Northern Soul music has been such a massive influence for Texas made the fit with Spooner just right. Him writing ‘Keep On Talking’ was essential to us recording it for this album.”
Als Songwriter, Produzent und Keyboarder prägte Oldham, der 2009 in die Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen wurde, Klassiker wie "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Mustang Sally" und "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)". Nachdem er 1967 Memphis verlassen hatte, tat sich Oldham mit dem Sänger Dan Penn in den American Studios von Chips Moman zusammen, wo die Beiden zu einem der besten Songwriter-Duos des Landes wurden. Gemeinsam schrieben sie unter anderem Hits für Aretha Franklin ("Do Right Woman"), die Box Tops ("Cry Like a Baby") und Janis Joplin ("A Woman Left Lonely"). Nach dem Ende der bahnbrechenden Ära des Southern Soul komponierte Oldham auch noch für andere Artists, darunter Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne und die Everly Brothers.

Rock-A-Billy Rock And Roll And Hillbilly (CD3) (2012). "Western Girls," a favorite of the numerous cowgirls who follow his career, and the Merle Kilgore-Tillman Franks tune "The Wild One" all demonstrate how effective Marty Stuart is. Opening with the title cut, an infectious romp that demands your attention, and ending on a high note with a love song, "Since I Don't Have You," crafted by Stuart and another tragically overlooked supernova, Mark Collie, this is one heck of an album. On par with Dwight Yoakam's debut, Hillbilly Rock sets the tone for a whole new faction of neo-traditionalists. With a new groove that runs just left of center, while still retaining a classic country & western-bluegrass flair, Hillbilly Rock is a wild ride to what surely must be honky tonk heaven. Hillbilly Rock is the epitome of what the adult Marty Stuart is all about. Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs.
