More good mail. Comps of the Supergirl :Girl of Steel trade from DC. Collects two of the Superman Adventures stories we did with STAS storyboard artist/comics artist Bret Blevins and legendary comics inker Terry Austin. We used background material and ideas that we developed for the Supergirl intro episodes of the animated series, it's some of my favorite superhero work we've done.There's some Fourth World stuff in the first story and it's always a blast to work with anything Jack Kirby. And I've always been fond of the classic /traditional Supergirl character and straightforward adventure stories with heart. The trade also collects Supergirl - centric stories from the later animated JLA comics. Only $10, sort of digest sized for the younger set. Happy 70th birthday to John Byrne. If you read superhero comics in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Byrne was everywhere — X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, The Hulk, Superman, She-Hulk, Namor. As writer/artist Byrne was never afraid to kill off, change or replace a beloved character, which didn’t always please readers, but he kept it interesting and created some of the great story arcs in the stagnation-prone superhero genre. (Chris Claremont should be mentioned as Byrne’s X-Men scripter and Terry Austin as Byrne’s classic inker.) Here’s a full-page image of the title character from “The Last Galactus Story,” Byrne’s serial that ran in Epic Illustrated in the mid-‘80s. Byrne had this to say about this sequence on his forum, "There were a lot of annoyed fans, I can tell you, when X-MEN 136 came out, and there was no confrontation between Dark Phoenix and the Surfer.

This is a good example, as a matter of fact, of just how much impact the writer can have, for those who still wonder what Stan did, vs what Jack did. I was heavily plotting the book by this point, and that page of reactions shots was something I tossed in as I was drawing. Chris, unfortunately, chose to script it as if the Surfer was going to head off and intercept Phoenix -- but that didn't happen. After all, by the time I saw the finished issue, I'd already drawn about 4 issues beyond it!

Years later, a writer showed up at Marvel who had impressed Shooter, and Shooter asked me if there were any "plums" that could be given to that writer for specials or graphic novels. I mentioned this "untold tale", and Shooter asked me to write up a plot, which I did. For some reason, the project did not go any further than that, tho years later I found a copy of my plot (written on a typewriter!) and pitched it to the X-Office. Again, we were all set to go, and then somehow the energy just trailed off . . ."
