Had a bad day at work yesterday, so I came home and made an Only Fools And Horses couples playlist, like the soppy sod I am. It’s not very long, just a sort of theme song for each pairing. Not too original, but I think it comes together okay.
Del Boy/Racquel - Afterglow (Of Your Love) - Small Faces
Rodney/Cassandra - Ain’t No Sunshine - Bill Withers
Boycie/Marlene - Stuck With You - Huey Lewis & The News
Del Boy/Marlene - Rockin’ Around (With You) - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Trigger/Julie the Barmaid - My Funny Valentine - Etta James
Trigger/Marlene - Can’t Buy Me Love - The Beatles
Denzil/Corinne - My Baby Just Cares For Me - Nina Simone

John Challis as Terrance Aubrey 'Boycie' Boyce in Only Fools and Horses.
First appeared in the episode 'Go West Young Man' - the second episode of the first series. It first aired 15 September 1981. Boycie had the fifth most appearances on the show after Del, Rodney, Uncle Albert and Trigger.
Probably had the most recognisable laugh on TV.

The only performance was at the Stourport Civic Center in Stourport-on-Severn.
Challis was best known for appearing as a ruthless used car dealer in Terrance Aubrey ‘Boycie’ Boyce as a beloved comedy series alongside Peckham, South London, Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
Most recently, he played Monty Staines in four Benidorm series on ITV.
In addition to television, he has appeared extensively in theater, film and radio programs.
According to his website, he shares his home with his wife on the ruins of a 13th-century convent in Herefordshire.

I don’t know how intentional it was, but John Sullivan managed to slip a few references to the actors themselves into OFAH, and it’s so sweet. Like, in one episode Del mentions working at the Tower of London. In real life, David Jason had gone there to study the ravens, in preparation for playing a raven in a play. Boycie mentions how proud he is of his garden, in real life, John Challis loved gardening and even owned a gardening centre at one stage. Roger Lloyd Pack was a huge music fan and enjoyed playing the piano and singing with his friends and family. Trigger is never shown to be musical, himself, but he likes to listen to Uncle Albert play.

One of my favourite OFAH things, is when Boycie says something tasteless, and Trigger gives him such a fucking look.

I think I’ve pointed out before, that when Boycie is on screen he is almost always talking to, or sitting with Trigger. The obvious explanation is that this is convenient for the script and the staging. But, looking at it within the context of the show, it seems odd that Boycie should choose to spend so much time with Trigger, if he does not like him. It could be argued that, Boycie being Boycie, he likes to have someone around who he can feel superior too. He does like to try and make Trigger feel small. Honestly, though, I’m starting to think that Boycie hangs around with Trigger so much, because Trigger is the only one who actually treats him like a friend. I think Boycie knows that all of his so-called friendships are based on favours, and none of his friends actually like him. Trigger may not even like him, but at least Boycie is sure he is his friend, and that this does not depend on what he can give him.

I feel like Boycie got almost zero affection from his parents growing up. Like, his mother hugged him once, or twice when he hurt himself, but quickly shooed him away, like, “That’s enough now, off you go.” And Boycie’s dad was a cold bastard, we all know this. The only contact Boycie was really familiar with, was the hard knocks of contact sports, or corporal punishment. As a result, before he was married to Marlene, Boycie had no idea how to give, or receive physical affection. It would have been funny how awkward he was, if it wasn’t so sad to watch. Like, on one occasion, Trigger gave Boycie a light and leaned in to light his own cigarette at the same time, brushing his forehead against Boycie’s. It made Boycie spit out his cigarette. Boycie first got to go steady with Marlene on talk alone, but she was shocked by how stiff and jumpy he was in response to her taking his hand, or hugging him goodnight. In the early, happy days of their relationship, Marlene spent a lot of time getting Boycie used to loving touches.

You know that tweet, where the poster said she had a crush on a girl in her class, but didn’t know how to deal with it, so she sent her a letter saying “Get out of my school.” I feel like Boycie absolutely sent Trigger a letter like that when they were young, in a fit of bi panic. Trig got a bit worried and showed the letter to Del, who recognised Boycie’s handwriting and immediately assumed this was just another way to bully Trigger. Boycie’s little crush got him clout round the ear hole.

I feel like, when the gang were younger, Del would always use Trigger as his personal ladder. Like, when he needed to reach something, climb something, see something far away? Trigger ladder. He could have used Boycie, who was as tall as Trigger, but he just would have dropped Del, deliberately.

My one positive headcanon for Boycie, is that he’s one of those people who pretends to hate his wife’s dog, but talks to it and fusses over it in secret.

Boycie: Before I married you, you used to show some sympathy whenever I had a nightmare. You used to mop my brow.
Marlene: I used to wipe your face with a sheet, it’s not quite the same thing.

Boycie: He offered! You know what he’s like when he smells a free pizza.
