Teach kids to spread love, not hate.
For reasons not fully understood, humanity still has not figured out how to live peacefully. People hurt others for reasons we will never understand or hate others who are different from what they consider "normal" or "moral". And, sadly this is a reality that our children will have to face.
My daughter, for example, cannot wrap her head around why people have so much hate for others or why they would hurt an animal. She gets a lot of that from me. From hate for a religion to hate for people of the lgbtqia community. It doesn't make sense to us.
My son is a little tougher but still gets emotional when he sees anyone being racist or hurting an animal for any reason. He has a hard time understanding hate as well.
My children have big hearts and this makes them beautiful, powerful, open human beings that will have the power to change the world. My natural inclination is to protect them so we don't allow things like the news in our home. But if they find out from other kids about the horrible people in the world and the things they do, I cannot hide it from them. I have to answer the questions as best I can.
But the big question I cannot answer is, "Why do people hurt others?". Well, I can't answer that. It really depends on the human being themselves and even they don't have a good reason other than hatred that doesn't make sense. But as parents, we do have to prepare our children for the horrors of the world.
They are the ones we are setting up to face a world wherein humans can’t live safely because of whom they have fallen in love with.
They are the ones who have to face people who don't allow others to be themselves because of messed up "morals" or pure hatred.
They are the ones who have to face a world where people hate a religion that isn't their own or hate people without a religion.
They are the ones who will live in communities where violence against others will be carried out without respect or regard for human life.
They are the ones who will witness atrocities of this nature time and time and time again.
As parents, we want them prepared for that future. We want them to be part of the solution. We want them to know that their parents don't only preach equality and love and kindness towards all people, but we fight for it.
We want them to grow up being proud of who they are; no matter who that may be. They need to know that helping is possible, and that fear isn't a way to love. We want them to know that they need to be strong and that staying quiet or hating yourself or others is wrong. They need to know that morals are mostly subjective, not objective. Only a few things can be considered objective.
So we sit and we talk. If they have questions, we answer. If they want to talk about their feelings, we listen. We talk. Staying open with our kids and teaching them love, not hate, is the best thing we can do for them.
Our motto as parents: "You do whatever you want in your life that makes you happy. As long as you aren't a serial killer, we are fine with however you want to live. We only care about your happiness."

Teaching my kids about finances.
It's never too early to start teaching children about money and finances. These are important skills for when they enter adulthood. Depending on how old your kids are, you will have to approach money and budgeting accordingly.
You can teach them what not to do, or how you’ve made mistakes, etc. But the first step in teaching your own kids, is to get your own stuff together. I wasn't taught this skill as a child and had to figure it out as an adult. I have a budget binder that I keep and I keep track of every financial decision, bills, budgets, etc.
The main things I want my kids to know are:
• Wants vs. needs
• Money basics- denominations, value, and counting
• Learning how to track money
• How to save money
• How to be generous with money
• How to budget
• Credit cards, debit cards and credit reports
To make things easy for kids to understand, here are my suggestions on what to explain and how to break things down:
Wants vs needs: Have them make a list of all the things they want. Once they have made their list, help them to prioritize their items by placing a star next to the items that they need. This will help them to see that some of the things they want are actually needs.
Money basics: You can introduce the concept of counting money once your child has a basic understanding of simple math. You will then move on to helping them identify different types of currency and their value, and fun counting games can help you do this. Before introducing money into your child's lesson, teach them how to skip-count.
Track money: Sit down with a pen and paper and have them write down each finance and see where money goes and how much is left. When they receive their allowance, 80% goes to spending, 10% to saving and 10% to giving. When they spend money, they deduct it from their spending balance.
How to save money: Once a child gets money, usually they want to spend it right away. One way kids can set a goal is to define a portion of their income they want to save (such as 10%) or a portion of their income they want to give to others. A young child can simply put money in their savings account or savings jar with the goal of purchasing a new toy or going to the movies when they’ve reached a certain goal amount.
How to be generous with money: Avoid entitlement. While I’m grateful to live in a place and time that my kids can even feel entitled, it’s a constant battle to teach them gratitude. There are always others to help and those opportunities are the most apparent right now. Whether it’s sending money to a charitable organization, buying a gift for a friend, or purchasing items to directly give to a community cause, kids will be able to learn what it feels like to use their money to help others in need. Involve them in charitable causes that you are already contribute to. There is unlimited need in the world and there are unlimited ways to help kids learn to give.
Budget: You can give examples of what that means your family without giving specifics of your income/expenses. Explain that budgets can be for a week, a month, a year and why it’s important to have a plan with money. Help them see exactly how their money is coming in and where it's going.
Credit cards, debit cards, and credit reports: It’s important that kids understand the difference between a debit card and a credit card. Explain that money spent using a debit card comes directly out of their bank account, and they must keep track of how much money is available in the account. Money spent using a credit card is borrowing someone else’s money, and it must be paid back with interest. Explain that having a credit card can be helpful, but that maxing it out isn't the best strategy for a good financial future. Explain how it's best to keep the card’s balance well below the limit and to pay off debts as quickly as possible. When you talk to your child about credit, you can help them understand that their credit score works like a grade that shows how much effort they put into good study habits. With these good habits they can buy a car, a house, etc.
There are also a ton of videos for kids on YouTube about how to do all of these things that can explain it well. I like to incorporate these videos into the morning education time so that they can learn and it will make it easier on me when I sit down with them to teach them further when it's called for.
With all of this comes the acts that can help your child learn these. I have weekly allowance and they have their own debit cards. Greenlight was my option for this. They each got a card. Each chore is worth .25 at the moment and 4 chores gets them a $1.00. Homework is worth $1.00 due to it being difficult at times and I believe that education needs to be focused on.
They of course have their savings and the things they want to spend it on as explained before. If they are low on the amount they need for an item they are saving up for, they will offer to do extra chores to get to the purchase faster. This teaches them great work ethic.
Money is such a great tool that can be used in our families to build secure, content and less stressful lives. Modeling good financial habits for our kids and proactively teaching them through daily experiences can benefit generations.
I will leave a guideline that I have used.

Five Little Penguins Book review
Five Little Penguins Book review
I was lucky to get a sneak preview of this book on book reading website I am currently listed on and yes, I realise that it for smaller children, but I have fallen in love with it. From the second I saw the drawings to the Christmas themed story. it is a truly magical and beautiful book. I thought the repeating words in it were delightful and caring and smaller children will be able to join in…

Ava and I participated in our first Cook the Book Cookbook Club at @farmingtonpubliclibraryar last night. Everyone made a different recipe from the monthly featured cookbook and then we brought them in to share together and discuss at the library. We made Fall Crostini with brie and orange marmalade, and Ashton and Stella even got to join us! It was so nice to meet new people and we can't wait for the next meeting! 💕 #libraryfun #foodie #cookbookclub #farmingtonar #crostini #easyrecipe #momandme #librarylove #teachthemyoung (at Farmington Public Library) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoaePWfuMDi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
