By MY sacrifice, our town is made safe.
[ID: A digital painting of Roswell from The Adventure Zone, set in a canyon-like setting on a sunny day.
Roswell is a vermilion flycatcher in adult male plumage: a small, bright red songbird with a dark gray mask that extends all the way to their nape, back, wings and tail. They have a silver band around one of their ankles, which has a “spur” on it: a coin with a silver star.
They are perched upon one of the branches of a young tree with a twisting gray trunk and bright greenery. That tree is planted within Roswell’s now lifeless armor, which is shown in a state of partial destruction. There are many holes blasted into its cuirass and lion-like helmet, and the remaining clay of their arm has been baked. Nonetheless, the flycatcher stands almost triumphant, with their crown of red feathers raised. End description.]

@taznovembercelebration - Cloak / Reveal
Okay. Well. The inside of the bubble wasn't as bad as Magnus thought it was going to be. He had been expecting maybe like, some pits of lava, or a really, really angry bear who liked to drink out of the Temporal Chalice like a fancy king. Instead, there was a quiet little town nestled inside of it. At the entrance stood a wide gate and, in front of that gate, stood a figure. They were bigger than he was, which was saying a lot, because Magnus was a pretty big boy. The armor keeping them together was rusty, but still had some of its signature shine, though the shine was very much hidden by the red clay seeping out from inside. On the shoulder, a little red bird sat, tilting their head curiously at Magnus, Merle, and Taako.
They shared a glance.
"I got this," Magnus said. "Y'know, I'm pretty rusticly hospitab-"
"Oh!" said the bird. "It's you!"
"It's me!" Magnus said, laying down the charm. "Y'know, friend, you're the second person who has said that to us today!"
"You're back!" the bird said, completely ignoring what Magnus had said. He tried not to feel too hurt about it. Part of being rusticly hospitable was not feeling hurt about a lot of things. The bird seemed to come to their senses after a few seconds, shaking their little head. "Who are your friends?"
"This is Taako-"
"From TV," Taako put it.
"From TV, yeah," Magnus said. "And this is Merle. And I'm Magnus. Burnsides. Magnus Burnsides."
"Magnus Burnsides," the bird said, as if they were trying Magnus's name out. "I like it."
"Thank you!" Next to him, Merle rolled his eyes. Magnus nudged him with his foot, coughing slightly. "Listen, uh, Harvey Birdman-"
"I'm- I'm not a bird?"
"We sort of, uhhhh, are looking for something. Would you happen to have like, a lost and found-" Taako let out a little snerk of laughter next to him. "Or maybe like, a place where you keep magical artifacts? That'd be super helpful."
"I mean…" the bird moved a little on the shoulder of their bigger figure. "We have a lost and found in the Sheriff's Office- you know Sheriff Isaak, of course."
"Of course, of course," Magnus said, trying to remember who the hell Sheriff Isaak was. Did he even know any Sheriffs? There was that one from Raven's Roost- but no, her name hadn't been Isaak. At least, not that Magnus knew.
"But it really depends on what you're looking for, I suppose!" the bird said. "And- and what are you looking for exactly? So I can help you find it?"
"Well," Magnus said, glancing at Taako.
"Cup," Taako said.
"A… cup?" the bird said. "Are you thirsty? Y'know, we have a nice little saloon here in town that I'm sure would love to ser-"
"No, like a- a fancy cup," Taako said.
"Almost magical, one might say!" Merle said.
"Yeah, yeah," Taako said. "Like…" The Director had never described the Chalice to them and it was obvious that Taako had now realized this. He foundered for a second and settled on saying, "Like a cup" again.
"And you're- hm." The bird paused, and their form seem to survey Taako and Merle skeptically. After a moment, one of the iron-clad hands lifted and gestured in a "come here" motion. The bird said, "Magnus, could I talk to you for a moment?"
"Uhm," he looked towards Taako and Merle again. Merle shrugged. "I mean, anything you can say to me, you can say to my friends."
"Well, I mean," they seemed to debate this to themselves for a second. "Okay, yeah. Magnus, do you trust these men? I mean, I trust you, but I- I don't know these guys from Adam! They could be here to- to disrupt, or rob the bank, or something like that! I don't- why should I trust them?"
"Why do you trust Magnus, then?" Merle said. The bird, somehow, looked disapprovingly at him. Magnus, once again, kicked Merle. Gently. But Merle still yelped like he had been punted across a football field. "Hey! I'm just askin'!"
"Well, 'cus he's- he's the Guy! The statue guy!"
"Yeah, Merle," Magnus said. "I'm the statue guy." And before Merle could respond (because they really didn't have the time for that), he continued. "I trust these two with my life, bird friend. I promise they aren't here to disrupt anyone or rob any bank. We're just looking for that cup that we mentioned."
"Chalice," Merle said.
"Chalice, yes," Magnus said.
"Hm," the bird said again. "Well, uhm, first off, again, I'm not a bird. And secondly… if you trust them, then I think they'll be fine. But I don't want the two of you wanderin' off too far, you hear me? Stay close to me or- or my pal Magnus here and you'll be just fine."
"Yeah, of course," Taako said. Magnus didn't even have to look at him to know Taako wasn't going to follow that rule.
"Gotcha," Merle said.
"Well then, I think we're good to go!" the bird (???) said. "If y'all will follow me, I can take you to the Sheriff's Office and we can start looking for that cup- sorry, Chalice."
The armor clanked as the figure turned around, going further into town. Magnus let Merle and Taako go in front of him, just to show that they were listening, at least. Through the gate, they came towards the sides of a few buildings before it split into an open town square. This entire town was so charming and made Magnus really wish he had brought a cowboy hat along with him. There was the saloon the figure had mentioned, and the bank, and-
"Hey," Magnus said, stumbling back a bit after he had run directly into Taako's back. "What gives?"
"Uh," Merle said. The figure paused when it heard them talking, and turned around. "Mags, take a look at that statue over there, will ya?"
Magnus followed where Merle was pointing and-
"Oh," he said.
It- well, it certainly was him on the statue. Or, at the very least, someone who looked incredibly like him. The same scar down his face, the same shape of his jaw, and the same build of his body. Except that the Magnus there was hidden under a cloak, and the metal had oxidized over time to a bright, red color. Like the bad guys. The red-robed Magnus had his hand on the shoulder of two figures in front of him, a tall man and a little girl.
"Oh!" the not-bird said, clanking back over them. "I see you found the statue! What'd'you- what'd'you think of it? Pretty cool, right?"
"It's, uh, pretty radical," Taako said.
"Very… finely made," Merle said with an uncomfortable chuckle. "Were you gonna show us to the Sheriff's Office, oooor?"
"Magnus?" the not-bird cheeped. "What'd'you think? Did we- is it okay? Do you like it?"
"Oh, uhm." Magnus coughed, looking away. A headache was starting to form behind his eyes. He had a statue. The statue of him had a red robe on. Red robes were the bad guys. There was… something there but his brain wasn't- this wasn't working. Magnus blinked a few times to clear his eyes. "It's very, uh, red! Is it supposed to be like that, or-"
"Well, yeah," not-bird said. "Sheriff Isaak specifically requested that metal so it'd fade that way over time! He's so smart."
"Sounds like he is," Magnus said. It felt like there was something stuck in his throat when he swallowed. "Anyway, uh- Sheriff's Office! Not-bird friend, is Sheriff, uh, Isaak in today, or nah?"
Not-bird chattered on and they continued their walk towards the office. More than a few people stopped to look at them as they passed. Merle took his chance to nudge his arm as not-bird talked, sending a concerned look his way.
"You good?" Merle whispered. Taako glanced back at them, his eyebrows raised.
"I'm- I'm good," Magnus said. "Let's go find the Chalice."

Candlenights is here!!!! @thecandlenightszone
Happy Candlenights @beeftrice! I had a lot of fun writing this, Roswell is severely underappreciated. Fic title is from the song 'Landline' by The Phoenix Foundation.
I want to hear something new ringing in my ears
(ao3 link)
When Roswell’s abode was obliterated by the Hunger when it came crashing down, Paloma took up the task of making them a new home with a little help from Magnus. Due to their kindness Roswell had a lovely bird-sized home filled with linen and cotton and wool bedding, with easily accessed nooks for them to keep all their sheriff items and other possessions. If Roswell could cry they probably would have when they were presented with the house, which stands near the roof of the sheriff's department, and when they woke up every morning they always looked at their home with a sense of pride.
It was hot when they woke up, as it usually was, so after refreshing themselves in the bath that sits outside their home they flew over to Ren’s place to see how she was doing. Roswell’s duties as Sheriff didn’t consist of much at the moment, and to make up for the lack of work they liked to check in on people in the town and make sure they were all doing okay. The town wasn’t in a bad spot, but people were starting to get bored, and that could often lead to trouble. All in all, they could rely on Ren to lend an ear and it was always nice to drop in and see a friend.
Ren was just opening the Davy Lamp when they flew up and landed on the railing.
“How are you doing today, Ren?” they asked, settling down a little. Ren picked her broom off its hook and smiled.
“As well as ever, Roswell. And yourself?”
“Pretty good. Anything interesting going on today, or just the usual?”
She chuckled. “A little more than usual today. Taako called me late last night, he’s coming over today to introduce me to Lup. I think he’s pretty excited, and I’d expect Paloma to make an appearance too. Y’know how she loves having someone around who will actually critique her baking.” Ren finished her sweeping and went back inside, gesturing for Roswell to follow her. “Come on in, I’ll give you some strawberry water.”
Roswell blustered a little. “Oh, there’s no need for that-”
“Come on, Roswell. It’s hot, and I know for a fact you don’t have much to do at the moment. Ten minutes won’t hurt ya.”
Ren had only just placed a cup down for Roswell when the door was flung open by a very animated Taako followed by a woman that could only be Lup, with how similar they looked. Surprisingly, their colourful entourage was followed up by one Magnus Burnsides, who waved sheepishly after the twins’ dramatic entrance.
“Ren! How are you, how’s the town? Holy shit, I need to tell you about this new recipe-” Taako started, and then the two of them were off, somehow switching in and out of Elvish as they talked.
Roswell laughed and shook their head, turning to Magnus who had taken a seat next to them.
“Roswell! It’s great to see you again, Refuge looks good!”
“Magnus, how have you been? What brings you to Refuge? I thought you’d be all busy rebuilding after the world almost ended.” Roswell asked.
Magnus shrugged. “It’s been a couple of months, and Taako wanted to introduce Lup to Ren and Paloma. When he mentioned that Kravitz, his partner, was giving them a ride to Refuge I asked if I could tag along and see if I could help out with anything.”
“Well that’s very kind of you, but Refuge suffered pretty little against the Hunger. I think Istus might have turned a kind eye on us, so as much as your help is appreciated there isn’t actually that much to do.” Roswell said, tilting their head when Magnus deflated a little.
“Is there really nothing to do? Even small jobs, I don’t suppose anyone has rebroken the chairs in your office?”
“No, they’re still intact.” Roswell tittered. “If you asked around I’m sure people would have a few little things, but nothing huge.”
Magnus sighed and sat back a little, watching Taako rope Lup into the cooking conversation and subsequently getting her and Ren chatting.  He sighed. “I feel terrible about what you all went through there. I wanted to truly, deeply apologise for the damage that my relic caused you. I know what death is like far too well, and I hate that you were all caught up in that loop because of me.”
Roswell was silent for a moment, not quite sure how to respond. “Magnus, I understand where you’re coming from. The cup did a lot of damage to the people here, there’s no denying that. But I think you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone in this town who blames you for it. They remember you for you, as you were when you brought Jack and June to this town and as you were when you saved us from the cup. There will be a few who choose to hold onto anger and blame, but you can’t carry all of that on your shoulders all the time. No one could.”
Magnus turned away from the house fire that was the twins and Ren and gave Roswell a small smile.
“Thanks, Roswell. That means a lot.” Magnus took a breath and stood again, still a little downtrodden, but with a new conviction. “I remember Lup wanted to meet you, if you’re up for that?”
“I’d love to.”
The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up and of course meeting Lup, all the while snacking on treats that Paloma had brought up from her cottage when she appeared out of nowhere. It was a rush of activity after weeks of pottering along, and Roswell was glad of it. It was good to get some vigour back in the town, however small.
When Kravitz (Roswell had heard enough about him at this point to be able to pick the man out by sight) cut a portal in the courtyard to come and pick the trio up, they were sad to see them go.
“Magnus!” They called out before he went through the portal. “Come and visit again soon. Bring the whole crew, liven the place up. We all miss you guys.”
Magnus laughed. “Of course! Be well, Roswell.”
“You too, Magnus.”
And with another day gone, Roswell said goodbye to Ren and Paloma and flew back to their house, getting comfortable in their nest. All up until they went to sleep, they could only think  about all the new ideas they had to bring a little life back into Refuge.

LUUUUP MY BELOVED
I know I said Davenport and Lucretia were my favorite but cmon, Lup is just such a banger character. She's a wizard, she's canonically trans, she's the heart of the IRPE, she was stuck in an umbrella for ten years, she's dating just some guy, and she's a litch?! Character of all time.
ID by @anistarrose under the cut
[Image description: several digital drawings of Lup from The Adventure Zone. She's an elf with a medium build, freckled light brown skin, and a curly blond bob cut with dark roots, as well as a tufted tail.
In the first image, she wears a tank top with her robe tied around her waist, and fiery orange makeup around her eyes. She's posing with the Umbra Staff, smiling.
Second: Lup is grinning and lifting Barry into the air as he blushes and rubs his neck. He's a chubby human with slicked back brown hair, a gray streak, and stubble, wearing his robe and jeans.
Third: Lup fires a beam of red magic from the Umbra Staff, with the force of it blowing back her hair.
Fourth: a simple doodle of Lup in a t-shirt reading: "I survived the hunger for 100 years and all I got was this shirt."
Last: Lup as a lich, with a skeletal form and with fiery hair floating up from her skull. She has a surprised expression, and she's holding the Umbra Staff. End description.]

Just realized that the statement “By their sacrifice, our town is made safe” is true but not in the way that it’s presented.
Roswell basically half-killed themselves in the podcast while giving the boys enough time to pop the bubble around Refuge, and in the graphic novel it’s hinted that their death lasted beyond that of the clay body, as the bird can (presumably?) no longer speak. And let’s not forget that quote: “Taako, tell me that I made Refuge safe!” They killed the very source of their strength to make sure that their town would stay safe.
The sacrifice was not Jack’s and June’s.
It was Roswell’s.

Celebrating the release of the Adventure Zone: Eleventh Hour graphic novel (my favorite arc from Balance) with the release of a platform fighter moveset for Roswell (one of my favorite Balance NPCs)!
Roswell is, until further notice, THE heaviest character on the roster. They're heavy, slow, and gosh darn do they pack a punch.
Roswell's down special initiates a time loop. A clock appears where this move is initiated and begins ticking, and in the meantime Roswell can go do whatever they want. After a few moments, or when the move is used again, Roswell will explode and reappear where the clock was.
Roswell's neutral special has them start charging up a huge punch that springs forth from their midsection. You can also save the charge to be used later.
Roswell's side special has them hop aboard a minecart that goes rushing forward. After the initial rush, the minecart essentially turns into a moving platform that Roswell (and other fighters) can jump in or out of and attack from, until it eventually stops and disappears.
Hold the button for Roswell's up special to position the bird. Once released, Roswell's top half snaps to the bird, and after a moment their bottom half follows. Both halves do damage while moving, and most foes and projectiles can't pass through Roswell while they are stretched.
Roswell's finale calls upon the gargantuan might of the Purple Worm. The worm emerges behind Roswell, where the player assumes control of it for a brief time, allowing you to shoot fireballs and lunge at foes.
