PLANTS database and Flora of North America call the species Agnorhiza elata . Hall's mule ears grows in a narrow band from Tuolumne County to Fresno County with a few plants found in Tulare County. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

It is also listed by the State of California as Rare. The are fewer than 20 occurrences in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The insect is a western cucumber beetle. Farmers can only wish that this beetle was rare for it is a major pest of agricultural crops (although not much of one in the Bot Garden.)
