When Tammy and Bird Person got married, he was in his traditional Bird People wedding garb and Tammy just had a regular wedding dress on.

Who is Tammy?

Not too long ago, I wanted to make a speculation post about Tammy Guterman, a side character in Rick and Morty that was revealed to be a villain. Ever since season two’s finale, I’ve been wondering who Tammy really is. What we know so far that she’s actually a Galactic Federation agent deep undercover as a high school teenager and one of Summer’s friends. She does so as she hooks up with Birdperson in “Ricksy Business” as their relationship blossomed throughout season two, only for her to betray her fiancé later on during their wedding in “The Wedding Squancers”.

I was kind of hoping for an explanation of who she really was by the third season premiere. I had numerous ideas of her backstory, like if she was a gromflomite GF agent who was transmogrified into a human teenage girl, or if she was a shapeshifting android who was sent to Earth to spy on Rick Sanchez, and that she also killed off and replaced the real Tammy Guterman. I then had another idea that she was a human GF agent who was born and raised outside of Earth. I mean, it’s not like there weren’t any other human characters outside out earth (see also: Vance Maximus, Alan Rails, Lady Katana).

By the time “The Rickshank Redemption” rolled in, Tammy only appeared in the post-credits scene, where she readies Phoenixperson as they then set off into outer space. We never get to see her early in the episode, neither in the middle of the episode. So far, we know very little about her other than being a high-ranking agent of the Galactic Federation, even though she served as a major antagonist in “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri”, keyword: “major”. Soon enough in the second half of the episode, she was killed off like she was nothing, and we never get to know anything about her.

“She died the way she lived: overserialized.”

This is most likely a jab at Rick and Morty fans who demanded serialization in the show. I get that it is Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s show (mostly Dan Harmon’s at this point), and they are free to do whatever they want with the show however they please, but I feel like that was kind of a let down in term of the show’s serialization, especially with how Rick toppled the GF and Council of Ricks within the entirety of “The Rickshank Redemption”. Maybe Tammy is just too good for this show at this point. She did reappear again in “Rickternal Friendshine of the Endless Mort”, albeit as both a representation of what she really is (a ruthless GF agent) and what Birdperson imagined her to be (a loving, caring wife).

I think that’s all I got for Tammy Guterman, and probably all I got for an analysis on Rick and Morty at this point, due to the show’s constant inconsistencies. I like to laugh at the show every once in a while, but I can’t help but to not ignore it going down the drain. Season six managed to redeem it a little with the serialization (i.e. the Prime Rick arc), but I’m afraid the staff has to do a lot more to gain back their viewer base, like dumbing down on the meta humor and incest jokes.

Or maybe look for a replacement for Rick and Morty’s voice actor just in case that Justin is found guilty for a domestic abuse case in 2020.

What are your theories on what Tammy was? I mean she looks very human and acts human but she doesn’t seem to be from earth and it’s implied she’s not actually Summer’s age.

I think Tammy's very interesting because she seems humanoid (one of the only "aliens" we've seen in the show that does, maybe except for the people that Unity had control of but even then we could tell that they weren't human so ??) and the parents that we meet are clearly androids so if anything I might lean towards Tammy being the same but who knows ???
