Apt Li-Xiang La (Xiang Ji Beef Noodle), 411 E Huntington Dr, Ste 101D, Arcadia, CA 91006
Tumblr media
The sign says Xiang Ji but their website says Apt Li-Xiang. I’m confused. Anyway, it’s a casual Taiwanese restaurant that serves beef noodle soup, noodle soups, cold appetizers, dumplings, and stinky tofu.
#3 Braised half tendon, half meat (shank) beef noodles ($15.99) served with green onion, cilantro, pickled vegetables. The broth was dark, slightly sweet with a hint of tomatoes, spicy, garlicky, and beefy. Complex and so flavorful. There were about three big pieces of soft tendon and huge pieces of tender simmered shank. The noodles were flat and medium width wheat noodles. They were soft without much chew. Everything was soft and tender. The serving was generous. Best Taiwanese beef noodle soup that I’ve had in years.
Service was friendly. The interior looked clean and newly remodeled. They have a huge walk-in freezer on the left. Towards the door, there’s a little condiment station.

Bubble Tea
Catching up with loved ones and listening to our favorite music while we chewed on our tapioca pearls. Much has changed since I was first introduced to bubble tea, but my love for bubble tea has not. The traditional milk tea is my favorite. The sweet, creamy beverage of strong tea, milk and those addictive tapioca pearls is something I crave so frequently. Have you got a favorite flavor of bubble tea?

Hanlin Tea Room, 56 E Duarte Rd, Arcadia, CA 91006
Tumblr media
Hanlin Tea Room started in Taiwan in 1986. They claim to have invented boba milk tea! They’re known for quality Taiwanese tea and their Taiwanese food. While “tea room” makes me think of afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, this tea room serves boba milk tea, Taiwanese snacks, and Taiwanese meals.
The menu was available by scanning the QR code at the table. They have milk tea, tea latte, iced tea, honey tea, slushy, coffee, dessert (e.g., grass jelly), rice plates (lamb chop, pork chop, chicken leg, Taiwanese sausage), noodle (e.g., beef noodle soup, garlic noodle), hot pot, and snacks (e.g., tofu, rice cake, oyster omelette).
Popcorn chicken rice ($13.95): This came on a huge white plate. Lots of food! The steamed rice was topped with minced pork and a thin sweet soy sauce that permeated the rice (wish the sauce wasn’t so thin). The popcorn chicken was really good but a touch too salty – lots of fried basil, a few whole garlic cloves, crunchy thin batter, big juicy pieces, five spice flavor. The stir fried cabbage was naturally sweet and still al dente/crunchy. The tofu triangle was braised but lacking a bit in flavor. The pu-erh tea egg didn’t have enough tea flavor though it did have some tea flavor. My grandma used to make tea eggs all the time and hers had much more flavor. Theirs didn’t seem like it had been marinated long enough. Overall, a tasty comforting meal. For Taiwanese rice plates, there are better places (e.g., Half & Half Good Old Time, Yi Mei). For milk tea, there are better places too. However, it is hard to find a place with good milk tea and good Taiwanese food.
Pu-erh milk tea ($5.50 + $0.50 for boba, 0% sugar, less ice): this took longer than the food to arrive for some reason. The tea drinks are shaken by hand. The tea was good (not too sweet, not too creamy) but the pu-erh flavor wasn’t strong. The boba/tapioca pearls were bouncy and fresh.
The complex has its own parking structure. The interior looked nice and modern with a chalkboard menu, open kitchen, some counter seating, hanging lights, etc. It had an upscale feel. They played Chinese pop songs. I noticed the hot pots were popular.

This is a vegan restaurant 🍃🍴 owned by a Taiwanese woman. I didn't notice it at first, but when I saw the traditional Taiwanese bags on the wall, I started to think...is the owner of this restaurant Taiwanese? Or do they like Taiwan a lot?
Tumblr media
I communicated in English until I asked them at the checkout, "Are you Taiwanese? The chef replied, "My mother is Taiwanese. He speaks Japanese, Mandarin, and some Taiwanese and English.

FAT FOOK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Supposedly we're gonna try the newly open Din Tai Fung in the north but unfortunately the lines were unbearable. But there are plenty restaurants around that I thought maybe worth a try, and we ended up here (this was on my list).
The interior and space was impressive (I dunno why I said that like I hang out with Architects peeps lol), kinda attracts customers so kudos to whoever puts the effort for the design. The servers and staff were friendly and accomodating. I guess the waiting time took much longer than expected but as a normal people, we waited patiently.
This is a taiwanese street food / restaurant based on my research 😅 I haven't tried any of their meals before nor my parents, so this is new to us. Hate to say the truth but, we enjoyed the meal more on Tim Ho Wan than Fat Fook. I don't know if it was the umami that's lacking, or we're not that starving (it's 12 pm already) but also my mama said she liked the first resto we've been to. To be fair, the prices were insanely absurd because it's so affordable. and their serving were very generous that we almost didn't finish. But for the taste, it was just so-so. I tried their chocolate milk tea and definitely good but after hours I felt my tummy lurking 😅. I was also hoping that their Xiao Long Bao has that soft cover and more soup inside, but i guess they have to improve on that. It was our first time and I just said to myself that it tastes like our homemade siomai with a little soup broth. Their famous chicken chops, the breading has a different sour at first taste, then after 2nd bite fades but I can't explain really. It was good but not that special for me. I also compared the sweet and sour pork to David's, I like that better huhu. Mama said she will cook sweet and sour pork at home soon (competitive at its finest).
Over all, maybe I'll rate it 7/10.
Until our next food trip!
