Sometimes you give a character a nickname and then every time you say their full first name after that it feels too formal lol

Ok so I’m not 100% sure how well this worked but I like the beginning and the end so
[Three dead things enter an inn. Not all at once, mind you, but they enter nonetheless.
Something angelic and frayed sits at a table near a wall. The twisted, damned remains of a titan lay across a seat as a sword. And a corpse closes his eyes as the bell on the door sounds his arrival.
He’s rotting.
Synaelia is almost surprised at how little he smells, given the state he seems to be in, but… she’s sure there are stranger things in this world.
He’s still standing in the doorway when she looks up for a second time. Her palms itch as she wonders what he’s doing, but… she’d rather lean to the side of kindness. If she’s got the time to choose. So she stands, and reaches to hold the door open the rest of the way for him, and he flinches.
She tries not to pay attention to the state he’s in.
It’s difficult to ignore how his flesh hangs off his bones in places.
He’s still standing there when somebody else reaches the door, and… they give her a look. And she sighs. Puts a hand on his shoulder to guide him anywhere else, and it takes him a second to react.
They’ve reached her table by the time he shoves her hand off of him, and she’s taking a breath to ask if he needs help when he speaks up.
“I’ll fucking bite you if you do that again.”
She blinks. The words don’t have much bite to them, but… it’s not a threat she’s gotten often.
“…Great plan. Sure I’m gonna taste like a whole lot more than bad. Sit down, why don’t you.”
She finds herself a little surprised when he does just that, even if he’s grumbling curses as he does so.
“You look like shit.”
The sword pipes up from its own chair, just about as helpful as it ever is when it comes to talking to people, and she rolls her eyes.
The man huffs and looks up, but… doesn’t seem as surprised as Syn had first been to find what’s talking.
“My apologies if I don’t… leap at every opportunity to eat someone just for the sake of vanity. Decay doesn’t exactly feel great for me, either.”
He’s glaring at the sword, and Syn opens her mouth, but he’s not done.
“And I’m sorry, but I’ve not really outgrown my hesitation to just fucking… eat my fellow man. I’m sure I will, if I last that long, but I’m also kind of not sure I was meant to last very long, like this? Which… kind of fucked up, if you ask me. But I’m stuck here, now, so I’ve got to carry my shit and get over it.”
He sucks in a breath, and it sounds painful, how it rattles in his chest.
“And it might be easier if I could do more than just beat someone to death, but like… the fuck am I gonna use? The bow I can’t draw, or the sword I can’t pick up? Like, shit’s fancy as hell and enchanted and shit, but it doesn’t do me any fucking good, does it? …Not like I took the sword with me, anyways, even if it’s more mine than hers. Like, a blade can only get personal with your ribs so many times before you’ve got a claim to it, right? But I wanted her to have something of his, and the damned thing was so fucking important to her anyway, and it didn’t seem worth the trouble, and…”
As he goes on, Synaelia feels more and more like she shouldn’t be listening to this. Like she’s eavesdropping. And she’s sure the sword is having the time of its life, as he gets louder. He’s not quite shouting, but he is near enough to it to draw eyes.
The next time he has to stop to heave in a breath, the sword speaks again.
“…So you’re a zombie, right? Why not just… go all out? Like yeah, guilt or whatever, but… they’re gonna die anyways.”
Synaelia can feel the hum of the voice as she picks it up, and she gives it about the harshest look she can, given that it’s… a sword.
“Shut up.”
It’s not terribly likely to, of course, but she still tries. And she gives the rotten man an apologetic look.
For a moment, she lingers there, halfway standing, as she tries to find some words that might help. But… she’s not sure of how much help she could be, even if she stayed.
If she waited a little longer, she’d find something familiar, in the way he buries his face in his arms, or maybe he’d recognize something in the way the color in her eyes dances between shades.
Outside an inn, a truck rumbles to life. There are holes in the passenger seat from a stone blade carelessly tossed against the leather, and the engine hums like the infernal plane.]

Random facts or childhood (or adulthood) story for whichever character(s) is/are on your mind?
Or random facts about elysur?
Sean used to just like. Climb straight up things as a kid that he very shouldn’t have. And Ves didn’t realize that this wasn’t a regular casual thing for a human child to do. The boy has broken a few bones, and that process was how he realized that he could push his injuries off on something else, and if it’s already dead, it won’t mind. He also got pretty good at climbing, so when Larry showed up and saw him just… climbing onto the roof of a multiple story building, there wasn’t a whole ton he could do until he convinced Ves that it’s dangerous.
Sean goes back there, when he can, because it’s familiar, and he can see the original hole in reality from that roof, in the distance.
There used to be a dead magic zone there, over several blocks, until the source was lost. It was gone by the time they moved in, because Ves avoids those things like the plague, and they ended up sticking around when they found Syn.

Fuck it giving some OCs some more scars.
Lucky has a scar on the left side of her jaw from tripping on some stairs and catching the cement and the scrape healed wonky
Synaelia has a bunch of little scars on her hands from playing with knives to try and look cool
Azure has a scar on his right cheek, long faded, from roughhousing when he was younger. Dragons and claws and such
Winn has one on her right hand from being a little too friendly with the wildlife and getting bit, and it had already long healed on its own by the time she told her aunts
Bo has a burn on her ribs from getting too careless playing with fire
Viniri has a scar on one foot from dropping a crate while helping their parents move

["You said you were alive, before all of this, right? Like, you had a body?"
"I did. What do you want to know?"
"Well, what did you look like?"
It goes silent for a long time, and when it speaks up again, its voice is quieter than she had expected.
"I had... arms. Eyes. Horns, I think..."]

I wanna hear the specific side effects for entities you've already thought about. Gimmegimmegimmegimmegimme
I’m making heart eyes at you, and I’m putting these under a cut Bc they can get a lil gruesome so like. Just in case.
So! A lot of the damage is tied to like, the theme hey get. But either way,
Starting with the demon cats,
Jamson has a very smoke-related theme, so when she possesses someone, they can’t breathe as deep. And she doesn’t usually possess people, much less use her own powers while doing so, but if she did, they’d start breathing smoke. Which looks cool but isn’t great for like. The body. Beyond that, she doesn’t really possess people very actively, so there’s this constant feeling that something is off. That somethings going to go wrong.
Ves causes internal bleeding. His is pretty straightforward, it gets worse if he’s being forcefully removed somehow, and like. Easier to just be a smoky cat than deal with the consequences of possessing someone.
Neil drops body temperature. He’s a lot easier to host than most of his siblings, as long as you’re able to keep warmer, but cold is a lot harsher when you’re not able to warm yourself up.
Myre makes you toasty. She’s not actually harmful to be body roommates with, you just get angry a lil faster and are on the warmer side.
Synaelia hasn’t actually possessed anyone, since she heard about how it goes when Ves does it and would rather not have to worry about messing someone up, but like… her hosts’s blood doesn’t like… coagulate? For better or worse. Also, the host would get itchy easier.
I mentioned Asenith/Nightmare in the tags of the post I made last night, and she’s a lot to host. I haven’t entirely figured out what her goop is yet, but it burns people and over a long enough period of time the blood starts to turn to it. Bad to touch, both for the feel and also for the ouch your hands. She’s not a stranger to killing hosts.
Not many of the gods possess people, since a lot of them have their own bodies to chill in, but Life has dropped in on occasions. People tend to catch very on fire, in that case, though. So, as cool as the booming voice of one of the entities that created the world is, have a lot of water and a healer on hand if possible.
Those are all the ones I’ve figured out so far! How much something affects someone varies from host to host, so some people are able to get away with being possessed (actively or passively) for months at a time before they need rest. Others, of course, have learned otherwise. There are precautions folks can take, although they’re not super common, and making yourself harder to possess altogether is a long and painful process, even if it is worth it in some cases.
Because of how easy it would be to seriously mess someone up, and how one doesn’t know their effects until they possess someone, most entities that can, just don’t, if they can avoid it. And, more often than not, that’s not too much of an issue.

[It’s still dark out when Syn wakes up, and the first thing she does is reach for her glass of water, as if that will fix the scratchy feeling in her throat when she breathes.
She doesn’t know why she still bothers sleeping- she doesn’t have to. She’s dead. And she’s been having nightmares more often than not, anyway.
As her eyes adjust, she catches sight of a certain stone sword propped up against the wall by her closet door. It probably got lonely or something.
“...Do you ever have dreams?”
It doesn’t respond for a while, and at first she thinks it might be asleep or ignoring her, but it appears on the wall closest to her and pipes up.
“I don’t exactly sleep... why?”
She sighs and drops her cup back onto the nightstand, shrugging.
“I don’t know... if a dead person can sleep and dream, why can’t a talking sword? You seem like the sort that would do it just for the hell of it sometimes.”]

[Syn is sat at her kitchen counter, a mug in her hands and a pit in her stomach and a foul taste in the back of her mouth that makes her whole head hurt. Her coffee’s long since gone cold by now, but if she abandons it, she’s going to have to make herself eat something, and the thought makes her stomach turn.
Rei is still on the couch, uncomfortably quiet after the past week. Aelia said she was going to be fine, but... Synaelia doesn’t like not being able to hear her breathe.
“Stop it.”
She doesn’t have to turn around to know that Ves is giving her a look... she can feel it just fine with him behind her back.
“Stop what?”
“That thing you do. Get out of my head.”
She takes a sip of her coffee, and the cat appears on the stool beside her. As he does.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He probably doesn’t... Sean does the same thing, sometimes, and he never seemed to realize it either. Maybe Jams was right and she just thinks too loud. But it would be nice if people stopped knowing things before they should, every once in a while.
She sighs.]

idk who ur ocs are but do u wanna talk abt them
Of course! I’m gonna be a little light on details and talk about a lot of them, so buckle up!
SO! To start, there’s Erellise Feros, who could essentially run the city if she wanted to, but over the years, she’s pulled back from things, so she can call in favors almost anywhere, but doesn’t have to deal with individual things. She wants the power, not the responsibility. She’s got the title of Judge (which is a whole talk of its own- essentially came from titans and has been passed on over the centuries, gaining more power (both social and magical) with each new Judge) and coming to her for help is a sort of deal with the devil. Her family has a hereditary magic that basically gives them a random ability that they’re good at right off the bat, and can only get better at... hers is growing roses, but there’s rumors that she has a second, and that it might be tied into how she seems to know everyone’s secrets, but nobody knows for certain, and if you ask the rest of the family (who disowned her long before she took her title), it would be impossible.
Her wife is Karen Feros-Phelleure, who is... immortal and sad, to put it simply. She was there when and where reality broke, and oops, she’s not able to die now, and any wounds that happen just sort of... undo themselves over time. It’s kind of really morbid sometimes and Karen went ‘fuck it, unethical medicine time’ and became a doctor. She’s not legally recognized, but... if you’re willing to possibly be an experiment and have the connections, she’s the best healer you could find.
Ilkinz Seraq is Erellise’s best friend, and was sort of her mentor in villain-hood and power, and he’s effectively a people-shapeshifter. Think mystique, but they look human all the time, and to my knowledge, more complicated bc i thought it’d be cool. In their own face, they wear a mask (masquerade style, not covid style, 90% of the time, since the enchantment needs a sturdy object to grab ahold of) that’s been enchanted to keep other facechangers from taking their appearance, and jostling said masks is a good way to prove that they are who they say they are. The Seraq family has made a business selling their abilities, and they run the city the family lives in. Ilkinz left his family when he was young (relative to his age now... he’s a while over a hundred, and has cheated around aging by just staying in the appearance of others, so those appearances will age instead of his own. This has had a couple of complications, but he doesn’t mind) and ended up tangled up in a series of things that led to he and Erellise meeting and becoming partners in crime. He’s happy to let her have the spotlight- he’s gained a wide array of contacts and people under his hire over the years so he can work from the wings.
Melanie (...) Phelleure is Karen’s sister, and technically they’re twins, but through some weird time magic, they ended up being born a day apart, fun fact. Melanie is able to turn things to gold, temporarily, and she has a habit of making friends and picking fights, and Karen started spending more time (you know... years, decades, etc) away from her to avoid having to watch her grieve. They always meet up again, sooner or later, because they’ve been each other’s constant for most of their very long lives. Melanie had intended to destroy the Judge title entirely, back when she and Erellise were still new friends, but through a series of events, the title got passed on twice in a couple of days, and time in the space of about a block just got... paused, essentially, for about a century. She’s still catching up.
Anna Syrene was the one that stopped time there for a century. The Syrene family can choose to flex their magic muscles in controlling time, to a small degree, or turning into very large cats. Anna had been working a little in both, and wasn’t very good in either, but when her sister fell incredibly ill, she panicked, and... nobody really knows how she pulled it off. She can’t tamper with time without hurting herself, now, though, so she just sticks with turning into a cat much larger than she is. She ended up getting married to Jackson Feros and having a kid, but Jack died due to complications with a deal with Erellise that she refuses to talk about. Since, she’s kept a place going where anyone can stay for any amount of time, but most people use it as a stop when travelling, or to get their bearings when it feels like everything’s fallen apart. She’s been a home for several of my ex-vent-characters.
Lawrence and Geryon started on Earth, not Elysur, and their arrival was an accident. They wound up dating since, and Lawrence ended up bound to an artifact of legend (PB) and Erellise got him caught up in functionally signing his life away. He’s since been brought back (undead, which... loophole in the deal, and all of it was an accident lol) and became an unintentional dad (and then had a crisis after killing geryon- payback’s a bitch). G has been selling portions of his soul, over the years, and he’s the one that killed Lawrence for good. They had been dancing with swords for years (Erellise told Larry to kill G, and they all knew that wasn’t going to happen but he had to pretend for the sake of the dance, and G would bite back. G knew how it was going to end long before he put a knife in Lawrence’s back) and he ended up becoming a significant figure in the black market, and has done a lot of fucked up shit. He ended up making a person (and refuses to let anyone call him a dad- Syl has several issues because he’s just as bad of a parent as he says he would be.) and making a lot of enemies, and when Lawrence got him to stay down for a while, he had a deal with someone else to bring him back. He’s currently undead, but like... i like having him around. He’s pretty, he’s charismatic, he’s a villain, and he’s got angst. What’s not to love? Aside from, you know, all of him lol
PB is one of the few remnants of the Lyrime. It was one of the titans, although very few people have ever known of this, and most of those people have been dead for a very, very long time. It was cursed to be a tool, and it can change form at the will of those linked to it, and through a loophole (it basically checked of itself as a user) it can choose its form, so most people know of it as a sword. A sword that can call upon storms, or summon a spectral army, or conjure items from seemingly nothing, and it leaves behind a mark that one can call it with? A sword that helped fell cities of titans (even if they’ve been forgotten)? It seems to have a different set of abilities with everybody, and most of its weilders don’t realize what they had until it’s gone or they are, so it tends to go missing for long periods of time. But, to summarize it in two words... asshole sword <3. It’s a little shit. Less genuinely bad than Geryon, but... very rude.
Hopping back a little, Sean Runn is one of the folks Lawrence became an accidental dad to, and he’s the one that accidentally raised him. oops, sick kid with death powers and a corpse that had been brought back to life several times already. He had already been adopted by Ves (in short: demon cat who won’t admit he’s a dad. 2/10, very rude, but does help people sometimes), and talked Ves into taking care of Synaelia as well. When Lawrence showed up, he didn’t remember much of everything, but he knew that Ves would need help. So skeleton dad happened. Sean has spent the past several years learning to twist his magic out of shape so it will do what he’d rather it do (probably not very good for him, but he doesn’t really care that much). He’s a little bit of a magic nerd, and has stumbled across a few things that have been lost since the Lyrime fell, but nobody really knows that but PB who hates it because he twists that out of shape as well. PB, after unbinding from Larry, wound up with Synaelia, and they’ve become friends, despite what either of them expected. Syn was threatened by Geryon, which is what sparked Larry to kill him (don’t fuck with the ex-assassin skeleton’s kids lol), and she ended up being killed by some of his business partners, so now she’s a demon. With a healthy side of ‘my dad was an angel so now i’m stronger and also have wings’. She’s currently starting on a revenge roadtrip with PB, which is slow-going, since she doesn’t want to be too obvious about it, and the people she’s trying to find are pretty good at hiding. It’s a project.
I don’t have a good transition for this one, but... Derrek Velhues. First off, boyo knows he’s fictional and sometimes experiences things that happen to like... alternate universe versions of him. He used to be human, but he wound up being pulled out of his body and into a prison stone (lyrime magic, they could get a post of their own with how i wanna ramble about them), and when he was pulled back out, he was put into the body he’s in now. Significantly taller, and like... i made a fantacy race and called em Whelm. Grey skin, and their blood glows different colors depending on what they’re feeling (and those colors tend to mix because... people are complicated and so are emotions). Their eyes take on the primary color of their blood at any given moment, and their hair takes on the color they feel the most often, and it does shadows backwards. The brighter it is around them, the darker their hair gets. The darker it is, the more their hair glows. Derrek can also see magic and people’s essence but not physical objects (although he can see his own magic reflect off of things close to him). Boyo’s got a *lot* of angst and probably needs therapy, but like... he’s not going to do that. He’s stubborn and also would have to bring up the thing of how he’s fictional and also would have to actually talk about his problems which... he’s just not gonna do that.
Speaking of pretty men who don’t know what they’re doing with their lives, Feryn Rumer has horns and doesn’t wear shirts. Boyo’s mom kind of draws a good amount of power from a Lyrime god trapped at the edge of reality and she’s also kind of shitty and so he probably has a few issues that he hasn’t found yet? He doesn’t know what to do with his life now that he’s not just doing errands of various levels of danger for his mother all the time, but he does like using his middle name as his last name instead of using hers. It’s sort of freeing.
His best friends growing up were Aster Danica and Corvina Silva, and all three of them have horns. They’re all Faun of the Phalgon Woods, which has a whole lore of its own, but in short? They’re just people with horns, and sometimes Corvina’s voice gets magical and makes people do what she says, although she doesn’t know about that and just assumes it’s her own charisma and/or because she’s pretty. Corvina’s got antlers and is dating Rij Seraq, which... I’d really prefer to talk about the two of them in their own post. They just deserve their own thing lol. Aster has 6 or 8 horns (i don’t remember for certain) and the main pair are ram horns (with the others following the shape, although one pair is very short and the second longest aren’t very big. if they have 8, the last pair is in the front, just little nubs thus far- all their horns sit in a row. They’ve got grey hair and were the first to leave the forest town they lived in, followed eventually by Feryn and shortly after by Corvina. They’ve fallen entirely out of touch with Feryn, and only continue to be friends with Corv because like... she claimed them. They’re her friend and they’re stuck with her now lol. Also because she is really hesitant to trust anybody and they are someone she knows she *can* trust, and they’ve gotten closer since she’s  been more sincere with them. All three of them have made money selling their blood to hemovores of various sorts (vampires, other Faun, whoever else might want to dig in), although Corvina has been the most successful in that, even if (or maybe partly because) she’s got to drink blood as well now or she’ll get ill.
I want to talk about all of them so much more but it’s getting chilly here (my folks like it colder than i do at night and also we’ve got blankets to bundle under, i just can’t type as fast with a blanket on my lap), so please, send asks or a message if you wanna hear more, whether its about any of these characters or anyone else! I always adore talking about my ocs (evidently lol)
Also! Thank you for this ask! I’m pretty sure i’ve said it tonight already but i always adore getting to talk about my ocs and settings, whether its something new or just going over the lore again or more in depth or whatever!

Syn sees that it’s snowing and she goes outside and falls facedown into the snow and just stays there for like an hour before she gets around to actually making a snow angel. 10/10, very big wings due to having literal wings, and she worried one of her neighbors who didn’t realize she’s already dead. Pb also makes a snow angel. It asks her to throw it in the snow and it just sits there before going back to the porch. 1/10, does it count as a snow angel if you’re a sword that leaves a sword shaped imprint

So I just remembered that Rei exists and where she was left off in her journey and like. Her having a bit of a Moment at Syn’s place, and like... a lot of things might happen. Pb would 100% try to start smth (and then get kicked out by Syn. And then tossed out the window a couple of times when it didn’t want to go.), Rei would be given a mug of coffee and then need a replacement (or four) because she’s Distressed and mugs are very fragile and things tend to fall apart when she gets distressed because she’s still figuring the whole thing out, and Syn would probably steal some of her power for a little while, to help out for a little bit. And then she’d spend the rest of the evening pacing the longest stretch of her apartment because she’s gotta get that energy out somehow and she’s not just gonna leave

Sometimes I forget for extended periods of time that Synaelia needs glasses and just refuses to wear them because fuck that. She also refuses to wear contacts because yikes. So the question is: is her vision still blurry as hell as a spicy ghost, or did she become a ghost and go ‘oh fuck I can see things from a distance’

It’s been a while since Synaelia actually took someone’s magic. She forgot how it leaves a bit of a taste on the roof of her mouth and everything smells like sour candy for a little bit after. She forgot how it makes her feel like she’s eaten too much and is going to be a little sick... and she forgot how energizing it is. Fuck coffee, the new wake-up call is just fucking... leeching on someone’s power.
