this is the most... genuinely happy jinshi has looked since the start of the show. he's openly enjoying himself, taking in his surroundings, and good-naturedly teasing maomao over her unusual behavior as the daughter of a well-off family (just as maomao keeps reminding him to act like a commoner instead of a high ranking official). it's pretty sweet (but also a bit heartbreaking when you realize that means he must bury all of his personality/true interests back in the court...)

Something I love about Frieren's approach to human vs human battles is that unlike other shows where the outcome is determined by a 'power level hierarchy' (aka if character A is stronger than character B who is stronger than character C, then by that logic A should win against C), the winner instead depends on the match up of each character's strengths and weaknesses.

To give a clear example taken straight from episode 26: out of all the test takers, Frieren and Sense are arguably the two strongest. If we follow the logic I laid out above (if A > B > C, then A > C), then when Übel decides to face Sense, we expect her to lose. After all, there's no way she's stronger than Sense, right?

However, it just happens that Übel is one of the only person capable of defeating Sense. Her conviction that she can cut through Sense's hair and body is her strength and it is exactly what's needed in this situation since Sense internally conceded to herself she lost to Übel two years back, making her replica weak to Übel. In other words, Übel was the worst match up for Sense and it is the reason her replica lost.

This is something that has also been shown throughout the tournament arc: Fern wins against Ehre thanks to her being capable of hiding her mana to almost perfection + her quick and strong offensive magic taking Ehre by surprise; Wirbel/Ehre/Scharf manage to defeat the Scharf/Wirbel/Ehre replica respectively; Wirbel takes Übel by surprise with sorganeil and would have won if this were a 1 vs 1, etc.

It's a really refreshing approach to human fights!

The sympathy Himmel must feel for Voll (having lost and forgotten his wife due to the passage of time); the dread/sadness knowing that Frieren will probably experience the same once he and the others pass away; him being the best placed to know the deceased would be happy to be kept in their loved one's heart and thoughts, to know their existence marked and shaped Voll/Frieren even beyond death.

And he doesn't hesitate to share that with Voll, if only to lighten his grief a little.

god i know. their every fluffy moment is soooo bittersweet because it can only pay off in the present time (when Himmel is already long gone). frimmel is the kind of slowburn that only hits after DECADES, when one half of the ship is dead and the other finally realizes how much they were (and still are) loved and cherished

Himmel is honestly a king for putting all the work ahead of time without ever being pushy or judgemental with Frieren. he knows his efforts will probably only bear fruit long after he's dead. everything he says or does (the proposal, telling Frieren about his hometown's flowers, praising her spells, giving her important lessons about the worth of helping people or doing thing with your friends even if it's a pain, commissioning statues of their person, etc.) has one purpose: to comfort and cheer up the elf he loves when he's no longer around to do so

and I love how Frieren's realizations at the depths of Himmel's feelings are sad at first (especially after his death, when she comments how she took their time together for granted and didn't get to know him better), yet grow lighter over the show. now every reminder of Himmel brings a smile to Frieren's face as she reminisces on the good times with him <3
