Museu do Arroz ‘Museu do Arroz’ restaurant is located in ‘Herdade da Comporta’ in a building that has once served as a rice mill factory. The building was restored in 2006 to be used as a tourist attraction. The restaurant is also known as ‘Isabelinha’s’ referring to the owner, Isabel Carvalho. Because it combines good food with a relaxed atmosphere it became one of the trendiest places in the region. The restaurant was born after the idea of transforming the old factory into a museum dedicated to the office of processing rice was abandoned. It started as a “petiscos” (Portuguese finger food) house but it was rapidly converted into a restaurant. After the 2006 restoration, the old terrace and the overall rustic look gave way to a modern space, with a mezzanine at the back where the ‘Sushi Lounge’ is located. Just as the name suggests the ‘Museu do Arroz’ specialty is indeed rice, served malandrinho and out-of-the-stove-hot in a clay pot. Rice is everywhere on the menu, and the starters list is no exception where the soy sauce rice cakes are pride of place. Museu do Arroz The ‘Rice Museum’ is located at the entrance to the village of Comporta in Portugal. The museum is located in the old rice husking factory dating back to 1952. It is devoted to local rice growing and related traditions. In this cultural space one goes back in time to better understand the impact of this atypical culture in the history and development of “Herdade da Comporta”. In addition to this factory, there are several workshops, with a collection of tools for locksmithing, carpentry and forging. These workshops were intended for the maintenance of the factory, the housing of the workers, the office, the canteen, the butcher shop, the bakery, the church and contributed to the production of instruments and vehicles for the agricultural activities. Thus the domain could be autonomous until the end of the 1960s. These days there is a restaurant located next to the museum, known by the same name. 'Museu do Arroz’ is a chic and sophisticated restaurant for regional cuisine in Comporta. Sit in the eclectically-designed, renovated rice warehouse or out on the terrace overlooking the rice fields. ’Museu do Arroz’ means “Rice Museum” in English. No doubt, the specialties of this establishment lean toward rich and flavourful rice and seafood dishes.
